June 9, 2023 - Day 165
Salomague, Philippines, Vigan City, Philippines
There are 7641 islands in the Philippine archipelago but we made both our two stops on Luzon. After Manila we cruised up to the port of Salomague. We were the first cruise ship to come into the port since Covid and there was a huge welcoming group dancing and the local high school band playing. There was a 1 hour bus ride over to the community of Vigan City. Vigan is the most intact example in Asia of a planned Spanish colonial town. It was established in the 16th century. It has a central plaza which has a cathedral, a archbishop’s palace, the city hall and the Provincial Capital Building. The city plan is the traditional Hispanic checkerboard street plan but there is also a Chinese and Filipino influence. There was a strong earthquake two years ago and the church and many of the buildings were being rebuilt. There are 233 historic buildings strung along a grid of 25 streets.
The country around Vigan City is rural and the people are friendly but poor. The average salary is $7 US/day and the area has really suffered from the earthquake. There are apparently some very nice beaches and sand dunes that some of the folks visited. We had lunch in Vigan City and had a delicious local Spanish sausage called a Longaniza. There were lots of pony and side car rides that were very reasonable. It is a great place to just walk around and visit the many amazing buildings.

VIGAN CITY: Reasons To Keep Coming Back
Even before being listed under the UNESCO World Convention, the famous city of Vigan has already landed a secure spot in the tourism scene of the Philippines. Being one of the best-preserved planned Spanish colonial towns in the whole of East Asia, it is a well-frequented destination thanks to the sites and wonders it beholds for its valued visitors and guests. Now that another monicker…

THE HISTORICAL AREAS OF VIGAN CITY, ILOCOS SUR
The Philippines has been a colony for 333 years, there are many places in the Philippines where the marks left by the Spanish can be seen; one of them is Vigan City, ilocus sur. There are many historical areas located here such as Calle Crisologo, Bantay Bell Tower, and Syquia Mansion. One of these is where I've been in Calle Crisologo where you can see the rows of houses from the Spanish era where the rich used to live. This is where I was most happy because we got on a carriage (kalesa) that took us around the Calle Crisologo which too several hours.

The San Simeon Let's Build Project
Better now than never, I suppose. Consider this an interest check.
Eight months ago, I started revamping the world that got me briefly Facebook-famous, San Simeon. Using a bigger, edited version of the Isla Paradiso map, I created a world with more space to build, allowing me to create street scenes with greater density and realism. My aesthetic standards had also increased in the interim, which allowed me to improve on the outward appearance of each of the buildings.
My progress was significantly fast in the first few months of the build thanks in no small part to reusing and editing lots from the smaller previous version (which will remain up, for those who prefer it). However, I realize now that this project, which consists of 120 or so lots at present, may be too much for me to handle alone, which is why I sent this open invite to help me finish and polish up the world in one of four ways:
Furnish and decorate selected existing lots
Create historically authentic families to inhabit the constructed houses
Build selected lots
Playtest the world
I had a rather inactive Discord server made for a previous Let's Build that didn't quite get off the ground. I'll be making the necessary updates there and here whenever I have the time.
If you want to join, hop on in!
Stay tuned for further updates (including a downloadable Beta version of the world you can play test).
About San Simeon
San Simeon is a sleepy island town and the administrative center and provincial capital of Nombre de Jesus, part of a colony that has been the bastion of European Civilization in the Orient. The chain lies at a fortuitous crossroads, making it an important node of trade between the great empires of East and West.
Make it big as a trader of foreign goods, rule the island as part of the landowning aristocracy, or fan the flames of revolution as the sun finally sets on the Spanish Empire.
The map represents the entirety of the fictional Philippine province of Nombre de Jesus, whose towns and cities are based loosely on prosperous colonial-era towns and cities like Manila (in particular the districts of Intramuros and Binondo), Iloilo, Taal, Silay, and Vigan. The name itself refers mainly to the capital and largest city. Lore-wise, I intended to make the world's economy geared toward coffee plantations, making it an analogue to Lipa. The time period is in the 19th century, somewhere between 1870 and 1890.
About the Project
This project began as my attempt to create a backdrop for a history-based legacy challenge that, frankly, got out of hand. At first, it was simply a conversion of Isla Paradiso with Philippine-inspired buildings, but thanks to @potato-ballad-sims became a full-on project. Let's just say I learned a lot more about Philippine history over the course of making this world and its counterpart.
One of the big challenges of this project is maintaining historical and cultural authenticity. Keeping it authentic is a big deal for me and I'm trying to keep the world as accurate as possible for one set in the 1870s through early 1900s. I've made many revisions just to keep up. While I will appreciate individual creativity, I will also provide extensive resources to help achieve the appropriate aesthetic.

