🥺🛒✅ for the writing asks :3 tq!! — @milkstore
🥺 is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?
the first thing that comes to mind as a response is characters bantering together, but that’s more of a natural direction the characters take rather than something which specifically puts me in the ‘feels’. i think characters being tender or vulnerable for each other is what’s going to get me, if anything. platonic, romantic, familial, whatever. whether it’s a big confession or little off-handed lines and actions which show the depth of one person’s appreciation of another doesn’t matter. it’s the essence of the imparting of knowledge between two people how much somebody means to them which i find so heartwarming—especially if it’s coming from a strained relationship or somebody who struggles to express themselves making the effort to show that, despite differences, they have as deep a love for a certain person as somebody more expressive. this answer is kind of vague and i can’t really point to any specific interactions which reflect what i have in mind, but i hope it’s comprehensible?
🛒 what are some common things you incorporate in your fics? themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.
well, as mentioned above, banter and joking shows up in the better part of my writing just because it’s really fun to write and i also think it can subtly reflect characters’ closeness? e.g. if you genuinely don’t like someone, you won’t entertain and shoot back a quip; you’ll just try to get out of there as soon as possible. but if you have two characters who are at odds on the surface but they jab at each other playfully, that means they enjoy being around the other and getting reactions from them. see benedick and beatrice from much ado about nothing, or even elizabeth & darcy to some extent from pride & prejudice. that verbal sparring is also something i’m trying to achieve with yiju and jing yuan’s dynamic. with regards to themes… most of my shorter oneshots, which make up most of my masterlist, don’t really revolve around themes as much as they do situations, but recently (as is probably noticeable) i’ve found longer stories with more of a plot tickling my writing taste buds recently; and that extended length gives time and space to incorporate themes. having said that, i’m not sure whether there are any themes in particular i gravitate towards, but i do quite like subversions of expectations; e.g. not-fated soulmate aus and what that means for the people involved, a quiet character having to take the lead in conversations (see xiaophros), what does beauty mean to somebody who’s blind, etc. i don’t think there’s any particular imagery i use, either; i usually tailor imagery to the specific character/ situation, i guess?
✅ what’s something that appears in your fics over and over and over again, even if you don't mean to?
going to say it again: banter. verbal sparring. sarcasm. jokes. it is my lifeblood. perhaps to a concerning extent. banter always finds some way to wiggle itself into what i’m writing. also, i love writing aus (as you can probably tell as well). there are few things more satisfying that picking up on shared threads between pieces of fiction/characters you adore and running with them or squishing them together and seeing what happens.
#sent: milkstore#r answers#thank you for the ask!#the answers were quite long but i hope they were relatively interesting

Aroace speaking, it's possible for someone asexual to be interested in romantic relationships and vice versa, even disregarding the whole spectrum aspect. I'm a bit more bothered by how you have only minor characters asexual because you enjoy shipping-- though some of us don't care about relationships, none do, and it's possible to include more prominent ace representation while still having your shipping fun. Being a-spec is about attraction, not behavior, and just a nod to that would be nice.
I appreciate that you’re respectful while also explaining your concerns.
I can’t promise more Ace-rep immediately in AFAC because not very many new characters will appear and the ghost kids are kids so even if i made some of them Ace and/or Aro, it would probably never come up because they’re kids. Some of them still think cooties are a thing.
That said, I promise I’m listening and I will take these lessons with me into any future projects I make.

