“Gone To The Wolves” by John Wray (2023)

I really, truly wanted to love this novel. Ilana Masad gave a glowing review for NPR (https://www.npr.org/2023/05/04/1173613977/john-wray-novel-gone-to-the-wolves-heavy-metal-book-review), which only heightened my interest and led me to purchase the e-book through Barnes & Noble.  
As a traumatized and misfit kid of the ‘80s who embraced heavy metal in ’85, then thrash in ’87, then speed in ’88, then crust and grindcore and death metal after my very first concert—the Milwaukee Metal Fest of ’89, then . . . just a couple of years later as the “Grunge Gold Rush” took off . . . all subgenera of what is now a vast spectrum of metal musicianship, I felt this story might resonate deeply within my grey matter of memories. Back then, metalheads were truly outcasts just about everywhere, the geeks and freaks and broken things that slithered into our own cloistered cliques who haunted the back of the cafeteria and found solace in empty parking lots far away from the football and basketball games, wanting to disappear and be left alone with our music and comic books and hollowed-out dreams. Finding kinship in any form was something akin to fate; the dark gods smiling on their chosen bastard children for some blissful moment. Tape-trading was the ONLY way to discover new music that wasn’t on garbage FM rock stations, until Columbia House started having a metal insert in their monthly mailings. There were the magazines, but we never read any of them. Nobody had the money to piss away, or the monomaniacal fascination to toss money at them. I didn’t even know about MTV’s Headbangers Ball until about ’90 and only then because my girlfriend was babysitting at a house who could afford cable. 
I remember that hallowed night in a cavernous building in the dead of winter watching some 30 bands blast us to shreds in Milwaukee, most of whom I had never heard of before then. We were kids amongst a horde of leather-clad giants handing us beers and drags from joints and pushing pills in our hands (“just say no!”). Nuclear Assault nuked the place. I remember being deafened by a wall of speakers as Judas Priest opened up with a long drum solo for their Painkiller tour in Chicago, while Rob Halford languidly rolled out on his Harley as another curtain opened to reveal a second wall of speakers. I remember climbing a plastic construction fence to get to the sound booth in the rafters as Rage Against the Machine whipped the crowd into a frenzied mob on the outskirts of Honolulu. They tore the place apart. I remember seeing Metallica in Bangkok in an open-air arena with what felt like a million others who spoke a different language. I remember seeing Type O Negative, Danzig, and Ronnie James Dio-fronted Black Sabbath play on Halloween 1994, and the hurried drive back for the graveyard shift with some kindred spirits with ears ringing and the afterglow lasting long past dawn. I remember seeing Project 86 at what seemed like a 1950s cocktail lounge in Chevy Chase, Maryland, as they thunderously evoked their Songs to Burn Your Bridges By, and as I prepared to go to Iraq to save hallowed democracy from the evils of Islam (and cash in on their oil fields). I remember seeing Slipknot at a filthy toilet-bowl bar in downtown Des Moines looking like lunatics who just escaped from the asylum and raided a cheap costume store (by this time I was wearing earplugs to concerts big and small). I remember seeing the almighty GWAR, alien overlords that they are, in Minneapolis, drenching the crowd in fountains of fake bile and blood and semen. I remember thousands of us screaming “God hates us all!” over and over at a Slayer show to the silent, impotent, starry and frigid firmament in Sacramento. I remember seeing Obituary on Leap Day 2020, as the world soon succumbed to the worst pandemic in a hundred years, and the millions of obituaries which followed in its wake. I remember, quite recently, Body Count turning their mosh pit into a furious meat grinder with energy I’ve not witnessed ever before, nor probably will ever again. The hate is real, America. It is so tangibly real. So many other venues, tours, and bands with less-permanent memories are held within my mind, for as long as that lasts. Metal music is infused within my apostate, heathen, godless life-blood. It will accompany me beyond, to whatever end awaits us all. Most likely boring, open-mawed Oblivion. 
The chord that rang out was familiar enough—an overdriven minor triad—but what stood [Kip’s] hair on end was how it felt. Distorted guitar had always had a certain temperature to him: it had always, no matter how vicious the music, been a sound he understood in terms of heat. Embedded with that warmth—hidden inside it—lived a cryptic form of life-affirming power. Deicide and Morbid Angel played their riffs to raise the dead, not to inter them. That was the nature of the exchange, the secret truth of the transaction, however bleak the songs might sound to virgin ears. Rage and violence and pain instead of nothingness (pp. 226-227, Nook). 
Wray captures this environment—this “subculture”—incredibly well, even if his chosen trio is nothing like anyone I ever knew, wedged as we were between the steel mills and iron works of East Chicago and Gary, Indiana, and the endless cornfields of everywhere beyond. Florida backwater it was not, but neither did anyone have the depth of knowledge in guitars, amplifiers, band members, and vocabulary like Leslie does at such a similar age. Doesn’t matter. I was the quiet, awkward, rage-filled wallflower . . . and metal music filled the void in my damaged soul. 
Masad has understandable issues with the lone female character, Kira, but at the same time the “beautiful but broken girl from a white-trash home” was a familiar trope from my high-school hellscape. No circus-freak father required. Normal blue-collar fathers were awful enough. My white-collar Vietnam Vet father was simply a haunted monster no bottle of bourbon could quell. Connie and Angie and Kim and Shannon and Crystal fit the bill all-too perfectly with Kira, if tragically. Masad may want to do some research on childhood trauma and its effects on developing brains. I have no idea if any of them are alive today, but I have no recollection of any of them speaking to the depth of personality that Kira does either. We didn’t grow up online though. We had, at best, five or six television stations to gawk at. Some regrets can never be resolved. Some mistakes never forgiven. 
Gone To The Wolves is theatrically broken into three parts for our wayward trio: the Florida Death Metal scene, the dying LA Glam and rising LA Thrash scene, then—oddly—the Norwegian Black Metal scene. It’s the Scooby-Doo third part that collapsed my nostalgic high, but I understand Wray’s supposed Dan-Brown desire to make a “thrilling finale”. For me, it falls flat by stepping way outside plausible reality (but I’m primarily a nonfiction reader so grant me some leeway if this is the norm these days). Too many people need endorphin bumps every two minutes or so thanks to tech addiction. I do not. I would have liked to see our troubled trio mature in the early 90s, like most of us did to one degree or another. Some died early of course, others weren’t true metalheads to begin with. We die-hards are devoted to the bitter end. 
While I can’t definitively identity with any character in this book, Wray opens to door to so many vibrant arteries of our subculture’s primordial existence that we can—at the very least—sympathize with them. We knew people who resembled them. The lost souls, the drug addicts, the lovelorn, the bipolar-depressive violent. I have to assume early heavy metal coming-of-age stories are rare. Nobody truly cared about us, and they still don’t. So maybe we can call this The Perks of Being a Wallflower meets Lords of Chaos? 
Nevertheless, completely enjoyable, to a fault.

