Do you mind sharing any advice you might have for someone that wants to write smut with a trans girl in it? I like yours a lot but I don't want other people to think mine is gross or weird. Thank you for everything you do!

Thank you for the very lovely comment about my fics, that's super kind of you to share with me. I'd be happy to help even if you weren't so sweet :)

I swear I've answered an ask like this before, but I can't find it thanks to tumblr's incredible search features. So, here we go.

First of all, I'm not an authority on this subject. I'm one (1) lady that likes to write and happens to write a fair bit. Take what I say as nothing more than a suggestion and compare it to what other trans women who read/write erotica think on the subject; compare it to your own opinions. Collate that data and toss out all the shit you find unhelpful or useless. Find where your personal boundaries and interests sit in the cross-section of it all.

TL;DR? Write what you'd like to read. Be aware of the tags and descriptions you use. It's a hobby, so have fun.

Let's get the big one out of the way: never be afraid to write what you think is enjoyable to read and/or what you think is hot. Really, it's that simple. If you are nervous or anxious, I understand. It's hard to put yourself out there, but there is no way to ensure that you'll write something that everyone likes. There's really no reason to worry about those that won't like what you write, so why bother?

Your favorite writers might have readers that find their works "gross or weird," as you put it. Those people will always exist as long as you publish words for others to read. That's the nature of the beast. You should consider the reasonable opinions you hear, but like any other type of editorial advice, you don't have to agree with it — some people want to eat a peach pie when you want to make tacos.

You should also learn to differentiate a reasonable opinion from an unreasonable, unhelpful, or straight-up harmful one. For a blatant example of a harmful and unreasonable criticism, anyone that calls femslash with a trans woman an "excuse to write het sex" is directly calling your character(s)/you a man regardless of intent.

That being said, in my experience the overwhelming majority of readers are reasonable people with specific tastes that they're entitled to have. But we can't write with the goal of pleasing all of them. Writing like that results in nobody's happiness.

Anyways, here's some other suggestions that came to mind.

If you yourself are trans, then don't force yourself to write something that you know will trigger any dysphoria that you might suffer. I don't care if it's popular for X character to be written as trans in a specific way - don't do it in the way that you know will hurt you. "Oh, everyone writes them this way" is a terrible beginning to your writing journey, and it extends in smutty directions even more so, especially if it's going to actively harm your mental state.

Do write whatever niche that gets your writing brain going wild. That's the fannish spirit you want to really grab hold of! Write something kinky or something vanilla or something chaste or something raunchy. Write chaste D/s that's focused on domesticity or non-sexual kinks; write raunchy vanilla smut that's all about graphic descriptions, dirty talk, and ramped-up emotions. Or write hyper-explicit kink and chaste vanilla smut. It's all valid.

Focus very sparingly on genitals. Focus on the character first. Feelings, motivations, interiority. These have to exist, even in PWP at some level. Sure, describing whatever they've got in salacious detail is expected and desired by readers when another character is, like, literally about to give oral and can barely contain themselves with desire for the person, but it's a fine line to walk.

Trans women have junk of all kinds. Don't be afraid to write people with whatever you want. Write girls who happen to have dicks and girls who happen to have pussies. You don't have to strive for the mythological ideal where you have an equal measure of both either.

Very personal advice, but please don't use the "fut*nari" tag or its related tags for trans women in fics. Use the "Trans Female Character" and/or "Trans [Character Name]" tags instead. Some trans women are fine with the f-tag or ambivalent to it, but it's a massive red flag for me. It's a dehumanizing word for me, so I avoid anything with that tag.

Give some kind of heads-up as to what terminology you're going to use. This can be in the tags or an author's note (I prefer the note though I don't think either is right/wrong) but I think it's important, specifically for this type of smut, that the reader knows what they're going to read w/r/t how you describe a character's body. Some people really don't like the word "cock" for what a trans woman might have, but others don't like calling it anything else. I use a variety of terms in my fics based on the character and how I interpret the ways in which they would describe their bodies. This doesn't have to be universal, either. Don't follow what one person does just because they do it. Think about how the character might internalize their body and go from there. It's fine to end up with the same words, but do it because you believe in it.

Lastly, and by far most importantly, have fun. If you're stressed out, bored, or having mental crises over fanfiction, then you need to stop. It's a hobby—a fun one tbh—and your suffering is not worth it.

