Right before the pandemic hit the globe, Luzon in the Philippines suffered from a volcano eruption that caused ashfall in several provinces. A bunch of Filipino artists got together to raise funds by selling a zine and illustrated postcards. We each chose a beloved tourist spot in the Philippines. Here's mine: Vigan, Ilocos Sur. It was a memorable time of mask-wearing and community initiatives that, kinda eerily, preceded the pandemic. We worked so hard to release it during Feb 2020 Komiket, on top of our own con preparations. It's one of the reasons that that Komiket will always be memorable to me.

SURE ILOCOS SUR!
Nakaumay kan kadi dtoy? Naramanam Kadin agiti makan mi? Naamwam kadi nga masa a Lugar ditoy llocos ket nagbalin a parte ti Seven Wonders of the world? No saan pay, Anya paylang ti kukwaem? umay kan ta inta pasyaren ti idul dulin nga pintas ti llocos. But first, let's go through the reasons why llocos should be on your bucket list and why it's the ideal place to spend your holiday.
Ammom kadi? Colonial Spanish history coexists with the vibrant Ilocano culture here in llocos Sur. Also, locos is one of the most historically significant areas in the nation. Hence, it is considered the ideal location for history aficionados and interested tourists alike because of its historically significant buildings. although, if you're looking for a vintage vibe, here are Sta. Maria and Vigan which made the locos twice as famous because of their heritage, and which makes you travel back in time. However, the church of Sta. Maria boasts the Philippines' most memorable architectural designs. While Vigan, which is the capital of llocos Sur, is known as the best-preserved example of a planned colonial town in Asia, and was also named one of the world's seven wonders for its uniquely maintained colonial architecture. Furthermore, since locos Sur is located in a coastal area, several watchtowers were built to protect the province from pirate attacks. The famous Bantay Bell Tower and the Bateria Watch Tower are still intact and have stood the test of time. However, locos Sur is not only known for its historic places but also for its mouthwatering foods like the famous Vigan empanada, pakbet, sinanglao, and longganisa, but these are only some of the appetizing foods of locos. On the other hand, after immersing yourself in history and delectable foods, be amazed by the breath-taking scenery of Pinsal Falls, which is perfect due to the hot weather because of summer. Only some of this are presented to complete your bucket list but If you want to know more, come, visit, and savor locos Sur.

… at Max’s Restaurant

Ultimate Vigan Escape: Budget DIY Itinerary for Ilocos Sur Tour
[ TAKEOFFPHILIPPINES.com ] A great time to end my month-long vacation on this New7Wonders in the World, Vigan, Ilocos Sur. Its rich history made it to the list of the Unesco Heritage Site as this city was established roughly 16th century now but still, the preservation of the architectural design are visible in the city even on their urban development program.
The main attraction of tourist here in Vigan is its preservation of almost 187 ancestral house in town, colonial structured churches, donation-driven museums, a free-roaming zoo and local Ilocano restaurants which is a must visit.
It was an exciting trip that I can’t forget as this was our first trip together with Gab going up north in Ilocos Region. It was really tiring but fun at the same time as we were simply backpackers. You can roam around the city within 2 - 3 days. We’ve got to experience The Ultimate Vigan Escape for a rough estimate of Php 5,000.
Here are a travel guide and a sample DIY itinerary going to Vigan if your planning to visit this city soon.
Where to Ride Going to Vigan?
As Vigan is located here in Luzon, we can either go for a land or air transportation. There are many Vigan Tour Package offerings on every travel agency that you could try. It may include a van going to Vigan for an easy and worry-free trip but As for us, we decided to ride a bus. We felt that the best way to enjoy the trip is to experience riding it on the public transportation.
We tried Partas Bus using their Online Booking System. There are several bus companies you can try on your Vigan trip but since convenience is our priority we ride on a Partas Bus. I recommend their good and fast service on accommodating our concern during our trip.
