I've been thinking about Caroline Polachek's Desire I Want to Turn Into You (DIWTTIY) a LOT, I can tell because Kits has started calling her "Caro Polo" in a funny singsong voice that implies we're talking about the -thing- again. I will try to write all the loosely assembled thoughts down a in a continue reading jump. Maybe. I dunno.
Erstwhile indie darling, goose screamer, k*yne scooper and acclaimed quirked-up vocalist Caro Polo has stopped explaining, intellectualising, labeling, making sense! I'm sure there's theory or a name for this idea or reoccurring expression(ism) ;) because of course there's always a framework, context and philosophy that one must know of and employ effectively to place their work in the culture - but good pop music doesn't make sense, or have a basis in theory, and it will not explain itself!
I think PONY by Ginuwine is the most clear example, to mind, like you get it... you get what he's on about, the vibe could not be more legible, tbh, but the song lyrics themselves are not in clear support of the thesis, nor is the odd farting bass, but nonetheless you vibe!
It’s giving C'mon stop trying to hit me and hit me. Morpheus in the Matrix, who was of course shitting on the mother toilet when he said that.
I dunno for sure, really the intentionality of it or her work generally, and it is beside the point — to be encoded or decoded merely makes it a signal, not a sign, not a message, not a meaning. Is this all in there or are you projecting? It doesn't matter so much, as it is a successful attempt at unfocussing that third mythic eye*, feeling that intangible gestalt enough that she's tuning into the desperate leitmotifs of the current moment and amplifying/refracting them through this soaring album.

