The market is also witnessing increasing adoption of ablative laser resurfacing (ALR) and non-ablative fractional lasers (NAFL) as the approach can offer improvement in the pigmentation and thickness of surgical scars, atrophic scars, hypertrophic scars, and hypopigmented scars. Construction materials shortage: Which building merchants been affected during the coronavirus pandemic?
Tumblr media
Last updated: 20th May 2021
Building merchants and related stores have been confirmed as essential retail by the government during the coronavirus pandemic. However, due to high demand during this time amongst other factors, there is currently a shortage of construction materials. This has also led to an increase in the prices of some products.
To help you find the materials you need to continue working during this period, we’ve put together a list of updates from popular UK builders’ merchants, including the services available, any extra steps you need to take as a customer and changes to opening times.
Tumblr media
Building merchants open for browsing and purchasing
Screwfix
All stores are open for browsing and Click & Collect. Home and site delivery is also available. Delivery times are currently longer than usual and some product lines might be limited.
Kingfisher plc (the owner of Screwfix and B&Q) recently said that some of their suppliers have faced a challenge in keeping up with high order levels due to the coronavirus pandemic and a container ship blockage in the Suez Canal. However, they’ve said that they’ll try to keep costs down. They’ve also asked customers to shop responsibly and only buy what’s necessary.
In light of the construction materials shortage, Screwfix has clearly labelled any products with low stock on their website, so you can plan ahead. They’ve also said they’re working with their suppliers to fix any issues with stock.
Orders made by customers in Northern Ireland might be delayed due to Brexit and the possibility of increased traffic and congestion at ferry ports.
Using Click and Collect keeps you safe by:
Allowing you to browse safely on your own device.
Letting you check stock online so that you can reduce the number of unnecessary journeys you’re taking.
Giving you SMS confirmation that your product is ready for you to pick up. Don’t visit a store to collect your order unless you’ve received confirmation that it’s ready.
Reducing the amount of time you spend in store.
For home and site deliveries, you’ll get an email once your order’s on it’s way. On the delivery day, you’ll get an SMS with a time slot. Many Click & Collect orders will be ready in 1 minute, but others can take between 24 and 48 hours to arrive in your selected store. Make sure you’ve got your ‘Ready to collect’ SMS before heading to the store.
You can also visit a store to place an order for home delivery or click and collect. Stores are open from 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 6pm on Saturdays. On Sundays, opening hours are 9am to 4pm/1pm to 6pm in NI. You should check your local store’s opening hours before visiting, as some have been reduced or changed.
In terms of coronavirus safety procedures, stores are operating a one-way system and have signage and floor stickers to help you with this.
youtube
Visit the Screwfix website for updates on delivery and store openings.
Jewson
Stores are open for browsing or purchasing, and home delivery and Click and Collect services are running.
Jewson’s April stock update says that they have good availability of their Blue Tick range and certain landscaping products during the construction materials shortage. However, they also have:
Introduced an allocation process for cement. This means that certain products are limited to 5 per order.
Less availability of imported carcassing due to increased demand and an increase in shipments of timber to America.
Increased the prices of certain drainage and timber products. You can see the exact percentage increases on the Jewson website.
Additional lead times for orders of some landscaping products, such as fencing and sandstone, and some timber items, such as imported carcassing and battens.
Less availability of cement and kiln dried sand in plastic bags. They’re recommending that you swap these items for alternatives in plastic bags or ‘tough bags’.
You can shop with Jewson:
Online, using your smartphone, tablet or PC for local branch collection within an hour (if ordered before 4pm) or delivery to site (if ordered before 12pm). You can find out if your local branch is offering Click and Collect using the Branch Finder.
In branch, to collect materials or Tool Hire.
All site deliveries will be made within social distancing guidelines. The driver will contact you by phone before making your delivery. They’ll also deliver to the kerbside and you won’t have to sign any paperwork.
youtube
Keep up to date with any changes to Jewson’s operations on their website.
Selco Builders Warehouse
Tumblr media
All branches are open for browsing and purchasing, as well as for Click & Collect and Click & Deliver services.