i saw this picture from facebook. it is somewhere in Abra. see the beautiful mountain range? that is Sierra Nadre I was told. Picture perfect, right? I was told properties in that place are not pricey. a friend gave me some estimates and when i checked my bank account I could buy naman a decent-sized lot and build a nice house with a backyard where my dogs can run around.
Plus, from Abra I can visit places in Northern Luzon like La Union, Vigan, Pagudpud and the Cagayan areas on a road trip.
There is also the option to live in Zambales. Although my grandparents have a property in Cabangan, I think I should get my own place. The thing here is, property prices are steadily rising as Zambales is becoming more popular given it is near Metro Manila. On top of that, there is the problem of duplicate land titles used by scammers, so one must be cautious when buying.
on one side, my dear friend, fatima, decided to ditch the city and opted to relocate in Zambales. in her own words, this is her "beach life" era. Indeed, the bitch is living her best life as time does not control her as she paces her daily routine the way she sees it: morning walks by the sea, biking along scenic places, and eating fresh produce.
which now brings me to ask myself, can I now live my own life the way I really want it?
If you were to ask me, I do so want to move and start anew. I need a place by the sea if not, a farm I would settle. I don't mind planting vegetables and raising chickens for my sustenance. I would like to waste time by the beach and ride the bike around town and nearby places. I want time to slow because life is too short and I want to enjoy every moment and adventure it has to offer.

