Barrowman 'Verse insanity - #1 World Without End, snippet 6/?
continuity gripe this time - in Aliens Among Us (first episode i think but i wouldn't swear on it, sorry), it's explained how Jack took a whole bunch of equipment from the Hub to upgrade the Ice Maiden with. this is also talked about in the book (though obviously to a lesser extend as their relations were only just beginning there).
and now.... it's suddenly Gwen who's giving them the parts?? without telling Jack??? what the hell and fuck. and no she obviously isn't 'scavenging' them from random aliens she meets, she's taking them directly from the Hub, or Jack wouldn't be able to recognize them.
just. what?
also in AAU, Gwen was upset at Jack for this (logically, as they need the equipment in fucking Cardiff and it's gone now). this.....
let's just say you can tell that JB really wanted the future of Torchwood to take place on this supership, damn the consequences at home. (the Ice Maiden is seriously almost a knockoff TARDIS. we'll get there later.)
#Barrowman 'Verse comics#gwen cooper#jack harkness#torchwood#the fact that RTD retroactively canonized this whole bullshittery... still so incredible to me#like it's fun but it's also a trainwreck. WHY CANONIZE IT

Back to series 15 of Holby - this time, I’ll be watching S15E24 “Journey’s End”. I don’t know what it says about me that I just keep thinking “oh, there was also a Doctor Who episode with that title” lol.
Edit 1: Oh, Tara. :( And Ollie being so worried about her. :’))
Edit 2: It’s Chantelle’s birthday! This episode aired on the 26th of March 2013, so unless they go on to say it’s set some other day (but it definitely seems like it’s been a week since the previous episode), that’s when her birthday is.
Edit 3: That scene with Chrissie and the patient was lovely.
Edit 4: Tara 😭
Edit 5: Chantelle thinking her ex (maybe Torchwood Boy, maybe another ex, it’s not clear) is the only one to remember her birthday. :(
Edit 6: Henrik and Tara scene!!
Edit 7: It honestly didn’t click with me until just now that Jake doesn’t know (at this point) about Malick being gay.
Edit 8: I’m so obsessed with this whole “secret birthday party for Chantelle” plot. This is the kind of fun later Holby almost always lacked in.
Edit 9: This episode is leaning really hard into the whole ‘Arthur is autistic’ thing, lol.
Edit 10: Jing Lusi being brilliant again. I love Tara (and her relationship with Ollie) so much.
Edit 11: I hate how this dad on AAU is behaving towards his daughter.
Edit 12: Arthur and Ollie scene! I do miss when people from different wards would interact.
Edit 13: Speaking of autistic Arthur, he just said: “The thing is, I just - I tend to find that being myself doesn’t really work for me.”
Edit 14: “Technically that’s four words, isn’t it? Two contracted.” Why is Arthur in this episode acting just like me.
Edit 15: Okay, so apparently Torchwood Boy is indeed the ex who called Chantelle earlier. And she’s going out for a meal with him. Chantelle, turning Arthur down is one thing, but don’t give Torchwood Boy the time of day! He never deserved you! You deserve better!
Edit 16: Henrik calling Tara by her first name 😭 He almost never went by first-name basis with people at this point, especially not at work. So you know he’s worried when he addresses her as “Tara” and not “Dr. Lo”.
Edit 17: Wow. Just... wow. That final monologue from Tara just blew me away. The writing, the delivery... the whole thing is just heartbreaking.
Also, just... see, this is why I don’t understand “Henrik saw Sahira as a daughter!” takes (or the fact that his actual Wikipedia page says that - I really need to update it at some point). For one thing, Guy Henry himself has said that Henrik was sexually attracted to Sahira.
But even if he hadn’t - Henrik was very clear on his interest in Sahira being romantic (he freaked out so much when she asked him if it was for a reason, he wouldn’t have been so bothered if it wasn’t the case), he repeatedly compared himself to Sahira’s romantic interests (both Greg and Rafi) with comments like “why would you be [dependent on Henrik for emotional validation] when you can derive your self-esteem from the fawning attentions of our finest beta males?”, or “What you felt in there [theatre] just now... you won’t feel that anywhere else. Or with anyone else.” (this was literally part of a rant about how if she left Holby and moved away with her husband, she’d come to resent Rafi and want to still be with Henrik instead!). Even just the way he looks at her - that’s not the way you look at someone you think of as a daughter.
I mean, I know fundamentally abuse and harassment is more about power than attraction - and it’s about power in Henrik’s case too - but in this case, attraction was most definitely a facet in the whole thing. It would still have been sexual harassment and emotional abuse (yes, I said the words, the words fandom utterly refuses to apply to Henrik and his treatment of Sahira! Actually, there might be some interesting analysis to apply here about how people struggle to accept that someone can be an abuser to someone in their life and also have genuinely loving and positive relationships with others. Because Henrik’s not a complete monster all the time, and has had plenty of moments of care and compassion, people struggle to accept that he can have done all of that and still have abused Sahira.) if he wasn’t attracted to her, but he was.
Whereas if you look at his relationship with Tara - he genuinely loves her, worries about her, and treats her like a daughter. He cared deeply enough that even Roxanna felt the need to tell him how sorry she was after Tara’s passing. I don’t know why people say Sahira was the one he viewed as a daughter, when he was so much more parental to Tara.
I might edit this again later to cut down this meta, because the rant’s gotten longer than I intended. I have a lot of feelings about the Henrik/Tara relationship.