However, Selco has said they’re facing extremely high demand for certain products. So, they’re working with their suppliers every day to increase stock levels of these items. Due to the demand, they’re only able to deliver within a 10 mile radius of each branch. They’ll also limit the number of people in store, as necessary.
During this time, the times and dates available for Click & Collect may be limited. Plus, it’s unavailable on Sundays at the moment.
To help keep you safe, Selco is:
Encouraging all customers to pay with card or contactless where possible.
Using 2-metre markers to help you and staff maintain social distancing, including queue markers.
Using protective screening at tills and trade counters.
Implementing strict cleaning, handwashing and hygiene procedures in place.
In-branch services, such as sheet material cutting, paint matching and brick matching, are available at all branches. Plus, selected cafes are open for dining in and takeaways. Use the Branch Finder to find out the opening hours for your local branch.
For more FAQs, visit selcobw.com.
B&Q
All stores are open for browsing and purchasing.
In line with local restrictions, some areas within individual stores are closed.
Kingfisher plc (the owner of B&Q and Screwfix) recently said that some of their suppliers have faced a challenge in keeping up with high order levels due to the coronavirus pandemic and a container ship blockage in the Suez Canal. However, they’ve said that they’ll try to keep costs down. They’ve also asked customers to shop responsibly and only buy what’s necessary.
You can use the 1 hour Click and Collect service at your local store. If you place your order within an hour of the store closing, your items will be ready to collect the next day.
B&Q have found that their stores are quieter in the morning and late afternoon, so they’re advising customers to come during those times to beat the queues.
Home deliveries are still running – you can place your order on www.diy.com. This includes standard delivery, named day delivery, bulk delivery and same day delivery. Deliveries are currently running on time, but if this changes then the delivery crew will contact you ahead of time.
B&Q has made some changes to the way they deliver their orders. This includes:
Most orders will be delivered to the front door.
Some items will be delivered to the kerb outside the home or to a ground floor room. You’ll get an email before your delivery date if that’s the case. If you don’t want the delivery team to enter your property, they can leave your order by your front door.
The delivery team will conduct a risk assessment at the time of delivery.
Stores have social distancing measures in place, including sanitiser stations, 2metre floor markers and perspex screens at checkouts.
youtube
Stay up to date with any changes to these services on the B&Q website.
Travis Perkins
Tumblr media
All branches are open, including for delivery and free 1 hour Click & Collect.
Travis Perkins has said that there may be supply issues with certain products and that it’s best to contact your local branch if you need to. They’ve also asked customers not to over order.
Online orders can be placed for home or site deliveries between Monday and Sunday. However, they are currently facing a high volume of orders. All deliveries will be made to the kerbside and will need a signature. If the delivery team deems the delivery location to be unsafe (locations with overhead power cables present, for example) then they will contact you to rearrange delivery.
Tool hire is also available too – check out Travis’ Perkins video below to find out how it works.
youtube
Take a look at Travis Perkins’ FAQs and service updates here.
Wolseley UK
Tumblr media
All branches are open for browsing and purchasing.
Wolseley asks that you check for any disruptions to service or supply at the branch you’d like to visit using their branch finder, before heading there.
They have also put additional procedures in place to ensure that products are available as normal, including:
Working with their suppliers to maximise output and schedule deliveries into their sites.
Finding alternative products for you if there are any supply issues.
Setting up COVID-19 safety measures within Distribution Centres to reduce the risk of a full shutdown (which would lead to supply delays).
Implementing COVID-19 safety measures in store and setting up risk assessments and guidelines for drivers and supplier deliveries.
Deliveries are available to a home, office or site. However, Wolseley has said that they are prioritising delivery for essential services until further notice. Visit their delivery page for real-time updates for your area.
Express Delivery (arrives the next working day) is available. However, this service has been impacted by UPS relaxing transit times until further notice. This means that pre-12pm Express Delivery orders will be delivered by 2pm and pre-10:30am orders will be delivered by 12pm.
