Boyfriends

A self aware take on Boyfriends, including Harry and boyfriends of those he cares for. The lyric video features a lone swan, a symbol of commitment. Harry was with a swan in every image for his May 20 2019 Gucci Campaign, released the week Boyfriends was first written. Harry and Taylor were pictured with a Swan on her birthday when they went to The Lakes. Harry who has spoken about the song with pride and deference. Let's start with the gorgeous first take:

Harry said to Zane Lowe it was written at the end of Fine Line:

"There was an extra week where we wrote some stuff, wrote Adore you, TPWK and we were recording Lights Up. [...] At the end of that session everyone left and I started writing Boyfriends and it almost felt like OK there is a version where we get this ready to put on this album, and I think there was something about it where it felt like it's going to have it's time. [...] I am learning so much by saying it [...] It is both acknowledging my own behaviour, looking at behaviour I have witnessed and looking at I grew up with a sister, so it's like watching her date people and watching friends date people and you know people don't treat each other nicely sometimes. And it turned out about boyfriends because I started paying it and saying boyfriends. [...]Just say what you think of boyfriends.

Harry was in the studio from 15 May 2019, the Swan Gucci Campaign was released on he and Taylors anniversary that week. It was also 2 weeks after Me! Was released. When speaking about Boyfriends Harry constantly mentions these other songs. They have a common theme about the impact of the behaviour of others on his relationships and self, true his nature it is subtle and gentle:

Adore you's video asks fans to respect the partner(s) of his choosing, in contrast to fan reaction who he dates.

TPWK, as the title says, Harry told Rolling Stone " It made me uncomfortable at first, [...] I feel like that song opened something that’s been in my core.”

Lights Up - to Rolling Stone Harry spoke about stepping out from 1D on his own, the lyrics of "I'm not ever going back" and "All the lights couldn't put out the dark running through my heart", link the experience of the band and fandom to mental health and knowing who he is, rather than who others want him to be.

To me, coming at the end of that session adds to Harry taking ownership his role in failed relationships in that time by being unaware of the impact his 1D persona. fan treatment of his partner(s) and emotional unavailability. Taylor has also described her anxiety dating him in Slut! and Gold Rush. However, as Harry said, it is not limited to himself. On its release at Coachella, (3 years after it was written) "To Boyfriends Everywhere, F*** you". This was weeks after Taylor wrote You're Losing Me about Joe. Setlist and Tracklisting

Harry placed Boyfriends on HH between Satellite and LOML. Harry stopped playing Boyfriends after November 15 2022, when he played it live with Ben Harper at the end of the L.A. Forum residency. It was only played once in 2023, at Wembley June 16. The next night was the only time he played Sweet Creature since 2018. When it was on the setlist it proceeded LOML or Lights Up.

[...] Harry invited me to stick around because he wanted to finish the song right then and there. To get to watch Harry in his process was eye-opening, and I learned a lot. The opening is Backwards 'Ooh Fool, you’re back at it again'. Sunflower Vol 6 also opens with 'Sunflower' backwards. I think of this as about a backwards life, success followed by a normal life.

The first verse describes how boyfriends take their partner for granted and misunderstand.

Weakened When you get deep in He starts secretly drinking It gets hard to know what he's thinking You love a fool who knows just how to get under your skin You, you, you still open the door

The second verse describes where partner has met their guard down some boyfriends withdraw, and start drinking. Harry has sung of this before in Half the world away “I’ve started drinking”. Harry has mentioned drinking in other songs, but HTWA has a similar meaning, of drinking in secret to cope.

Harry touches on common themes in his discography:

Not communicating, similar to MMIH “we don’t talk about it”

Not getting over this person - Getting under you skin is a reference to Taylor’s The Lakes: “What should be over burrowed under my skin in heart-stopping waves of hurt” and IWYW “You always knew how to push my buttons”

Doors - here Harry's muse is opening the door, Harry has 7 songs that refer to knocking, opening or not opening doors. Taylor also has 13 songs about Harry and doors.

While the first 2 verses the Boyfriend was uncommunicative, emotionally unavailable and didn't consider their partner. In the third verse the boyfriend and partner are learning from failed relationships, but still no closer. Now the boyfriend is only calling when they want company, rather than to be there for their partner.

Halfway home: The X Account 'I am Halfway Home' was started to promote HH. The term could have several meanings:

a Halfway house is a place to reintegrate into society from an institution.

