Okay so it is 1:20am and I should be going to bed but instead I’m gonna contribute to the endless conversation about how fucking fantastic the representation in hades is

Like as a queer person of colour I just get this massive wave of joy when I see my favourite characters look like me. Like I often forget how underrepresented people like me are in the media until I actually see it and it changes me fundamentally lol

Orpheus and eurydice have afros LIKE ME! Athena, ares, zeus and patroclus are black LIKE ME! Dusa is asexual and trans LIKE ME! Chaos is nonbinary LIKE ME! There’s also east/south asian representation via hermes and dionysus. And it’s all portrayed so casually, it’s not there to tick off a diversity box. Supergiant actually put thought and care into these designs and stories and that’s just so amazing to see especially within the gaming industry

To quote the creative director of supergiant from this article (which you should DEFINITELY check out)

Not only is it great to see sexuality represented but it’s represented well. Like everyone just knows zag is bi, there’s no coming out story and there’s no threat of discrimination. It’s just like yeah this is zagreus he likes men and women and pissing off his dad. When zag asks dusa about her body and she declines to talk about it he apologizes saying that he didn’t know any better. Everything is treated with so much respect it’s just so great

Again, my heart feels so full when I see portrayals like this. I looked in the mirror the other day and made a joke about how my hair looked like orpheus’ and that honestly made me so happy and giddy it was a little embarrassing lol

Anyways, I think I had more to say but I’m tired and my brain is foggy but I needed to rant about this because otherwise I might’ve exploded lmao

Random Hades Game Headcanons

Zagreus gives the best hugs. He's tall, naturally really warm, and the right amount of muscle where he's soft but also strong. Plus he's just so comforting to be around <3

Cerberus has a little black spot on his tummy (i say little it's about the size of a hand print) and that's how he got his name (which means spotted)

Thanatos is trans and has top surgery scars under his cloak

Persephone actually used to party with Dionysus when she was younger and lived on Olympus (partially to numb the pain and to rebel against her mother)

Demeter (when she finds out about Zagreus being her Grandson and later Melinoe) spoils them rotten. Pinching cheeks and giving cash and cookies. The embodiment of a shitty mother but an awesome grandmother

Hypnos is actually really close with his sister Nemesis, she affectionately gives him noogies when nobody is looking (has to keep up her badass image)

Zagreus is a lightweight and can barely handle a glass or two of nectar and you'll typically get either that you'll get Flirty/Party animal Zag or Completely zoned out and rambling incoherently Zag. On rare days tho you get Traumadumping and Sobbing Zag.

Hermes has betting polls running at Olympian parties Zag will be at to see which one until Thanatos catches on and glares at Hermes to stop while he carries his boyfriend home

Every time he sees Zagreus and Persephone (and later on Melinoe) happy together, Hades can't help but feel guilty about how terribly he treated (and fucked up) his only son (as he should)

Odysseus gave up Elysium to stay with Penelope in Asphodel

All the rest of these are about the Red Shade who cheers on Zagreus in Elysium (i love them so much)

The "Supportive Shade" (as the wiki called them) is Iphigenia (the girl who was sacrificed to start the Trojan War) and she's just a bisexual teenage girl with issues who loves gladiatorial warfare (totally not because it's a healthy way to let out her issues).

She also comes down to Tartarus once a week to beat the shit outta her father because fuck Agamemnon

She also befriends and starts dating Cassandra bc I said so.

Ends up being adopted by Achilles and Patroclus (which is a little awkward at first since she almost married Achilles) but they bond over their hatred of Agamemnon

He ends up teaching her how to fight and she occasionally tries to spar with Zagreus

Hesitated a lot on posting this one as I felt somewhat scared. Even though I was personally asked to share a piece regarding my experience with being a trans man some weeks ago and I delivered it... I still hesitated on posting it publicly in fear of people questioning "how much of a man" I am because of my own feelings regarding how I identify as and how I present myself publicly.

