touya’s phone is swiped out of his hands and onto the floor by a dirty wet rag. his head whips to the other side of the room to find you staring right back at him, white knuckled with another rag in hand.

“if i stopped caring, this would be easier for the both of us?” you repeat, taking stepping closer, “are you fucking kidding me?”

he’d be lying if he said that there wasn’t something surging through his body as he watches you storm over to him, abandoning your caddy of cleaning products. was it fear? excitement? attraction?

you throw the rag down against touya’s chest. he watches it fall onto the ground between his legs before snapping his gaze back up to you.

he says nothing for a moment, and instead adjusts himself on the bench of the wooden lunch table. you watch him lean back, cross his arms across his chest, and prop his ankle over his knee with nothing but a smug smile on his face.

he couldn’t bite back the smirk- not even when you looked like you were ready to kill him at this moment.

“i said what i said.” he shrugs.

you lunge at him.

this isn’t you. you’re not the type of person to get into physical altercations. you both know that. last night you couldn't even look at touya after the embarrassment of crying in front of him, but now you wanted to throw him into the ground.

your venom usually comes from your tongue, not your fists, but there's been something brewing inside of you since the summer started and now that you’re here with a two week grounding at your grown age, you’ve come to the conclusion that you have nothing left to lose. 

“it’d be easier,” you grab him by the collar of his shirt, balling the fabric in your fists as you push him into the table, “if you knew how to be honest and communicate instead of being a fucking coward and tip-toeing around the conversation we’re going to eventually have to have anyways.”

you hated how his eyes were gleaming. it was obvious he was enjoying himself, and seeing this reaction out of you may have been the highlight of his summer so far.

“we had that conversation, didn't we?” he cocks his head to the side with a lazy smile.

you shake him a little- tugging him back and forth before digging the edge of the table into his back again.

“stop looking at me like that,” you scold, "take me seriously."

“and there’s that scowl,” he mutters.

the more heat that prickles up your neck, the tighter you grip onto his t-shirt.

“can’t you be fucking normal and have a conversation with me? a serious one? or do you drop off the face of the earth and suddenly lose all of your comprehension skills?”

“well, fuck, sweetheart. when you’re screaming in my face and manhandling me like this, you make it kinda hard to concentrate.”

“you’re impossible,” you scoff, throwing him away from your grasp.

you stand up straight and take a step back, huffing out a breath of annoyance.

you and touya look at each other in silence. you watch him readjust his wrinkled and stretched collar while he watches the blood pool back into your hands. you still have that scowl on your face, and for a second you look like you’re a kid again- post tantrum, pouty, and ready to take your frustrations out on him when you don't get your way.

“there really is nothing?” you exasperated “you grew up and this is just the way that you are now? you turn seventeen and decide that nothing matters to you anymore?”

“seventeen,” he repeats, “is complicated and nothing that i want to talk about.”

not even to me?

there’s still a part of you that still feels bonded to touya no matter how many conversations you’ve had with yourself about letting him go. as if the feeling of being kids together will never leave you, even when he’s sitting right in front of you as living proof that it’ll never be that again.

“would you have ever reached out if you didn’t end up here this summer?” the question slips out of your mouth. you weren’t sure if you really wanted to know, but judging from the flash of shock on his face, you probably already knew the answer. “since you said you didn’t have a choice.”

touya presses his lips together into a tight line.

“yeah,” he sighs, “probably. eventually. i think.”

you slowly nod your head, “and what would you say?”

he blows out a long breath of air through his teeth and shifts himself in his seat, the wooden bench suddenly becoming uncomfortable.

“that i’m sorry? i guess?” he says under his breath.

all the time that had passed, and he still couldn’t get a grip on his words. something about his uncomfort with being vulnerable was comforting for you in a way, like it was the first nostalgic moment you’ve had with touya all summer.

“right,” you scoff, backtracking towards your side of the cafeteria. “nothing like the present, touya. five years later and i’m still waiting for that apology whenever you’re ready. or an explanation. or literally anything to make this summer less shitty than it already is.”

“lotta pressure for a guy like me, don’t you think?” he chuckles, standing up and grabbing his phone off the ground.

“call it accountability. we’re both adults now aren’t we?”

clearly, he thinks to himself, watching you grab your caddy and head towards the exit.

“have fun with the bathrooms,” you call out, throwing your middle finger over your shoulder before the door slams shut behind you.

Being in many of the same classes with your boyfriend was equal parts frustrating and endearing, much as he was in general. The two of you started out friends, and your relationship sort of…happened. Out of the blue, you realized that the little coffee trips the two of you would take in the morning, where he’d sit for hours in the cafe and study with you, even though he probably had much better things he could be doing… you started to realize those were…dates.

His little hand touches and flirtations, and the way he’d tense up when another guy seemed remotely interested in you, not to mention how awkward he’d get when the two of you were alone, those things began to make much more sense.