The song is a play on words of having no more emotional closeness despite being physically halfway home, and

Halfway home is the name of a documentary about the toll war takes on veterans and their families.

Home is an important theme to Harry's work, Home meaning being with the right person rather than a physical place. To me, this lyric is Harry is saying that despite his growth since leaving the band and break down of this relationship they are still not emotionally closer.

Boyfriends Are they just pretending? They don't tell you where it's heading And you know the game's never ending You, you lay with him as you stay in the daydream You feel a fool You're back at it again

The closing of the song is a sense that the boyfriend is being a player, not communicating.

But Harry's muse gives in, wanting to stay in a dream. Slut! has a similar idea of choosing to stay in a love haze when you know it's not going to last "Got lovestruck, went straight to my head / Got lovesick, all over my bed / Love to think you'll never forget / Handprints in wet cement". Harry also says this in Daydreaming: "Livin' in a daydream"

Harry and Taylor have both used 'fool' in reference to their relationship before (in Fools Gold, Cardigan, Illicit Affairs, Joker and the Queen and in Long Pond Taylor said it 7 times about James in Betty.)

Finally, it refers to the cyclical nature of their relationship with 'back at it again' as OOTW 'built to fall apart and back together' and Style "when we go crashing down we come back every time' and many other songs.

This is dismissive and ignores Harry's considerable charisma and fantastic work ethic. He's a superb live performer: fearless, word perfect, very strong vocally and happy to banter back and forth with the crowd. This can't be bought or taught.

He's also happy to make a complete clown of himself and spend hours in costume and make up to create interesting videos like MFASR and Daylight. He even learned ballroom choreography for TPWK. Louis for some reason wouldn't even play a main character in the Walls videos despite having a background in theatre. Zayn, Louis, Liam and Niall just walk about in their videos or sit in a pub.

You harries are so exhausting sometimes. How is me saying H get's everything he points as dismissive? It's the truth. There is a reason he gets everything he points at, and one part of it is talent.

You do know that when you're favoured from the first minute by the people in power who can make things happen, and the others are told they'll never make it, that you gain confidence and motivaton to perform and do well? On the other hand, being told you'll never make it and that you aren’t good enough will do the opposite? That all this will forever determine and shape their career trajectories and opportunities they will be given?

Yes, there is a reason H was chosen. He's got charisma, charm and has a bendable will. Perfect to mold into a pop star. Harry could make the worst song ever and still chart. He wont because he has been given the opportunity to work with the best songwriters (not because of his charm or connections, but because his label pays them handsomely) and he has the best creative directors and music video budget. He has people blowing smoke up his ass daily. His confidence in himself is sky high. If Harry would have been given the same conditions as Liam, Niall, Zayn and Louis, and been told he'll never make it from day 1, been given bg or an unfavourable image, it wouldn't matter how much charm or charisma he'd have. He'd be in the same boat as them.

Charting is about 50% label support and labels throwing their power around, 40% artist image and reputation, and 10% raw talent. You hardly ever see unknown, talented artists with really good songs chart anymore. You can be the most talented, lovely, interesting and original artist you want. If you don’t have label backing or a carefully curated image and PR people who'll create engagement and interest in you, nobody will know who you are and care to buy your song or album.

So while you sit there praising H and dragging the other members. Think about how easy his road to the top has been. His road was paved with gold. Meanwhile the others were held back, burdened with false unfavourable images and had to claw their way out of the ditch. They weren't given the same chance to shine, because Sony though there could only be one successful star out of 1D. They also held the others back to have everyone's focus on H.

Think about how hard mentally it's been for them to have to take the long road, how insecure they are after being told they're not good enough and how it has impacted their confidence and motivation. In order to act, sing, dance and perform like H does you need confidence more than you need talent. You need investors, powerful people and companies to have 100% faith in you to gain that confidence. H's got that, the others don't.