Express Bus Via TPLEX Fare: Php 760.00 (1 route, 5 - 6 hours travel time, 1 Stopover in between)
Riding a Partas First Class Express got us the following privileges:

Touring Around Vigan: Mode of Transportation
Vigan is a capital in Ilocos Sur that you can encapsulate your activities with just a day or two since its just a small town. Tourist spots along the Vigan proper are walking distance from each other but always prepare yourselves with a big bottled water and umbrella since the scorching heat of the sun is very imminent. Places like Baluarte, River Cruise, Mindoro Beach, Bantay Church Bell Tower seems to need to go for a ride since its a bit far.
The main transportation used by people here is either the tricycle or a kalesa (horse-drawn carriages). If you’re looking for a more intimate time I would suggest riding a kalesa to enjoy the scenery but if you have limited time like us I would prefer riding a tricycle.
Tricycle Fee: Php 20 - up (Depends on the distance)
Kalesa Fee: starts at Php 150
Where to Stay in Vigan?
While exploring the streets of Vigan, we’ve noticed that each corner has numerous choice of hotels, inns and transient houses. Name it! You won’t have any problems looking for one. All you have to do is to be keen in looking for more affordable and cheaper rooms from the internet.
Luckily we found the right tool to search for affordable hotels in Vigan by using Traveloka. Traveloka helps you book your hotels and flights in less than 5 minutes with just a click away. They even had promos that you can use while booking. You can check their website or download their app on Android and IOS to try it first hand on this travel booking app.
Since we want to visit all the well-known tourist spots around Vigan City with less cost but still has a decent accommodation we landed on Mel Sol’s Inn and Resort at Bantay, Ilocos Sur, a 5-6 minutes tricycle ride from Vigan Proper.

When in Vigan: Where to Go?
We arrived at Vigan earlier than expected, we didn’t foresee that our bus has a new that's why we have ample time to roam around and go to church to start our Sunday with a positive outlook.
Simbaan A Basit
Liberation Blvd, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur
It is located at the edge of a Cemetery in Vigan. According to history, the cemetery chapel was built over a century now and it is dedicated to Santo Cristo also known in Ilocos as “Apo Lakay” who is believed to save Vigan’s populace from a plague in 1756 and 1882.
The chapel’s marker bears that the cemetery was blessed by Rev. Vicente Barreiro on Nov. 9, 1852 but the chapel’s interior now looks modern with all the repairs done through the years. Its name "Simbaan a Bassit" literally means "Small Church", since it’s a small it can only accommodate up to 100 people.
Vigan Heritage Village - Calle Crisologo
Crisologo, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur
After a mass at Simbaan A Basit, we decided to stroll around Vigan and search the well known Vigan Heritage Village wherein it was considered as a UNESCO Heritage Site as it helps out preserved the culture and history of Ilocos Region.
You can explore those old houses with a century older than me by riding a Kalesa (horse wagon) or by simply walking on the streets, as it also helps out burn some calories. It is much appreciated during the night as you can feel the romantic ambiance and stunningly beautiful light post in the area.
Mostly you can have your dinner on this streets as they have plenty restaurants to choose from and buy some cool stuffs on souvenir shops.
Vigan Cathedral / St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral
Burgos St., Vigan City, Ilocos Sur
After not so far from Vugan Heritage Village you can visit again a nearby church. Vigan Cathedral, It is a Roman Catholic Cathedral in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. It serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia.
According to history, The church itself was built in 1641 to replace the chapel and became a cathedral when the seat of the Diocese of Nueva Segovia was transferred here from Lal-lo, Cagayan in 1758, but not before being ravaged by a fire in 1739.
The Cathedral of Vigan, as it is sometimes called, is a stunning tribute to Baroque architecture modified by the Ilocanos to survive earthquakes. It also has a bit of Chinese influence thanks to the carvings of lion dogs beside the outermost doors.
