Andrea Dworkin was many things, a transphobe was not one of them:
Andrea Dworkin is subject to many myths. She did not *technically* say that all heterosexual sex is rape, she simply framed heterosexual sex as innately rapey and considered rape culture to extend to literally any manifestation of sexual desire. She was not at all transphobic, but her perception and broadening of various concepts paved the groundwork for the people who made feminism an anti-trans hate cult without anything else 'feminine' about it.
This is no more innately predictable than 'dictatorship of the proletariat' and 'the Paris Commune was too cowardly' lead directly to the Great Terror, but it did lay an element of continuity that wasn't even on Dworkin's mind when she wrote her own works. What Dworkin actually intended was to spotlight all the various elements of innate culturally sanctioned violence and just how pervasive it is, in other words *meaning* to frame the concept about rape culture.
That, however, was lost even on those who supported her, let alone the opportunists who took gift-wrapped ideas down much worse paths.

Transmasculinity Throughout Time: Lou Alcott
Tumblr media
Yes, you heard me. There is substantial evidence that the author of Little Women was in fact a transgender man! He actually didn’t go by the name that Little Women was published under, with family and friends he would go by Lou, Louy, or LM. His children called him “papa” and “father” and his father, Bronson Alcott, called him his son. He said in 1882, “I am more than half persuaded that I am a man’s soul, put by some freak of nature into a woman’s body.” As a child, he said in a journal, “I don’t care much for girls things. People think I’m wild and queer.” He would pass as a man at masked parties for fun, and delighted in people’s reactions. For his entire life, he expressed this identification as a man, and the character of Jo in Little Women was in part a self insert character based on this. So why don’t we hear about him as a trans man? Well, it’s just not convenient for most people to believe that a beloved book about girls becoming women was written by a man.

"I Am A Transwoman. I am In The Closet. I Am Not Coming Out." by Jennifer Coates
here is an extremely important article written by a trans woman that touches on why man hating, and assuming certain people to be men affects more than just men. this behavior affects trans women and transfemmes and we need to care about not profiling people who are in our spaces and lives

"No Pride for some of us without liberation for all of us." - Micah Bazant
Tumblr media
EDIT: "Non-judgmental FYI that this quote was actually coined by white trans artist Micah Bazant and is often wrongfully attributed to Marsha P. Johnson! Nothing against the quote or its origins, they just aren't Johnson's words." @faerantstory
"The phrase 'No Pride For Some of Us Without Liberation For All of Us' was originally written by me, but has become globally attributed to Marsha. This attribution has made it much more meaningful and powerful for trans and queer communities, and I am happy for her to receive credit for it. I am unendingly grateful for all Marsha gave us, and for the countless other warriors who sacrificed their lives to create space for trans existence." - Micah Bazant

TRANSGENDER people always existed
Hey gang, who is in Chicago? I will be there last week of September, looking for speaking opportunities. Would love to discuss this—the subject of my upcoming book—especially as it’s an election year. The history of trans people goes as far back as, well, people. And the current attacks on trans people have ugly precedent among fascists and right wingers. I have the receipts, and I’ll be in town anyway for a friend… love to set up a gig (helps defray expense of travel).

butch trans women: a butch voices 2011 panel
…the transcript!
as far as i can tell, the captions on youtube are fairly accurate, but creating a full transcript was still important to me for a few reasons: accessibility, archival, & resources. 1) especially for people who can’t listen to the audio, i think the transcript is a lot easier to read with punctuation, speaker notation, etc. 2) i’m always concerned about the possibility of youtube videos being taken down (by the creator or more likely youtube itself) & text documents are a lot easier than video to share & store, including offline. 3) whenever possible i incorporated updated & archived links of resources mentioned as well as pdf backups.
watch, read, share with your friends, add to your trans microlibrary (@thetransfemininereview), print out & put on your bookshelf, & most importantly remember butch trans women are a vital part of butch/femme history, present, & future❣️

to whoever needs to hear this: transvestite and transsexual are not slurs. "outdated" queer terms are not inherently slurs. these are literally historically the first 2 terms created and used to talk about the trans community, both coined the first doctor to perform successful trans sex reassignment surgeries, who spent the rest of his career pioneering and paving the way for the modern surgeries we perform today. his name was Magnus Hirschfeld, he was a jewish doctor who began a lifetime of fighting for queer rights due to being moved by the struggles his queer patients went through in terms of not being allowed to accept themselves during the Nazi regime at the time. these are perfectly fine terms that have grown to develop their own distinct meanings and communities over time. this man spent his life fighting for trans and jewish rights during Nazi occupation. any queer term can be used as a slur in the wrong hands. thank you