16 Years Of Kunal Karan Kapoor. (Fan -messages)
Thank you kunal karan kapoor,You'd entered my life as an actor but now you are not an actor for me but a family member, friend, well-wisher, true love, inspiration and my idol 🤩 I know these words are less to describe you... You might be suprise how you became these all... I can explain! A family member, How? Aren't you excited for every success of your family member.. Don't you always want to support and be there for him with or without anyone.. Don't you feel happy for the relationship desicions, birthdays etc of your family member.. Yes right then you are a part of my family too... Friend.. How? Like I talk to my friend, like I tag my friend, like I celebrate my friend's birthday, like I have all the concern on him and his future I have on you too... Then what about well wisher..? You don't know me right.. Then how can you became well wisher of mine? Basically you wish good for all your fans... Hence you are my well wisher... But speaking in depth a well wisher always motives us in every part of life.. And you do that by your character mohan.. When I feel too low and feel why me always I'm good but I don't get good... I see mohan saying to megha just because you are good not all others are good too... After he rescued her from their boss... That motivates me that time... Nextly whenever I have suicidal thoughts.. Yeah I have some... I see mohan motivating megha of the sunrise after the dark night... I feel you are saying to me not to quit... And at times when I cry I see the scene where you suddenly pop from the door and ask megha not to cry and you console her by your actions.. Yeah I immediately stop crying when I see that... See you have your magic in all of my life... So now you are my well wisher right? Then true love... It doesn't only mean life partner... But it is the people whom we love without any need and intention... It is pure... I have no exact reason to love you hence you are my true love... And would also wish a person with more similarities. Next you are my inspiration by the life you live which all other fail.. Following your heart and doing your passion.. This may look simple but that is practically not simple as that... And needs so much of guts to take a desicions of this sort... We can be happy if we follow our heart everyone knows... But we need someone to do that set an example and lead in that way.. So you always inspire me in that sort... Every time I see your travel pictures I think see how independent he is... Must live a life like this fulfilling our dreams... So you directly or indirectly shape my whole life... ❤ And finally idol... Do I need to explain this further... The whole message is the reason why I look up you as an idol... And I wish that you must be born either as my father, brother, best friend, my life partner or maybe my son 😂 why as an actor that too that far... So that I can't see you are make you my own... You are an public figure...But I want you as my private person 😂 maybe in next birth ( you decide the relationship between us.. I'm ok with anything) so finally thank you KKK... Be proud of you always... Getting rich fame or anything else is easy... But getting someone who considers you as a family is something spl you have that... ❤ Be always proud of yourself because you have done something wonderful by spreading positivity and changing someone's life in a positive way... Good luck, good health and happiness to you always..With love your fan. - Janani Praseena
Firstly I started to watch nenjam pesudhey for Ashnoor because her cuteness in Jhansi rani….slowly I become fan of your bond with Ashnoor your slang your hair, nose everything…sometime I really wish to pull your nose once in my lifetime …and the highlight of your acting is, you just not acted ,you lived the character…the day is incomplete without talking about you every day. We use to talk about you serial episodes in our lunchtime, not even care about our board exams 😁….whenever you wink your eyes it makes me blush 🙈💘…still some of my friends have saved my contact number as dhevayanimohan that’s how much I love you and make everyone ears filled with blood 😁… my relation said she would definitely marry a Hindi boy…you made a powerful impact.. I started to cry when the serial is over. Then my mom bought a phone. In that I download lot and lots of pictures videos of your…once she opens her phone it only filled with your photos..i wish my partner would be same like you, sharp nose, joined eyebrows, curly hair expressive eyes. If I was born as a boy, I would also put a tattoo like your tattoo. Recently I seen some of your left right left episodes, in that I loved your lady getup 😂😂😂 You perfectly do your responsibility what the director wants…cuteness overloaded in some of your previous work like Varun's character …Every time everywhere proposing scene came you nailed it very well. It makes an impact in my heart… like you just proposed me😍😍…You are my first love you taught me to blush ….Thank you for everything and entertaining us and also you gave some new feelings 😍 - Dhevayani