What was the last gift you received? My core group and I had our *very delayed* Christmas party last night – I got a Koya plushie from Angela and Hans + a Koya night light as well as Indigo and Wootteo keychains from Reena :)
Side note that I will only ever share here: I actually already have the exact same night light already – I had bought it from Vietnam, lol. But I was careless with the one I bought because I had constantly left it on until the battery ran out, so Reena getting it for me as a gift is nevertheless perfect :)
Ten years ago, who was your best friend? Are you still best friends now? My best friends were Sofie and Angela. I'm still extremely close with Angela – Sofie's since migrated to London but even before that we haven't really kept in touch anymore. We have an extremely low-maintenance friendship...in the way that we aren't in each other's circles, and haven't been for years, but we'll always think fondly of each other; and also in the way that if we want to have a reunion while the 3 of us happen to be in the same area at the same time, we would.
What are some of your comfort foods? Has to be some sort of noodles (I can do Korean ramyeon, Japanese ramen, Indonesian mie goreng, Filipino Pancit Canton...you name it I'll slurp it lol)...SUSHI, I also always look for sushi...and because Yabu is my favorite, my go-to is usually katsu with rice.
What's something that's very popular, that you have no interest in? The pop girls like Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan. It can be pretty exhausting encountering their names or any references to them everywhere I look. The only one I can kind of let pass is Olivia Rodrigo and that's because of her Filipino card lol
What's something that many people would consider to be lame, but you don't? Rhythm games, K-pop, studying history, pro wrestling, and being a cultural tourist over being a city/shopping tourist.
Have you ever lost your house key? I have, twice. The first time it must have really just fallen somewhere in campus because I had no idea I didn't have it on me anymore until I was right in front of my house (lol).
Second time happened just a month ago and that was a clusterfuck of me losing both my car key and house key. It's too complicated to tell the play-by-play because around 752 things happened that day in my process of trying to find both keys – but the ending is that I lost them forever, my car had to be left alone in some parking lot for 3 days, and I had to get duplicates for both keys.
How would you describe your clothing style? It's a mix of different influences, honestly. I'm not a big clothes shopper to begin with, so I just end up being a lovechild of 1) whatever my favorites are wearing at the moment, and 2) whatever's otherwise trending.
The last time you were in a line, what were you waiting for? I was at Zara getting a gift card for Hans.
What's your favorite city in your own country? Sagada :) Vigan is also great.
What's your favorite city in another country? That I've been to, probably Da Nang. As much as I dreaded going there, Fukuoka ended up being fantastic too. That I've yet to visit, Chicago.
Are there any very common foods/drinks that you pretty much never consume? Soda's a big one. People are also usually shocked, almost to the point of offense, when they find out I can skip shrimp. I love seafood, but I had shrimp so much as a kid that I grew sick of it. It tastes great and would still eat it any day any time – I just wouldn't be as enthusiastic compared to, say, if there's oysters or crab on the table as well.
I also don't really like beef! I only eat it as steak. Any other ways of cooking it...I can skip. It's pork > chicken > seafood > beef for me.
What kind of device are you taking this survey on? My laptop. I imagine it'd be pretty draining trying to take these on a phone, haha.
What's the most expensive thing you own? Uhhhh probably my phone or my work laptop.
When was the last time you had a package delivered, and what was it? I've never arranged a package for delivery, but the last time I received something was I think last Thursday when my Happy albums arrived.
Do you typically respond to text messages right away? Depends on the person. I will respond immediately to people I like. If it's something about work and if it's not urgent, it can wait.
What has been the highlight of this past month? Ending up enjoying my trip to Japan. I had been very anxious about it to the point of going quiet in the days of leading up to it, and snapping at anyone who tried to talk to me, as it was technically a work thing (albeit a company incentive, but still related to work) and knowing my nonexistent relationship with my co-workers I just didn't know how it was going to pan out.
The first day was rough as I was still trying to figure out what the dynamics were going to be...but when I soon became acquainted to the fact that they were also gonna get cliqueish over there and when I realized that I just wasn't gonna get their humor, it became a lot easier to just embrace the trip the way I personally would. If it meant I'd walk faster than they did, I went ahead. If it meant I'd go to a museum on my own because everyone else in the group thinks it's lame and boring, then I went to a museum. In other words, I let go of trying to fit in and enjoyed the rest of the ride for myself.
It also didn't help that they were quite loud wherever we went and laughed as if they were still in the Philippines heh...so I just distanced myself a little bit since I like being a quiet observer/tourist. Oh and because I was a little embarrassed, to be frank.
Has anyone ever assumed you were flirting with them, when you weren't? I don't think this has happened, no.
What types of stores do you enjoy browsing? Bookstores, shoe brands, and niche knickknacks.
Did your parents spoil you when you were a kid? We weren't rich by any means but my parents did give in to me relatively more than my siblings whenever I wanted something. I think it's part I had good grades anyway, and part I've always been the most vocal among me and my siblings and typically didn't shy away from asking for items I wanted.
Would you rather watch a movie in the theater, or at home? Cinema. I used to prefer watching them at home, but after watching around 5 movies in the cinema last year that's when I realized that I only preferred the house because I never used to go to the cinemas lol. Being in the theater is cool! The seats are comfy! The movie becomes a real-time shared experience with people! The snacks somehow taste better too!

