bc invariably, the cis lady version is smaller, longer hair, usually extremely femme- and the cis man is always taller, buffer, cut jaw, etc. and what adds to it is when there's an NB option that like, is perfectly mid-height, mid-hair length (or Quirky Shaved Style), androgynous at all times.

it's just. reinforcing the gender binary, but sometimes making it a trinary by treating all nb people as interchangeable

I have always wondered why most people like transmasc Taka more and why transmasc Mondo isn't really that popular. After giving it some thought, I think it might be due to some internalized anti-transmasculinity that people in the fandom have and, to be honest, I feel like this happens to ALL popular transmasc headcanons out there, sadly. Most of the Taka content makes me feel uncomfortable as I have said some times before, I don't know, it feels like to me that the transmasc headcanon is used to further feminize Taka as a whole, he is smaller than Mondo, he has more noticeable hips, in most of the fanon Ishimondo content, Taka is always treated as the "woman" in the relationship, and as a trans man it makes me feel icky.... Mondo is very masculine, he is tall, he has a muscular body, it seems like it's hard for people to view him as a trans man BECAUSE of his hyper masculinity, meanwhile most of the trans people I have met feel much more seen with MONDO'S experiences with gender, probably that can be because it's an important part of his character and his insecurities are connected to how he behaves, but it's still worth noting. It's also important to point out how Taka is often treated as a "small cute innocent beam who can do no wrong" and this is an experience most transmasculine people have to go through, I had to deal with people mentioning how I was so cute, how I could do nothing wrong, treating me like a fucking child, and I think these two things being connected isn't just a coincidence. And this treatment can't be done with Mondo because he CLEARLY isn't innocent, he is the leader of the biggest gang, he canonically kills someone even if it wasn't his intention, Mondo has a lot of wrong-doings, and perhaps this fact makes it more difficult for. some. people to view him as trans too?

My experience is that I feel more seen with Mondo, I relate to his struggles and he is quite honestly my inspiration for my transition, but of course, my gender presentation is very masculine and I love being a masculine man, not every transmasculine person presents the same way as I do and that's completely valid. There's lots of different transmasc people out there, but it's weird when your ONLY way of portraying a trans man is a small, skinny, light-skinned, feminine and very sexualized man 🤨 don't you think? I'm just saying..... These realizations are making me like transmasc Taka wayyy less than I used to, it's not everyone who does this of course but it makes me uncomfortable to the point of starting to not like that headcanon anymore.... It feels like the content is just made out of a fetish for transmasculine people, while trans Mondo is done with much more care and love for the transmasculine experience

I absolutely HC Chihiro as a Trans Woman. The whole "He was so brave to want to work out and be more mainly" plot line reads to me like desperation to not be perceived. Like literally stating, "he was happy as a girl, and good at it too." And then back tracking with uh oh everyone is gonna know your secret better beef up so no one makes fun of you... Or worse...

And then she outs herself to Mondo who immediately kills her. Like valid fear.

People don't want to admit Chihiro is legitimately trans because DR is so checking bad at representation and is in many cases actively homophobic (especially in THH). Admitting the nature of Chihiro's relationship with gender identity and expression asks some really tough questions about the rage Mondo felt that caused him to commit murder. Not to mention the clearly queer subtext happening between Mondo and Taka, can easily be implied as internalized homophobia brought on through social expectations and his role in his gang being brought into question.

Suffice it to say, I feel a personal pinch in my heart when people refer Chihiro as he. Although it isn't explicitly stated in Canon I feel like to continue to call Chihiro he actively goes against what the character is and is implied to represent

There are so many different ways a take can be bad, but one that's been on my mind lately due to Arcane was that one Total Drama fan insisting its homophobic not to ship a canon queer ship because you prefer a fanon queer ship.

Representation is amazing, but personally I'm here for a story. Something can be very progressive, and unbelievably boring. Considering my love for toxic dumpster fire ships, they tend to go hand-in-hand for me.

Wanted to compile a bunch of my headcanons here:

Celeste:

Starts off cold towards the class as in canon, but warms up to them. Becomes fiercly protective of them since they'rw her only friends

If she catches people bullying Toko, Chihiro, Taka, Hifumi, Makoto, etc she will retaliate

Is trying to come off super cool but is actually incredibly awkward. Most of the class still think she is cool after bedriending her

Extremely eager to show off her knowledge about her interests. Will just infodump on whoever is willing to listen.

