"Absent Friends", the cancelled Torchwood audiodrama that would've seen David Tennant as the Doctor, has had it's script leak. Part of it, at least, and I'm not linking to it because you can find it yourself if it really interests you.

Only reason I bring it up is because it's sorta wild that it even happened. Doctor Who is very well known for it's missing episodes, but the chances of anything resurfacing gets slimmer the longer something would take to appear. The fact that anything has been revealed to publicly exist is surprising to me.

Thanks for tagging me @not-so-casually-obsessed! I don't speak to anyone here and I haven't done one of these before so this is a delight and sorry it took me so long to do it.

Last movie: The Truman Show (was so shocked to find out this wasn't a TV show I had to watch it and you know what, it was quite good)

we sort of get a glimpse of ianto’ s reaction to being brought back to life in “the house of the dead”; both in the series and in the bf audiodrama ianto is very well aware of the the possibility of dying at a young age so it leads me to believe that the reason why he’ d get angry at jack is for saving him. to be more specific, i think ianto would get angry because being saved, being alive, means going through the pain of eventually losing jack or being forgotten by him.

in the series ianto dies in the arms of a man he’ s sure won’ t remember him and in “the house of the dead” he chooses to leave that same man even though he has a second chance; in my opinion ianto would be pissed at him because he loves him too much — unlike with lisa, ianto isn’ t blinded by love, on the contrary, he wants to have a clear image of the man he has feelings for but jack is too much: has too many secrets, too many pasts and too many lives he won’ t share with anyone and love isn’ t enough when there is no trust. ianto simply can’ t be with jack because they are opposite and meanwhile jack is passionate and reckless ianto “has learnt his lesson” and has become more careful, more attentive we might say ?

jack loves ianto in a way ianto doesn’ t want to be loved and that’ s the thing about them: if brought back to life ianto would have to start anew carrying with him those same doubts and fears he had until his last breath and despite jack’ s love and will he’ d never be able to reassure ianto because he just can’ t. what if jack would eventually forget about ianto? what if isnto hated jack for things he’ s done in the past? what if the “new”, torchwood, jack isn’ t enough to make up for his errors and mistakes?

however, a tiny part of me wants to believe that if given the chance they’ d communicate for once and try to make things actually work out; jack forgave ianto for bringing an half-converted cyberwoman in torchwood’ s basement and ianto forgave jack for going to the house of the dead just to see him (these are the first two events i came up with) so, if even this kind of betrayal and pain isn’t enough to break them and their bounds i am sure nothing can.

So, many years ago I wrote a story where future Jack went back to see past Ianto because he was basically closing a time loop. And he missed him. In the process he decided to save Ianto from Thames House and brought him to the future.

And Ianto was pissed.

The save and the future wasn't part of the story though. They had to then go back and Retcon themselves so they didn't remember the visits until it was time to remember - again, casual time loop.

I am sort of intrigued by the idea of future Jack saving Ianto but Ianto absolutely flipping out, angry and upset and so very lost. We all assume the happily ever afters set in the future are exactly that - happy. But what if it took Ianto a while to forgive Jack for what happened at Thames House? What if he couldn't deal with dying and coming back to life in the future? What then? What would he do, and when would he come around? Because of course he would, eventually. But maybe it takes a while to get to happily ever after. This is Janto, after all.

(I also wrote a story where the future save went much better. That save made more sense too. But what if it hadn't gone well??)

So I'm intrigued. I'm on fall break so maybe I'll try sketching out some ideas. My Briticisms will be way off if I give it a go, but maybe after ten+years of writing for British fandoms it will come back fast. Because I think there could be a story in there. We shall see!

I just listened to “The Last Beacon” and that was E V E R Y T H I N G that I hoped it would be. I think my only regret here is not being able to see their faces and body language throughout all of this (so much vid and gif fodder, so much), but on the other hand it was written by Gareth David-Lloyd and thus we now know that GDL headcanons Owen and Ianto as friends and Owen as the giant secret softie that we all know he is. This was one of the fanficciest official tie-ins that I’ve ever had the pleasure of shoving into my brain, and now I need to get my hands on GDL’s Tosh & Ianto one because I’m sure it is also amazing.

Gotta admit, Ianto wasn’t my favorite character from the Torchwood TV series. In this solo story, told as a series of recorded journal entries, Gareth David-Lloyd shines, showing the character at his best. That’ll definitely inform my view of him going forward. And the story was scary, poignant, and hilarious. Which pretty much sums up Torchwood at its best.