Plaza Salcedo
Plaza Salcedo, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur
Right in front of Saint Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is the Plaza Salcedo, named after the Spanish conqueror, Juan de Salcedo who subdued the early native settlement in Vigan and established upon it Villa Fernandina for the monarchs of Spain in 1572. With this, Juan de Salcedo founded the third of many Hispanic settlements in the Philippines. Plaza Salcedo was the site of the execution of Gabriela Silang in September 1763.
According to history, the plaza was susceptible to fire during the Spanish regime. So the plan then was to create a man-made lagoon to minimize fire incidents. The original concept dating back several years ago is retained until March 2013 wherein a dramatic addition has been added to the once quiet and laid back park in between the Vigan Cathedral and the Ilocos Sur Capitol. The addition is a majestic dancing fountain.

The Ilocos Sur Naturals Beauty
hello everyone its me Aprilyn Uclusin, Allow me to show you some of the province of Ilocos Sur's natural beauty and wonders.
Ilocos Sur was founded by the Spanish conquistador, Juan de Salcedo in 1572. It was formed when the north (now Ilocos Norte) split from the south (Ilocos Sur). At that time it included parts of Abra and the upper half of present-day La Unión.
The province is famed for its diverse culture and history, as well as its heritage sites, adventure parks, and, of course, its cuisine. This time, though, we'll be focusing on the wonderful sites to visit in Ilocos Sur.
1. Vigan Cathedral
Another Vigan Ilocos Sur tourist spot to check out is the St. Paul’s Cathedral. Also known as Vigan Cathedral, it is considered a major religious landmark not only of northern Luzon but the country as well. The original structure was built in 1574 with wood and thatch. It was just a mere chapel then. It was only in 1641 when it was turned into a church and was completed in 1800.
The Vigan Cathedral follows a Baroque architectural design that has been modified by Ilocanos to strengthen the structure against earthquakes which is known as “Earthquake Baroque.” Don’t miss this as it is one of the most beautiful Vigan tourist spots.
Highlight:
Earthquake Baroque architecture
2. Calle Crisologo
If you want to travel back in time, Calle Crisologo is the best place to be. This tourist spot in Vigan City is a street of old Spanish structures, mostly houses of wealthy families and Filipino-Chinese traders. This is where you’ll see the famous cobblestone streets that represent Vigan’s image.

Tourist Spots In Province of Ilocos Sur
Hi I’m Shaina Maye Torda and I will be your tour guide here in province of Ilocos Sur.
Ilocos Sur (Ilocano: Makin-abagatan nga Ilocos) is a province in the Philippines located in the Ilocos Region in Luzon. Its capital is the city of Vigan, located on the mouth of the Mestizo River. Ilocos Sur is bordered by Ilocos Norte and Abra to the north, Mountain Province to the east, La Union and Benguet to the south and the South China Sea to the west. Ilocos Sur was founded by the Spanish conquistador, Juan de Salcedo in 1572. It was formed when the north (now Ilocos Norte) split from the south (Ilocos Sur). At that time it included parts of Abra and the upper half of present-day La Unión. The current boundary of the province was permanently defined through Act 2683, which was signed in March 1917.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilocos_Sur)

Too hot for you? Let’s go to Baguio!
When it comes to Baguio City there are a lot of attractions to prove that it can compete with what the international attractions have to offer. So why should we opt to go to Baguio instead of outside of the country where its so much cooler? What makes Baguio so special that we need to make it one of the first options when deciding where to go on vacation? Let me give you ten great reasons why Baguio is a superb choice this summer. First of all in the current situation of the nation most travel out the country being banned going to Baguio is the next best thing to going out of the country to beat the summer heat, with the cool temperatures of the destination offering a respite from the crazy heat that summer brings, you have to admit nothing beats staying in a place that is cool even when the rest of the country feels like it’s been tossed into the largest oven on planet Earth.
