I'm curious - what do you think or familiar with Strawberry Fields Forever in the mclennon lore? Is there any thought or idea that Strawberry Fields is about Paul?
Hi there, anon, and thanks for asking. I think that Strawberry Fields, like most pieces of art, is about many things, and primarily it's about John reflecting on himself, and memories, and his sense of isolation at the time.
But it's a Lennon/McCartney song, and we know they agreed early on that even songs written by either of them alone were to be credited to both of them, because their mutual influence and shared history were so deep. So, in that sense...It's written with Paul, and with Paul in mind.
But is John singing to Paul when he says, "let me take you down?" George Martin seems to imply he did. In one of his memoirs, he juxtaposed pictures of John and Paul, and captioned them: No One I Think Is In My Tree...Except Perhaps Me (x).
And there's the video, of course, with Woodland Sprite Paul climbing John's tree. Expression of the lyrics' meaning, or an instance of calculated myth-making? Both?
In the original lyrics of Strawberry Fields, John is writing there's no woman in my wavelength, and then replaces no woman with no one. Does it mean anything? There's no woman, no one — no one but you Paul, so let me take you down? Not necessarily. Not in the lyrics.
But later on, that appears to have become one meaning they wanted to give to the song. No one I think is in my tree [but we see Paul]
Always, no sometimes, think it's me [and when it's not me, it's Paul].
Not that the difference between you and me matters when it comes to the two of them...oh wait, we're myth-making again. :-)
@s-l-martin, @tavolgisvist and @i-am-the-oyster are song analysis buffs that can help you better than I can, anon. Or anyone else who wants to chime in...

John Lennon still very young in front of the Strawberry Fields Orphanage in Liverpool, England. The Orphanage, frequented by Lennon during his childhood, was the inspiration for one of the most beautiful songs ever made. Strawberry Fields Forever was composed by John while he was in Spain in 1966 and released together with Penny Lane in February 1967. The songs were later included on the Magical Mystery Tour album, released in November of the same year.
