Nanbaka Ficlet: Dystopia (itching to do a nanbaka one so here)
Musashi liked to read.
Jyugo didn't really understand the urge to do things like other people did. And asking them to explain only led to confusion on their part, so he had given up asking in favor of just noting whichever meaningless pastime kept his cellmate of the moment sane.
In this German prison, it was Musashi. And Musashi liked to read.
He didn't like that Jyugo wandered off from his cell when the guard shift wasn't about - Jyugo sometimes wondered if that meant he liked walks or moving about, but never came to a conclusion on that - but the man also didn't like snitches, so he kept this fact from the guards.
Jyugo understood that people valued exchanges, so in return, he went to the library and grabbed a few books to bring back.
"You really shouldn't be doing that." The older teen sighed when he saw Jyugo's loot, "They'll notice something's missing."
"Why would they care, though? We're meant to be reading them, aren't we?" He'd thought that the books for the inmates.
Musashi looked at him with that strange look in his eyes, the same that everyone did when Jyugo said something strange. He didn't explain, but he also didn't ignore the question, "It's- it's complicated to explain how property works in here."
Jyugo didn't get why people thought he didn't understand how things worked 'in here'. He had been in prisons for as long as he could remember, and none of them functioned much differently from the others.
"Ah, I never got to finish this one!" Musashi held up on of the books from the pile, before continuing to rifle through them, "And look, this one's a dystopia! They were super popular for a minute."
"A... dystopia?" Jyugo asked, because Musashi seemed to be waiting for a response.
"Yeah." He agreed, elaborating further, "It's a genre of book. Where society has turned into a high-control environment and it's up to the people to put their lives on the line to overthrow their oppressors."
"Why?"
Musashi shrugged, "Reasons change depending on the book, and the premise behind the injustice can get goofy at times, but in the end it all boils down to freedom, I'd say."
Jyugo sank down to the ground, looking idly at the barred window, "Why's that so important? I don't get it."
"You'd understand if you read them. Or, well, one of the good dystopias, at least." Musashi settled on saying.
Jyugo's head leaned back, and the collar around his neck clanked against the wall before he could fully rest his head on it, "I don't get reading either. You're just looking at symbols and hallucinating."
Silence fell between them, and it was clear Jyugo had said something wrong again.
"... I can teach you to read, if you want." Musashi settled on saying.
Jyugo didn't really have any feelings on the matter. But Musashi seemed to want him to agree, and he didn't really have anything better to do, so he shrugged, "Sure."

i was gonna say that kinzo constantly picking up thirteen year olds every three years is weird given that a) his child was lost to him as a baby and b) that child would now be alive as an anonymous adult somewhere in the world but then i'm also thinking about the line "about the same age" in conjunction with the fact that shannon's actually been on rokkenjima for a decade which is, like, a very weird thing that we never figured out.

It's flawless, really something. It's Fearless.
Let us take a moment to talk about Fearless (stolen) as well as Taylor's Version- Taylor's very first re-record.
Something that makes me so excited about the releases of Taylor's Versions is the vocal progression. Taylor has always been talented, but listening to the growth in her voice from when the album first came out to when it was re-released was astounding.
Fearless is still very much country but shifted into more of a pop scene. We do not get the twang that debut had.
Major highlights about Fearless: You Belong With Me and Love Story. Both songs are ones that even people not invested in Taylor's discography can recognize anywhere. No one talks about the fact Love Story was written in what...20 minutes? I can't even write some of my best essays in a span of a week. The ability to compose a song that has so much gravity in such a short amount of time is absolutely mind-blowing. Not to mention, she accomplished this right in the beginning of her music journey.
The album itself just leaks and radiates nostalgia, and as Taylor has said, "are you ready to go back to high school with me?" ((For me, we are technically going back to middle school))
Here are my rankings of every song on Fearless (Taylor's Version) **NOTING: THERE IS NO BAD SONGS. I RANK ON HOW THEY RESONATE WITH ME. That is the beauty of music!**
1. The Way I Loved You 2. The Best Day 3. Don't You 4. Fearless 5. You're Not Sorry 6. Breathe 7. White Horse 8. Fifteen 9. Forever and Always 10. Love Story 11. You Belong With Me 12. The Other Side of The Door 13. Untouchable 14. Mr.Perfectly Fine 15. Jump Then Fall 16. Hey Stephen 17. Today Was a Fairytale 18. Come With Me in The Rain 19. You All Over Me 20. Tell Me Why 21. Change 22. Superstar 23. We Were Happy 24. That's When 25. Bye Bye Baby
*Does not include Forever & Always on piano- it falls within the same realm as the non-piano version*

Alright, I don't think anyone sane is up right now so I am going to vent as I clock out.
I don't want to go home for Christmas. I don't. Jesus Christ, I'm twenty fucking years old and I still can't tell my pops no when he tells me that I have to come home and that he and my ma have already bought me a flight back to Georgia. I should be able to say no, to be my own person, but I didn't say no. I can't say no.
They want me to work for the department like my brothers or to at least go into a friend of the family's security business. And I...don't. want. that.
My pops has been trying to be supportive of this whole percussionist and record shop thing but he doesn't get it and keeps asking when I'm going to get serious about life. I am serious about life. I'm serious about the things I like, the boat I keep, the friends I have, and the classes I'm taking. I'm serious about what's important to me and makes up my life.
But to them...
My parents were disappointed when I didn't turn out to have magic like theirs, and I just keep drifting further and further away from what their idea of what I should be is. I'm never going to be good enough for them. I'm never going to be as tall or as fast or as strong as my brothers. I've accepted that.