Cries a lot in secret

Very insecure about her body and appearance

Also insecure about her interests that aren't gambling and European culture. Only Chihiro, Hifumi, Makoto, and Kyoko know she's into things like manga and video games. The rest suspect she's secretly a nerd.

Speaking of also prone to gamer rage and she's very thankful the dorms are sound proof

Secretly a My Little Pony fan. Only Chihiro knows because they made a joke while they were hanging out once about her name and noticed her panic. She took her first name from Princess Celestia. Also why she calls the others darling after befriending them.

If Byakuya's not around she'll be one of the first to offer to pay. She is bad at showing how much she values the others so she compensates with paying for meals or tickets to places

Basically kind of a bitchy Rarity once she has gotten over herself and connected with everyone.

Sews her own clothes, and eventually starts making clothes for the others with a discount on comissions

Gets roped into the obligatory D&D episode by Hifumi

Comes from a family that lived in poverty, got bullied as a kid as a result

Part of the bullying was being called a loser over and over again

Why she ends up being one of the first to stick up for the others

Has learned some self-defense to protect herself since she spends a lot of time illegally gambling

While she does drop more and more of her persona as time goes on, and is more authentic with everyone she still prefers the Celestia name and fancy clothing. They help her feel comfortable in her own skin.

She's only really comfortable using Taeko with the rest of Class 78, and even then not when they're out in public

Absolutely unable to cook well

Will start arguments with Byakuya, Leon, and/or Mondo for the fun of it.

Her and Makoto kinda confide in each other about how they feel like fakes next to everyone else.

She has read every single one of Toko"s books multiple times.

Ocassionally she will correct Hifumi when he gets something wrong about an anime and whistle innocently when people are stunned she knew that.

Makes the time to go to events the others are doing like Sayaka's concerts or Hina's swim meets.

Once she went with Hifumi to help sell his doujins. Ended up with Hifumi punching a guy in the face for creeping on her.

Sakura and Mondo also worry about her going to seedy parts of town to gamble and have discreetly followed her to make sure she's safe

She enjoys challenging Kyoko to various cars games

She also ends up enjoying discussing history with Taka

While at first she really hated Yasuhiro she did end up finding he could have surprisingly good advice from time to time.

Chihiro:

Trans girl. I accept any hcs on their gender. For me personally I just see them as a trans girl who compensated by trying to fit into a mold of manliness before realizing and accepting her identity.

She still likes to work out and try to get stronger.

Into making mods for video games

Has been into just about every embarassing fandom at one point or another. Superwholock, Homestuck, Undeetale, MLP, Steven Universe. She was overjoyed when she found out Celeste was too.

She will also haplily offer to pay for the others when Byakuya's not around. Her programming skills have made her a good amount of money, placing her just behind Celeste's wealth and 3rd highest overall

Also can not cook at all

Has a terrible sleep schedule, will need coffee as soon as she wakes up

While she identifies she/her she still doesn't have many feminine typical interests beyond the clothing.

Bottles up frustrations and anger, lets it out online in arguments.

Genuinely admires all of her classmates

Besides Makoto she is the most popular person in her class

Cries a lot too, but openly

She has written a program for each classmate that helps with their talent in some way

Celeshiro:

They kept it a secret for a long time

While keeping it a secret everyone thought they were just crushing on each other and kept trying to get them together

They kept playing it off pretending not to get it

Kyoko knew from the start

When they finally let the others know it was after they had an argument that was their first big argument.

They like spending a lot of time together in their dorms watching movies/tv, playing games together, being affectionate, and talking a lot

Because they both have a lot of hang ups they end up comforting one another a lot.

Said this before but Celeste ended up trauma dumping on the first date.

Celeste also had a panic attack prior to the date

In general even though it seems like Celeste is the cool mature one, Chihiro is the one that's more mature

Chihiro is drawn to Celeste because she thinks she is cool, that she is protective, and admires her willpower

Celeste is drawn to Chihiro because she loves her optimisim and friendliness. That she is not judgmental, and is always willing to listen to her ramblings

After they reveal their relationship they get a lot more affectionate in public

Chihiro also basically moves into Celeste's room.

Because Celeste forgets to lock her door a lot, they have been walked in on by every single one of their classmates at least once

They get married pretty quickly after graduating

While they don't really want to have kids the old fashioned way, they do get very adoption happy and they tend to spoil the kids. They might even run a foster home

Among them is Kokichi who Celeste likes to playfully have compete against Kyoko's protege Shuichi

Kyoko nor Chihiro even realize there's supposed to be a rivalry going on

Chihiro and Celeste are very cuddly. They find it difficult to get to sleep without touching the other in some way

Celeste makes Chihiro clothes for free

Because neither of them can cook they order take out a lot.