Secondly Baguio presents a laid-back sort of vacation style, a staycation so to speak where the vacation becomes stretched out for a longer period of time. With its commendable hospitality it’s no wonder why people find it easy to stay a bit longer and relax with their friends and families while savoring the cool weather. Third, and perhaps one of the reasons that would tip the scales in favor of Baguio is the affordable rates. I mean let’s face it, no matter how much we want to go to our dream vacation spots the amount of money in our pockets still has us on a leash and pushes us to opt for the next best thing. In this place you would still stay cool but at a more affordable price which is what most people opt for when in a pinch. The fourth reason is one for all the foodies out there, the summer capital of the Philippines has so much to offer for one’s palate. It is up to you what you like, you can probably find it there as there are a plethora of restaurants offering everything from American to European to Asian dishes and so many other options also you can check out the fusion dishes they have just in case you feel deliciously adventurous and want to try a bit of two different food cultures Or go for the healthy route with many health conscious options as the local produce is nothing to take lightly be it fruits or vegetables you can take your pick at the local public market which has daily fresh options to choose from oranges to apples to strawberries as well as other healthy yet tasty choices. And you can take a minute to sample the many delicious coffee blends and variations while you are at it, which to humbly put it has achieved international recognition. The coffee brews the locale has to offer speak for themselves so for those who love themselves a good cup of joe in the morning this is another reason to head here.
Now on to the fifth which calls to all those fitness buffs out there. The city is quite walkable and with the locals encouraging tourists to walk instead of ride it would be quite advisable to pack an extra pair of sneakers and get ready to soak in the sights the city has to give while taking a gander down to the many parks that are within walking distance of each other such Burnham park which is quite accessible by foot from Session Road as well as the Orchidarium and the public market. And when it comes to art and culture the city has more than enough to offer to satisfy even the most skeptic of the impact of art. There is no bigger proof of this than the UN giving Baguio the title “Creative City” a statement to its efforts in sustaining the arts and culture of the area. Now the sixth reason appeals to a certain wish of parents and its that they want their kids to put down their gadgets and connect more with the physical world. Bonding with the family could not be more fun with so many parks in the city. Who would say no to a family picnic at Burnham Park, going biking with the family or gang, as well as a friendly badminton or ball game at the park when the weather is so perfect for such activities? Not to mention the hiking options offered in the area which give you the chance to get breathtaking views of the City of Pines while giving you time to bond with your loved ones. Another factor that adds to the charm of Baguio is that it is quite near to other top-notch tourist destinations in the surrounding province: the beaches of La Union in 2 hours or to the famous Calle Crisologo in Vigan, Ilocos Sur in 4 hours. Sagada in the Mountain Province is only 5 hours away from Baguio. Your family can have a week-long road trip from Manila to Ilocos Norte or Mountain Province with Baguio as one of your stops. So whether Baguio is your destination, pit stop, or base whilst exploring the other tourist attractions in the area you can be sure that it will not disappoint.
I have always enjoyed going to Baguio City for these reasons not to mention it brings pride to my heart that though our country is small it has yet another wonderful offering for both local and international tourists. It is the beautiful climate, Scenery, locale, as well as deep cultural significance that Baguio has which draws people in. So for the natural scenery lovers, the foodies, fitness buffs, coffee enthusiasts, tourists who cannot go out of the country or basically anyone who is just looking for a place to chill and unwind that is not as expensive as going out of the country or as far from home.

I never imagined Ilocos to be our first family road trip. Firstly because it was a long and destination-full travel and secondly, because my son was just 4 months old at that time and it seemed impossible to do the trip with all the infant “paraphernalia” we have. But still being the go-getter me, I made sure our itinerary was fool-proof and fortunately, our 3-day trip went everything to plan. So here is our Ilocos trip in chronological order.
Blue Lagoon
We spent most of our 1st day on the road as we opted to go to the furthest north as our first stop – the famous Blue Lagoon in Pagudpud. We stayed in Hannah’s Beach Resort for breakfast and took a quick walk on the shore. It was my son’s first time on the beach so it was such a delightful treat seeing his tiny feet on the sand.
