柔道 (Judo)Seoi nage (背負い投げ?) is a shoulder throw, one of the traditional forty throws of Judo as developed by Jigoro Kano. It belongs to the first group, Dai Ikkyo, of the traditional throwing list, Gokyo (no waza), of Kodokan Judo. It is also part of the current 67 Throws of Kodokan Judo. It is classified as a hand technique, Te-Waza.

The specific techniques of morote-seoi-nage (two hands seoi-nage) or eri-seoi are generally called seoi-nage. The distinctive technical aspect of this classification is that tori (the one executing the technique) grips with his two hands[1] as opposed to Ippon Seoi Nage in which only one hand remains gripping while the other slides under uke's (the one receiving the technique) armpit. Seoi nage is one of the highest-scoring techniques in Judo.[2] Renown seoinage martial artists are Isao Okano and Toshihiko Koga.

Shohei Ono inspires images of flawlessly executed big throws--uchimatas, THAT slow-mo Hane goshi, and osotogaris. So it is quite a rarity to see him being whipped onto the tatami more than once by none other than the legendary Toshihiko Koga.

(How did a white belt judoka get to spar with a legend again? Did he train at Koga's academy?)

I think this video clip is more inspiring than the championship winning throws that Ono is famous for. This clip gives all whiteys hope.

Olympic- & 3-times World- Champion dies at the age of only 53. Cause of dead was not communicated, but last year he had been (shortly) hospitalized for kidney cancer. RIP.

Former Olympic judo champion Toshihiko Koga dies at 53

Toshihiko Koga, a Japanese Olympic judo champion at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, has died, people close to him said Wednesday. He was 53.

Koga won the gold medal in the men’s 71-kg category at the Barcelona Games.

The cause of death was unknown, but NHK said Koga had been treated for cancer last year.

Since Chikao is the older twin, he usually felt the need to protect Chihiro, leading him to take judo lessons and eventually earn his Ultimate title.

I’m gonna be an expert on jūdō by the time I’m finished translating this story lol

But anyway I’m doing research and one of the characters, Koga Ayumi, was named after Koga Toshihiko, a real-life jūdōka who was an Olympic champion. He attained the rank of hachidan (eighth dan, or eight-grade black belt) before retiring, and he was promoted to kudan the day before he died of cancer earlier this year. And idk I just think it’s really nice that he wasn’t promoted posthumously? He got to have the rank of kudan for one day while he was still alive

And though her given name’s spelled differently (あゆみ rather than 歩美), another of her namesakes may have been Tanimoto Ayumi, a student of Koga Toshihiko’s who is an Olympic gold medalist