I was merely a kid when I watched you for the first time on my screen as Mohan and on that day I realized that it's possible to feel attached to fictional characters if the actors potraying them is as brilliant as you are. After that, I watched your other works as well and each time I was enthralled by your performance. You just nailed all the characters you played. You are one of the most exceptionally talented actors. Thanks a lot for entertaining us for 16 years and giving us so many memorable characters to cherish. Also, I must say you kind of ingrained the love for travelling in me through your breathtaking travel clicks. You are the reason I started experimenting with my camera to capture moments around me. Thanks for always being so inspiring. Thank you for being YOU. - Kunalistan

Every new day, you bring reasons to see better perspective for life. Your interviews inspire me that how important it is to be grounded, to appreciate people around us who put immense hardwork for our success as well. The best thing I learned from you is not to take success in our heads. The way you stay calm when Strom passes in and stay calm when the dawn of happiness shine. Your mysterious nature too encourages me to work hard in life…your liveliness motivates to be a dreamer in true sense, your words have the power to make us realize the importance of smallest tiny things to larger one and its impact. Your 'being grateful’ nature inspired me in becoming a more thankful person to what I’ve received. Your selfless approach gives a mark for me to be like that. The main thing commendable about you is that 'not every negativity deserves our reaction’ this very thing is enough for dealing with lots in our lives. Through the characters (professionally) and personally you have been an ideal sight for people like me. No actor has ever changed me like the way you did. My words won’t stop and the reason is you. Thank you, our sweetheart, the miraculous our K. God bless you ❤️ - Nidhi Chillinsilencee

AN INTERVIEW WITH KATIE JAGEL OF @THEQUEENSTITCH
Katie is a knitwear designer. And she’s amazing. She recently launched her own label, The Queen Stitch, which now boasts an endorsement from Paintbox Yarns, work with sustainable knitwear company The Rare Creature, participation in NYFW and an Instagram of 3700+ followers in just over one year (all this while managing a day job in political science and data analysis).
I caught up with the Wonder Woman to chat about the zeitgeist of people like her - and myself - who are aware of situations such as environmental and social offenses by the fashion industry and yet are choosing to take part in it anyway. She was nice enough to offer her thoughts and knowledge of sustainability (she claims it’s limited, but I beg to differ, which just goes to show that strides are being made by both vendors and designers) despite the slight inconvenience.
An Inconvenient Wardrobe: Just to start. You’ve always been very creative and fashion-oriented. But leveraging both serious work and then the creative and taxing work of starting a fashion job, wow. So super impressive.
The Queen Stitch: To be honest this came a lot from just living in NYC and realizing I had to level up. In middle/high school I wore jeans and a graphic t shirt almost every day. And then all of a sudden like a full tweed outfit… I’ve never been good at balance.
AIW: Haha. Ok but I’m wondering what you think of the following. To start, what are you aware of when it comes to fashion’s destructive impact on the environment?
TQS: Honestly this has been one of my most eye opening journey’s into the fashion industry. And has everything to do with fiber. In the beginning, I really knew nothing à la Jon Snow. I used the cheapest yarn to make hats, scarves, sweaters. Making knitwear was just a hobby and “who was I” to buy expensive fibers if I was just going to experiment and make super simple things with it. The semi-good news about this is that in this phase I would get all the yarn from my nana’s craft shop – Craft Bits and Pieces in Fairport, NY. All the craft supplies in this store was donated by people and was usually leftovers. I was “reducing and reusing” in this way, but I was still making the choice to use incredibly detrimental fiber which was almost always an acrylic blend. Washable, easy to manage, but I would argue either the worst or second-to- worst material to work with in terms of environmental impact. I also knew that most “designers” would use purer fibers, like wool, alpaca, and cotton. So once I started to really design things, around the end of college, stuff I thought was “good enough” I started using wools and cottons. I thought these were inherently better because they were purer fiber and not synthetic. I was wrong. Cotton in particular and the softening and dyeing processes it goes through is super bad for the environment. I had to learn this as well. You and Nicole (another of our friends in fashion) were quick to correct me and inform me about the processes around cotton in the industry. It was after this telling off (thank you seriously) that I actually started to invest time into researching my fibers. This was further aided by meeting my friend Lisa of The Rare Creature. She studied sustainable fashion at Parsons and we met through Instagram DMs (which are not always dick pics it turns out). She had started her own company in the pursuit of creating amazing quality, sustainable, unique yarn. From her I learned more about the actual process of how yarn is created, how companies hire out manufacturers in Peru etc. Learning more about the process, the quality, and the responsibility that these companies are taking, impacts my choices now.