Some Express Delivery services aren’t available in certain locations:
Next Day (pre-5pm): Northern Ireland and Channel Islands.
Pre-10:30 am and pre-12pm: Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland, Cornwall and Channel Islands.
At the time of writing, deliveries outside of County Antrim and County Down in Northern Ireland are only available to Trade Account holders by prior arrangement. Get in touch with your local branch to discuss this.
Click and Collect services are also available for all customers, from their 450 branches. You can check whether a product is available for collection using the ‘Check Stock Availability’ button on the product page.
vimeo
For a list of the branches that are temporarily closed, contact details of Wolseley’s customer service team and any service updates, check out their website.
Wickes
All stores and showrooms are open for browsing and purchasing.
Stores have social distancing measures in place, including one-way systems and trolley cleaning. On 26th April 2021, Wickes put some extra safety steps in place within stores in areas identified as high risk for the new coronavirus variant. These stores will remain open but there is now a limit of 20 customers in store at one time and only 2 people can shop together. A queue system is in place.
Home deliveries are still running, and delivery slots are available up to 7 days in advance. Additional delivery slots are released daily.
Contactless Click and Collect is also available 7 days a week, and orders will usually be ready to collect from your local store within 1 working hour after placing your order. It can occasionally take longer than this, so make sure you’ve received confirmation that your order’s ready to collect before heading to your local store.
youtube
Wickes is also offering a free virtual showroom kitchen & bathroom design service. Design appointments are only available virtually.
Check the Wickes website for the latest service updates.
Toolstation
Tumblr media
All stores are open for browsing, purchasing and Click & Collect.
Home deliveries are also available. This includes delivery direct from the supplier. Specific delivery times will be displayed on the relevant product pages; these will depend on the supplier and the type of product. If your order contains items that come direct from Screwfix as well as from a supplier, then your order will be split into multiple deliveries, which may have different lead times.
You can place an order for Click and Collect by:
Ordering your items on www.toolstation.com. Make sure to provide your mobile phone number so that you can get confirmation that your order is ready to collect.
Going to the store you’ve ordered your products to, only after you’ve got your text. Stores are open for Click and Collect from 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 7pm on Saturdays, and 9am to 4pm on Sundays. Some stores have different exceptions – visit the Toolstation website for more info.
Sticking to the 2metre social distancing guidelines whilst a store colleague shows you to the collection point at the entrance of the store.
Quoting your surname and the last 4 digits of your order number at the collection point.
Waiting to be called to step forward and then for the colleague to step back before picking up your items.
Branches are open from 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 7pm on Saturdays, and 9am to 4pm on Sundays. However, some stores have special opening hours – find out which ones on the Toolstation website.
Home and site deliveries are available, too. This includes:
Next Business Day, for orders placed before 9pm Monday to Thursday and before 6pm on Sunday.
Saturday delivery (when placed before 6pm on Friday) and Sunday delivery (when placed before 4pm on Saturday).
Pre-12 delivery is now available for the UK mainland only. Place your order before 9pm, Monday to Thursday. Orders placed after that, or before 6pm on Sunday, will be delivered by 12pm on Monday.
For more coronavirus updates on in-store shopping, Click & Collect and home delivery services, go to the Toolstation website.
If you, or a homeowner that you’re carrying work out for, show any symptoms of coronavirus, don’t start or continue any work, and make sure to follow the NHS self-isolation requirements.
Note: The government has confirmed that there is no limit to the group size when you are meeting or gathering for work. But, workplaces should be set up to meet the COVID-secure guidelines – follow the government’s guidance on how to return to work safely.
Note: Countries may approach the different phases of lockdown differently. This guidance is in line with the UK government’s advice and is being followed in England. See the specific government websites for any differences.
Note: You must follow the restrictions for your local area. Find out the local restriction tiers for each area in England on Gov.uk. You can also view the UK government guidelines on Gov.uk.

