Paper Talk: Edu, Arsenal in race against time after leapfrogging Tottenham, Chelsea to signing; Everton eye Prem star
Tumblr media
Arsenal are ahead of Tottenham and Chelsea in the transfer battle to sign a Serie A star, while Everton ponder a January raid on Newcastle – both in all the latest Paper Talk.
ARSENAL IN INSIGNE TRANSFER RACE
Napoli winger Lorenzo Insigne has interest from Arsenal as well as Tottenham and Chelsea, according to a report. The 30-year-old has remained a stoic figure at his Serie A employers since rising through the youth ranks. Indeed, he has made 405 appearances there and is the captain. However, reports in recent weeks have revealed that his time in Naples could be coming to an end. He is into the final year of his latest contract, but has yet to extend. As such, links with a move to Tottenham and Everton initially emerged for Insigne. Chelsea have subsequently been named as potential suitors for the 111-goal Napoli star’s free transfer next summer. According to the latest from Corrierre dello Sport (via Sport Witness), though, Arsenal – led by recruitment chief Edu – are well in the race for Insigne. In fact, the Gunners are reportedly ‘ahead of the others’ with their interest. Nevertheless, they are in a race against time to convince the player to move on, as he could yet sign a new contract. The renewal is ‘not so far away’ after Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis met Insigne’s agent. In that meeting, the chief offered a new five-year contract worth €5million (£4.2million) per season, and it remains to be seen if Insigne will accept. As well as being a star for his club, Insigne has 49 Italy caps, scoring 10 goals. He netted two of those to help his country win Euro 2020. Barcelona’s struggles to appoint Xavi could open door to two other potential Koeman successors
AND THE REST FROM PAPER TALK

Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff is a likely January transfer target for Everton manager Rafael Benitez. (The Independent) Paul Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola is trying to convince the Manchester United midfielder to move to Real Madrid, but Paris Saint-Germain remain in the hunt. (El Nacional) Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has admitted that he expected more from midfielder Kai Havertz. (The Sun) Timo Werner is also under pressure at Stamford Bridge and faces a fight for his future following Romelu Lukaku’s arrival. (Evening Standard) Man Utd centre-back Axel Tuanzebe hopes to turn his latest loan move to Aston Villa into a permanent deal. (Birmingham Mail)
ENGLAND SQUAD REACTION
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hit back at Gareth Southgate over the England boss’ comments on United winger Jadon Sancho’s call-up snub. (ESPN) But Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Rose has hailed the “very smart decision” not to call up Jude Bellingham. (Daily Mirror) Solskjaer also feels happy that Mason Greenwood will not be part of the international break and can focus on his club development. (Manchester Evening News) Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists that he has respect for Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola, despite annoying the Spaniard. (The Independent)
GUARDIOLA MAKES STERLING, CITY TRUCE
Tumblr media
Guardiola has made an “uneasy truce” with City star Raheem Sterling, but the England forward still faces an uncertain future. (Daily Telegraph) Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has set the record straight following Bernd Leno’s reaction to his recent goalkeeping snub. (Daily Express) Leno’s future has subsequently grown more uncertain following his comments and Arsenal could try to sign Brentford’s David Raya as his successor. (Daily Star) Martin Keown believes that Man Utd need to bring a “fear factor” back to visiting teams at Old Trafford. (Daily Mail) Thierry Henry has labelled his former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger’s plan for a World Cup every two years “mentally exhausting”. (The Sun) Read the full article

Premier League manager wages as Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool salaries emerge
Tumblr media
5) Brendan Rodgers, Leicester
Brendan Rodgers has enjoyed much success with Leicester and committed his long-term future to the Foxes in December 2019 by signing a deal until 2025.
The bumper deal is understood to have doubled Rodgers’ wages, taking his earnings from £5m per year to an annual wage of £10m.
4) Carlo Ancelotti, Everton
It is unsurprising that a former Real Madrid manager earns one of the highest salaries in the league.
Sportekz claim Carlo Ancelotti’s salary is £11m per annum, while the Sun have reported Ancelotti’s deal is worth up to £14m over the course of a season.
His current deal expires in 2024, but the Italian revealed in February that he is keen to stay at Goodison Park.
3) Jose Mourinho, Tottenham
While he is regarded as a top manager, Mourinho was also appointed by Spurs because of his box-office appeal.
That is reflected in his wages, with the Daily Mail claiming the Portuguese boss earns a £15million-a-year, with a huge weekly wage of a £313,000.
2) Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool
Klopp led Liverpool to the Champions League and Premier League titles in successive seasons and that success was rewarded in his latest contract.
The deal he signed in December 2019 will see him stay at Anfield until 2024, earning £16m annually in the process.
1) Pep Guardiola, Manchester City
Manchester City boss Guardiola signed a two-year contract extension in November 2020, which will see him stay at the Etihad for longer than any of his previous clubs.
The Catalan is reported to earn at least £20m per year, which places him far ahead of any of his Premier League rivals in the wage standings.