-Lang is Omni, and also a trans man, and if anyone complains about him wearing his shirt like that, or if he takes it off and someone complains, he’ll respond with the “hey I paid a lot of money to be shirtless/wear my shirt like this” joke, although I can also see his top surgery scars blending in well with his other scars cause he does have a crap ton (in my hcs anyways)

-Apollo: Gay Trans king. That’s it everyone go home.

-Klavier is Bi, he didn’t discover it until Apollo came along though, basically he was going around like “okay men are cute too I’ll admit not just the girls, but I’m still straight!” Than he actually fell in love with one he finally realized “…fuck I’m not straight am I” He is also trans, but is he a trans man or a trans woman, the answer is neither it’s a secret third option (Nonbinary and uses All pronouns)

-Kristoph is AroAce, I feel like this one’s kinda a hot take but, yeah to me he’s completely aromatic and asexual, no “Demi” about (insert the “Ace” attorney jokes let’s go let’s go)

it he’s not like completely completely against trying ether one but overall he’s like “Nope not interested keep your love story bullshit away from me.” Mixed with “I don’t need bitches. They disappoint me, *disco pose*” But yet he’s not aware he’s Aroace, he just thinks it’s normal, (in my AA swap au he realizes and embraces it a bit though)

as for gender, is he cis? is he trans? Nobody knows (secretly a trans man pretending to be a cis man, only Klavier knows this)

-Blackquill is unknown, by anyone, not even him himself, he’s definitely not straight though. Actually if he tells you he’s straight he says it like a joke and/or is trying not to laugh when doing so, also trans. You’ll never know in what way though

-Larry is straight and cis, which is canon anyways, I may ship some gay ships with him (like with lang-) but I overall see him as straight like in canon, Plus its fucking hilarious to picture him as the only straight and cis man in all of Japanifornia/hj

Sexuality Headcanon:

Now, see, starting off with a kinda hard one... Taka's an interesting bean in what I calculate his sexuality to be. Most people assume Gay since... ya know. And while I don't think that's necessarily a bad take, its the popular take. And I am one who tends to shy away from popular takes. (I am also one to vehemently project onto the characters I love). Hence, I HC Taka as Demiromantic! (and demisexual to an extent...)

Forms strong emotional bonds with people close to him? Check. Only ever seems to fall romantically for those he is extremely close with??? DOuble check babeyyy!

Gender Headcanon:

Aaaand now its simple. Taka's a male. Cut and dry. Rather fondly a guy, I must say. He strikes me as the kinda guy who would be so excited to share with you that he uses he/him pronouns! He probably did some soul searching when he first learned of transitioning and other gender orientations only to find he was rather comfortable and happy where he was. (you know he spent hours studying to learn all he could) and would be all for helping others explore their gender too!

I know a lot of people hc him and mondo both as trans, but personally I think hes just very proud of his manliness.

A ship I have with said character:

I couullddd go the easy route and say Ishimondo... But you all already know that. Instead I'm going to go with a more... scandalous... ship.

Its KiyoKiyo. Korekiyo and Kiyotaka. Its my guilty pleasure ship.

There are so many... who do I begin with... Genuinely who do I begin with. Alr I hardly see this one in the wild but Kokichi and Kiyotaka I despise. Either that's just because I hate kokichi but-- BESIDES THE POINT. Hiro and Taka is another one I don't particularly like.

I get where it comes from, the few times they interract in the canon could be seen as brotherly (I GUESS) from Hiro's standpoint but-- Idk it just kinda rubs me the wrong way. Hiro's character in general does that...

A Random Headcanon:

Taka enjoys, and is really good at boxing. (Or wrestling) Like how some stories I've read put him on the football (soccer for us americans) team (or rugby ig idk.) I have a (self-inflicted) HC that Taka has slight anger issues hes still recovering from as a child and ABSOLUTELY uses the environment of controlled violence as a way to work off pent up steam. Any sport could do that really, but the inherent homoeroticism of wrestling is just *mwah* too good to pass up.

I know people like to HC he's into some kind of martial arts lessons for the same kind of vibe, and the art of him and Peko, but I find the inante physicality of using yer fists and body as a much more... *Taka Centric* activity. Idk.

Its the same reason he really enjoys thrill rides like rollercoasters and horror movies (if he can stand to not postulate the entire plot the whole time, ruining climactic moments and making people shush him.)

