What a difference 62 years makes juxtaposition of Toyopet Crown Utility Wagon, 1962 & Toyota Crown Signia Limited, 2024. There have been long-rood versions in Toyota's Crown range since the first generation in 1955. The S40 second generation was the first to be exported to Europe as well as the US (where the first generation had been a sales flop). The new Crown Signia is a long-roof, high-riding SUV/Crossover version of the 16th generation Crown

It's really great that an event for fans of JDM cars was held in my city. It's a fantastic opportunity to see rare cars like Honda NSX, Toyota Crown or Toyota AE85 Levin. I wish I could also see Mazda RX7 Savanna FC but, oh well, I have to settle for RX8.

What sort of car does BJ drive? A post I saw earlier reminded me of this question again.

As a casual admirer of vintage cars from the late '60s—'70s, and a fan of the Black Jack manga, the question of BJ's saloon has crossed my mind before.

Tezuka-sensei wasn't exactly specific on this issue, but on the bright side, that means it's open to fan selections.

After taking into account the time period (BJ was first published in 1973, so Tezuka likely had cars produced a little earlier before that in mind), the location (Japan), and the (deliberately vague?) car emblem, my pick would be the Toyota Crown from the late '60s—'70s as a likely candidate.

Toyota Crown Super Saloon, 1971. Just as Chrysler had fuselage design in the early 70s, Toyota had spindle styling epitomised by the S60 series Crown with its body coloured integrated bumpers and rounded aesthetic. The Super Saloon was the new flagship model but the S60 was a sales flop and was the last Crown series sold in the US until 2022. The S60 was facelifted to give it chrome bumpers but was replaced by the more conventionally styled S70 in 1974. The Crown is one of Toyota’s and the world’s longest running models, running continuously since 1955 through 16 generations.

I love old cars! Especially those from the 80s. Of course, I'm a big fan of Initial D and drifting. If you ask me which car I like the most, I'll say it's Mazda RX-7 Savanna FC. Unfortunately I'm probably never going to see it live. My second choice is Toyota Supra MK3 and I've seen it several times in my city. Last month I was even able to get inside. It's such an awesome car! Luckily they organised the Night of the Classics at Toyota dealers. So my hubby and I could see all those old cars including JDM. That was incredible. Pity there was no AE86 Sprinter Trueno. I suppose it's super rare to see one. I think Toyota Celsior was the most astonishing car there. I was like: who the hell needs bling-bling tail lights? And there were some other cars like Ford Capri or Jaguar E-type. I really enjoyed that event. I wish Mazda or Nissan could do something similar.
