Here’s a name in electronics that brings us back - #Yorx. Though they are mostly remembered now for manufacturing mid to low-end products, things didn’t start that way. Founded in 1972 in Totowa, New Jersey, Yorx made a splash on the scene with its Space Saver system, an innovative compact #stereo system meant to compete with the big cabinet-sized units that were common at the time. Though the Space Saver was a hit (and anything but low-end), some questionable business decisions led Yorx to shift towards producing generic, mid priced knock-offs until they were bought out by the Dutch company Hagemeyer NV in 1994. From here the quality of goods continued to decline until they were sold again in 2004 to the company GPX, finally putting the nail in the coffin for the Yorx brand. Part 2 of 2. After pouring the molten copper into the mould and quenching it in water we have the fruits of our labour, a 120x75x35mm (roughly 5x3x1.5 inches) #ingot. Though it’s not very large it is surprisingly heavy, weighing an impressive 3 kilograms (6.5 pounds), and though It’s a little dull looking right now we will see if we can get it polished to a mirror finish. Part 1 of 2. #Ewaste and computer recycling is a big part of what we do and sometimes we like to have some fun and get a little more “hands-on” in the process - so we decided to #smelt some copper! The first step was to gather the scrap copper from heat sinks, wires, pipes, and conducting plates from transformers and UPSs. Next we placed the copper in our trusty little blast furnace and heated it up to the melting point of 1,085 degrees Celsius, and once the metal was molten we poured it into a mold and quenched it in water, leaving us a nice copper #ingot.