A view from the A270
Seeking refuge along the Lewes Road in Brighton & Hove’s forgotten suburbs
Tumblr media
At its source, the A270 divides the affluent Hanover area with its crescents, private roads and estate agents from ‘The Level’, the preferred daytime refuge for many of the city’s heterogenous groups. The socio-economic divide that plagues Brighton & Hove is encapsulated topographically here. This series of photos explores the in-between spaces or heterotopia that mark the arterial drag that is the Lewes Road. I wondered what spaces of refuge or evidence of local community exist along the way? As a former Sussex postgrad (MA Digital Documentary) I rarely ventured beyond the Falmer campus, instead heading in the opposite direction towards home in Kent. Nevertheless, the Lewes Road area is home to a sizeable proportion of Brighton & Hove’s student population. Many of my fellow students lived here but have since moved on.
Tumblr media
Unusually, the A270 begins as two separate one-way streets, a fork created by ‘The Level’ which merges into two-way traffic at the Vogue gyratory. Named after the former Vogue Cinema which was replaced by a Sainsbury’s supermarket in 1985, the Vogue was an X-rated film and strip club in the 1970s. Even today, iconic Brighton & Hove landmarks such as the pier, the Royal Pavilion, The Dome, Victoria Gardens couldn’t seem further away amidst the endless commuter traffic of the gyratory. The A270 then snakes its way north-eastwards to the neighbouring town of Lewes via the sprawling suburbs of Bevendean, Moulescoomb, Coldean and the Falmer campuses of Brighton and Sussex universities.
Tumblr media
This series of 27 sequential images therefore reflects the A270 that inspired them; images are displayed as they were captured one afternoon on Easter Saturday. Most students had gone home for the weekend and ‘the Albion’ were at home to Leicester City. Apart from the odd pedestrian, the streets were mostly deserted. This helped me avoid reproducing unhelpful social stereotypes of hooded youths, gangs and ‘asbos’ that arguably occupy the social imaginary of the area. One of the problems with bearing witness to a socially deprived area through the photograph is sensationalising its aesthetic of decay. I sought to subjectively frame details which interested me; lines, perspectives, disparate features that are subversively characterful. Much of Brighton centre has become ‘hipsterfied’ or 'studentified', sterilised by modern developments and commercial property. Instead, the spaces depicted herein seem to intrinsically counter that narrative. I sought therefore not to sensationalise or romanticise a downtrodden area but where possible, to create or restore former spaces of refuge or 'heterotopia' within the images themselves.

This is Wagner Memorial Hall named after Rev Arthur Wagner who commissioned the construction of adjacent St Bartholomew’s Church. This upset locals who complained that the excessive height of the building (as the tallest church in Britain) stopped their chimneys from drawing properly. Wagner bought all 400 neighbouring houses and subsequently reduced the rents.

The Bernard Oppenheimer Diamond Works was a diamond polishing factory built 100 years ago. It provided work and refuge for the majority of Brighton & Hove’s disabled war heroes, some of whom were amputees needing specialist treatment. Like the nearby more modern St. George’s hall in Moulsecoomb, halls like this one build in 1949 which were once community meeting grounds are now often left empty with staff blaming changing demographics in the community.

Behind this junction at the end of Queensdown Rd is Homewood College, a community special school. Accessible only by foot from Moulsecoomb Station are Brighton & Hove Pupil Referral Unit and Cedar Centre Special School. The absence of these schools in image was both an aesthetic and political decision, reflecting on the otherwise hidden nature of their geographical location.
Tumblr media
Since the mid-eighties, the twin phenomena of the Right to Buy scheme and the 1992 Universities Act have had the dual effect of displacing once established communities in these post-war housing estates as many residents have cashed-in and moved out creating increasing numbers of tenanted HMOs (houses of multiple occupancy) to cater for the increased influx of students from University of Brighton. Situated on Bates Estate noted for its high incidents of report crime, this housing office closed down in March 2014 due to a decline in the number of people using the office. Local residents have rejected plans for a new block of flats on the site. This is in spite of a similar development in neighbouring Whitehawk on the site of the old housing office. The scheme is known as New Homes for Neighbourhoods and is intended to provide much-needed affordable housing. Council bosses hope that a new block of flats could help lead to the regeneration of one of Brighton’s ‘most notorious estates’.