It was 1977, and Hinda Miller, Lisa Lindahl and Polly Smith were doubled over with raucous laughter. They say their very clothing was in jeopardy.
“We were literally peeing in our pants we were laughing so hard,” chuckles Lindahl. The object of their amusement? Lindahl’s then-husband and his shenanigans with his jock strap.
“He put his jock strap on upside down across his chest, and put it on like a one cup bra,” Smith remembers as the others giggle in the background, “and all of a sudden we looked at him and thought, ‘Hmmm.’”

The three told CBS News Radio that they had spent the summer going to a plethora of stores trying on bras. They were looking for comfort in the midst of the jogging craze that struck the nation after the release of incredibly popular book, The Complete Book of Running. If one looks at ads for bras in 1977, one can see there isn’t a lot of construction that would keep a woman’s breasts from bouncing painfully while running. But the jock strap looked like it could work, especially after Lindahl took it from her husband, pulled it over her own head, and pulled the pouch down over her own breast so that it worked like the cup of a brassiere.
“It made sense to me because I said, ‘Oh, that’s something you climb into,’” Smith remembers, seeing through the eyes of the costume designer she was. “It will stretch, it eliminates all the hooks, and it is nice, soft elastic. So, after that, I was on board.”
Miller, who was also a costume designer, says the whole situation was really funny because they knew nothing about bras. “We had no limitations. We didn’t know you couldn’t sew jock straps together because in costume design, creativity is the highest value and you do things out of the box. And as everyone said, that was out of the box,” says Miller.

“It was a joke during a phone call with my sister, who said, ‘What do you wear when you’re running to make you comfortable and make your breasts not bounce uncomfortably?’” Lisa Lindahl recalls

The whole project got started because Lindahl and her sister, Victoria Woodrow, were among the many women who took up running (they called it jogging then) in the 1970s, and their brassieres were falling down on the job.
“It was a joke during a phone call with my sister, who said, ‘What do you wear when you’re running to make you comfortable and make your breasts not bounce uncomfortably?’” Lindahl recalls. “She said,’ Why isn’t there a jock strap for women? Ha Ha Ha!’ We both laughed . . . and it’s the same idea for a different part of the anatomy.”
Lindahl says she wasn’t a jock herself, nor was she athletic. But she started running to loose weight in an era where Charlie’s Angels was on television, and women wanted to look like the stars of the show.