Along the way were some steep hills which were also quite a scenery. We were tempted to go down the rocks but had to leave soon to catch up with the rest of our itinerary for the day.
Bangui Windmills
The famous Wind Farm of Bangui, Ilocos Norte is indeed a top highlight when travelling to Ilocos. This nine-kilometre stretch of wind turbines supplies 40% of Ilocos Norte’s electricity and is a very good model for implementing sustainable energy country-wide. The strong breeze coupled with the crashing waves of the West Philippine sea had both our hair and spirits fly.
Kapurpurawan Rock Formation
This famous destination along the coasts of Burgos is yet another nature’s masterpiece formed by the natural forces of the ocean. Kapurpurawan came from the Ilocano word “puraw” which means white.
Cape Bojeador Lighthouse
One of the many things Ilocos is popular for is being a haven of Philippine cultural heritage. Cape Borjeador was our first blast from the past during our tour. Built in the 1890’s, this historical landmark is still functional and guides ships away from the rocky coasts of the north.
Sinking Bell Tower
Laoag’s Cathedral is famous for its bell tower that sinks at a rate of one inch per year due to its sturdy structure built on a sandy foundation.
Malacañang of the North
It is pretty much well known that the infamous dictator and former President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, was born and bred in Ilocos Norte. So it was not a surprise that many of the Marcoses’ memorabilia are found in the province. One of which is the former leader’s family residence during his seat as Chief Executive. Setting aside my personal political thoughts on the Marcoses, the visit on this Presidential Museum was curiosity-satisfying and I cannot help but note of how the locals honor them.
Paoay Sand Dunes
Well, if we were single and as wild and free as before, we would definitely rent a 4×4 jeepney and ride our lives away the Sand Dunes of Paoay. But since we have a sleeping infant left back at the car, we just chose a simple stroll and pica sesh notwithstanding the windy atmosphere bringing sands on our faces.
Paoay Church
It is common for a Filipino traveler all over the world to include churches in their itineraries. That’s why we made sure we won’t miss this three-decade old UNESCO World Heritage Site in Paoay.
Baluarte Resort and Mini Zoo
We concentrated our final day around Ilocos Sur’s center, Vigan. We started in Baluarte, a 100-hectare property of famous Ilocano politician Chavit Singson, in our attempt to stimulate our son’s interest with animals in its famed Zoo and Safari Gallery. We also side-tripped to the mansion also situated in the same area.
Pagburnayan Jar Factory
This is our first time together in a jar factory and we were quite amazed with pottery. Though we did not get a chance to try it out (soiling out our hands are not the best option when you have a infant to carry), we definitely look forward to someday experience this craft.
The Hidden Garden of Vigan
This not really hidden restaurant of Vigan was surely the city’s gem. Food was good and a sure place to experience the local delicacies of Ilocos such as the Vigan empanada, Poqui-poqui and Warek-warek.
Calle Crisologo
The most known tourist spot in Vigan is a street that will take you back to the Spanish era. This is now a busy commercial street full of antique and souveneir shops, but its cobblestones and ancestral houses are well-preserved which is definitely why see-goers won’t dare skip to visit.
Vigan Cathedral
Bantay Church and Bell Tower
Our last stop for the Ilocos Sur trip is 2 of the oldest structures in the province. It is a longstanding watchtower circa 1591 that was converted into a church Bell tower in 1857.
To cap this post, here are some of our family random road trip snaps. Surely, this is indeed a trip to remember that we will be delighted to show our son when he grows up.
Family Road Trip to Ilocos I never imagined Ilocos to be our first family road trip. Firstly because it was a long and destination-full travel and secondly, because my son was just 4 months old at that time and it seemed impossible to do the trip with all the infant "paraphernalia" we have.

