Emmys: 'SNL' Hosts Dave Chappelle, Melissa McCarthy Wins Guest Acting Awards

Emmys: 'SNL' Hosts Dave Chappelle, Melissa McCarthy Wins Guest Acting Awards
6:02 PM PDT 9/10/2017 by Arlene Washington , Kimberly Nordyke
Meanwhile, Alexis Bledel and Gerald McRaney won the guest acting awards in the drmaa series categories.
Dave Chappelle and Melissa McCarthy won best guest actor and actress in a comedy series Emmys for hosting Saturday Night Live.
Also at the Creative Arts Awards on Sunday night, Alexis Bledel won best guest actress in a drama series for The Handmaid’s Tale, while Gerald McRaney won best actor in a drama for This Is Us.
McCarthy also notably portrayed now-former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on the show on several occasions, winning raves for her impersonation.
She brought out the character for her May 13 hosting gig, which marked her fifth time hosting the show. As Spicer, she poked fun at the firing of FBI director James Comey and Spicer’s alleged hiding behind a bush during the ensuing press conference.
Aidy Bryant stepped to the press podium as Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Spicer’s stand-in, where she stated she did not know where Spicer was. A reporter then noted that he was “hiding in the bushes” outside the window — and there was McCarthy, peering through the glass.
Before the press conference could continue under Bryant, McCarthy crashed through the window, blasting the press pool with a fire extinguisher, to take over the conference.
First, she was asked about Trump’s mental state. “If he’s crazy, he’s crazy like a fox with mental problems,” McCarthy replied.
A reporter from the pool then asked McCarthy about the hot topic: Russian collusion. “Let me just put this whole Russian thing to bed once and for all: Trump is innocent,” Spicer replied. “How do I know? He told me so. He hired lawyers to agree with him.” (Read more here.)
Spicer, who recently exited his role in the Trump administration, has admitted he found parts of her impression funny: “I’m a prankster, so I like a good joke. I think when it’s funny, it’s funny. You gotta laugh at yourself … I think there were a couple parts of [SNL] that were funny,” he told Sean Hannity.
McCarthy also was vying against another SNL host, Kristen Wiig, along with Wanda Sykes for black-ish, the late Carrie Fisher for Catastrophe, Becky Ann Baker for Girls and Angela Bassett for Master of None.
Chappelle also was nominated in the category alongside another SNL host, Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with Riz Ahmed and Matthew Rhys for Girls.
Chappelle made his Saturday Night Live hosting debut on Nov. 12 for its first episode since the presidential election results came in.
In a stand-up set as his monologue, Chappelle addressed Donald Trump’s election victory, saying, “I didn’t know that Donald Trump was gonna win the election, but I did suspect it.”
He continued, “Hillary was ahead in the polls, and yet I know the whites. You guys aren’t as full of surprises as you used to be.
“America’s done it — we’ve actually elected an internet troll as our president,” Chappelle joked. (Read more here.)
Neither Chappelle nor McCarthy were present at Sunday’s Creative Arts Emmys ceremony in Los Angeles to accept their awards.
This is Chappelle’s first Emmy win and the second for McCarthy, who nabbed best actress in a comedy series in 2011 for her role in Mike & Molly.
The 42-year-old sketch show is coming off a huge year as it took advantage of the election and Trump presidency to draw an average of 11 million weekly viewers to see a slew of impersonators; in addition to McCarthy, Kate McKinnon portrayed Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway and Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Beck Bennett as Vice President Mike Pence and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
It also set a high bar this year at the Emmys with 22 nominations, which makes a total of 231 nominations since it premiered.
Meanwhile, this is the first nomination and first win for both McRaney and Bledel. He won for his portrayal of kindly Dr. Nathan Katowski, who delivered Jack and Rebecca’s babies, on This Is Us. Bledel was recognized for playing Ofglen in the dystopian drama Handmaid’s Tale.