“And I kept running because it became really my first spiritual practice. It made me feel good. It made me feel empowered, and I came up with the idea for the bra to solve my own personal problem,” Lindahl says. “And then I thought, If I want this, I bet other women do too.”
But first, they needed to come up with a prototype, and the fabric used to make jock straps was not quite right. The garment needed a firmer fabric and a much firmer elastic. So, Smith went to New York City, bought sample yardage, and made a prototype for Lindahl to try out. Lindahl went running, and Miller ran backwards in front of her, to see if the bra worked.

“I’m going, ‘Oh no that’s really going to inhibit my run,’” Lindahl says, laughing. But she says not only did it work, it felt great. “I thought, ‘This really makes a difference.’ . . . And Hinda said, “It looks like your breasts aren’t moving so much.’ And we knew we had a winner!”
Miller adds that the run taught them a lot. For one thing, she says, you can’t stop the breasts from moving. You can only minimize that. “What we figured out that everyone does now, is we pulled the breasts closer to the central line of gravity,” she says, referring to the plethora of products that followed their lead. “When the breasts go up and down without any support, the Cooper’s ligaments stretch, and that’s not good if you want to breastfeed your baby, or all of us are quite vain and we don’t want things to hang. So, we supported the breast by pulling the breast close to the chest wall.”

“We had no limitations. We didn’t know you couldn’t sew jock straps together because in costume design, creativity is the highest value and you do things out of the box. And as everyone said, that was out of the box,” says Hinda Miller.

Smith gave the prototype to Lindahl and went to New York City to mount an off-Broadway play. Miller went to South Carolina to teach costume design. Lindahl formed a corporation and issued shares to the three of them, then sent the garment to Miller. At that time, they were calling it the Jock Bra. Miller showed it to the owner of a small franchise called Phidippides, where the owner’s daughter ran a 5K and offered some suggestions for alterations. Miller hired an unemployed sewing supervisor named Carolyn Morris, who worked out the sizing for what all of the women felt was an athletic garment. But in South Carolina, women didn’t like being called jocks.
“So, I called Lisa, and she said, ‘Well what about Jogbra?’ and that’s how the name came about,” Miller says, adding that her father loaned then $5,000 to get everything started. “Carolyn made 60 dozen bras. I sent half to Lisa, half to myself, and we sold them in these small running stores . . . and that’s how we started our first sales history!”
But there was a lot to learn about the marketing process, even though the Jogbra was so popular they made a profit in their very first year. They say they don’t remember how much. By 1979, they went to their first sporting goods show in Chicago. They had a small booth, and a blow-up photo of a Playboy Bunny wearing the bra. It cost $4 to make, $8 wholesale and $16 retail. Lindahl remembers that there was a line of customers ready to buy it, and a line of sales representatives who wanted to work with them. At the time, she says, they didn’t even know what a ‘rep’ was.