Tumblr media
The Moulsecoomb scheme was in the form of a garden city with winding roads, large grass verges, and big gardens. It was intended to house veterans of the Great War; there were even tennis-courts provided in The Avenue. In South Moulsecoomb, the earliest buildings were effectively an adjunct to the existing housing opposite Preston barracks, but the later extensions of North and then East Moulsecoomb took the estate out into relatively remote countryside. The 478 houses were meant to provide new homes for people in the proposed slum clearance areas on Albion Hill, but the rents charged by the council were prohibitive for most of the intended residents, and tenants were brought in from other towns, especially London, following an advertising campaign. Little was therefore done to relieve the appalling conditions in central Brighton.
Tumblr media
The mainline rail track between Falmer and Moulsecoomb stations running adjacent to these dilapidated garages separates the Bates Estate from the Home Farm Business Centre, home to American military weapons manufacturer EDO MBM Technology Ltd/Harris. The UK firm makes the EDO MBM Zero Retention Force Arming Unit, an electro mechanical device used on military aircraft bomb racks to arm munitions as they are released from the aircraft. The headquarters has been the target of multiple instances of anti-war activism.

Anyone coming down Lewes Road from Falmer can’t miss Rory’s Hand Car Wash which backs on to Wild Park. Near the back of the park is what's known locally as the "ski slope" which rises to the Hollingbury Fort and gives views across the city. Wild Park will always be synonymous with the ‘Babes in the Wood’ murders in 1986 which remain unsolved.

The Stringers have the monopoly of funeral services in the Lewes Road area and have been a staple of the community from Moulsecoomb down to the Level for decades, if not centuries.

Primary Research: The Chocolate Maker and the Chocolate Witch
[my patreon]
Taste is a restaurant and chocolate cafe. It used to be an art studio, the building owned by the same people, and one that I can only sort of remember passing by. When Taste first went up, my sister and I wanted to stop in, but it appeared to be a "call first" sort of place and, until a sign was put out in the years following, it still looked that way. But, we knew about it and that prompted my initial email requesting an interview to help me better understand chocolate production for, Witching.
Liliana-Eneko Sloane is the matriarch of the Sloane family, property, and the Witch Matriarch for one of six of the main Witch families. She is also Berenice Sloane's (Witching's main protagonist) mom. She is a water witch who controls the water in a deep well beneath the Sloane property and channels her witching into her gardening, but mainly in her cacao plants, inconceivably growing in the high mountains of southeastern Idaho (in the fictional town of Leicester). So that I can understand the mechanics of what she does better, I wanted to develop my own knowledge in chocolate production.
~
I've been living in Provo my entire life, yet I forgot how the parking situation is on Center Street, how the traffic is. So, trapped in a spot directly in front of the new LDS temple and former LDS tabernacle, I checked my fail safe recording app after my interview with the Chocolate Maker. It had not saved. Caught between a wall of cars, pavement, and the smell of Belgium cut fries, I reran over what he and I talked about. Then, after getting back into traffic after a kind individual waved me on in  and a smelly trip back to my office, I sat down at my computer and attempted to recall what happened.
Taste is located on University Avenue, further from where I parked than I had estimated, but the walk was quick. Warmer outside than in my always chilly office, the sun was bright and the sky almost completely clear. I passed business people on their lunch and not a few people going to whatever convention was being held at the center of town. It is a one-story, red brick building, wide windows and a minimalist logo belied by the homey touches of the interior.
I was greeted by Taylor, who was the one to setup our meeting months after I extended my request. I thought I was reaching out to a chocolatier and one who guarded their secrets the way chefs and artists are thought to do often.