Tottenham Hotspur have launched an offer for Bayern Munich wonderkid Taylor Booth, according to Football Insider. Tottenham are trying to prise the teenager away from the Allianz Arena in the summer, despite the fact he has two years remaining on his current contract. A source close to the situation told the outlet Spurs are prepared to hand the prospect a lucrative professional contract. The Daily Mail recently reported the 18-year-old impressed backroom staff with his performance against the Lilywhites in the UEFA Youth League last year. Booth signed for Bayern back in January 2019, but has grown frustrated with the lack of opportunities in Hans-Dieter Flick’s senior squad, and Spurs have already made the first move. Consequently, this latest development could be bad news for Harry Winks. Ever since he arrived at the Bundesliga champions in 2019, the American has been tipped for greatness, after he put in an impressive performance as Bayern’s Under-19s thrashed Tottenham 3-0 back in December, finishing the game with a tally of two assists. Moreover, the holding midfielder has been capped by USA at all levels up to his age group. He has also regularly featured in the German youth league, creating 3 assists in 11 games so far (Transfermarkt). On the other hand, Winks has arguably struggled for consistency up until now. Remarkably, the 24-year-old is still yet to score or create an assist in all competitions at the time of writing. Indeed, the Englishman has failed to register a single goal or assist in the Premier League this season, taking a mere 0.4 shots per game, averaging under one clearance, although he has made 1.3 tackles on average in the English top flight (WhoScored). Daniel Levy is set to try to lure Booth away with an offer the club feels he won’t be able to resist. As it stands, the whizzkid is unsure about his future at the German giants, as Die Roten are on course to claim another league title after beating rivals Borussia Dortmund earlier this week. Spurs have a history of developing young players into world-class talents, with the club churning out the likes of Harry Kane and Gareth Bale in recent years. If Booth moves to England in the upcoming transfer window, it is Winks who could miss out on a place in the squad in the future, as he has been unable to shield the defence over the course of the campaign. Furthermore, Daniel Levy splashed the cash to sign Tanguy Ndombele, so it is unlikely the chairman would be willing for the club’s record signing to make room for the American teen in the squad. Giovani Lo Celso has also received a higher rating than his English counterpart via WhoScored. Mourinho has certainly given the England international plenty of chances, but he has largely failed to live up to expectations so far, and he stands to lose the most if Booth joins the North London club. Tottenham fans, do you think Daniel Levy should sign Taylor Booth in the summer? Let us know down below! "We will never win anything" - Many Spurs fans blast "total liability" who is "conning a living"
Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been left reeling by the club’s latest decision to end their pursuit of a new goalkeeper.
Over the past few months, the north London outfit have been linked to Ajax stopper Andre Onana following a below-par and injury-hit campaign from skipper Hugo Lloris.
The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?
World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%
But now they have their reservations over the Cameroon international, according to De Telegraaf, who further claim that Spurs are set to stick with their Frenchman for next season instead.
The Daily Mail suggested that Onana would cost teams between £40m and £50m, which is why some fans believe there is more at play here, particularly due to Daniel Levy’s tight financial control of the club.
Lloris has played only 18 matches this term but has dropped several clangers, such as being beaten at his near post against both Chelsea and RB Leipzig whilst also handing Aston Villa an easy goal. Not to mention his injury against Brighton being the result of another blunder.
Here’s how fans have been reacting to the news…

Transfer Talk: Juve's Dybala linked with swap for Barca's Dembele
Tumblr media
The January transfer window may seem like a distant memory, but that doesn’t mean the rumour mill has shut down! Speculation over summer moves is heating up, so check out the latest gossip below, and see all official deals here.
TOP STORY: Juve’s Dybala linked with swap for Barca’s Dembele
Juventus‘ Paulo Dybala and Barcelona‘s Ousmane Dembele have been linked with a swap as both players’ contracts come to an end in 2022, according to Calciomercato.
– Insider Notebook: Haaland fee set at €180m – UEFA WC qualifiers on ESPN+: Stream games, replays (U.S. only) – Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)
Dembele, 23, has definitely made an improvement on his previous campaigns in a Barcelona shirt, contributing nine goals and four assists in all competitions this term.
However, the aforementioned contract situation does mean he could still depart Camp Nou, due to Barcelona’s delicate financial position meaning. The club is especially wary of losing the winger for free after signing him for €105 million plus €40m in add-ons from Borussia Dortmund.
This comes despite club president Joan Laporta saying that he’s a fan of Dembele and stating that he is looking into a contract renewal.
Dybala, 27, has previously been linked with a swap deal to Barcelona — for Dembele’s teammate Antoine Griezmann. Dybala has also been mentioned to go to Paris Saint-Germain for Mauro Icardi.
There is a feeling at Juventus that Dembele is worth investing in — even if they lose Dybala — especially due to Dembele’s age.
PAPER GOSSIP
– Real Madrid are in a good position to sign David Alaba, but AS have suggested that Los Blancos are making backup plans in case they miss out. The report states that Sevilla FC‘s Jules Kounde, Villarreal‘s Pau Torres and Napoli‘s Kalidou Koulibaly are on the club’s list. They could also potentially turn to Jesus Vallejo, who is on loan to Granada — something that would save money in a tough financial climate.
– Following Monday’s announcement that Sergio Aguero will be leaving Manchester City in the summer, the Daily Mail has compiled a list of players who could replace the Argentine talisman. The first name is Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, who is said to be the main priority. City are also eyeing Tottenham Hotspur‘s Harry Kane and Southampton‘s Danny Ings. There is also interest in Barcelona great Lionel Messi, Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe and Internazionale frontman Romelu Lukaku.
As for Aguero, sources have told ESPN’s Mark Ogden that he is drawing interest from Juventus, Barcelona and PSG after ruling out a return to boyhood club Independiente.
– AC Milan are considering Lorient‘s Armand Lauriente to replace Alexis Saelemaekers, according to Calciomercato. The Italian giants have been looking at other Ligue 1 talent to fill that position, with Lille‘s Jonathan Ikone another option.
– Aston Villa have joined the race to sign AFC Bournemouth starlet Ajani Burchall, according to Football Insider. Arsenal, West Ham United and Leeds United are said to have already been looking at the 16-year-old attacker who hails from Bermuda.

