So sometime towards the end of the third age not long after Fingon was reborn Anaire finally gets round to asking Fingon if Gil Galad is actually his son.
Fingon who has heard these rumours before, denies it saying that Maedhros was the only one he ever loved and he would never have married or fathered a child with another. Even if their relationship was only a rumour to those outside their family, the idea of him marrying another is both insulting and infuriating. Fingon has never met this Gil Galad guy but as soon has he’s reborn Fingon plans to confront him on his lies.
At which, Anaire points out that technically Maedhros was not born a man and it would be entirely possible that Gil Galad was both of their’s.
At this Fingon kind of pauses. He hadn’t really considered that before. He doesn’t think its likely, afterall most of the times elves have to be trying to conceive in order to get pregnant. But… it’s not unknown that moments of passion and heightened emotions can lead to happy little accidents. Aredhel, herself was one of those happy little accidents. And the last night he and Maedhros spent together was certainly passionate. A moment in a time before what they thought would either be their greatest victory or worst defeat.
Fingon doesnt like this idea, doesnt like the idea that he left the love of his love alone and pregnant and hurting in a dying continent. But… if there was even the slightest chance that Gil Galad was his son then Fingon had a duty to find out.
So Fingons starts investigating hunting down those close to his supposed son and anyone else he thought might have information. Not many Feanorians stay in Valinor and certainly not those who closely served Maedhros. Most remain across the sea or in the Halls of Mandos and as he is forbidden from sailing and knows that Mandos would not be particularly pleased to see him again, he doesnt have very many people to ask about this.
Its not until Elrond travels across the sea that Fingon really has hope of getting any answers. He gathers his courage and marches to the house of the child his lover kidnapped, to ask for his help. For someone who by all rights should hate Maedhros, Elrond is suprisingly helpful. He looks kindly at Fingon and grants him access to the letters Maedhros kept in Amon Ereb. There isn’t much in these letter but one of them written by Celegorm reports something had been safely and secretly delivered to Cirdan.
He thinks it’s really quite likely at this point that Gil Galad is his son but the final confirmation comes when Elladan and Elrohir arrive in Valinor bringing a haggard half faded Maglor with them.

Gil-Galad, son of Russingon. Except, Fingon and Maedhros refuse to say which of them bore him.
Like, one of them is certainly a trans dude, but Mandos gives elves their preferred gender shape after reembodiment. So there isn’t actually any evidence and the people who knew Russingon as kids aren’t saying anything.
Anyway, Russingon are absolutely little shits over it.
The Nosy Historians will start suspecting Maedhros, and Fingon will say something about having wider hips and wow Maedhros sure has a skinny bone structure. So tall, too.
The Nosy Historians will suspect Fingon, and Maedhros will start talking about all of Fingon’s wild (unladylike) adventures in their youth.
This is, of course, just Russingon using transphobic assumptions against the Nosy Historians, as if every woman has wide hips or young girls don’t do wild adventures. As if women can’t be tall. But it’s too much fun watching the Nosy Historians run around like headless chickens for Russingon to stop lmao.
The best part is that Gil-Galad doesn’t know either.

Teenage Fingon and Maedhros!
I came up with a whole story (practically an entire fic idea lol 😅) for this illustration. It takes place during an extended family vacation in some snowy mountaintops in Aman, (can you imagine not Only the shenanigans the extended finwean family would get up to but also the drama involved with having everyone basically camping under one log cabin roof LMAO), and Fingon, who absolutely idolizes his older cousin Mae, finally musters up the courage to, while on a skiing adventure just the two of them, to come out as trans and Maedhros is just like: *vibrates with excitement* "this is the best news ever i'm gonna teach you everything I know about being a dude" and henceforth the two were inseparable buddies 🥹
I imagine Mae as the first person that Fingon feels comfortable coming out to in this fic idea... and Mae's immediate and enthusiastic encouragement and acceptance is at least partly why Fingon remains his loyal friend for the remainder of their days :')

Ok, but i can just imagine, many years post canon in valinor when legolas is visiting the twins at the same time as the kidnap dads are visiting elrond:
Maglor, trying to be friendly with his grandsons’ friend: so... what are your thoughts in regards to the kinslayings?
Legolas: idk, i mean it’s not like i was directly affected by it so i can’t exactly hold out too much judgement. Also, while horrible, the shit ya’ll did does not even come near my top 100 fucked up things i’ve witnessed while in middle earth.
Maedhros: wasn’t- wasn’t your grandfather, oropher, from Doriath though?
Legolas: lmao, yeah, but if you think he didn’t contemplate murder, specifically regicide, a time or 100, then you’ve clearly never met him.
Legolas: besides, he once tried to destroy the world way back in the days before Orome stumbled across the elves, he has no leg to stand on.
Maedhros:...
Maglor: your dad, though?
Legolas: both my father and grandmother chose to stay with the silvans when they split off during the great journey. So even if grandfather Oropher had died in doriath, it wouldn’t have affected my existence.
Legolas: so like i said, it’s really not my place to hold a grudge against you when there are plenty of elves that were actually affected by it doing the job just fine.
.——————————————————
Btw, this is my Miriel and thranduil are twins au so don’t come at me with “but that’s not canon!”