Rather than being greeted by hauteur or stiffness, Taylor was amiable and welcoming. Thick glasses framed her eyes and her tawny hair was brought up into a tight ponytail. She sat me down with a carafe of water and two glasses, a purple flower decorated the center of all the tables, then went to get her father Morgan. The Chocolate Maker
While waiting, I observed and was observed in turn by the other restaurant patrons: a family that made me think of German tourists, waited upon by a man I was unable to meet who was giving them a sample of Taste's chocolate tastings, the specialty. I smiled when my camera, on its blue and black flexible tripod, was stared at while I set it up, then Morgan arrived.
Taller than Taylor by a few inches and me by a few inches more, his hair was salt and pepper, though his brown apron complimented it and his beard in such a way I can only remember them as matching. We shook hands and I hit record on my camera. It failed. The battery gone, though it had not been in use and was with a full charge before. I will never unplug it again until right before another such outing. Instead, my phone ready and the best fail safe a writer can have--pen and paper--ready, we began.
"What got you interested in becoming a chocolatier?" I asked first.
He told me he wasn't a chocolatier, but a chocolate maker. This was even better. Liliana Eneko-Sloane isn't a chocolatier either, but a water witch who grows and processes her own chocolate to sell in the Thorned Page (chocolate cafe and speculative bookshop). Morgan took this idea in with grace. I didn't tell him the story's set in Idaho.
In a room connected to the restaurant by bricks and large windows, are a series of metal boxes, where the beans are processed and made into chocolate. Morgan told me how it was the machinery that romanced him into chocolate making, not just the love of the product. He used to do printing on paper and is an artist in other ways, and chocolate making is also an art.  After moving the art studio and buying the machinery, Taste began.
The love of chocolate came about the way it does with almost everyone: it was the smell. Most of chocolate's flavor is in the smell. Through over cooking, baking, roasting, so goes away the taste. Morgan told me how in the UK, he disembarked a bus with his mother and the sweet, earthy smell drew them into the streets and to a shop in England. This launched into how the Pump Street Bakery  bakes phenomenal bread and uses those ovens to roast their cocoa beans, and how those two products became built into each other (I have an untrained palate, but the bar I got tastes nice). This begins what makes a chocolate maker different than a chocolatier.
The chocolatier takes the finished product and goes from there to potentially make beautiful pieces that shine decadence, the kind you are loathed to take apart and consume. The chocolate maker's whole process is the art. From the growing, the selection, fermentation, chew, roast, grind, conching, taste and consumption is the purpose and thus, the art. There's a chocolate bar from Lithuania made with Hungarian paprika  (cheaper at Taste's online store than Amazon dot com, oddly) that looks more like tile work than treat and I was struck how it is almost profoundly sad to eat it, but can it be chocolate if it's not consumed? Is it art if it doesn't melt between your teeth?
A raw cocoa bean from Madagascar taste like strawberry liqueur in the chew stage, before it could be processed. Like wine, chocolate flavors vary depending on region, the type of cocoa plant, and how many times they were turned during fermentation. The types of chocolate that Taste serves at their bar--a literal bar with stools--are the ones I was excited to hear the most about. There are several ways to make hot chocolate, even "chocolate tea," as well as iced chocolate, and a sipping chocolate that is dark chocolate so thick, it's just melted. Later, I found the cream the sipping chocolate is made from is very high quality, but I am still allergic to it.
The machines in Taste are not usual to chocolate production. They are neither small or industrial sized, but are medium; just right for the location and ones that make sense for Liliana, too. It's just meant for their city, as is Taste (for now, as I can't presume to know their expansion plans), and for moderate production. For experimentation with flavors and additions, Morgan said a food processor is good for the "quick and dirty."
Quick and dirty experiments are judging what different additions do with the cocoa beans as the flavors develop together. For example, salt brings out sweetness and caramel explores depths. Herbs and fruit enhance similar notes, milk or cream adjusts the bitterness, also countered with sugar. Unlike salt, herbs, peppercorns, fruit, or other spices that are often added at the very end of processing, sugar is added at the grind stage. It means just what it sounds like.
Here's where the hard facts of chocolate making and cacao came into our conversation. I won't go too much into it, as it's all information that I can look up (have done and will again) as secondary research.