I still use cotton in my work, and I try to make more informed decisions. For example, I do still use brightly colored cotton. I have made that choice, for spring and summer wear you can’t beat cotton. However, I now use almost exclusively the yarn at Paintbox, that make smaller skeins so there’s not as much waste, and you’ll be sure to use all of it in your garments. I also use the organic cotton LOOP from The Rare Creature (of course). In the winter I still use wool and alpaca, but I’ve started using un-dyed, recycled, and local fibers (more on that later).
AIW: Do you attempt to embrace any sort of sustainability in your process? (Small-batch, homemade production counts here)
TQS: Yes. All of the choices I am able to make have come from learning about the processes. I alluded to many of these choices above, and many of these choices started within the last year, but I am trying to make up for my former ignorance by talking about it. Because I think many hobbyists, with no real fashion education, really just don’t know about it.
And there’s no real drawback [to not being sustainable]. Or at least, the benefits make up for the only drawback – which is cost. Often, sustainable, local, un dyed yarns are slightly more expensive. But there are so many benefits outside of the sustainability aspect. When you buy local you’re feeding back into your community, your strengthening small indie businesses, you’re making it easier for them to enter into wholesale and larger scale practices which then brings costs down. I love the small business (and specifically fiber arts) community because there’s this real down to earth neighborly vibe. Everyone’s trying to help you and teach you; it can veer into mild defensiveness when people try to stick their nose in your business to help when you didn’t ask, but even that, begrudgingly, does at least lend itself to other perspectives ushering me along my creative journey.
AIW: What do you know about the process of where your yarn comes from? Do you think that’s a concern in the knitting community yet?
TQS: Every yarn is different and it’s up to the maker to learn about where that yarn is coming from. One of the benefits of smaller, local yarn shops, like YAK in Brighton, UK or the Brooklyn General Store in Brooklyn, NY is that the workers there know exactly where the yarn comes from, usually the practices on the farm, and generally know the providers personally. My local shop the Brooklyn General Store, actually has pictures of all the yarn makers, and a brief bio about how they got into it and where they’re from! I think the awareness of yarn quality and sustainability is rising with social media. Some of the big yarn giants like Wool and the Gang are starting to educate through Instagram and blog posts, and indeed create new fiber lines and styles that explore the possibilities. WATG have a recycled wool called Heal the Wool that’s 100% recycled, their Tina Tape yarn is 100% vegan, and saves the most water of any yarn I’ve heard of; their Billie Jean yarn is made from upcycled denim waste and uses no chemicals or dyes. Then lastly they have a Jersey yarn made from fashion factory off-cuts, which is another waste user. Just on Instagram they have over 150K, so they’re definitely a forerunner in getting the word out.
AIW: By nature of the fact that you make everything yourself, it’s ethical production. Is this ever a selling point for you, or do people who buy your stuff like the idea that it’s handmade, one of a kind? Do you think that's marketable? And, is sustainability a discussion in the knitting/crochet community?
TQS: The handmade, one-of- a-kind vibe is an easy sell, people love that. Ethical production? Honestly, I don’t think that’s something people care about as much. It’s like a nice add on. Like “I was already gonna tell people this was handmade by local artisans but now it’s even better because it’s also sustainable”. What people care most about is cost. Handmade goods cost more, you’re charging people primarily for your labor and for the materials you use. Not all of my friends can afford a sweater I make. I can’t even really afford it. There’s something sort of messed up in there. Otherwise you’re going to Forever 21, and it’s a don’t know don’t care sort of policy that you feel okay about since you only spent $15. I appreciate this hypocrisy and I own things from Forever 21. But I think with the dissemination of information around the unsustainable practices of the fashion industry getting harder to ignore, the guilt from those purchases will increase. Further, I think consumers are starting to understand that handmade doesn’t necessarily mean shit quality. Things that take 40-100 hours to make often last longer, feel better, are better than things that were made on a machine in 30 minutes. I don’t think it’s a realistic assumption that people will cut out these ‘fast fashion choices’ but hopefully they can start making less of them, less often.