But hey, I'm allowed to feel proud of my body and my identity and I deserve to feel good about myself

This one is a very personal piece for me, while I was doing it I felt everything from happiness that I was asked for my art, I felt proud of displaying my own body and portraying it as a sacred/celestial thing, as well as showing my relationship with gender and how I also feel guilty of not portraying masculinity more and not making people "less uncomfortable" around me by going on T and getting top/bottom surgery when I personally do not need them.

"It would be easy, tho... Maybe I just need to commit more into looking masculine and passing as a cis dude... Am I just faking it?" Those are some of the thoughts I usually have when telling someone my pronouns and why I want them to call me Zag. Thats why the pink rope holding me to the moon gets thiner. "It would be so easy to just let myself go"

If you're someone who knows me, you know how much I love moon imagery and how it has always been an important symbol for me... but its also a symbol of femenine energy, thats why it is holding me tight.

The obsidian mirror on top is a reference to the deity Tezcatlipoca, and how his obsidian mirror is often a symbolism for reflecting oneself, so its fair that it sits on top showing what I feel about myself and the fear/joy I have.

I dont doubt I feel so much better when people call me a he, I rejoice when my friends introduce me as "Zag" and call me a dude, I hate being called a woman and I hate so much being percieved as one... which is "ironic" as how much I love to wear makeup and look femenine. I'm just a femenine man.

Have you done the Azumarill line yet? I searched in the tags and couldn’t find it, but it IS tumblr

Before we start, I need to mention that the naming of this line drives me nuts and I always get Azurill's name mixed up with Marill's. That has nothing to do with anything, I just wanted to mention it.

Anyway, Azurill is a good example of how to add a pre-evo to a line later on. A lot pre-evos added later on end up feeling unnecessary because they don't add anything to the line. In Azurill's case however, the white markings on the cheeks and the waterdrop-shaped body are unique to it.

Much more importantly, taking the line's signature floatation tails and making the body small enough to bounce on it is fun, cute, and a fun twist on the rest of the line's designs. That alone justifies its existence and makes it plenty memorable, unlike some other similar pre-evos I could mention (not naming names) (Pichu).

While Pikablu Marill does what it needs to, I do think it's the blandest of the line. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, but Azurill bounces on its tail and Azumarill has unique markings, while Marill is fairly standard by comparison. Still, it works as an in-between and doesn't look overly similar to either of its evos, which is all that really matters.

Visually, the main draw of this line is obviously the tails, as mentioned above. I really like the biology included in the 'dex about them; Azurill's tail contains nutrients to help it grow, while Marill's tail has oil in it that helps it float on water, allowing it to deep-dive despite not being able to breathe underwater. It's always nice when a design has actual thought put into how it works and why.

Aside from that, the blue color is pleasant and reflects its water-typing, while the underbelly helps break apart the body a bit. Nothing stand-out, but a good basis for the rest of the line.

It also has this beta sprite. Nothing much to note other than the blue makes more sense than pink giving the typing and the zig-zag tail gets the fact that it can stretch across more clearly than the straight tail here. Something about the expression and ears were cuter in this beta, but everything else has been an improvement.

Azumarill is a pretty straightforward evo for Marill, following the Jigglypuff line's tactic of taking a round Pokemon and having it elongate and gain some vaguely rabbit-ish features when it evolves. I do, however, think it stands out a bit more than Marill. This is mostly due the water-y, bubble-like markings, which also serve as a form of countershading according to the 'dex:

Aside from the markings, the egg-shaped body and long ears help it to feel stronger than Marill while still making sense progression-wise. I do find myself wishing something more interesting had been done with the tail, seeing as it's the most distinct element here and nothing about it really changes; I could easily see it becoming white to match its new markings, becoming more oval-like in shape to match the body, etc. Still, the design works fine as-is.

Overall, this line is pretty simple, but solid. The biology behind the stages is well thought out, each stage is distinct, and the designs are straightforward.

Also, Marill can be trans, so that's great.