“I came in from a run one day and my phone was ringing. I answered it and a man said, ‘Y’all looking for reps?’ I went, ‘What’s a rep?’” Lindahl laughs. “There’s this long pause and this lovely gentleman said, ‘Y’all new to the sporting goods industry?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’”
Lindahl says he spent an hour and a half on the phone with her, explaining how the industry worked, what a trade show was, and what they should and should not do. She hired him on the spot, and the company did so well they sold it 12 years later to Playtex Apparel. They won’t say for how much. Other sales followed, the brand got subsumed by Champion Sportswear and the rest is history.
The “Jogbra Inc. Collection,” including the prototypes, some sketches and early advertising and marketing materials, is held in the Archives Center of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, though it is not currently on display. The three women just did a panel discussion sponsored by the museum’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, and they have been inducted this year into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. They will also be featured in the museum’s upcoming exhibition “Picturing Women Inventors.”
But all these years later, with women everywhere sporting Jogbras, Polly Smith has to smile at the fact that she created the very first prototype.
“When I’m in the gym,” Smith says, “and these women are strutting around in it and I’m like, laughing to myself.”
The exhibition “Picturing Women Inventors,” sponsored by the Lemelson Center, is scheduled to go on view May 22, 2020 at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Currently, to support the effort to contain the spread of COVID-19, all Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C. and in New York City, as well as the National Zoo, are temporarily closed. Selecting the right venue space and location is one of the most important event planning decisions that is critical to the success of your event.  Once you identify the main purpose and type of event you are having, be sure to cover all important considerations when evaluating a venue during a site visit.  Do your homework by gathering the following essential information to avoid mishaps and unpleasant surprises.
Questions to Ask During an Event Venue Site Visit
1)  What is the maximum capacity and is it all available during my event? Any venue on your evaluation list is probably already screened for offering adequate capacity, just be sure that you are aware of any capacity restrictions during your show.  It’s always good  as part of your event planning, to confirm that you’ll have the site to yourself rather than sharing space with another party. If you’ll be sharing space, you need to know how your guests will enter and move about your space. If you are limited to using a shared entrance, this may hinder your ability to place signs and directions to your registration space.  Sharing space may also limit your ability for increased brand awareness.  Know the rules for printed signage and how attendees will be directed and move about during your show. Evaluating capacity also includes safety considerations.  Know the fire and safety plan for your space, if there is on-site security and the location of the closest hospital and emergency first responders. 2)  What is the available parking? While this also seems like an obvious consideration, some venues have different parking rules on different days. Is there a parking lot attached or nearby?  This is one of the best scenarios but not always available.  If there is a parking garage available, are there different daily rates on the weekend? Special rates for events? Are there adequate disabled parking spaces available?  Check out discounts available from Uber and Lyft for event transportation.  Most ride sharing services will work with you on a discount and you can even create a specific promo code for guests to use just for your event.  Convenient parking, transportation or door to door service is a big plus for your attendees.  3)  Is the venue expecting any changes or remodeling? If you contact a venue that you have experience with in the past, make sure that it is the same as you remember it.  Also ask if there are any plans for updating or remodeling the space.  This can be an easy question to forget about, although is extremely important as many venue sites are continually upgrading and improving amenities. If a venue has moved or changed the type of rigging points, for example, this can be a show stopping alteration if you are not made aware of this until the day of setup.  It’s even happened that venues updated their space without updating blueprints or CAD files. Asking when the last upgrade to your space was may draw out helpful information.  Be sure to confirm the type and location of rigging points and electrical outlets.   4)  What are the labor laws for your venue and location? Knowing the labor laws for your site location is a very important consideration, for a pleasant experience as well as budget constraints.  Some venues may require the use of union labor only with specific rules to follow. Regulations may include a mandatory double time rate during early or late hours or different rules for meal breaks. Make sure you know the labor laws ahead of time for proper budgeting without big surprises. 5)  What are all of the on-site amenities and labor services?
People mingle over food and beverages
Keeping your guests happy and satisfied is important to keep their attention.  People like to discuss your event and network with new contacts over good food and drinks. Some venues offer their own kitchen and catering staff or allow you to use your own, sometimes with an upcharge.  It is well worth it to evaluate the food options in advance to be sure you either select a venue with great food or have the option to bring in your own.
Deliver your message loud and clear

  Despite all the wonderful elements of our profession, there is one unfortunate aspect to exhibiting that can be hard to ignore: it can often be extremely wasteful. From shrink wrap to marketing collateral to packing material to obsolete booth components, we exhibitors are constantly discarding our excess. Add to that the fossil fuels burned when traveling to conventions or shipping our materials, and exhibition suddenly starts to look like one of the least “green” sectors of the business world.
When you’re looking to eliminate waste or reduce the carbon footprint of your exhibit, consider these practical tips.
BOOTH & SIGNAGE DESIGNBecause exhibitors often increase or reduce their floor space every few years, it can be tempting to do a complete booth redesign to accommodate the changes in your square footage. But scrapping your old booth every few years is expensive and often results in more material in the local landfill. Utilizing modular booth design can help you easily add or remove components from show to show, or from year to year.
When you are building a new booth, ask your provider what recycled or recyclable construction materials are available, and which materials can be used to reduce shipping weight or changing signage. SELL OR DONATE YOUR OLD BOOTHIf you’ve outgrown your exhibit materials, some manufacturers may offer you a trade-in credit on your old booth. If that’s not an option, try to find an interested buyer. Many used booths will fetch a resale price of 10-40% of their original purchase, depending on age and condition. Ask your colleagues or take out some ads on exhibit industry and association publications. Craigslist and eBay are also great alternatives for finding local buyers outside of your industry.

WEFTEC.17 Show Preview – WaterWorld
The 2017 Water Environment Federation Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC.17) – considered the largest annual water quality event in the world – will take place Sept. 30-Oct. 4, 2017 at McCormick Place in Chicago, Ill. This year is the event’s 90th in operation, and with a wide range of programming topics to cover and events to attend, there is something for everyone in the water business.
More than 33,000 attendees are expected at this year’s event, hailing from all corners of the water sector. Festivities will kick off with the Opening General Session on Monday, Oct. 2, at 8:30 a.m., in the Grand Ballroom. A new format for the event will bring in elements of the Great Water Cities Session to the traditional kickoff.
Featuring WEF Executive Director Eileen O’Neill and 2016-17 WEF President Rick Warner, the program will include a keynote address from STEM educator Fredi Lajvardi. Lajvardi was the head of the winning university underwater robotics team that upset the top-ranked MIT team in 2004, a story that is now the subject of a bestselling book and two films. He has used his story to bring people from all walks of life into STEM fields.

Also part of the opening ceremonies, a series of informal, engaging “WEFTalks” will be moderated by Tom Ferguson, vice president of programming for Imagine H2O. Participants represent different segments of the water profession.