I feel like there are some really fun/hot/cute things you can go with pregnant trans women and while this is far from an exhaustive list, I'm always campaigning for more tfpreg so allow me to share some ideas.

Trans lady who hasn't seen her friends in a while... like the better part of a year, finally getting the reunite with them after some effective rounds of HRT. Everyone's excited to see her after some time transitioning... but they didn't anticipate her waddling in with a full term belly. Her confidence has grown as much as her tummy, and the previously very reserved egg they knew has turned into a beautiful, proud trans woman who isn't afraid to turn heads or take up some space... and with such an impressive belly, she does both quite well. She revels in having her tummy rubbed by her friends, and is very open to answering questions about her pregnancy. Turns out she's not full term, just 7 months with twins.

Trans lady whos still working out the whole "dressing nicely in femme clothes" thing... it doesn't come naturally to everyone, and she's still figuring out her look. Getting pregnant only applied more pressure. Her anime graphic tees now don't even reach her navel. The jeans that she's had for YEARS now don't even pull up past her baby-weight-expanded butt, let alone button. She keeps underestimating the size of her belly, so the maternity shirts she brings home to try to remedy the issue are still too tight to really fit. Perhaps both most excitingly and jarringly, her breasts have expanded enough between the HRT and pregnancy that she went from being fairly flat chested to having a capital R Rack. Thankfully, she has a good support network who are going to intervene to fix her wardrobe. Just in time for the third trimester.

Trans lady who is full term and struggling with her size. She's not one of the stereotypical lanky, tall trans girls who can leverage some extra height to keep the belly from getting too in the way. She's 5'4", 41 weeks with a 10 pound baby, and she's had enough. She loves painting her nails but bending over to do her toes is basically impossible, and while she tries to keep her legs shaved, the third trimester has been rough. Thankfully, she has a very supportive partner who goes the extra mile to help her feel comfortable and pretty while she's carrying their kid. Boxes of chocolates, pedicures, gentile help applying lotion to her body... she's pampered and feminine, as she should be.

I hate it when I headcanon a character who’s canonically a girl as a trans man and make ships of him and a character who’s canonically a guy and I refer to it as a gay/mlm/guyxguy/whatever ship and someone gets mad. Like omg let trans people have FUNNNNN. Why are queer headcanons and genderbends cool until they’re saying that the character is trans???

and like half of the characters in the franchise are women, and a total of… NONE of the characters are trans men. Also, my headcanon doesn’t change the source material. If my stuff upsets you, you can block me and go engage with the source or maybe every single other fanwork, since mine is the only trans man hc for this character that I’ve ever seen.

or when people are like “WTF??? this is so transphobic!!! how dare you imply that a character who looks like that could be a trans man?!?! do you think that trans men are women or something??? she uses she/her, and you’re misgendering her!”

No, I don’t think that being a trans man makes you a woman or vice versa. That’s why it’s a headcanon, and the headcanon is that this character is actually a trans man and not a woman at all! You’ll never guess what pronouns most trans men had to use at some point in their lives, and you really won’t like it when you find out about pre-(or no-)transition trans men… or trans men who are in the closet… or trans men who don’t know that they’re trans yet.

“But the character is a kid!!! Saying they’re trans is sexualizing them.”

I’ve seen this one from other queer people. Like did you miss when all of the homophobes said this about your identity, or do you think that bigotry is only bad when it’s directed at you?

“Why would you say ‘testosterone could fix her’??? Are you trying to call her a delusional woman?”

Why would your brain even go to that first? This literally has to be a bad faith reading, because there’s no way that someone could see what I said and get this unless they were specifically looking for something to be mad at me for.

(Note for anyone unaware: “Estrogen would’ve fixed him!” was a meme going around at the time I said this. I’m not sure if it’s still super big, but this was a joke to the effect of that.)

I feel like we get so lost in the sauce in fandom and fanfic spaces that we forget trans people exist. And it's kinda concerning. like is it cool and interesting to make a story where someone who physically couldn't get pregnant does? Yeah. But also trans people exist in every shape, form and fashion.

I've also been seeing some interesting takes regarding Mystique technically being Kurt's "father". Like yeah it's implied that she was the sperm donor parent, but it's not outrageous or even inconsistent that she would want to be referred to as his mother. She is (to my limited knowledge) referred to as a woman and uses she/her pronouns, why is it seen as out there to some people that she would refer to herself as his mother?

Now if we wanted to play with Mystiques potential genderfuild-ness then my all means go ahead. I'll eat that shit up. But that not what I'm seeing and it's concerning.