All these little signals and signs of affections led you to straight up ask him, to which he grinned and said “I thought it was obvious” before kissing you on the cheek and running away like an idiot with his friends Tomura and Keigo quick on his tail, shouting from surprise that he’d professed and even kissed you so openly. He’d vented to them about how nervous he’d been around you, so where’d those nerves go?

and after all this time, you still weren’t sure.

So yes, sharing classes with him was frustrating, and yet endearing. Frustrating, because your relationship, real as it was, hadn’t changed much on paper. He still treated you just the same, flirtatious grins, cocky remarks and all, but just a few added in kisses and occasional sweet words whispered in your ear in a busy hallway. It was frustrating to see him treat your relationship so… well, normally, you supposed. But at the very same time, you found his expressions of love to be ever so endearing, because all the things mentioned above were made that much sweeter by the very knowledge that those behaviors and words were saved for you.

Touya was the top of your class, always passing effortlessly, and he was handsome to boot, and yet he only had eyes for you. He only ever went out of his way to help you. And when he needed advice? You’re on speed dial. The two of you are quite the dynamic duo, if you can believe that. And I say that because no one really does. Another frustrating part of your relationship is, unless they’ve bore witness to his affections towards you, most classmates would have no idea you two were together.

But you could look past that…kind of. Even though the girls across the room were ogling him like he was the hottest man they’d ever seen (with that quirk they wouldn’t be wrong) you had to sit and tell yourself that everything would be fine. Touya would say the same thing, he’d say not to worry about them, because he didn’t give a flying fuck about them. His words not mine.

So yeah, your relationship with Touya is… interesting. But, he was also the only guy you’d ever really gotten along this well with. Before him, you swore you’d focus on your studies and stay out of relationships in college, but here you are. And before you, and college, he’d never been able to even dream of getting into a relationship with someone as amazing as you, but here he was.

Oh and all that anxiety he’d had around you? All those nerves that had seemingly disappeared when he confessed?

He was drunk as hell.

“You look,” You have to pause, your brain cogs turning frantically in search of the right word. “Nice. Like, really fucking nice.”

He scoffs, sending you a look that screams annoyed, but you can tell it's faux. “Yeah? What's What's supposed to mean?”

“It means you look gross most of the time.”

“Wow.”

You laugh, the sound much louder than you intended. “You really are a baby.”

He brings his hand up to your face and pushes you away, earning him a hard swat at the wrist. “Seriously, though. You do look really nice.”

You finally take a moment to look at all of him; the way his silver hair seems less frizzy, the soft hug of his suit around his surprisingly thick arms—holy shit—and you only now realize the color of his suit. “Wait, are you matching me? Is that why you asked to see what I was wearing?”

His gaze doesn't leave you. “Does it matter?”

“I suppose not.”

It did matter, because he came here. The shade isn't even off, the fabric almost identical—he didn't just get it willy nilly, he put thought into it.

“The dance doesn't start till 9? It's 4:30.”

“Pictures.”

“My mother could get us better pictures.” He scoffs again, taking a good look at his surroundings. He ignores the look Keigo throws at him—the one that screams I told you so.

Touya hadn't really planned on this. Not when you asked him for theme ideas, or when you told him about post-prom. But it wasn't a spur of the moment decision. The night he called you, when you started crying and told him about how something so silly had you stressed beyond belief. And it wasn't something silly to you, you liked this stuff, no matter how stupid he thought it was. You enjoyed getting all dolled up, the pictures, the people, the dance and the music, the stupid after-prom or whatever it was.

And he didn't want to admit it until then, but he liked it. He liked the excitement in your voice or the way you ranted on and on about the decoration ideas you'd come up with, the food, the stupid games. And he wanted to see you. He wanted to see you in person, get a long look of how fucking stunning you are in this color.

And when he manages to get his hands on you, now hours later, he doesn't know why he'd been so adamant about not coming to this dance.

You're looking at him—so sweet, so pretty—with your arms wrapped loosely around his neck and he wants to kick himself.

You're smiling at him like he's everything.

“Can I be honest?”

You hum as if you're thinking about it. “I dunno, Touya. Honesty isn't your strong suit.”

“Shut the fuck up, don't ruin this.”

“Sorry, sorry.” You amend yourself, your hand moving to pat his shoulder. “What's up?”

“I like this.” He doesn't miss the way you furrow your brows.

“The dance?” He almost says no.

“I like this.” His hands tighten carefully around your hips, pulling you slightly closer to him. “I like us.”

He says the last part quieter, making sure to move his face closer, the words mumbled against the shell of your ear. Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

Your smile managed to get so much bigger, your eyes meeting his the second he pulled his head back, and he wouldn't trade the sight for anything.

“Show me.”

He can't help but lean in again, this time for a kiss.