Maybe we can means he’s not sure if we can but he’s hopeful, wanting to find a place to feel good is important to him, implying he hasn’t found a place where he feels good and where people are treated with kindness

Got a good feeling implies some level of intuition or instinct, and that he’s just riding the waves as they come, dreaming (a big theme always) “she lives in day dreams with me” floating as in moving up towards the sky where sunflower is “hung up high in the gallery”

To me this is him saying to his person to stay here long enough, to hold on, to wait. There have been continual references to Harry and someone he’s connected to feeling immense pain and he’s saying if we hold on, things will improve, always encouraging them to hold on and things will get better “you can see the world, following the seasons everywhere you go”

What he wants for himself and for his person, we’ll belong “we belong to light, we belong to each other” (we belong, pat benatar). Harry doesn’t feel like he and someone else belong, he doesn’t feel like he and a lot of people belong, but the use of the word will implies he thinks in the future that can change

He’s admitting that there are things he doesn’t know “there’s things we’ll never know” (fine line) but that he doesn’t need to know everything to feel good, he’s no longer “worried about where you are, or who you will go home to”

This is morbid randomly out of the blue, but Harry has lost people to suicide in his life. Some maybe to drugs. He lost his stepdad. I think he’s dealt with a lot of loss and he’s had to just keep going.

But it’s okay because we can just make it through this rough time

All we ever want is automatic all the time. All we ever want is auto all of the time

Harry has this theme of feeling robotic (satellite music video) but also “tea with cyborgs” a real disconnect from our own humanity, but he’s saying he recognizes how things take time sometimes. We aren’t robots, we’re humans and part of being human is not having all the answers and being patient, and hoping things get better, he’s letting go of a lot of his need for control

Ultimately I feel like this is a song trying to encourage people that it gets better and we can create the spaces, the homes we longed to have. I think this is a sentiment he has expressed in a few different songs.

Hi! We actually had 6 for Fine Line (Lights Up, Adore You, Falling, WS, Golden and TPWK). And so far 3 for HSH (AIW LNT and MFASR) and now Satellite. I think the picture of Harry on set is for Satellite and the yellow bird was something else.

I love the idea of Matilda being a single but, for some reason, I feel like it won't be? This is pure guessing but I feel like his pop/dancy songs are the ones people seem to engage with the most nowadays. I think Matilda is AMAZING live and super emotional, but I'm not sure if it's strong enough to make it a single, at least not right now, maybe he can make it his last single like he did with TPWK or something so there isn't so much pressure on making it a hit involved. So maybe the yellow bird video is a single that was just pushed back? Anyway, I hope we do have more music videos coming after Satellite, but my guess would be Cinema or Keep Driving.

Or rather, let him adore who he wants.

The Adore You video is about how his fans treat Harry's partners. To Rolling Stone Harry said:

“This time I really felt so much less afraid to write fun pop songs. It had to do with the whole thing of being on tour and feeling accepted [...] It came late in the sessions: “Lights Up,” “Treat People with Kindness,” and “Adore You” were written in the final week this spring, in a burst of inspiration.

TPWK, Lights up and Adore You each have a message to fans:

Adore You's video asks fans to not make it impossible for him to date his partner(s) of his choosing

Lights up, Harry said it is about "stepping out on his own" the lyrics include "I'm not ever going back" (I infer to 1D)

TPWK is asking his fans to do just that, including him and the people he chooses to date.

When asked by Capital FM (4:33) if Harry was the boy in the video, Harry first said it was a metaphor and he acted the part, then when followed up he said "it's a music video everyone!" The start of the video tells of superstitions and silly ideas. Everyone frowns, Harry has a brilliant smile. He is peculiar, the voiceover says:

No one ever meant to be mean towards him, but in a town grown used to how things were, no one knew what to do with something different.

Harry bottles up his rage, is depressed and goes to drown himself. He sees a fish and saving it saves Harry.

Who is the fish? When asked on SiriusFM, (3:00) Harry said, “Is the fish even a fish? Is the fish a metaphor? Who is the fish?” an Olivia is an emotion style answer to say the fish is a metaphor. There is

Taylor Swift has a famous Koi Guitar, called the Koi Living Jewel. the artwork reflects Taylor's guitar and the TVs refer to the fish as a Jewel Coat (Junior Jewel), However

The fish is grey like the salmon in a 1980 Children's book Louis the Fish. The book is about a vegetarian butcher who is turned into a fish. The book has an anti-vegetarian message. Harry is Pescatian. This is utter madness, it reminds me of him saying to Stern that sometimes his fans find unlikely similarities that aren't really there.

The fish is personifying his love for a partner and he is asking is fans to help and not attack the very real people he dates.

The fish constantly get's bigger, Harry does everything but the fish literally doesn't fit in his life. In the end he has to let the fish go and be alone because it is too hard for it to be with him.