After grinding the chocolate, it gets conched. Conching is the surface scraper that also agitates to distribute the cocoa butter evenly through the dry chocolate, both in the cacao nibs. It helps with flavor development through friction. Morgan called it polishing the molecules.
Cacao nibs are the pretentious stuff you can buy to pretend to be healthy, but is also chocolate in its purest, most basic form. Taste uses them to make chocolate, but also their chocolate tea: hot water strained through cacao nibs with a regular tea strainer or a french press (ah, Utah). $10 per tin or I would've gotten it.
At the end of our interview, we talked somewhat of the benefits of growing the beans yourself, then processing them, as opposed to importing/exporting. In the long run, it's more cost-effective and likely more ethical. The details began to get lost as Morgan was careful to state that chocolate making is, after the basics of processing, an art; each maker has their own way of doing things. It's those kinds of vagueries that make me, a writer, feel good about the BS in which I so revel.

Attached here are the pictures I took that day and my interview script, and never-ever-fail notes that I took and later transcribed, and included what mattered to Witching.

2 Apr 2019: Big macs and big data. Logistics at China scale.
Note: while this newsletter opens with the weakest machine learning joke ever, it contains no First of April jokes.
Hello, this is the Co-op Digital newsletter - it looks at what's happening in the internet/digital world and how it's relevant to the Co-op, to retail businesses, and most importantly to people, communities and society. Thank you for reading - send ideas and feedback to @rod on Twitter. Please tell a friend about it!

Do you want frAIes with that?
McDonalds bought a company that dynamically personalises menus to suggest items that might be appropriate for the time of day, weather or traffic conditions, or what’s already in the basket. “How do you transition from mass marketing to mass personalization?” says the McD’s boss.
It’s being covered as McDs buys a “big data” or “AI company” but maybe that’s misleading: AI will eventually be everywhere, and will probably disappear into the background. A different approach to making software that solves a problem. Which is another way to say that taking data and machine learning seriously is a good idea.
Logistics at China scale
Scale: The world’s greatest delivery empire. An interesting long read about Meituan, a Chinese “online to offline” food delivery co. It’s a bit like Deliveroo-meets-Groupon but rather large: 600,000 delivery people making 20m deliveries daily to 400 million customers a year.
Related: Ocado’s evolution into a maker of automated warehouses has changed the online grocer’s outlook - if newsletter readers know of any other food retailers companies that have successfully reinvented themselves as tech firms, shout! And Walmart’s food delivery challenges (WSJ subscribers only).
Car ownership
Owning a car will soon be as quaint as owning a horse - an argument that cars are going to become services. You’ll pay for the journey rather than the vehicle. And a nit-picky counter-argument: How many times can Silicon Valley be wrong About cars?
This may be a useful way to think about it: “Micromobility [small, cheaper vehicles for small, quick journeys] is minimalist mobility and as such it implies sharing - ownership is complexity. Automobility is maximalist mobility and it implies ownership - sharing is the wrong signal.” The other thing is that these discussions are often about how transport works in densely-populated cities. About half the UK population lives elsewhere, so they’ll probably have a narrower set of options.
Airbnb panopticon
“Starting in early 2018, Airbnb added another layer of disclosure: If hosts indicate they have cameras anywhere on their property, guests receive a pop-up informing them where the cameras are located and where they are aimed. To book the property, the guests must click “agree,” indicating that they’re aware of the cameras and consent to being filmed.”
That’s from a piece about hidden (and overt) cameras in Airbnb rentals. Stories like this make you wonder if all that regulatory stuff that gets in the way of nimble competition is actually... quite useful at times. Also whether it’s a bit weird to rent a room in someone’s home for a night.
EU copyright vote
The EU voted [1] for a punchy copyright directive that will give sites like YouTube new responsibilities to stop users from uploading copyrighted content and let publishers charge platforms like Google News when they display snippets of news stories. It’s not clear whether it’ll achieve the desired result: you could argue that the big US tech firms are better positioned than smaller firms to achieve compliance. Though it might succeed in creating a new IP-compliant internet alongside the Chinese authoritarian and the US open ones. Some criticism.