The Beginning of iShowSpeed: A Passion for Gaming and Content Creation

Introduction to iShowSpeed
iShowSpeed is a content creation and gaming company that was founded in early 2017. The company is based out of Los Angeles, California and is composed of four members: CEO and founder Andrew "iShow" Meservey, COO and head of business operations Michael "Mitch" Coe, lead editor and content creator Taylor "Tay" Nguyen, and creative director Nick "Noodle" Dominguez. iShowSpeed's goal is to create the best possible gaming and entertainment content for their viewers while also providing a behind-the-scenes look at the industry for those who are interested.
The company started off as a YouTube channel thatAndrew had created in order to share his love of video games with others. He had been making videos for years prior to the creation of iShowSpeed, but it was not until he met Michael that the channel began to take off. WithMichael's help, they were able to grow the channel from a small hobby into a successful business. In addition to running the YouTube channel, iShowSpeed also produces live streams, podcasts, and other types of gaming content.
The company has come a long way since its humble beginnings, but Andrew and his team continue to work hard to create the best possible content for their viewers. Inspiration for Starting the Channel
I have been playing video games for as long as I can remember. I grew up with a Nintendo 64 and spent countless hours playing games like Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and GoldenEye 007. I was always drawn to the creative aspects of gaming, and I loved coming up with new ideas for levels or puzzles.
When I was in high school, I started experimenting with video editing and creating my own gaming videos. I loved the process of taking raw footage and piecing it together into something entertaining. I also loved the challenge of trying to make my videos better each time.
Eventually, I started posting my videos online and developed a small following. This encouraged me to keep going, and I began to invest more time and effort into my channel. iShowSpeed is the result of that hard work, and it's been an incredible journey so far.
Challenges Faced Along the Way
It hasn't been all fun and games for iShowSpeed. Along the way, we've faced a number of challenges that have tested our resolve. But we've always come out stronger on the other side.
One of the biggest challenges has been financial. Gaming and content creation are expensive hobbies. We've had to be creative in how we fund our projects. Sometimes that means seeking out sponsorships and other times it means cutting corners in other areas of our lives.
Another challenge has been time management. Balancing work, school, and our passion can be difficult. There have been many late nights and early mornings spent working on videos and streams. It's not always easy, but it's worth it when we see the positive impact our content has on our viewers.
Lastly, we've also dealt with some negativity along the way. There's a lot of hate in the world and some people have directed it towards us simply because we're doing what we love. It can be tough to ignore, but at the end of the day, we know that what matters most is putting out quality content and staying true to ourselves.
Tips and Strategies for Building an Audience
The first step is creating quality content that appeals to your target audience. This can be achieved by thinking about what sort of gaming or content related topics would be interesting or useful to them. Once you have a good idea of the type of content you want to create, the next step is promoting it through social media and other online channels.
One great way to get started is by leveraging the existing audiences of other popular gamers or content creators. For example, if you're starting a new gaming channel on YouTube, make sure to promote it on other popular gaming forums or websites. “You know she’s going to kill us, right? First me for helping you escape then you when she’s done with me” Maggie said, pacing the living room of her apartment as you took over her coffee table, papers already scattered on it since you were looking over everything you had on the project you were helping Vikander with “You act like I don’t know this… Besides, you knew this would happen” you pointed out, knowing she had to know she’d face the wrath of whoever found you missing “I know, I had just hoped it wouldn’t of been Lena” Maggie sighed, rubbing her face some before slumping on the couch beside you “What do you need from me?” She asked, wanting to help however she could “Do you know how to trace someone?”
A few moments later, Maggie had her laptop open and on her lap while you looked through the results of the testing “Who am I tracing?” She asked, glancing at you as your brows furrowed and you picked up the paper “Uhhh, Dominguez… Shit what’s his first name… Pedro! Pedro Dominguez” you said, looking at her and watching as she typed away at her laptop “Okay, it’ll take a bit for me to be able to pinpoint them, but it’s searching” she said, setting the laptop to the side and looking over your shoulder at the paper in your hands “What’s that?” She asked, raising an eyebrow “Results from one of the tests they did… When the hell did they get a sample of my hair?” You asked, seeing the results were from your hair follicle “Maybe they picked it off one of your jackets?” “Maybe” you said, the two of you freezing when you heard a knock on the door “Maggie?” Nia called, causing the two of you to release a sigh of relief.
“You guys got out alright?” Maggie asked, quickly ushering Nia and Brainy into her apartment before shutting the door and locking it “Yeah, but you should know… Someone called the police” Nia said, looking at you with a worried look “Lena” both you and Maggie said, knowing she was the only one that could’ve called the cops that quickly “She’s going to kill us” Nia said, sighing some and knowing that if Lena found out they were involved in this then they were dead “She won’t find out… Brainy, come here” you said, handing him the paper when he got close enough “Interesting” he said, kneeling down beside you so he could scour over the papers with you.
After a few hours, you and Brainy finally looked up from the papers, you seeing Nia passed out on the couch, Maggie having escaped to her room about an hour or so before “Shit, it’s late and you and Nia have class in the morning” you whispered, looking at Brainy who nodded and stood up, stretching as he did before going to wake up Nia who blinked sleepily before slowly standing up and following Brainy out, you shutting and locking the door behind them and sighing as you leaned back against the door, feeling like you were dizzy and assuming it was just because you hadn’t eaten much, but opting to instead try to get some sleep.
A few days later, you were getting ready to head out for campus, pulling on a hoodie so that you wouldn’t be as noticeable if you passed people you knew and shoving the sleeve of your hoodie into the pocket since you couldn’t just have it dangling “I’m heading out to the campus! I shouldn’t be too long!” You called to Maggie, her getting ready for her shift at the diner and you slipping out the door, making your way to the campus.
When you got there, you saw not many people around “Right, it’s a weekend… Which means I have to be careful at the science building since Alex would be there working on her own project in one of the classrooms, quietly making your way to the downstairs lab, throwing yourself into a classroom when you heard a door open and freezing when you saw Lara there “Y/N? What are you doing here? Everyone is looking for you!” Lara said, taking her glasses off and rushing over to you as you shushed her “I needed to escape, I have to find out what Vikander is planning” you said, looking at her before peaking out of the door to make sure the person had left “What?” Lara asked, seeming confused “I’ve been working on something with Vikander and some others, I need to know what’s happening, they caused all of this!” You said, looking at her and seeing her think for a moment “I’ll come with you” she said, grabbing her things and knowing you’d need help “I’m coming” she said when you looked like you were about to object “Fine” you sighed, making sure the coast was clear before you headed out, Lara trailing behind you.
At the lab, you opened it quietly and ushered Lara in before shutting the door and turning the lights on “There has to be something here, anything” you told her, pulling your hood off and her giving you a worried expression when she saw just how pale you looked “Are you sure you should be up and around right now?” She asked, going over to you and placing the back of her hand against your forehead, feeling how hot you were “Stop, I need to do this” you said, swatting her hand away before making your way over to the cage that held the creature but was now empty “They must’ve done something with it” you whispered, coughing into you elbow before going to grab some tools “Are you going to help me or not?” You asked when you noticed Lara just standing there, that having seemed to pull her out of her head and get her feet moving to help you.
After about an hour, you had gathered as much data as possible and were zipping up your bag when you heard footsteps and voices “Shit” you muttered, throwing your bag over your shoulder and ducking down behind a counter with Lara just as the door opened “Why are the lights on?” You heard Dominguez ask, looking around “It must’ve been Vikander” Mr. Smith said, placing what sounded like heavy bags on the ground before shutting the door “Careful with those bags, in there is something valuable” Dominguez reprimanded, looking at Mr. Smith and hearing footsteps coming closer to your hiding spot “When Vikander gets here, we’ll start a whole new world” he said, you furrowing your brows when you heard that and seeing Lara’s facial expression change for just a moment before going to neutral, hearing her phone begin to vibrate in her pocket and you reaching into her pocket to shut it off for her when you saw Dominguez name on the caller i.d., quickly hanging it up before they heard it as well and locking eyes with Lara, who averted her gaze when she saw the hurt on your face.
Once Dominguez and Mr. Smith were gone, you stormed out of the room with Lara chasing behind you “Y/N please, let me explain!” She shouted, grabbing your arm and forcing you to look at her “What? That you’ve been living a double life and LYING to me this entire time?” You asked, pulling your arm out of her grasp and storming away, well trying to when another dizzy spell hit you, causing you to stop to regain your balance “No, I mean yes… I mean!” Lara said, seeming like she couldn’t form a straight sentence “Don’t ever talk to me again and if you tell Dominguez about any of this-“ you said, stopping yourself before you could say anything else “I have to go” you said softly before heading off “Your dad is in danger! Just like you!” She called, causing you to freeze and turn to look at her “My dad?”.