Uwaaaa you get it! I actually planning to make my OC one of the eldest Fragaria in the continent, not in the sense of age but experience I suppose? My OC is hard worker or more appropriately workaholic which is similar to Maruri sensei! Myuuna first meeting with my OC is quite memorable because precious boy thought a ghost visit him but he quickly warmed up to my OC because of how friendly she is. Similar to Cielomort, she also took serious about the whole getting along matter, that's why she established trading with other countries. And about the teasing, yes, it did happen. As we know, Merold and Hangyon is very much someone who enjoy teasing and my OC just happen to be perfect target. They made numerous attempt to take a peek of her face but there's always something that didn't let them do so. Also, I just realized that my OC share similarity to Maruri sensei in the sense of she is actually very scary when she angry but she is hard to get angry and I can't help but think the same for Maruri sensei! Also, also if it's not a problem, may I know how you envision the town under Lord Hanamaruobake? Other than the forest, what about the house? In my case, I imagine the country to be like Kyoto in Japan or more specifically the country fill with traditional houses of Japan.
P/s: I suddenly imagine Maruri sensei give sticker to Tuxam after Noir Bouquet Ep 2, when he learn his mistake. It will be so cute.
- 🌸 anon
Your oc seems like they're always on the receiving end of all the teasing huh ( ・ั﹏・ั). I'm glad Myunna warmed up to her though, I mean who wouldn't want to be friends with the bby?
With regards to how Maruri is when she's angry...
I like to think that her anger is horrifying because it is silent. Maruri is so patient and understanding, it's hard to get her to be angry. Or at least, that seems to be the case.
But that's a lore drop for another day so 🫢🤫
And for Hanamaruobake's Kingdom...
I worked on the kingdom's culture first before I thought of the other details. So it really influenced how I envisioned the kingdom's architecture and such.
That's why I decided to draw inspiration from my own home country and base Marumaru's Kingdom on Vigan City in the Philippines!
It truly fits the vibe I had thought for Maruri. I could just imagine her strolling through the streets in that setting.
And for Maruri's reaction to Tuxam's growth...
Once Tuxam shares all that had happened to Maruri, she'd definitely be so proud of her junior! She's so happy that he earned a friend like Arupek, so much so that she gave both juniors some stickers! Arupek would've immediately placed it on his water gun, but Tuxam would keep the stickers safe until he returns home and finds a proper place to put them on.

A Step Back In Time ⏱
EP 8 🎬
It’s been a year ago since we went to my first longest trip to the north, the provinces of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte. These two provinces were located in Ilocos Region which is in the northern part of Luzon. Ilocos is best known for its historical and cultural sites that is really worth exploring. Our journey began with a scenic drive from Calamba Laguna to Ilocos Norte, as we made our way through the countryside, the lush greenery and picturesque landscapes served as a reminder of the beauty of nature. The long drive was made enjoyable with music and laughter, Our first destination was Laoag City and it was also where our accommodation located. Continuing our journey, we ventured to the Kapurpurawan Beach to see some of the windmills but sadly, we could not able to see them clearly, especially in Bangui, because it was raining heavily and the wind was so strong at the time we went.
No trip to Ilocos Norte would be complete without visiting the iconic Paoay Church, also known as the St. Augustine Church. This magnificent structure, built in the 17th century, showcased exquisite baroque architecture and stood as a testament to the rich history of the region. Visiting Vigan is a unique and unforgettable experience. This charming Spanish colonial town, located in the northern Philippines, features beautiful cobbled streets and authentic architecture that transports visitors back in time. Throughout the city, there are many museums, churches, and antique shops to explore. The highlight of our Vigan visit is the Raniag Festival Float Parade and their famous Empanada filled with grated green papaya, ilocos longganisa and egg.
Our trip to Ilocos Norte was an experience that will forever hold a special place in our hearts. From the historical landmarks to the breathtaking natural wonders and the warmth and hospitality of the locals, every aspect of our journey was a testament to the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of this extraordinary province. Ilocos Norte taught us the importance of exploring and appreciating our own country, as it holds treasures that are waiting to be discovered and celebrated.

Credits to TripadvisorBaluarte

Credits to Arinaya White Beach Resort
Credits to Wikipedia

i swore to the pebbles settling beneath the waters, skies that needed pigments, meadow that skips the dearth of blossoms, endless deep chasm and sounds of crackling obscure whispers — that expectations comes with great disappointment. needless to say, i shouldn't feel sorry and be a burden like a rock stucked in the wayfarer's road, rogue fleece in a zipper of a comforting jacket, bewildered compass, or water in valleys going to an oblivion and how i questioned myself what went wrong. that feels wrong. no. it is so wrong.
