Dubai, UAE: Sleep. It's something that every living creature needs to function properly. But according to an edit in the New York Times recently, there's actually an economic case for letting kids sleep a little later. Not only is it better for health and academic performance, research shows how the impact of more sleep goes far beyond that. It can increase future salary earnings and reduce road traffic accidents too. So again, it begs the question: should school start times be pushed back here? For many parents in Dubai, the idea of delaying school by one hour is more of a "logistical need" than a personal want. But Khaleej Times also explored the economical impact of starting school later. According to a Brookings Institution policy brief from 2011 (cited in the New York Times edit on September 13, 2017), medical research documents important changes in the circadian rhythm during adolescence. What is witnessed during that change is a shift in children's internal clocks, to later bed and wake times. As such, it found that the academic benefit of later start times in school would be equivalent to about "two additional months of schooling"; that's because academic performance increases. And subsequently, that can add about $17,500 to a student's future earnings potential. Additionally, a systematic review titled: 'Delayed school start times and adolescent sleep' (US National Library of Medicine: National Institutes of Health), showed that when school start times were delayed by 60 minutes, sleep time increased by 77 minutes per weeknight. Meaning students got more sleep.
Need for sleep
With the return to school season in full flow here, parents and students across the city have found themselves being forced out of their beds by the dreaded alarm clock. With most schools starting between 7.30 am and 8 am, a 5.30 to 6 am rise is the daily norm for most parents Khaleej Times spoke to. With campuses spread out across the city, long school commutes add hours to most students' days. Couple that with the already early start time for schools here, early rises are unavoidable. But if school times were delayed, commutes would ease - as well as peak time traffic; a factor which could directly impact both student performance and economic growth. A previous statement by Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the board of executive directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), cited the "geographical distribution of schools" as one of the biggest challenges in Dubai's school transport sector. To ease that challenge, Thomas Edelmann, founder and managing director of RoadSafetyUAE told Khaleej Times he supports the idea of a staggered approach to school start hours. "(There are many) options to reduce the overall traffic load in the morning and afternoon peak times. 'Flexi hours' for schools (and offices) can certainly play an important role."
A quick insight
"When children are tired or short of sleep, it impacts on their body's ability to stabilise their mood and can intensify negative emotions. Studies suggest that younger children who have less than 10 hours sleep per night are less likely to do as they are told. In school, too little sleep will affect a child's concentration, memory and accuracy and there, negatively impact performance." - Esra Uzsayilir, educational psychologist, kidsFIRST Medical Center 'Sleep duration more important, not wake up time' Although the right amount of sleep has been shown improve academic performance, one sleep specialist Khaleej Times spoke to said this "does not automatically warrant a later school start time". Dr Sherif Fayed, pulmonologist and sleep specialist at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai said kids need to have energy, the ability to focus, concentrate, retain information, and be creative problem solvers in order to thrive academically. "All these skills do depend heavily on healthy, consistent sleep." But, from a medical perspective, he does not agree that a later school start time will directly impact school performance. "As long as a child is getting the right amount of sleep, they should be able to function well. The normal person should sleep 8-13 hours/day. It decrease gradually from preschool children up to teenagers. This is based on multi-centre research." Additionally, an extra hour's sleep at bedtime - and not in the morning - is more beneficial, from his point of view. "What we have learnt in medical school and from medical textbooks is that you need to sleep at night and work during the day. That's because sunlight releases melatonin, which stimulates the brain. So sleeping an extra hour in the morning, during daylight hours, is not the solution." However, he said in a city like Dubai, he can see the economic impact of schools starting later, due to the direct correlation with peak hour traffic. Flexi hours would ease traffic burden It would be great if schools get something like a 'flexi hours' option. Schools could pick a starting time fitting their specific traffic situation and the needs of their students. This flexibility would benefit the kids, keeping their resting time and their bio-rhythms in mind. It would also ease the traffic burden on school buses and private cars transporting students during peak times in the morning and afternoon. Traffic congestion brings out the worst in many road users, as stress levels increase. Questions like 'will I make it on time to the school/office/appointment?', in turn often results in reckless and inconsiderate behaviour like bullying, speeding, tailgating and so on. Hence, all options to reduce the overall traffic load in morning and afternoon peak times should be considered. 'Flexi hours' for schools (and offices) can certainly play an important role. - Thomas Edelmann, founder & managing director, RoadSafetyUAE Some school start times in Dubai:

ArabNews recently reported that ; Mattar Al-Tayer, director general of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said that Dubai aims to be a leader in driverless technology by 2030. The RTA is currently testing an autonomous aerial vehicle (AAV) in cooperation with the Ehang Company of China, he said. “The AAV on display at the World Government Summit is not just a model but it has really flown in Dubai skies. RTA will spare no effort to launch the AAV in July 2017,” Al-Tayer said. The “flying car” resembles a giant drone, with eight propellers, and was seen in the video carrying one passenger. It can carry a weight of 100kg and cargo the size of a small suitcase. Al-Tayer said driverless vehicles, minibuses and boats are being trialled in Dubai; the second phase of the Dubai Tram will have fully driverless trams; and a study has been commissioned on the deployment of driverless express shuttle buses and taxis.“Autonomous mobility… technology has been tested in several countries including Dubai, Singapore, the United States and Britain.