Well. My main one is that he's transmasc. (Prob, mostly projecting.) His wife was also trans and they were a cute t4t couple (and childhood best friends.)

Takaaki starved himself just so Taka could eat more. It became a really bad habit and it took a huge toll on his health, but he'd do it for his boy. His boy deserved to have more to eat over him. (He'll just survive off of coffee, cigarettes and whatever small thing he can maybe force down his throat. He honestly struggles to take care of himself after a while.)

Takaaki has the same twisted humor as Taka. (It's where Taka gets it from most DEFINITELY.)

Takaaki wears gray contacts to cover his red eyes because they remind him of Toranosuke.

He's secretly codependent on Taka because without Taka he can't really have much reason to live. (*looks over at canon*) He doesn't mean to be, but he really can't find any other reasons to want to be around anymore. Especially after all the bullshit he's gone through. You get a little fucked up in the head when your dad has been nothing but the reason you feel worthless in life and your entire life has gone down the shitter. (That man can't be sane.)

Transgender, Non-Binary and Gender Diversity in Star Wars

As of 2019, the only transgender characters found in Star Wars are human and non-binary, Taka Jamoreesa from Last Shot and Eleodie Maracavanya from Aftermath. While out of universe, authors Daniel Jose Older and Chuck Wendig have referred to both characters as non-binary, in-universe there is not a term for their genders. In “An Incident Report,” (In From a Certain Point of View) the word “neutrois” is used in the context we use non-binary as a rough umbrella term: “the hardworking men, women, and neutrois.” It’s worth noting this short story was written by Daniel Mallory Ortberg, who is queer and transgender.  Another reference to genders outside the binary and evidence of the wider gender diversity in the galaxy in where Bloodline, in a scene where Leia notes seeing people of “at least four genders.”  Despite these references, there is not yet an in-universe term for transgender and we have yet to see a trans man or trans woman character.  Outside of humanity, there’s also the Chalhuddan species who appear in Leia: Princess of Alderaan. They can be termed ‘genderfluid’ in that their species have five different genders which they shift between over their lifetimes.  This is a universal experience among the species, and the one named character from this species is Occo Quentto, who is referred to by they/them pronouns throughout the book (more on this later!)  

We don’t know much about what avenues for physical transition exist in a galaxy far far away, but Lost Stars does contain one reference:

“I’m going to freeze my choobies off” “There are easier ways to switch genders, you know.” “I didn’t mean I wanted to freeze ‘em off. I just meant–it’s so cold.”

Choobies is slang for testicles, so they’re referring to something akin to gender affirming surgery–although whether it’s achieved through surgery or some other cool sci-fi means is anyone’s guess. It is worth noting the casual tone of the conversation and that these characters (Thane Kyrell and Dak Ralter) don’t attach any stigma to it.  Just a bit of ribbing Thane for complaining about the Hoth cold.  In the same vein, both Eleodie and Taka are not met with any hostility regarding their genders in the book. In fact, Eleodie has just about the coolest most glorifying introduction ever: “His highness, her glory, his wonder, her luminous magnificence—the picaroon! The plunderer! The pirate ruler of Wild Space! The glorious knave, Eleodie Maracavanya!”

When it comes to pronouns, while the sample is very small, so far the nonbinary characters in Star Wars are as diverse as in the real world.  Taka uses “they” pronouns and Eleodie primarily uses “zhe,” but swaps in “he” and “she” pronouns too.  Among non-humans, the Chalhuddans mentioned above have particularly interesting pronoun conventions. I’ll let C-3PO explain: “Their native pronoun cases are rather complex–indicating not only current gender but two or three previous ones, and occasionally the gender they feel most likely to be next, bus as our language has no equivalent words, ‘you’ or ‘they’ can be used in all cases.”  Wookiees also have gender neutral pronouns and in Shyriiwook, there is at least one “gender nonspecific honorific pronoun,” as noted in Doctor Aphra Annual 1.

On the whole, while the Star Wars franchise has a ways to go, there’s some nice groundwork for more trans characters.  The two that we have are both very cool and were created by authors who have both been publicly very defensive of their LGBT characters (PLEASE Del Rey bring them back!).  The mentions of a more diverse gender spectrum, both with straight up sci fi alien stuff and regular ol’ transgender people (in SPACE!) is really great to see running through a variety of Star Wars works.  If we’re lucky then Claudia Gray, who’s referenced the topic in each of her novels so far, will go all out and include a (major 🙏) trans character in Master & Apprentice! On the whole Lucasfilm needs to do A LOT more, but what there is makes me hopeful for a positive future.