It's not until I was writing up my regenerations post that I realised that Thirteen really spent most of her life in prison. If I remember rightly, basically her whole life on TV more or less follows real time, except between The Timeless Children and Revolution of the Daleks when she spent a "few decades" in prison. At the very least that's like 85% of her life in prison, probably more. I know the EU can easily slip some more years of adventures into the Doctor's lives, but it'd still take a lot to change those stats. Damn.

So basically, I got a brainworm that wouldn't let me think about anything else until I started writing this fic, set post-canon, wherein word makes it to PPTH about a mysterious healer diagnosing strangers with a single look... What I've posted so far is basically like the fic equivalent of a pilot episode. Leave a kudos or a comment so I can convince the producers (my brain) to sign me for a season (finish the fic).

house in 2024
House installs 24/7 tracking apps on Wilson's phone. In return, Wilson books Ubers to take his phone and drive to various nefarious locations, sit there for half an hour, then come back home
Similarly, Wilson gets a smartwatch that monitors his heart rate. House gets updates sent to his phone and calls Wilson whenever his heart rate increases by more than 20 bpm to try and interrupt him jerking off
Kutner writes fanfic and replies to almost every comment he gets. His author's notes are full of things like "sorry this chapter is late, I accidentally gave myself a concussion trying to save a patient's life"
House posts on the Am I The Asshole subreddit but gets annoyed at everything thinking he's the asshole so he immediately deletes his account and pretends it never existed
Cuddy spends an hour of her day responding to the hospital's negative google reviews about "that rude doctor with the cane"
A young patient of Wilson's convinces him to be in a TikTok they're making, and he doesn't really know what that is but he agrees and ends up going semi-viral
Chase is secretly seething with jealousy over Wilson's accidental TikTok success, because Chase has been making thirst-trap videos in his scrubs for months with barely any views (it's because he's trying way too hard)
Thirteen gets really into Drag Race/the local drag scene and accidentally introduces House to gay slang, which he instantly adopts

Day One Hundred Thirteen
I had a lot of meetings today. Only one of them- the usual Thursday morning PLC meeting- was expected.
That one wasn't a particularly eventful meeting either; I just had a handful of things to go over with the department, and some of the guys had questions about course selection and the program of studies, and then we should have gone to do our curriculum work, but we spent an additional ten minutes or so joking about which one of us should apply to be the next superintendent (the current one is retiring at the end of this year), and what our leadership would mean for the district. While that was going on, The Principal asked to see me to follow-up on a conversation we'd had about leveling and differentiation, so we agreed to meet at 8:15.
When did I actually get to the meeting? 8:19.
Tumblr media
I got sucked into answering emails and lost track of the time, then bolted out of my classroom when I realized it. Luckily, The Principal wasn't bothered; he and Dean 1 were still wrapping up a separate discussion anyhow. Once they were done, I stepped into the office, and we had a really productive meeting about our original topic as well as some other things involving my department. As we were wrapping up, he asked how I'm doing and how my teaching year's been going. I told him I'm fine- always am- but I appreciated the check-in.
When I returned to my classroom, I had a message from Mr. N asking if we could meet to discuss some future English and social studies interdisciplinary work, but by that time the block was almost over, so we ended up having a lunch meeting instead. We're going to apply for money to do summer work, but we also want to get the ball rolling during upcoming teacher workshop days, if possible. It's kind of fun that we've gone from being mentor and mentee to both being department heads, and getting to make these kinds of plans together.
And in between all these meetings, I taught my classes!
In APGOV, students smashed a vocab quiz, then some MCQ practice, and we wrapped up my multi-day lesson on the presidency and vice presidency by discussing relevant constitutional amendments (12th, 20th, 22nd, 25th). What's next? All about the bureaucracy; I teased this by asking them to hypothetically order a pizza (they told me all the toppings they wanted) and then guess how many federal agencies were involved in regulating that pizza (something like a dozen). That was amusing.
In Global Studies, students continued reading their books, and then I had them get into groups to share what they're reading, what interesting plot points they've gotten to so far, and what they learned from the background research they did last class. After that, we had a whole class discussion; I asked them to tell. me what their classmates had shared with them, what they'd shared themselves, or both. That went WAY better than I thought it was going to go. Like, I figured it would be decent, but it was actually really cool and some students who don't typically participate in class discussions put their hands up for this one. Hooray for that!
After school, I proctored the citizenship test for any seniors still needing to pass it. Every social studies teacher gives the test monthly during the school day, but it's good to give other opportunities, too, because some students are taking their social studies courses online, or they're not in one of our courses till next quarter, or they've failed previous attempts. It took longer than I'd thought it would because one of the test-takers was a former student, and we got to talking as I graded her test, so I missed track practice. I'd told The Head Coach that was a possibility, though.
The team will be at New England's on Saturday. One last meet for this indoor season!
