Police have arrested the girlfriend of Joliet mass murder suspect Romeo Nance for allegedly preventing police from finding her boyfriend after they said he killed seven members of his own family and one other person on 21 January.
Kyleigh Cleveland, 21, was charged with obstruction of justice on Wednesday after she allegedly told police she didn’t know Nance’s phone number as the manhunt was underway.
Police said they first made contact with Ms Cleveland when they were looking for Nance’s three-year-old son after he was not found at either of the two family homes where the shootings took place.
When detectives found the child at a home in Plainfield with Ms Cleveland, the 21-year-old was cooperative with police, and agreed to be questioned, authorities said.
However, detectives believe she withheld critical information from them to prevent them from apprehending Nance.
Ms Cleveland, who is the mother of Nance’s three-year-old son, was ordered by a judge to be placed on home confinement and electronic monitoring.
Police believe Nance went on a deadly shooting spree on 21 January, shooting nine people in the Joliet area, eight of whom were killed.
Seven of the victims are believed to have been related to Nance, police said. The victims were later identified as Nance’s mother, aunt, uncle, brother and three sisters.
He is also believed to have shot two men at random, including the final victim, 28-year-old Toyosi Bakare.
Investigators do not believe that Mr Bakare was related to any of the other victims.
The ninth man, who was shot in the leg, is also not believed to have been connected to any of the other victims.
Nance later took his own life hundreds of miles away in Natalia, Texas, following a confrontation with law enforcement officials, police said.
Following the shootings, it remains unclear why Nance travelled to Natalia, which is more than 18 hours away from Joliet by road. Illinois authorities confirmed on Tuesday that Nance had no known ties to Texas.
Medina County, Texas, sheriff Randy Brown said he believes Nance was trying to reach Mexico.
“It seems like they [criminal suspects] all head to Mexico,” he said.
Police are now working to establish Nance’s motive for the killings.
“We can’t get inside his head,” said Bill Evans, Joliet’s chief of police. “We just don’t have any clue as to why he did what he did.”
“We may never know the truth or motives,” added Dan Jungles, Will County Sheriff’s Office deputy chief of operations.

📝 Editorial: Can AI Solve Science?
Discovering new science is considered by many, including myself, as one of the ultimate tests of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). We are witnessing glimpses of the potential impact of ‘AI for science’ with models such as those discovering new computer science and math algorithms, or the famous AlphaFold, which is actively used for discovering new proteins.
Is AI going to discover everything?
Can AI help explain the universe?
What are the limits of AI when it comes to science?
There are many theories about the possibilities of AI in scientific domains, but not a formal theory. Last week, computer scientist and physicist Stephen Wolfram published a long and detailed essay attempting to explain the potential and limits of AI in discovering new science. Wolfram’s theory relies heavily on one of his favorite theories: the principle of computational irreducibility.
Wolfram introduced the idea of computational irreducibility in his 2002 book, ‘A New Kind of Science’. This theory also relies on the idea that the universe can be modeled using formal computations. Some of these computations are reducible, which means they allow shortcuts to speed them up, while others do not allow for such flexibility and require executing all the computation steps. Science is possible because, even though many phenomena are computationally irreducible, they contain pockets of reducibility in which patterns can be inferred.
What does this have to do with AI? Well, AI is a form of approximating predictions by inferring regularities in data. In that sense, AI can be applied to solve those pockets of reducibility, but what about the rest? Well, easily, the irreducible parts can be processed using a formal computation language like Wolfram Language (coincidentally 😉).
In summary, Wolfram believes that AI can help advance most scientific workflows, but it will always be limited by the nature of computational irreducibility. In other words, this will prevent AI from autonomously solving science. However, combining AI with computational languages opens the doors to all sorts of possibilities when it comes to advancing science.
Whether you agree with Wolfram’s theory or not, you have to admit that it is certainly interesting. AI, by itself, cannot solve all science, but the combination of AI and computational languages could get pretty far.

By • Olalekan Fagbade Two children reportedly electrocuted, Mother hospitalised A yet-to-be-identified mother in the Mushin area of Lagos State is currently battling for her life after losing two of her children to electrocution on Thursday. The PUNCH reported that sources in the area said the children, a girl aged 10 and a boy aged seven, were electrocuted when they attempted to turn on the television after returning from school. The newspaper gathered from the sources in the area that the parents, who were speculated to have been away or inside the room when the incident occurred, on learning the fate of their children, were thrown into despair with the mother fainting and currently battling for her life at the hospital. A resident of the area named Toyosi, who spoke to the newspaper, described the incident as a work of the devil. She said, “I heard that it was after school on Thursday, the girl was trying to turn on the TV from the socket when she got electrocuted. Without even knowing what had happened to his older sister, the younger boy went to touch her, he too got electrocuted. “They stayed at that spot until the light was taken and then they fell. I heard the woman is still at the hospital. She has yet to recover from the shock. We heard that when people went to visit her, she couldn’t talk, she couldn’t cry, she just sat at a spot, looking.” Another resident of the area, who didn’t give her name, disclosed that the mother of the children had a third child she was breastfeeding when the two older ones passed on. #TwoChildrenelectrocutedMotherhospitalised