It’s a growing discussion.
AIW: Are you open to using yarns made of new tech, like recycled wool, recycled polyester? (Based on what you told us about Wool and the Gang’s offerings, it sounds like this is already a thing.)
TQS: So I’m a bit spoiled. I live in New York City and there are a lot of designers and makers who are interested in sustainable practices who are experimenting with fibers. So not only am I open to it, I’d like to choose from them. The weirder the better. Working with texture, putting them together, contrasting them, that’s what designing is about.
AIW: If these types of yarns were made more available, would you prioritize using them?
TQS: Course, course. AIW: Additional thoughts on what sustainable or ethical means to you as a young, new maker entering the industry?
TQS: I think it means learning about it. I think it’s very humbling to enter an industry, not least the fashion industry, there’s a learning curve and a lot of information. I would say just be open to learning about it, but also factor in time-to-learn. It’s not all about manufacturing.

Waste Not Want Not: Art And The Atom
Mark Peter Wright – I, The Thing In The Margins, 2015, C-type Deluxe Print, Image courtesy of the artist
The delicious-sounding location of Onkalo, Finland is home to the world’s first deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel. Still under construction, but designed to be operational for at least one hundred years once it is complete, this facility aims to tackle the problem of nuclear waste on a geological timescale. The half-life, or the rate of decay, of many nuclear isotopes can stretch into thousands of years, which means that nuclear waste will remain dangerous long after you and I have kicked the bucket. According to Michael Madsen’s 2010 documentary on the subject, Into Eternity: A Film For The Future, the nuclear waste stored at Onkalo will not be safe for another 100,000 years. This begs the question: As the cultural tide shifts back into acceptance of nuclear power as a ‘sustainable’ resource, how do you ensure that future generations become aware of the fact that this location is extremely dangerous?
Thank You For Your Patience, which premiered at the Hackney Showroom in July, is a play that attempts to answer this question by exploring the idea of intergenerational equity in relation to nuclear culture. Written and performed by Hector Dyer, with an accompanying soundtrack by Rob Morton, the work takes the Onkalo spent nuclear fuel repository as its principal starting point, before deviating into alternative narratives, one of which is set in an unnamed British village, and the other, in a harsh, but distant future.
The latter narrative tells the story of people who stumble across a contaminated geological repository. How do they interpret what they find? Building on Madsen’s film, Dyer’s monologues introduce the problem of semantics with respect to long-term nuclear storage solutions. Languages are constantly evolving and our understanding of semiotics can change significantly as generations succeed one another. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recognised this problem and, in 2007, published a new symbol to represent the danger of ionising radiation, with the aim of replacing the old trefoil image with something more intuitive.
Rob Morton & Hector Dyer – Thank You For Your Patience, 2017, Photograph by George Galkin
Catching up with Morton and Dyer after their performance, I couldn’t help but ask them why it was that they found this subject intriguing enough to write a play about it. Crouching on a slither of artificial grass outside of the Hackney Showroom, Morton paused for a moment before answering: “The idea that you could leave a warning to people – they might even speak the same language, but [the message] just has no cultural meaning – gave us lots to work with”. Dyer continued his colleague’s train of thought: “We also felt that the concept of it being set 100,000 years [into the future] goes beyond our perception of time, and that allows you to write fiction that goes beyond our perception of what human beings will be”.