The Culture of Ilocos Norte
On the Outside
Ilocos Norte is a province of the Philippines located in the Ilocos Region. It comprises 21 municipalities and 2 component cities, further subdivided into 557 barangays. Ilocos Norte is also known as a northern tourist destination of the Philippines and of each municipalities they have their own tourist destination. Let see the tourist destination of Ilocos Norte.
The provincial capital is Laoag City. When you start your Ilocos Norte adventure, you are most likely to start here. It’s the hub of everything Ilocano. Just go to Museo Ilocos Norte and you’ll see. The region’s main offices and universities are also located here. World-famous sights such as Pagudpud, Paoay and Vigan are less than an hour’s journey away.
Ilocos Norte is a province rich with natural resources and tourist attractions. The preservation of natural scenery and historical landmarks make up the aesthetic of the province. Some famous attractions include:
The Bangui Windmills
The Saint Augustine Church at Paoay
The Sinking Bell Tower of Laoag City
The Patapat Viaduct and the white sand beaches of Pagudpud
Read more about it here.
The Diverse Culture of Ilocandia
The province is a whole puzzle of uniquely created pieces that fit together in order to form a masterpiece. This means that each municipality/city comprises different groups of people having similar or dissimilar customs and traditions. Each of these divisions having different stories to tell and different origins of their beliefs and culture. Luckily, everything is encapsulated into one event which, though, makes it simple to understand but it is presented in the most grandiose way that people would never get enough of.
Hailed as one of the most highly-anticipated cultural events in Northern Luzon, the Tan-ok ni Ilocano festival was first organized in 2011 by Governor Imee Marcos as a grand showdown of different festivals found among Ilocos Norte’s 21 towns and two cities.
“Tan-ok” is the Ilocano word for “greatness,” thus it is known as the festival that celebrates and honors the Ilocano cultural heritage. “Truly, culture and heritage mean so much to every Ilocano, to every town that would like to tell its story. Story-telling indeed is what we can do, telling and sharing with the world the extraordinary stories of Ilocos, the Province and the Ilocano, that great nation that spans the globe,” said Marcos.
Each dance reflects the unique culture of every municipality and city by highlighting their own products, livelihood, history, religion, tradition, and natural heritage. The performers are young Ilocanos proudly representing their towns.
From the extravagant costumes to the professional-level choreography, It is fairly obvious that the participants pour hours and dedication into their performances.
This also shows that apart from the resiliency and thrift of the people in Ilocos Norte, the people here are remarkable for their sense of pride and love for their place they call home.
When asked what is with Tan-ok Festival that the people are delighted about, an Ilocano will say, "Come and see."
Tadek Festival of Nueva Era
As previously mentioned, the different uniqueness of each town make-up for the different themes that are portrayed by each town during the festival. We have the Dinaklisan Festival of Currimao, the La Virgen Milagrosa Festival of Badoc, the Empanada Festival of Batac City, the Garlic Festival of Pinili, etc.But the Tadek Festival of Nueva Era is filled with fantasy like a forest brought to life.
Nueva Era is a quiet paradise in the east, endowed with rich natural beauty and culture.
The early inhabitants of the town were the Tingguians. These early tribes were pagans, and lived a simple life depending on their environment – hunting, fishing and farming through the kaingin system were their means of living.
The Tingguians had a distinct culture, their own music, songs and dances, dialects, beliefs, traditions and celebrations. These genuine components of their culture bind and unite them together.

Diving into the Culture of Nueva Era
One of the ways to appreciate the culture of a certain place is to immerse ourselves in it and after hearing about the majestic mountains, the pureness of air that surrounds the place, the fascinating community within the area, its oddity and peculiarity, we have decided to explore deeper into the perplexity of Nueva Era.