So I’m just gonna say it. Finwe had 15 grandchildren and only two of them are female? Statistically it’s possible but come on, the odds are staggering. The Doylist explanation of this of course is good old fashioned gender roles, the Finweans were all extremely important and powerful, also mostly warriors and leaders, so Tolkien probably didn’t want to write too many of them as women. You know, he wanted these to be main characters. Tolkien doesn’t really seem to want to write many women at all which is a pity because the ones he did write were amazing.
The Watsonian explanation however is a lot more fun. Because I tend to believe that in universe a lot of them were actually female and a few transmasc as well and that some mortal historians along the line took one look at their story and thought ‘well this was clearly a warrior so they must be male,’ and they don’t really question it too much because Elvish names? Really androgynous (Maedhros? Caranthir? Laurefindel?!). So all of a sudden people are reading about the seven sons of Feanor and High King Fingon. And they read about trans and genderqueer elves and they can’t figure out the pronouns but then they read about them leading people into battle and they immediately go ‘oh, ok this one’s male too, I was confused for a bit.’ Ironically this is really affirming for the transmascs.
So it actually was a pretty even distribution of AMAB and AFAB grandchildren of Finwe but they all gradually got turned into guys by history. The ‘sons’ of Feanor too, I mean seriously who has seven sons and no daughters. Also in what universe are Maglor, Curufin and Caranthir cis men? Not mine. Finrod is genderqueer (oh wait, that’s just canon). Maedhros and Fingon were gnc lesbians.

In Town #03
[for Maedhros and Maglor week, hosted by @maedhrosmaglorweek]
“Hello, Laurë,” Maryann said, seeing the barefooted child holding one of her little brother’s hands as they looked at the tins of hard candies kept behind a glass display case in the general store.
The girl glanced over at her and turned away without answering, hunching her shoulders like she didn’t want to be noticed. She appeared as dirty and boyish as ever, wearing a patched pair of pants and an old linen shirt that Maryann was sure she’d seen the oldest child in when he was her size.
The town school teacher sighed. She felt disappointed, seeing yet another daughter in the community saddled with chores and childcare at the expense of an education and the chance to find more in life than a husband to care for and more children. There was very little she could do about it, though.
Laurë’s family lived in the mountains. From what people said in town, the family lived there for several generations as active members of the community, and it wasn’t until the last ten years or so after most of them moved away that the remaining members became more reclusive. The father was a suspicious man and rumor had it he was mad as a child and probably still was. He cared not one whit about any social pressure Maryann exerted over the continued absence of his children from the schoolhouse. The mother, a strong woman named Nerdanel, was something of a folk-healer who could be convinced to help when a doctor proved useless or unavailable. She tried speaking with her, suspecting she benefited from some formal education herself and hoped that would make her more open to discussion. However, she was met with a similar stony refusal. By now there was little hope of ever seeing the girl in one of her classes.
“He’s Maglor.”
She started at a voice so close behind her, bringing a hand up to her chest. She turned around and looked up at Laurë’s older brother. Though he couldn’t be older than fifteen, he was already as tall and broad as most grown men in town.
He glared down at her, arms occupied by two heavy burlap bags filled with some kind of drygood the family needed. “Don’t call him that again.”
Who? She didn’t think that was one of the children’s names and she was almost positive the little boy was named Curufin. Did he mean his sister? That didn’t make any sense.
“My apologies,” She said, noticing how his hands gripped the sacs, knuckles turning white. Stepping back to disengage from whatever was going on, she bid a hasty farewell and walked away, heading to the clerk to make her purchases.