Whilst Dyer’s monologues deliver a wealth of dark and complex ideas, Morton’s soundtrack drives the play by providing a contextual backdrop and much needed colour. Rather than being a supporting agent, however, Morton's music comes to the foreground by melding together dubstep, jungle, vapourwave and field recordings. In the process, Morton’s electronic atmospherics recall sounds from a “deconstructed club scene, people like Total Freedom or Bala Club. It’s very noisy, aggressive stuff that’s meant to be played at nightclubs, but just isn’t danceable at all”.
Don’t Follow The Wind – A Walk In Fukushima, 2016-, 20th Sydney Biennale, Photograph by Leila Joy
A little research into the concept of nuclear culture reveals that Dyer and Morton are far from the only artists interested in exploiting the atom. The Nuclear Culture Sourcebook, edited by Ele Carpenter and published last year by Black Dog Publishing, is an excellent resource on the intersection of art and what Carpenter calls “the nuclear imaginary”. Concerning itself primarily with the visual arts, the book’s most chilling example of how far artists will go to highlight the dangers of nuclear power is film documentation from the Don’t Follow The Wind exhibition.
This collaborative show was initiated by the Japanese neo-Dada collective Chim-Pom. The collective assembled works by various artists, which related to nuclear culture, and exhibited them at various locations in the Fukushima Exclusion Zone. Due to the extreme contamination levels of the site it is impossible to tell when the exhibition will be open to the public. Its duration, therefore, is indefinite. However, the collective’s hand-made virtual reality headsets (above), most recently available to view at the Art Catalyst show Real Lives Half Lives: Fukushima, earlier this summer, are able to place the spectator right at the heart of the devastation, which followed the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of 2011.

Peter Cusack – Chernobyl Frogs, 2012, Field Recording
Working a little closer to home, the experimental musician, Peter Cusack, made field recordings of various nuclear sites, most notably inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Divorced from context, field recordings can often be a difficult sell, but Cusack provides a short blurb for each piece of audio. Compiled in the 2012 book, Sounds From Dangerous Places, these recordings offer a glimpse into a largely abandoned, eerie environment where nature has usurped mankind’s dominance, yet the invisible dangers of radiation linger in the background.
The theme of invisibility is also pervasive in the work of Mark Peter Wright, a sound artist whose main focus has been the exploration of the Anthropocene, a familiar theme to some readers of tQ. Whilst this new geological time period does not immediately suggest notions of the nuclear, Wright traces its proposed beginnings back to 1964, “which saw a peak in radioactive carbon following two decades of nuclear weapons testing”. Wright’s sound works rarely involve sound at all, but rather focus on its absence. His mutating microphone sculptures (Humanimentical Prototype) and wandering deadcat Sasquatch (I, The Thing In The Margins) suggest that, like Dyer, Wright is also interested in fictions that go beyond our perception.
Mark Peter Wright - Humanimentical Prototype, 2015, Image courtesy of the artist
The Japanese cultural critic and art anthropologist Noi Sawaragi, who contributed an essay to The Nuclear Culture Sourcebook, summarised the close relationship of art to nuclear culture: “When people think of ‘art’ they imagine the visual arts, but like radioactivity, art too is invisible. When we encounter art, what we tend to see is merely the artwork-as-substance. And while the artwork-as-material is visible, we still might fail to appreciate the experience or meaning of the material that makes it art. We expect to experience an abstract power of art, something emanating, invisibly, one might say, almost like radiation”.
Although the nuclear industry takes strict precautions and reactor designs have improved over the years, Chernobyl and Fukushima prove that major accidents do happen. So do smaller, clearly avoidable ones. Furthermore, the gung-ho approach of the Trump administration to North Korea’s fits of attention seeking, coupled with the reactionary stance from the Labour party to Jeremy Corbyn’s attempts to scrap Trident, only go to show that we are still living in the Atomic Age. As our bold new century moves forward, I expect that issues relating to the "the nuclear imaginary" will increasingly become one of the primary concerns for socially conscious artists operating in sound, performance, and multimedia.
The Nuclear Culture Sourcebook is available now, published by Black Dog Publishing
