Every day I find a little bit of time. I put my timer on for 10 minutes and write. Invariably just as my ideas are getting good the timer goes off and I’m forced to stop and start my day (or get back in to it, sometimes I don’t have time to write till after dinner).

This blog is a collection of my ’10 minute musings’. Some will be great, buoyed by interesting ideas from deep within my mind. Some will probably be terrible, meaningless drivel based around nothing. Are you ready? It’s already begun.

I begin this series in a hotel in Perth. Half of my working week is spent in a two-piece blues band, The New Savages. We ostensibly live in Melbourne, Australia, but spend Thursday-Sunday most weeks touring the country, from playing tiny country pubs to some of Australia’s largest festivals. We eke a living between these two extremes, mainly by surviving on pub meals (chicken parmagiana’s five meals in a row), and selling cds to cover petrol money. Is it worth it? Sometimes. 

There’s days when it works well, we’re excited to be on the road, we enjoy each other’s company. The music is great, the crowds appreciative, and we get our fill of free beer. At the other end we once spent 11 days not talking, playing 12 shows from Melbourne to Newcastle and staying in cheap backpackers. Resentment flourishes and every little interaction spurs hatred. It’s tough as a two-piece. We spend 60% of the year in each other’s pockets, away from our girlfriends and home-life. But being a two-piece is what makes it work, as a six-piece band I’m sure the relationships would suffer less, but the financial bottom line would be unsustainable, so we do what we do.

Life on the road is weird. There’s the inevitable sameness of country pubs. There’s the incredible people we meet. Personal favourite is “D” from Beechworth, a wonderful elderly woman who’s headed off to Spain for a month holiday. Over beers we discuss her desire for a young Spanish man. She’s seen us play five times, and keeps coming back. There’s the massive crowds of people who appear at community festivals, overwhelming the dance floor and spurring us on to play encore after encore (current record is five, but this’ll probably increase as time goes on, if the crowds good we hate stopping). It’s an interesting life.

This nomadic lifestyle concerns me. I enjoy aspects of it (getting paid to play music, constant eating out, free beer, occasionally meeting interesting people), but it’s a constant weigh up between these positives and the obvious negatives: being away from home and family for long periods of time. When we tour I’m away Thursday to Monday for long stretches (last tour was literally three months long), and my time at home (Monday night to Thursday arvo every week) is spent doing my part-time day job, teaching music to primary school students.

This doesn’t leave much time to do anything really. Develop relationships? Attend friends birthdays? Exercise? Not a chance. This is a pretty big trope in indie rock band lyrics. It’s always on the second album. The first album got the band some exposure, got them playing shows and on the road. The second album is about being on the road (due to pressures from record labels and a sheer inability to take time off to write new music). The Road, by Jack Kerouac. An investigation into the touring lifestyle of a small independent touring Australian band. 

We romanticize this idea that the road is the be all and end all of being a musician. And for many aspects it is. Where else can we get attention from strangers? Where else can two fans who saw us in Adelaide (and bought the shirt), come to Perth to see us play again, and it’s just like we’re old friends, despite only meeting a couple of times. Even on the absolute highest level I think the road is a both the greatest joy and a boon for artists. The Rolling Stones swear off touring every couple of years, but once you throw enough money at them they’re back. Even Coldplay talk about touring as if its in imposition on their lives (it’s hard to be away from our family for most of the year), but they’ve literally got enough money now they could take their entire entourage on the road. But what’s your wife going to do while you’re happily getting drunk and playing music with the boys? There’s issues at stake, and it’s not all tied to being a small band. This nomadic lifestyle definitely doesn’t match up with many aspects of being a fully-functional adult, but as musicians we’re given scope to avoid that for longer than most people.