The winter transfer window is closed, but now it’s time to look ahead to the summer! Here are the new rumours floating around Europe’s big leagues and beyond.
TOP STORY: Barca want €45m for right-back Semedo
Barcelona have slapped a €45 million price tag on their Portuguese right-back Nelson Semedo, according to Sport.

The Catalans were keen to keep hold of the defender last summer but are reluctant to enter talks about an extension to his current deal, insisting they have other priorities. Semedo’s contract is due to run out in 2022 and Barca are keen to avoid a repeat of last summer, when the player tried to force an exit amid interest from Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Manchester City.
Semedo wants a bigger role at the club but Barca have stalled talks, all of which have got agent Jorge Mendes primed and ready to find his client a new club.
Juve and Manchester City are both said to still be interested, and both might consider a swap deal to ease the fee. Inter Milan and Tottenham are also said to be keen, according to the report.

Inter target David to replace Martinez
Lautaro Martinez is expected to leave Inter Milan when the transfer window reopens, and his move to Barcelona goes ahead as expected, the Nerazzurri are hoping to replace him with Jonathan David.
That’s the rumour according to Mundo Deportivo, which believes the 20-year-old Canadian is the man Antonio Conte wants to lead Inter’s new-look attack next season.

• When does the transfer window reopen? • Karlsen: Possible coronavirus impact • Best ever transfers: 100-51 | 50-1 • This summer’s top free agents • January transfer grades • Latest completed major transfers
David is currently playing for Gent in Belgium, for whom he has scored 18 goals and registered eight assists in the Belgian league this season.
Quick, powerful and versatile considering, David would cost somewhere between €15m-25m, his price now potentially cheaper than it perhaps might have been before the coronavirus.
Inter are believed to have made contact with Gent.
Leonardo turns attentions to Pellegrini
Leonardo has often found joy in transfers from Serie A — think Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva, for example — and tonight Footmercato are reporting that PSG want Lorenzo Pellegrini from AS Roma.
Pellegrini has been a long-term target for the French giants, and Leonardo is reported to be in regular contact with the 23-year-old Italy international.
Pellegrini’s contract ends in 2022 and he has a release clause of €30m, a sum which could change depending on where Roma finish in the Serie A table if and when the season resumes. The Giallorossi are currently fifth.
Pellegrini has played 18 times in the league this season, and in four of the six Europa League matches, scoring three goals and adding 12 assists in all competitions.
Tap-ins
— Good news for all clubs monitoring Harry Kane who don’t have the words ‘Manchester’ and United’ in their name, for it would appear the Red Devils are ruling themselves out of a mega £200m capture this summer, says the Daily Mail. Ed Woodward has ruled out any huge spending when the transfer window opens and instead, he believes the coronavirus will have a huge impact on transfer fees. He insisted the figures that have been suggested for both Kane and Jadon Sancho are wildly unrealistic.
— Calciomercato is reporting that Paris Saint-Germain have submitted an offer to Manchester United for midfielder Paul Pogba, and have even offered Angel Di Maria and Julian Draxler in exchange for the Frenchman’s services. This would seem unlikely given Di Maria didn’t appear to enjoy his first stint in Manchester, but nevertheless the Italian outlet is suggesting that PSG are keen to sign the 27-year-old World Cup winner because they see him as the missing link when it comes to winning the Champions League.

Sampdoria could look to terminate Harry Winks‘ loan deal during the January transfer window, with the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder yet to make his debut for the Serie A side, according to a report from Ita Sport Press. Winks left Spurs right at the end of the summer. The 26-year-old had failed to move his way up the pecking order under Antonio Conte. And the arrival of Yves Bissouma only added…

Real Madrid are reported to have pulled out of the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane this summer amid concerns over the cost of the deal. Los Blancos have been tipped by many in the English media to launch a £200m bid for Kane, but reports in Spain have always suggested that the focus is on Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappé and Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland. However, talk of a potential switch to the Santiago Bernabéu could be coming to an end as the Daily Mail state...
