I Saw the TV Glow is such a uniquely, devastatingly queer story. Two queer kids trapped in suburbia. Both of them sensing something isn’t quite right with their lives. Both of them knowing that wrongness could kill them. One of them getting out, trying on new names, new places, new ways of being. Trying to claw her way to fully understanding herself, trying to grasp the true reality of her existence. Succeeding. Going back to help the other, to try so desperately to rescue an old friend, to show the path forward. Being called crazy. Because, to someone who hasn’t gotten out, even trying seems crazy. Feels crazy. Looks, on the surface, like dying.

And to have that other queer kid be so terrified of the internal revolution that is accepting himself that he inadvertently stays buried. Stays in a situation that will suffocate him. Choke the life out of him. Choke the joy out of him. Have him so terrified of possibly being crazy that he, instead, lives with a repression so extreme, it quite literally is killing him. And still, still, he apologizes for it. Apologizes over and over and over, to people who don’t see him. Who never have. Who never will. Because it’s better than being crazy. Because it’s safer than digging his way out. Killing the image everyone sees to rise again as something free and true and authentic. My god. My god, this movie. It shattered me.

Finally got around to watching I saw the tv glow and I’ve had an incomprehensible sense of dread ever since 🙂‍↕️

the public reaction to i saw the tv glow is like a perfect case study into how cis people take up queer spaces and unknowingly mock and enjoy trans suffering. sitting in the theater, i had a pit in my stomach the entire time. so many times, i would tear up and then someone else in the theater would laugh. and i wouldn’t cry because how would they look at me when the lights came back on? because they don’t see it. they don’t see the pain. they think it’s funny. i left the theater completely silent, not saying a word to my boyfriend and he didn’t say a word to me until partway into the drive home. the people around us immediately got to picking it apart, explaining what it all meant to each other, dumbing it down, making theories. cis people see the the movie, just like transness, as something to debate. a conversation. something to dissect because it makes them uncomfortable if they don’t understand it in their easily digestible way.

Seolah ingin membantah kabar tersebut, Depe sapaan akrabnya pamer video call bareng Rully. Dewi Perssik juga membeberkan fakta hubungan asmaranya dengan sang pacar. Ia mengaku seringkali memutuskan Rully tetapi selalu ditolak. "Untung diputusin sama pilot," ucap Dewi Perssik membaca komentar netizen. "Aku sering putusin dia, dianya yang nggak mau nih (menunjukkan layar ponselnya sedang video call Rully)" sambungnya.

Sebelumnya, Dewi Perssik dikabarkan putus dengan Rully berawal dari celetukannya di salah satu acara televisi. Ia mengaku sekarang masih sendiri membuat publik berasumsi jika Depe tak lagi bersama Rully. Dewi Perssik menegaskan jika gosip putus dengan Rully tersebut hanyalah karangan teman-temannya saja. Hingga saat ini, Dewi Perssik mengaku masih menjalin hubungan asmara dengan sang pilot. "Udah itu temen-temen yang buat (gosip), nggak ada (putus) masih aja (tunangan). Itu berita dari mana, aku enggak tahu," tutur Dewi Perssik.

The importance of representation in Film and TV

So today, I watched the Netflix documentary, “Disclosure” which followed iconic trans women across the film and tv industry discussing the history of trans representation in film. 

While I liked the film overall, there was one quote used that really stood out and it was cited from a person called Marian Wright Edelman, the president of the Children’s Defense Fund. 

The quote said, “Children can not be what they can not see...”

I can relate to that, in regards to my own questioning. As a kid, I had never realised that transitioning gender was an option, nor did I realise about the vast spectrum of gender identity that was there beyond the binary. 

It wasn’t until I started looking into the LGBT+ community when I was questioning my sexuality in secondary school that I learned of trans people and it wasn’t until Year 11, when I joined a local LGBT group that I would meet trans people in real life, especially around my age.

It was going through that process that I realised I had questions beneath the surface I didn’t realised I had. But why didn’t I ask those questions before?

To put it simply, there was little to no representation for me to take reference from. There was more than plenty enough reference to sexuality, both deregotary and respectful but it was there for us to see and learn from. However, I can’t even remember a show or film I watched around primary to early secodndary school where I saw a trans character on the screen.

This is a message that must be repeated, for every context that it applies to, from gender identitty to race to sexuality and so on, representation matters and we need more of it if we want to help ourselves find the answers to the questions we’ve all hidden inside ourselves.
