Junot's facial injury and Napoleon's insults regarding it, as narrated by Junot's son

'It is known that my father was riddled with wounds. One of those which was, without question, the cause of the fatal illness in consequence of which he succumbed, was the bullet which he received above the nose, at the lines of Torres Vedras. To extract the bullet, it was necessary to open the cheek above the maxillary bone; this scar, together with that of the wound itself, had greatly disturbed the harmony of the lines of his face.*

The Emperor, who had been displeased with the fine convention of Cintra only because it was a capitulation, and the word tickled him unpleasantly, manifested to my father a marked ill-humour. At the circle, one day, he said aloud to him: "My God, Junot, how ugly this wound has made you!"

My father made no answer the first time; but, when he returned home, he wept bitterly over these harsh words spoken by him whom he loved so much! He didn't even tell my mother about it.

To the next circle, the same compliment from the Emperor, and as one may imagine, even more acute grief on the part of my poor father. This time only did he not have the strength to keep her to himself, and he poured out his sorrow in my mother's bosom. She was indignant, at this injustice on the part of the Emperor, and she advised my father with all her strength to answer something if the attack was renewed. This was not lacking; for the third time my father was greeted with an exclamation at his ugliness occasioned by the wound of which I have spoken. "I am sorry that I am not of the same opinion as the Emperor," said my father respectfully; "but I had thought that this wound must have beautified me, since I had had the happiness of receiving it in your Majesty's service." Napoleon made a little grimace and moved on to another, who probably paid for the damage.'

Okay, I just remembered I forgot to tell y'all why I got a little sad yesterday (I know nobody cares, but I like to write my thoughts and feelings into the void, aka, Tumblr).

So, I live near the university campus, in Braga, which is like 30/40 minutes by car away from my hometown. When my dad came to pick me up from the train in Lisbon, he asked whether I had talked to my mom on my birthday. And I was like "yeah, we texted and she told me to call her once we got home and etc etc". Anyways, he said "Did she come by to Braga to kiss you today?" - mind you, I turned 20 yesterday.

And to me, that was something I didn't even consider. I knew my mom wouldn't come because...well home reasons. But that reminded when my dad came all the way from Torres Vedras (3h by car away from my hometown) to spend sometime with me on my 18th birthday...

Which, I know my mom doesn't have to do nothing of the sorts...but it reminded me that she usually never puts a lot of effort into my birthdays.

I'm sorry for my first world problem rant (I swear, last year I was down so bad because I was sad I wasn't going to get a birthday cake and I was feeling so shitty because THAT was my biggest complaint when there's people in way worse situations), it's just that for this birthday I didn't have any expectations (which made things sooo much better for me) and when my dad said that to me it clicked something on my brain