So I've finished God Among Us
Loved it so much omg but **SPOILERS**
That ending??? Very good, somewhat satisfying but still kind of cliffhangers?
Andy arresting Yvonne again?
Where are the new Torchwood team going?? Are they gonna come back?
Is Colin okay? Is Colchester gonna tell him that he's okay??
A lot of emotions and idk how to feel now that it's over since this has been 2 years in the making. Really hoping they make a new boxset with this team possibly on the run? They're so good and pure I love them
#Idk how to cope now help#Someone tell me they've finished it too 😂#Torchwood#Torchwood spoilers#God among us#Gau#Gau spoilers#Big finish#Aliens among us#Aau#God among us spoilers

scotthandcock replied to your post “Urrrgggggggh Big Finish, why did you have to go and put Norton Folgate...”
Why don't you want to listen? :(
Without getting into the specifics (because I’ve posted walls-o’-discourse on it before and at this point everyone who likes the series is probably tired of my ranting, and everyone who doesn’t probably won’t want to read about it)... I really did not enjoy AAU. I tried. I wanted to like it. I pre-ordered it and everything, but I couldn’t even make it through the second box set. I wasn’t particularly hooked by the story or new characters, and there were enough things that made me uncomfortable or angry (mostly having to do with Jack’s characterization) that I finally decided it was better for my blood pressure to stop listening.
It’s frustrating, because on the whole I’ve really enjoyed the monthly range, and I loved the TW1 episodes with Ianto and Yvonne, and every story with Norton Folgate has been a precious jewel, and like all Torchwood fans I am desperate for new content. But I spent the first several episodes of AAU wishing Tyler certain characters would get flattened by a bus and resenting the fact that most of Jack’s leadership ability and character growth from the original series had apparently vanished in the interim, and I just don’t think I can psych myself up to listen to another... let’s see... eighteen hours? of the same.
I could be wrong, of course; there’s the possibility that it gets better, that Jack’s unsettling characterization resolves into something worthwhile, that Tyler does, in fact, get run over by a bus. (I know he doesn’t; his name is still in the credits.) But several fans who listened to the entire thing have told me I probably won’t like the rest of AAU if I didn’t like the first half, and I’m assuming GAU picks up where AAU left off, so it doesn’t seem possible to skip ahead to the parts I’m interested in.
But NORTON FOLGATE, man. I love Norton. That’s almost enough to make me struggle through another episode of AAU and see if I still dislike it.
Almost.
#scotthandcock#torchwood#aau#gau#norton folgate#to be honest#i probably could have handled anything other than screwing up jack's character#but he was the last remaining unadulterated central Torchwood character#and AAU is the first thing in DW/TW history that actually made me hate him#which takes some doing since he's one of my favorite characters#but it's hard to like him when the first thing he does is literally#stalk and sleep with a potential employee to see if he wants to hire him#like that is CREEPER LEVEL 10 right there#and then it keeps going downhill#as he gets whinier and his leadership gets worse#and for some reason he keeps sleeping with Tyler even when it puts the team at risk#and then he crossed a line in love rat that just. NOPE. done. check please.#and then to say 'it wasn't my fault!' shows just how little of original jack is left#gahhh i'm getting angry all over again just thinking about it

