Wednesday, September 11: Accept, "Bloodbath Mastermind"

Blind Rage was positioned as a return to the direct attack of Blood of the Nations, versus the slightly more diverse approach of the preceding Stalingrad, and to some extent it accomplished its goal of furthering positioning the reconstituted Accept as a viable working entity.  The flipside is that the record indicated that Wolf Hoffman was not only willing but eager to stay in place and revert to formula, as every subsequent Accept album would aim to sound exactly like this, to diminishing returns.  But the recipe hadn’t calcified just yet, and “Bloodbath Mastermind” was a bit more spacious and open even with its extremely metal title.  Mark Tornillo sounded more confident and ready to layer in more of his own vocal style, having sufficiently proven himself as a more than adequate replacement for Udo Dirkschneider, and both the riffing and rhythm section played with an assured focus.  There was even a touch of ambition to the track, with its soft intro easing into something more aggressive as opposed to simply bashing.  “Bloodbath Mastermind” was this version of Accept firing on all cylinders, and not insignificantly sounding like a proper band since everyone was in lockstep.