Climate change fueled the rise and demise of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, superpower of the ancient world

Ancient Mesopotamia, the fabled land between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers, was the command and control center of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. This ancient superpower was the largest empire of its time, lasting from 912 BC to 609 BC in what is now modern Iraq and Syria. At its height, the Assyrian state stretched from the Mediterranean and Egypt in the west to the Persian Gulf and western Iran in the east.
Then, in an astonishing reversal of fortune, the Neo-Assyrian Empire plummeted from its zenith (circa 650 BC) to complete political collapse within the span of just a few decades. What happened?
Numerous theories attempt to explain the Assyrian collapse. Most researchers attribute it to imperial overexpansion, civil wars, political unrest and Assyrian military defeat by a coalition of Babylonian and Median forces in 612 BC. But exactly how these two small armies were able to annihilate what was then the most powerful military force in the world has mystified historians and archaeologists for more than a hundred years.
Our new research published in the journal Science Advances sheds light on these mysteries. We show that climate change was the proverbial double-edged sword that first contributed to the meteoric rise of the Neo-Assyrian Empire and then to its precipitous collapse.

Booming right up to an unexpected bust
The Neo-Assyrian state was an economic powerhouse. Its formidable war machine boasted a large standing army with cavalry, chariots and iron weaponry. For over two centuries, the mighty Assyrians waged relentless military campaigns with ruthless efficiency. They conquered, plundered and subjugated major regional powers across the Near and Middle East, as each Assyrian king tried to outshine his predecessor.
Ashurbanipal, the last great king of Assyria, ruled this vast empire from the ancient city of Nineveh, the ruins of which lie across the Tigris River from modern Mosul, Iraq. Nineveh was a sprawling metropolis of unprecedented size and grandeur filled with temples and palace complexes, with exotic gardens that were watered by an extensive system of canals and aqueducts.
And then it all ended within just a few years. Why?
Our research group wanted to investigate climate conditions over the few centuries when the Neo-Assyrian Empire took hold and then eventually collapsed.
Building a picture of climate 2,600 years ago
For clues about rainfall patterns over northern Mesopotamia, we turned to Kuna Ba cave, located near Nineveh.
Our colleagues collected samples from the cave’s stalagmites. These are the cone-like structures that point upward from the cave floor. They grow slowly, from the ground up, as rainwater drips down from the cave ceiling, depositing dissolved minerals.