The fish starts thrashing when the fisherman chops another fish. To me this is a metaphor for how the music industry and fans treats them. Harry repeats this in Music for a Sushi Restaurant where the shop only keeps him while is singing brings customers.

Seaview Cottage at 88 Seagull Lane is an easter egg for Harry's House (H= 8th letter) and Keep Driving: 'Choke her with a Seaview'. Seagull lane is a reference to Taylors shirt on the cover of 1989. And a townsperson receives a Message in a Bottle.

Harry eventually sails off alone powered by his screams. :(

When was it written

Harry said to Zane Lowe he played Liam Gallagher Fine Line in March 2019 but that Lights Up, Adore You and Treat People were all written later, in the last week. It was written with Amy Allen, who is based in LA. That places it after the Met Gala around 20 May 2019. He was in the studio on 15 May 2019.

'Walk in your rainbow paradise' responds to Me!'s "Like a rainbow with all of the colors". Both refer to Out of the Woods "The rest of the world was black and white / But we were in screaming color.” Harry and Taylor refer to each other as all the colours. Me was released 4 weeks before Harry wrote Adore You.

Strawberry lipstick state of mind refers to Taylor's signature lip colour, referred to in Style 'Red Lip Classic thing you like' and Two Ghosts 'Same lips red, same eyes blue'.

In Little Freak Harry expressed a similar idea of caring but not in a possessive way or asking for anything from her "I'm not worried about where you are / Or who you will go home to". This makes is clear they are not in a relationship.

Taylor sung about this difficulty dating Harry in:

Slut! "If they call me a slut / You know it might be worth it for once", and

This verse is describing a summer romance, (Brown skin, Lemonade, Summer Skies) which Taylor also did in this period in Cruel Summer.

Harry talks about his muse as summertime and butterflies in Olivia. He also said he would brown his skin while they waited for him in the Sky in Golden.

I’m the anon you were asking about. A Harry music video clip (TPwK) popped into my feed randomly and I listened for the first time and liked it. Popped on YouTube and then got into Louis which led me to song analysis and Larry. When I saw the secret touches, jealousy it all made sense. I still see the patterns today! I saw Louis live and confirmed everything I thought I’m glad I found it even though it’s not the easiest fandom to be in

Wow! How much views can differ! But he doesn’t see all the fights, the fake people and all that! He only sees people being „“nice“ to his team and so on but not because they’re kind but because they think that way they can get closer to him. When he did this speech about „“no one is alone here, just look around you there’s so many people“ that made me realize he really doesn’t have a clue! I‘ve never felt so alone in a room full of people than at his shows! Sure you can get along with casual fans or maybe locals but the „hardcore harries“ he’s talking about in this video of his speech are so cruel and only do what has an advantage for them! Will I be going still to shows? Of course because I love him and his music but the crowd is the worst and most horrible people I‘ve got to know! No wonder he’s friends with all those attention seekers and stuff, he really has a poor judge of character and only sees the surface but not what lays beneath

I don’t think it’s quite that black and white. I have a hard time painting people with such a broad brush and assuming the worst about the situation and the people involved.

I can see where you’re coming from to an extent, though. The first two shows I went to felt very much like the video. Everyone was nice and we talked to so many people. The residency shows in NYC, not so much. By then, HsH had been released and he really blew up in terms of popularity, so I think there were more casual fans in attendance. I just attributed the difference in atmosphere to that.

When I reflected on my LOT experience, there were a few things I didn’t enjoy but overall, I loved it and I’m choosing to focus on the good parts. Personally, I wish I had a Harry bestie like so many in the video did. But my irl friends just aren’t that deep into it like I am, if they follow him at all. I felt a little envious of those relationships but still enjoyed seeing them, even if it’s not my personal experience.

I wouldn’t say he’s unaware that there are dicks in the fandom that most definitely don’t TPWK. But this video was intended to be a celebration of the tour, so of course, he’s going to ignore the ugly parts. I think the video captures the spirit of what he wanted tour to be.

I don't understand that theory at all––he's released less for this album than he did for the last. But also, so what? How would releasing more videos mean more views on all of them? But if it did, what's wrong with that? Music videos are a way to generate interest in him and his music. I don't understand the way some people think. Should he just disappear and not continue to generate interest in his work?
