The sinking of Lusitania in 1915 was considered the spark that drew the United States into WWI. The British ship leaned so far starboard that most of the lifeboats were useless and in 18 minutes she was gone, taking 1200 innocent passengers with her.

1974 ad for Dinky Toys.
Model 291 - Atlantean City Bus. This was the Leyland Atlantean double-decker bus. Get on board!
Model 675 - Motor Patrol Boat. Appears to be the Royal Navy Brave Class motor torpedo boat. The RN only had two (HMS Brave Borderer and HMS Brave Swordsman) and both had retired by 1970 but others were built for the export market.
Model 692 - Leopard Tank. This was the German Leopard l tank that came into service in the 1960's.

#OTD in 1899 – Creation of the Electric Boat Company by the father of the modern submarine, John Philip Holland.
Holland emigrated to the US in 1873. Holland’s first submarine submission was rejected by the Navy Secretary as ‘a fantastic scheme of a civilian landsman’. The navy eventually relented and purchased it’s first submarine from Holland’s company in 1900 for $150,000. Holland also had a strong interest in aviation writing a paper in 1891 titled ‘The Practicality of Manned Flight’. He is buried in…

Type VIIC U-boat, U-363 at the Battle of Narvik in WWII. I watched a documentary on YouTube about this battle and I must say the pitiful story of this U-boat's time there was crazy. The captain tried again and again to attack the British warships (tincans and HMS Warspite) but EVERY torpedo he fired just didn't work! And we are talking quite a few attempts here! In fact, if his torpedoes had functioned correctly he would have inflicted some serious damage upon the British forces. The documentary mentioned the captains radio messages back to fleet HQ basically screaming that someone should pay dearly for issuing worthless torpedos to a ship at war. I don't know exactly what the man said, but for him to make a special trip out away from Narvik and risk a radio transmission during an ongoing operation, I imagine he was completely enraged. Poor fellow. Ended the battle in surrender I understand. U-363 taken by the Royal Navy.