The rainwater naturally contains heavy and light isotopes of oxygen – that is, atoms of oxygen that have different numbers of neutrons. Subtle variations in the oxygen isotope ratios can be sensitive indicators of climatic conditions at the time the rainwater originally fell. As stalagmites grow, they lock into their structure the oxygen isotope ratios of the percolating rainwater that seeps into the cave.
We painstakingly pieced together the climatic history of northern Mesopotamia by carefully drilling into stalagmites, across their growth rings, which are similar to those of trees. In each sample, we measured the oxygen isotope ratios to build a timeline of how conditions changed. That told us the order of events but didn’t tell us the amount of time that elapsed between them.
Luckily, the stalagmites also trap uranium, an element that’s ever-present in trace amounts in the infiltrating water. Over time, uranium decays into thorium at a predictable pace. So the dating experts on our research team made scores of high-precision uranium-thorium measurements on stalagmite growth layers.
Together these two kinds of measurements let us anchor our climate record to precise calendar years.
Unusual wet period, then massive drought
Now a direct comparison of the stalagmite climate record with the historical and archaeological records from the region was possible. We wanted to place the key events of Neo-Assyrian history into the long-term context of our climate reconstruction.
We found that the most significant expansion phase of the Neo-Assyrian state occurred during a two-centuries-long interval of anomalously wet climate, as compared with the previous 4,000 years. Called a megapluvial period, this time of unusually high rainfall was immediately followed by megadroughts during the early-to-mid-seventh century BC. These ancient dry conditions were as severe as recent droughts in Iraq and Syria but lasted for decades. The period marking the collapse of the Neo-Assyrian Empire occurred well within this time frame.

Mindful of the caveat that correlation doesn’t imply causation, we were interested in how this wild climate swing – an unusually rainy period that ended in drought – could have influenced an empire.
While the Neo-Assyrian state was huge in its final few decades, its economic core was always confined to a rather small region. This relatively small area in northern Mesopotamia served as a primary source of agricultural revenues and powered Assyrian military campaigns.
We argue that nearly two centuries of unusually wet conditions in this otherwise semi-arid region allowed for agriculture to flourish and energized the Assyrian economy. The climate acted as a catalyst for the creation of a dense network of urban and rural settlements in the unsettled zones that previously hadn’t been able to support farming.
Our data show the wet period abruptly ended and the pendulum swung the other way. In the grips of recurring megadroughts, the Assyrian core and its hinterlands would have been engulfed within a “zone of uncertainty” – a corridor of land where the rainfall is highly erratic and any rain-fed agriculture comes with a large risk of crop failure.
Repeated crop failures likely exacerbated the political unrest in Assyria, crippled its economy and empowered the adjacent rival states.
Uncertain climate, unsustainable growth
Our findings have current-day implications.
In modern times, the same region that once constituted the Assyrian core has been repeatedly struck by multiyear droughts. The catastrophic drought of 2007–2008 in northern Iraq and Syria, the most severe in the past 50 years, led to cereal crop failures across the region.
Droughts like this one offer a glimpse of what Assyrians endured during the mid-seventh century BC. And the collapse of the Neo-Assyrian Empire offers a warning to today’s societies.
Climate change is here to stay. In the 21st century, people have what Neo-Assyrians did not: the benefit of hindsight and plenty of observational data. Unsustainable growth in politically volatile and water-stressed regions is a time-tested recipe for disaster.

These masks are wonderful for sick people looking to keep their bodily fluids off of others, but if you’re healthy, the best way to stay that way is to get vaccinated for known infections and to wash your hands (often!) -- NOT to wear one of these masks. If you want me to do more videos like this with practical “experiments” let me know, I LOVE doing stuff like this, but it takes extra effort for sure. ✨ It goes without saying, people who choose to wear masks (whether here, or in Wuhan, China) can choose to do so freely. The speculative friction required to stop those passing through would require planned extinction; would require war against generations of persistence across biome, suffering & misery magnified it remains threatened always. Building requires digging. Digging creates hollows to be filled. A move past botanicals—it doesn’t exist. A pulse in the web. Walk toward beyond the view: journey’s luck to close in on production. Pace picks up, dusk’s dis- appearing light invites one in: welcome. Prelude Tonight the act of naming fell through the floor. We speak permeable solids inflected by light. Skull’s grid moves units indistinctly: windshield & palette cross paths, hatch an Ovidian shift, difixiones to devotio; the faux-gorithm teases pantheon from closet, traces flotilla’s down, hot air balloons, celebrating you or prairie fair. You’ll learn to kill that hunger for thunderhead drift. I follow shapes of your speech, attend to your syntax, taste your configuration; to keep up I sketch stick figure, code hypertext script cascading in style, the result of which confirms, again: we’re lost. Plot is a plait’d plat, flatland destination & another assemblage? I want aura to invite aural meiosis, aurora splitting into rural roads, for the bassoon quartet to be forgiven for plastic bag reeds on my direction, for aria to, moody, move into a different mode & travel out through spring’s open window; I want the racket splenetic melancholy, for dynamic accompaniment fit for unfashionable passion, the like. Frame Matisse with me, guilty stokes both— say the magnolia blooms shall remain & not at the expense of any other but they do not.