☕ on aliens among us/gods among us if you've listened to them?
Ooooh I can def spill the ☕️ on AAU. These are of course my own opinions and I understand why people like AAU, it’s just really not for me. If you like AAU I’d suggest not reading this lol
I haven’t listened to GAU yet and honestly the fact that I’m currently low on money isn’t the biggest reason :/ I’ll put spoilery stuff under the cut but my biggest non spoilery issues with AAU are the length/format of the season and the characters introduced.
I really feel like by now the torchwood writers should know that torchwood isn’t really a platform to tell long drawn out stories on??? Like miracle day bombed for a lot of reasons and imo one of those reasons is the fact that it was a seven episode plot stretched out into ten. 12 episodes of the AAU plot was too much for me, and the fact that they’re continuing the same story with GAU is kind of infuriating. Again I haven’t listened to GAU so I can’t judge that but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it just seems really unnecessary. Torchwood’s never going to beat the CoE five episode epic, so I think they should leave the long overarching story setup behind and go back to the setup of s1 and 2 where most of the episodes are unrelated but there’s still an emotional arc. Actually now that I say that, I think AAU would have been awesome as a five episode arc like CoE. I think that would have been a perfect length for this story.
As far as the characters go (without being spoilery) the only one that’s been introduced that I really like is Orr. Everyone else I feel whatever about (like Colchester) or I genuinely dislike them (Tyler and Ng).
Now, spoilers. What they did to Gwen’s character makes me so so so mad oh god. I get that Eve couldn’t be there to record a lot but just like…have Gwen fuck off to do a mission out of Cardiff or something like that. I don’t know, I just really don’t like the Ng plotline or how it made Gwen leave torchwood. I really feel after all she’s been through that this shouldn’t be what makes her decide to leave. If anything I feel like this would make Gwen want to stay even more and get to the bottom of what’s going on because it affected her so personally. Also FUCK the story Love Rat, I could do a whole tea spilling post on just that but I won’t because that episode makes me sick tbh.
Also I still can’t believe the character that “was alive that shouldn’t be” or whatever was fucking AU Yvonne. I don’t even want real Yvonne, nvm this fake one. I’m just so over her. No offense to the actress of course, she seems lovely, but I’m sick of the character.
ALSO I’m sick of bf writing stories where Jack’s character development over the series crumbles under itself. He keeps being a petulant child who’s secretive af and I find it so dull and repetitive. And his thing with Tyler seems so unlikely. Like I get that Jack’s made really bad choices with his lovers in the past but at least John Hart for example is funny, intelligent, and charismatic? I can’t find a single thing to like about Tyler
Tbh the only episodes of AAU that stick out as really good ones for me are Orr and the one Joe Lidster wrote, which checks out because he’s my favorite torchwood writer.
ANYWAYS I really went off on that, I’m sorry that was so long sjdfjelwlkj. If you’re a fan of AAU I’m sorry, I really hope you hold nothing against me cause I genuinely wish I enjoyed the series more than I do and I’m glad one of us is having a good time lol

Torchwood: Aliens Among Us 3
Gonna mention spoilers towards the end of this, so beware. Holy fuck that was pretty damn good. This series as a whole has been one of my all-time favourite projects BF have put out, and it’s consistently felt like a new series of the show on TV, which is no mean feat given it’s a) on audio and b) 7 years since the show last aired. Also, bloody love Yvonne, and it’s such an INTERESTING YET OBVIOUS explanation for her survival. How very brilliant. I noticed this after box one, but it’s strange how after such a short time-frame the new team seem so totally, iconic Torchwood. However, didn’t feel satisfied with every narrative decision which is a bit of a shame but hey. I do feel Gwen’s exit came from literally nowhere. I just don’t feel like she’s the type to just throw in the towel like that. I mean, her goodbye speech was lovely (loved the mention of Esther - we need some material with the Miracle Day cast) but it just wasn’t... right. I think it’s natural for her to want time away from Torchwood to figure out her family but she pretty much rules out coming back, and doesn’t seem to ever want anything to do with Torchwood. It’s such a big part of her life and in the gap between CoE and Miracle Day she couldn’t give it up (and after MD too). so it’s disconcerting to hear her do this here. I was also a bit unimpressed that so much of the story was left unanswered. Who was Ng, and like why? That was the big mystery for the series and there’s NO resolution other than getting Gwen back for 5 minutes. There’s parts of the puzzle with the Sorvix god but not enough. Also I’m liking where they’re going( Glad they’re part of the ensemble going forward). What’s happened to Colchester and Orr and is Jack gone now? I just feel a bit irked that the series set up so much and explained so little, it just feels inconsequential. I do love it, for it’s flaws but there’s a lot of disappointment too. I hope we get a sixth series in a similar format, but I’d just like it to be more satisfying and to tie up the story threads coherently and naturally.
