Happy TPP Secret Santa to @nbsunshineboy!

This is the kind of heist that Juno can actually get behind. The mark is Neptunian old money, with a mansion big enough to make the Kanagawas jealous and enough spare cash to throw big elaborate parties every few weeks. A few months ago, the whole building was flooded with water and the guests raved in fish tails and breathing masks. Last month, it was a murder mystery dinner theater so realistic that Dark Matters was called in to investigate. 

This month, it’s an eighteenth-century-style masquerade ball. 

With anyone else, Juno might be concerned with the security at this event, but he’s seen this team work. The big guy is disguised as a caterer, plain-faced but absolutely invisible as he makes his rounds among the partygoers. Buddy and Vespa are dressed to the nines, Buddy in a gown that spirals around her the way she does around Vespa, who leads her in the dance so smoothly that Juno has to check to make sure her feet are actually touching the floor. Their eyes are on each other as they spin, so intent that Juno has to look away to avoid getting sucked in by their gravity.

He hears a throaty giggle over the music, and glances over at Rita flirting with a gentleperson in an abstract mask that doesn’t quite cover their face, much to Rita’s delight. For an instant her eyes meet Juno’s: she flashes a delirious grin that’s visible even through her mask, and he flashes her a thumbs-up in return. As if by his signal, she seizes her new crush’s hand and tugs them onto the dance floor and into an anachronistic tango.

Technically, Rita doesn’t need to be here. It took her all of ten minutes to write the necessary code to bypass the digital locks and security alarms, but there was no way in hell she was missing an actual masquerade ball with cute little hors d’oeuvres and fancy dresses and dancing. 

She didn’t actually know how to dance, but that wasn’t much of a problem. Juno still remembered enough from way back when he would help Ben practice for his competitions, and Rita’s got a knack for picking things up faster than should be humanly possible. For the first few minutes of lessons he thought it was going to hurt, teaching her to dance the way Ben taught him-- and it did. But it was the hurt of a sore muscle after a day at the gym, the hurt that’s supposed to be there, the hurt that comes with healing. 

Ben would have loved it. He would have loved Rita, and the way she shakes her hips to make her dress swish around her, the way she takes the lead as soon as she gets the hang of the steps, the way she wiggles against her partner. 

To be completely honest, he was a little scared of coming to this event. But part of getting better is figuring out how to have fun with his friends, and this? This feels good. It feels right. He can feel his brother’s memory in the music and the spinning dancers, and it feels like Ben’s right there hugging him again.

Maybe he’s a little drunk on the feeling. Maybe that’s why, when he notices one of the masked dancers watching him, he extends his hand in a silent invitation.

As the man approaches him, Juno catches the details of his mask: like the tuxedo beneath it, it’s a tangle of geometric shapes in white and a thousand shades of red, arranged in a hypnotic pattern that slowly resolves itself into the face of a fox. 

And sure, maybe that had something to do with why Juno asked him to dance, but for the first time in a long while the memory of Nureyev feels as comforting as the memory of his brother.

The Fox says something, and although it’s muffled by the mask and buried by the sounds of the party, Juno can make a few educated guesses. So he adjusts his own mask, grabs the edge of his gown, and joins the Fox in a dance-- and when the tango ends tragically soon, they continue into a waltz, and then a foxtrot, and then a bolero that leaves him out of breath (or maybe breathless).

For the first time since he arrived at this party, he feels a pang of regret. Because this isn’t just a party, it’s a heist, and even the assistant to a burglar can’t just give out his personal number at the scene of the crime. 

“I could use some air,” Juno says, pointing to the nearest door for emphasis. He half expects the Fox to wave him off and find a fresh dance partner, but instead he offers Juno his arm and an escort to the courtyard. 

Nine of Neptune’s moons hang above them, casting an ethereal blue glow on the night. Night-blooming Cygnean jasmine winds up Zirconium pillars, their blossoms glowing in surreal patterns, blinking back messages to the stars. 

There are so many stars. He never saw them on Mars, not like this, not without the glowing filter of a dome overhead. Out here, the sky is alight with hundreds of stars-- thousands-- billions-- impossibly bright and unspeakably beautiful. 

He didn’t realize he was caught up in staring at them until he feels an arm wrap around his shoulder, keeping him warm. 

“They’re beautiful, aren’t they?” the Fox murmurs, and Juno’s heart almost stops.

He knows that voice. Even low and still half-muffled by his mask, he knows that voice, just like he knows that cologne now that it’s only competing with the perfume of Cygnean jasmine instead of the personal fragrances of a hundred other dancers. 

Inside he wouldn’t dare utter the word on his lips. But out here they’re alone, just the two of them and the night air. Out here, surrounded by infinite stars and even more possibilities, it slips out without a thought, as soft and sincere as a prayer:

“Nureyev?”

TPP FANDOM HOLIDAY EXCHANGE!

Hi folks! Welcome to the Penumbra Podcast Fandom Holiday Exchange! We thought it’d be fun to do a secret santa-style gift exchange between fans of this incredible podcast. We’re hoping to keep it low pressure, low stress, and therefore Maximum Enjoyment.

i couldn’t decide what they were doing in the first one (lol) and i started the little comic bc i thought it’d be nice to have something with nureyev..but the humor ended up being too ambiguous, so i went with the yoga scene i posted earlier..! hope you have a happy holiday season bec!!!