Tumblr media
The Government of Dubai is leading the transition to driverless mobility in Dubai and is planning to take a leading position worldwide in autonomous mobility by 2030, whereas in other cities and countries, it is the private sector that leads the process,” Al-Tayer said. “Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, has launched the Dubai Smart Autonomous Mobility Strategy where 25 percent of all journeys in Dubai would be transformed into driverless journeys by 2030. We anticipate that the percentage of journeys that would be made by the driverless Dubai Metro to reach 12.2% by 2030 compared with 8.8% in 2016. We anticipate that the percentage of journeys made by autonomous buses to reach 6.4% by 2030.” Al-Tayer told the World Government Summit that Dubai has carved out a “nifty niche” for itself in the development of driverless technology. “Dubai has also started the test run of driverless minibuses, vehicles and boats, besides considering the options of deploying driverless express shuttle buses, and taxicabs from some leading companies,” he said. Al-Tayer pointed however to four key challenges facing the autonomous vehicle technology: infrastructure — including map updates, road markings and traffic lights — laws and legislation, safety and public acceptance of driverless vehicles, and technological requirements. Besides these global challenges, there are other challenges facing Dubai including harsh weather conditions and the corresponding impact on driverless transportation technological systems, and the social makeup of Dubai, which may increase people’s reluctance to embrace modern technology, Al-Tayer said. “To cope with these challenges, we have prepared Dubai Smart Autonomous Mobility Strategy which, compared to other global strategies, is characterized by the leading role of the Government of Dubai in the transition to driverless mobility, while in other cities and countries, it is the private sector that leads the process. Moreover, Dubai’s vision incorporates all mass transit modes such as trains, buses, marine transit modes and taxis, as well as private vehicles, while many countries focus on a limited number of transit modes.”
Tumblr media
Al-Tayer was upbeat about the promising future of this technology. “The journey on an autonomous vehicle will soon be like boarding a lift. All of us trust the closed box that lifts us to different levels as we know it is secure, ready and tested. This is what the RTA is seeking to achieve through autonomous mobility strategy and associated initiatives,” he said. Inhabitat also made this report ;And people could be trusting the  with their lives sooner, rather than later, as the head of Dubai’s transportation authority has told the Kuwait Times his ministry is already experimenting with using the autonomous vehicle in-flight.Dubai’s experiments with autonomous drone taxis are just one part of its forward-thinking approach to transport. The country is also the future home of the Elon Musk’s first Hyperloop project, which will connect Abu Dhabi to Dubai, a 100-mile trip that will take just 12 minutes. These great transportation trends is going to really set a new trend in the world of Technology.Just imagine yourself in this drone taxi's, to me this is going to be very great experience in the future of drones. The report has covered the current short term and long term impact on the market, same will help decision makers to prepare the outline for short term and long term strategies for companies by region.
Middle-East Hyperloop Technology Market
The advanced and high-tech transport system called Hyperloop was projected by entrepreneur Elon Musk when he proposed a "fifth transportation mode" in 2012. As per the concept of hyperloop technology, commuters travel through the tube with the help of a pod and has a speed of more than 700mph.
The quick expansion and increase in interest to commercialize the Hyperloop technology have developed speedily with a large number of inventors showing their importance and backing the projects. Hyperloop would see pods carrying passengers travel at extremely high speeds through a resistance free and frictionless tube having a near-vacuum atmosphere. These pods would either use the magnetic levitation technology float or float within a frictionless less tube to travel from one place to another.
Hyperloop technology is accepted globally with the government from all over the world focusing on introducing this new technology. The high cost and infrastructure have made Middle-East a preferable location for investors all around the world. The growth and expansion of hyperloop technology in Middle-east are changing rapidly due to the extra emphasis of the government to introduce the new transport system.
The Roads and Transport Authority or RTA has unveiled the preliminary design of the Hyperloop project that aims to transform travel by reducing the journey from Dubai to Abu Dhabi in just 12 minutes. Hyperloop, that has formed a part of RTA’s initiatives made for the Dubai Future Accelerators, was exhibited and shown for the first time in the world.
It was done after collaborating with Virgin Hyperloop One as part of its participation in the UAE Innovation Month. The US-based company Hyperloop One has agreed to go ahead with this deal in Dubai to analyze building of a new 500mph train to Abu Dhabi, crossing a distance of 150km in just 12 minutes. The new high-speed transport link building between Dubai and Abu Dhabi would cut travel time to a great extent between the two important cities. The dire traffic environments that were long suffered by commuters traveling between Dubai and Abu Dhabi typically necessitates the need for a faster journey eventually leading to the advent of Hyperloop.
The UAE, Dubai and Saudi Arabia are a few major countries that have contributed to the growth of the Hyperloop Technology market in Middle-east. These countries have signed a pact with companies implementing hyperloop technology for faster commercialization of these new transport systems. The Middle-east region has monitored one of the highest growth globally owing to the enhanced focus on the infrastructure as well as large investments coming from foreign countries.