[1] And some MEPs say they mistakenly voted for the wrong thing!
Health tech
Apple Watch is getting pretty good at detecting atrial fibrillation successfully. It’s not perfect yet, but is improving and is a step closer to non-invasive continuous health monitoring.
Alarming: critical flaw lets hackers control lifesaving devices implanted inside patients.
Death by a thousand clicks: where electronic health records went wrong - a struggle quite like the NHS’s? (over-complex requirement and regulation, poor design, poor implementation…)
Other news
Making digital a joint venture in Nova Scotia - Public Digital: “In government, a standard greeting from one official to another is “I’m the Grade x from the Department of y.” Rank and ministry are classic identifiers; they define where you belong internally. But [... the] public - your users - couldn’t care less.”
Starbucks has a $100m food/retail venture fund.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an in-depth market investigation into the funerals sector.
Are hotel booking sites still offering pay-for-placement, contra recent undertakings to the CMA?
Good news: Europe on track to halve emissions by 2030.
A survey of efforts to machine-generate songs and music and an AI with a record deal.

Offense is Defense | Hunting Cyber Threats

Offense is Defense | Hunting Cyber Threats
Security isn’t the only thing that’s become better with time. Cyber-attacks are now well-timed, smart, and stealthy. As they say, progress works both ways.
Cyber criminals are adept at building tools and utilizing techniques that mask their footsteps, making it difficult for traditional signature-based technologies to identify them. In fact, it’s common for an intrusion to go undetected from its date of origin for days, weeks, or even months.
What does this say? That passive monitoring or relying on traditional tactics to detect signs of malware is ineffective. But cyber threat experts are now switching gears, shifting to a proactive approach that involves hunting for potential network threats. And it’s a change we witness across several organizations today.
What Can You Call Threat Hunting?
On the level of a basic definition, threat hunting is the focused and iterative approach of tracing, analyzing, and identifying enemies within a network. It could stretch to tracing datasets and networks to identify persistent, advanced threats that evade regular security.
However, remember that the reason behind this definition is to shed light on the fact that cyber threat hunting is not a technology, and is instead driven by highly-trained security professionals familiar with accurate and consistent threat detection.
What Are the Tools of a Hunter?
1. Data and Information
Data from your network devices, firewalls, servers, databases, switches, and routers among other sources is important. Nevertheless, even with said data, it’s essential to process and aggregate the same into actionable information for future use.
2. Establishing a Healthy Baseline
A simple but effective method to better understand your network behavior is to baseline it over a period of time. A network traffic baseline, for example, could help you identify and confirm events that are unexpected or unauthorized.
3. Sharing Threat Intelligence
Cyber-attacks are becoming increasingly common in the business ecosystem, and these attacks are sources of intelligence also. Understanding the source of the attack, counter-measures implemented, and lessons learned could teach you how to react should a similar situation arise within your own organization.
A 2017 survey by SANS, a trusted source for information security training, certification, and research, cited that among organizations utilizing threat hunting tactics, about 60% witnessed measurable improvements in security. Going further, around 91% cited improvements both in terms of speed and response accuracy.
What Are the Challenges Impacting Cyber Threat Hunting?
While organizations are beginning to realize the importance of threat hunting practices, it is far from easy to implement. Security teams are often stretched thin, and it also takes a highly-trained expert to hunt. In fact, the cyber security workforce is expected to face a shortage by over 1.8 million by 2022.
But that figure does not have to be as grim as it sounds. Using people to counteract attacks is not a new concept; it’s been around for a while. Kevin Mitnick, a fugitive hacker turned internet security consultant, is a prime example. According to a KPMG research, of the UK companies surveyed, 53% would consider hiring former hackers or criminals to either train or assist with hunting and security.
Perhaps this is the future we ought to look forward to and adapt to. It’s time to detect incidents before they become breaches; it’s time to switch to the offensive. But then again, to either hunt or defend, that choice is yours alone.