Basically what I'm saying is trans people exist and I'm tired of it being handled weird in my fan spaces.

This is so insidious. "Be aware of your language because you might unknowingly be spreading Evil ideology!!" basically just means "don't talk about this at all because it bothers me". It's so so transparent. If I'm constantly having to be careful about what I say about female characters (regardless of my actual intended meaning) because this Supreme Arbiter of Truth might randomly decide it's Terf Rhetoric Actually how can I ever have any sort of meaningful discussion at all? Notice how it's framed as "unknowingly"– if I have no possible way of knowing HOW I'm using Evil Language, how can I possibly avoid it? By shutting up is the answer.

It's based on NOTHING. It's a strawman. There is not a single Lily fan that thinks that Lily is just a mother and nothing else. Seeing Lily as more than a mother and recognising motherhood is important to her story are not mutually exclusive. Furthermore, in what world is pointing out that women are sidelined in fandom terf rhetoric? This person is just deliberately conflating discussions about misogyny in fandom with hate groups because they know that's an easy way to get people riled. They're pretending the main argument against Lily's exclusion in fandom is about motherhood (it's not) and then doing a further mental backflip to stir up moral outrage about people defending female characters.

Be absolutely clear about this- this person KNOWS, deep down, that there is a reason why they only engage with male characters, and this bothers them. Instead of being honest with themselves about it they are inventing a bullshit faux progressive reason to silence any and all criticism and convince their own conscience that they're in the right.

There are no laws, obviously, saying you can't change lily's story or make her a side character if you want. I myself once made her a side character in a prongsfoot fic. The problem is when this is an overwhelming tendency in fandom, which IS significant and IS, in my opinion at least, worth pointing out. When arguably the most important character in the Marauders Era is routinely sidelined in favour of male characters who are literally irrelevant, that does actually say something about what sorts of characters fandom likes to engage with and why. When she's routinely bashed and hated for not really doing anything wrong while male characters who range from bullies to murderers are excused and idealised, that does say something.

It's never pleasant to have to critically examine your own interactions with fiction and accept that your preferences might be rooted in deeper-held beliefs about the world. But it is important, and one way to do this is to facilitate open conversations between different points of view. One way to NOT do this is claiming that everyone else but you is "accidentally" "unknowingly" using evil language so they might as well shut up about their opinions and about women in general.

Ellie had been your rival for years, yet you've always had a little crush on her. Her looks and her beautiful green eyes. "Dude seriously that's enough."

"So what should I call you?"

"Ellie, and only Ellie, no nicknames."

"No nicknames? Not even El?" You kick your legs against the cupboard and stare at the floor before taking a sip of beer. Ellie's heart flutters at the nickname El. "I guess that's fine, but only that." She says hesitantly after taking a sip.

"Fine, El." Her nickname has a nice ring to it and it rolls off your tongue like condensation dripping off a glass in the mid summer heat. You look up into her green eyes only to realize they are looking back. Staring at face admiring every freckle. Your eyes wander without realizing, drifting down her neck she catches you staring. "Whatcha looking at?"

"Your ugly mug." You say in a blunt yet panicked tone. Ellie rolls her eyes and chugs the rest of her beer. "Yeah right you're just saying that to get a rise out of me." You finish the rest of your beer and smirk. "You know what else rises?" She raises an eyebrow at you and asks "What?" in a not very amused tone.

"My juicy fat cock." She pauses for a second and then laughs. You laugh along with her and blush. You take in her features as she laughs and your thoughts are filled with how gorgeous she is, and sexy. "You're so cheesy!" She says in-between laughs. You give her a toothy grin, "Cheesier than sharp cheddar?" You laugh at your own joke and she laughs with you.

"No! Way worse! Like, Cheesier than nachos." She says with a smile on her face.

"So, you would hate it if I kissed you right now? Is that too cheesy?" She smirks and leans in so close that her breath that smells of beer fans your face. "Yes!" You pause staring into her green eyes. "Well no..."

The second those words slip out of your mouth, she smashes her lips on yours, letting go of your arms and cupping your face as the kiss gets more heated. You're feeling dizzy, and it's getting harder to breathe, so you pull away. Staring at her red face, yours heats up. You press your lips back onto hers and bite her lower lip. She opens her mouth, and her tongue explores yours. Her hands slide down your neck to your chest, then to the hem of your shirt. The tension in the room rises, and it gets hotter.