About Nueva Era
Nueva Era, officially the Municipality of Nueva Era, is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Ilocos Norte. It is one of the Indigenous Cultural Community of the province. Just like Adams, Ilocos Norte
The town is situated along the provincial borders of Kalinga, Apayao, Abra and Ilocos Sur on the east, southeast and south, bounded by Marcos Espiritu on the north and Pinili-Bado-Espiritu on the east. A flat, rolling and mountainous terrain, the municipality has a total land area of 644.70 square kilometers and is the biggest town in the northern part of the province. As of 1995, it has a population of 6,224 with most of its people speaking the Tinguian dialect.
They call this place "Lugar ti agkamkamat ti ugsa"(The place of deer hunters) because the people love exotic food and this place main dish is venison (the meat of a deer) which is very expensive if you buy it. Aside from venison they also love to eat pork - a wild boar meat. They mention that the meat of a wild boar is a bit sweeter with notes of nuttiness and a clean taste that's neither gamey nor greasy. Since Nueva Era is a place surrounded by rain forest and mountains, their main source of income and food is to hunt in the forest.
The mountains and breathe taking views. If you love to hike, if you love the sound of silence and you're a nature lover then this place is perfect for you. Its mountains is a great place for hiking and mountain climbing and its wild life is evidently rich.
Dubbed as the “Little Baguio” of Ilocos Norte but this unfamiliar spot has a charisma of its own. The VIEWDECK is a brief drive from your home, and a perfect spot for road trips.
It’s the madness of colors and sounds that makes us feel calm.
The town has more bewitching scenic attractions to offer. The Cacanan Falls, Papa Dam, Tree Park, Mine Site, and the Piaw Falls are among the ideal sites for natural love excursionists and travelers.
The People of Nueva Era
Most of the people in the municipality are engaged in farming, with rice, garlic, and tobacco as their primary products. Because of the scarce supply of irrigation in the area, tobacco has been the ideal product to produce for their own livelihood.
One-fourth of its land, which lies at the foot of the Cordillera Mountain ranges, is irrigated by several rivers such as Badoc, Padsan and Bongo.
Although, a prominently agricultural town, some of its inhabitants are also involved in small businesses.
Nueva Era Eco-Cultural Park
The town of Nueva Era in Ilocos Norte is one of the three municipalities of Ilocos Norte with tribal communities, along with Adams and Dumalneg.
With its rich culture, flourishing ambiance, and unspoiled ecological tourism, this third class municipality, has evolved into contributing in the booming tourism industry of the province.
Making its waves is the established eco-cultural park here which is now one of the most-visited sites of tourists and visitors in the eastern part of Ilocos Norte. One who visited the place must have experienced refreshing sight of ecological and tribal fusion.
The eco-park, which represents the indigenous culture of the Tingguian community here, highlights the people’s way of living which can be seen in the intricate interior of the tree huts and houses.
While visitors can relish the genuine customs and traditions of the Tingguians, they can also enjoy other recreational activities such as the hanging bridge and swimming pool. They can be further entertained by cultural dancers performing a ritual dance called “tadek.” These dancers are clad in traditional Tingguian costume to show further the identity of the ethnic group.
Tadek is a means of thanksgiving for a new couple who are believed to bring forth blessings and perseverance to the whole Tingguian community.
The Nueva Era Eco-Cultural Park and Tribal Village, features distinct traditions of the Tinguian community, from tribal huts and tree houses to tribal costumes, and to known practices such as the performance of ‘Tadek’, traditional dance of the Tingguians.
They have a little museum showcasing the Tingguian culture and at the back is a lovely setting for weddings and events, hanging bridge, and, a swimming pool for picnic-goers.
Aside from the tree houses, there are also huts and bungalows with basic but comfortable accommodation facilities including beds and an electric fan. They also have a campsite for those who want to take their adventure outdoors to a higher level.
The park also has a bonfire area or ‘dap-ayan.’ There are trails and nearby treks for those who want to hike. Plus a restaurant is in the works to serve local delicacies and Ilocano cuisines such as Bagnet, Longganisa, Poque-poque, Dinengdeng and some exotic food cooked from a “Deer” meat or locally known as “Ugsa”, that is included in the menu.