There is a crib in the topmost tower of Himring.
The wood it is made of is polished and has elegant designs carves into it, small birds taking flight, flowers blossoming, the stars and the two trees all engraved. It truly is a fine piece, Feanor would have nothing less for his first child.
This was not the first time Fingon had seen it. He had first laid eyes upon it after being shoved into a storage closet in Feanor and Nerdanel’s townhouse in central Tirion after Maitimo’s parents had returned early from their date. The second time it had been in use by a small infant Tyelpe who was swaddled in blankets and pillows and attempted to pull on Fingon’s braids.
Seeing the crib again was would not be all that unusual. It was a family heirloom dearly held in his half uncle’s heart, it made sense it would be taken to Middle Earth.
Except that instead of being in an old storage room collecting dust or even in Tyelpe’s possession, as the youngest member of the House of Feanor, the Crib stood tall and beautiful against the wall in the small room connected to Maedhros’ bed chambers.
He walks closer to it, slowly and carefully as though something terrible may by hiding in it. Something terrible may indeed be hiding in it if Fingon’s suspicions are correct. Rarely is the truth kind but Fingon must know. He must know. It does not matter that the very thought causes his heart to seize in pain and his stomach to shift uneasily. He came here to Himring, the only part of Beleriand to not sink to the depths of the ocean, on a mission and he will not leave until he has the answers he seeks.
The small room, no, the nursery, has been very well preserved despite its age and the thick grey dust that makes a sheet over every object. Tapestries hang from the walls depicting scenes from fairytales that Fingon remembers being read in his own youth. The windows are tall and the curtains are light and flowing. Inside the crib are several different toys, a large fabric horse with actual horse hair sewn on it. A bunny with long ears one of which stand ramrod straight and the other which flops forward. A wooden figurine that looks a lot like Feanor. There are blankets too, rich luxurious things likely worth a fortune on their own in the war torn age of their making. It is the red blanket with a name embroidered in gold that attracts his attention the most.
Ereinion Gil-galad.
Any doubt is cast from his mind and Fingon falls forward onto his knees with a cry.
He had not believed the rumours at first, had thought the boy king a liar and a fraud had wanted to confront him as soon as he was released from Mandos but the gossips had been right. Gil Galad was his son.
Not only his son though. He pictured Maedhros, miserable and grieving, watching in the mirror as his stomach grew round with a child neither of them had expected. His eyes stung with tears that would not fall.
He had a child. He had a child. He had a child.
And his child had been dead for millennia.
The tears fell.

My first offering for @silmsmutweek drawing inspiration from the prompts for days two and three.
Day 2 tropes: canon characters, teasing, pregnancy
Day 3: trans and nonbinary identities, liege/vassal dynamics
It’s the long-delayed third installment of my trans Fëanorions series!
It is also a gift for the amazing @arofili and @pearlescentpearl who have both inspired so much with this series.

Gil Galad as a the Child of Fingon and trans Maedhros Headcanons pt 1
Maedhros calls all his brothers, except the Ambarussa who were staying with Finrod, to Himring and gets everyone else to leave them alone in the war room. At this point his brothers are really concerned that there is a serious military matter that not even their generals can know about and very anxious about what Maedhros is going to say.
Maedhros informs them that there is a serious diplomatic situation that has the potential to become absolute political carnage. Now everyone is really confused because weren’t Celegorm and Curufin far away from everyone important right now? Surely Maedhros has not caused a scandal. He’s the most diplomatic person alive. Then he tells them he’s pregnant.
Everyone takes a few minutes to register, not quite believing what they heard. Then Maglor asked the question that probably should have occurred to them all by now. ‘With who’s child’. If it was possible for the room to get more silent it did. All the brothers were incredibly uncomfortable with the realisation that one did not just conceive a child by themselves having never had any desire to think of their eldest brother in that sort of context.
Maedhros refuses to meet their eyes which is perhaps even more disconcerting. ‘Well that’s the diplomatic disaster part’. Celegorm privately thought the idea of the unmarried, military leader of most of the Noldor getting themselves knocked up without explanation was scandal enough but for once decided not to voice this. ‘It’s Findekáno’s’. The only thing Curvo could get out of his mouth was ‘What the fuck Nelyo.’ Celegorm stated ‘ Yep, we’re fucking screwed” and left it at that. Caranthir seemed to share this belief.
“So you’re telling me that right now you, the former high king of the Noldor and leader of the house of Feanor, are carrying the child of the eldest son of Nolofinwe, our current high king, and the heir to the throne. This could destroy our relationship with the Nolofinwëans and our own supporters alike! The sheer level of scandal this would be is unimaginable! This could absolutely destroy us altogether and send the entire family into political ruin!” Moryo proceeds to yell for a awhile.

A king of his own body
by leodesic (@elvinye)
After years of internal agony, he confessed one of these problems to his favourite cousins, who laughed at him. “Wanting to look nice does not mean you are a nís, Finno,” Maitimo told him. “It just means you’re vain. Look at Makalaurë, he can’t go five minutes without fishing for a compliment.” Fingon, currently Finno, has finally figured out he is a man. This story follows his process as he accepts himself, slowly expands the circle of people who know, and finally takes the leap and takes command of his own destiny.