This one I would probably consider to be another Closest To My Heart redux, because I have one (1) idea I’m fixated on and it’s DISGUSTING 😂 This WIP has the honor of being THE thing I was doing the moment Hades 2 Early Access dropped and it’s actually fairly far along so I could probably bang it out pretty quick and get it done the next time I’m in-between projects 👀‼️

Basically the idea is, what if Patrochilles have this sort of good cop/bad cop ritual with Zag where Achilles “punishes” Zag for lusting after Pat (this whole thing was initially inspired by watching a friend drawing a picture of Achilles with Zag over his lap and spanking him lol) and it’s very degradation kink… And then Zag goes to Elysium and Pat takes care of him and it’s very praise kink (playing up whole idea of callous, arrogant Achilles vs gentle, kind Patroclus) BUT ALSO Pat purposely does stuff to Zag to rile up Achilles, and Zag also comes home all full of himself like “that sure is a top shelf man you’ve got there, I’m still sore even after taking a rejuvenation trip down the Styx!” so it’s wash, rinse, repeat since Zag is just a huge perv who gets off on all of it :3 And I guess it culminates in him encountering them both in Elysium and they get to have him together

Also I made zag explicitly trans for this one… so I thought of like, Achilles filling up his pussy as a treat for Pat and Pat like “for me? <3” and eating him out

I also wanted Zag over Achilles’ lap and Achilles fingering to make him squirt and then scolding him harshly when he gets his robes all wet

And then Pat gently kisses all the marks Achilles makes on zag’s skin :’)

Oh and hey, here’s a snippet of prose, even!

He is a toy, a bone that two dogs fight over; he experiences the thrilling rush as they manhandle him roughly. He is not afraid, not even if they were to mishandle him to death. For Zagreus, the sort of god that he is, it is the ultimate expression of worship.

also an important note for writing image descriptions: Do not assume the audience knows what things look like.

If there's a Pokemon, for example, don't just say the name of the Pokemon and assume that's enough information. Give a short description!

Same with pride flags -- you might be intimately familiar with the xenogender flag -- but for all you know, the next person to read your image description has never even heard the term before now, let alone knowing what the flag looks like!

Even for "obvious" things you think everyone recognizes, like Pikachu or the trans flag! Always say the name, and then give a short description. "The trans pride flag, with stripes of blue, pink, white, pink, and blue.". "Pikachu, a Pokemon with yellow fur, four small paws, long pointed ears, a zig-zag tail, and red cheeks.".

Persephone is trans, and I won't take criticism about that.

Hades and Nyx never had sex, but Persephone and Nyx did.

Persephone ate the pom on purpose, after Hades' warning that it would bind her to his place.

That Hypnos is absolutely tone deaf is nothing new, but I think he is quite literally almost deaf, and usually just reads lips. Because he is pretty good at that, almost nobody notices.

Cerberus is coded just like King Ghidorah is. Ichi, Ni and San. The middle head is most aggressive and smart, the (from his pov) right one the most obedient and the left one all cuddly and dorky.

Thanatos loves Zag's rugs and carpets. Zagreus can barely feel them, but Thanatos can, when his feet touch the ground.

Zagreus dashed in not only on Euredicy and Orpheus at more than one occasion but also on Achilles and Patroclus.

Zag can sense some royalty in people not due to his own heritage but his bond to blood.

Nyx, Achilles and Persephone are the ultimate "go ask you mom"

Zeus tried to make a "yo momma" joke a couple of times but Zagreus just looks absolutely murderous at him through the message when he does.

Patroclus met Hector in Elysium once, and Hector seemed afraid to even speak with him, which confused Pat a lot

Patroclus could eat in Elysium but he doesn't, because he hopes the feeling of starving would make him feel something. It doesn't. He just grew more melancholic

Zagreus can only escape the underworld because the Fates were having a headache over all this family drama and wanted a period of peace among the gods to catch some breath

Hades is not scary because he is not afraid of death. He is scary because he is not afraid of his sisters.
