HEY guess who's being completely normal about episode 7 :)
anyway it sure ain't me, so I made myself a baby Malleus! I used the single-headed version of Choly Knight's hydra pattern (link will be in replies ↓↓↓) as a base, and just messed with some of the pieces to make him more Mall-y. including sewing all those little claw pieces, then pinning them on and realizing I actually liked him better without them...oh well. to heck with accuracy, I want stubby little dragon legs!
unfortunately, he doesn't photograph very well, especially his forehead scales (they're there! I promise!) (they're made of glitter HTV so they are actually SPARKLY in real life, yet apparently they come out completely invisible in photos, woe). but he is super cuddly and soft so I'm happy with him! just as in canon, he is a product of LOVE. :>

me: I've made many garments for myself! cutting and fitting and stitching singlehandedly!
a potential employer: can you finish these seams by machine?
me: I have never sewed anything ever in mine entire Life
#sewing#I never have a REASON to do machine finishes in my defense!#I get most of my undergarments vintage/antique so I don't have to fell those seams by machine#and outer garments are done by Victorian Rules#AKA no visible topstitching#so I have to do it all with whipstitches by hand. which means that I'm a lot more used to having that extra control to keep things neat#and even while I'm actually sewing#you can't make all those little adjustments as you go on a machine#it's why I don't like machines for finishing work#but I get that modern sewing institutions are often working quicker

Another finished tote bag! The ravens, starry wolf, and dragon fabrics are @firesidetextiles fabric
The duck cloth is more of a teal my phone just will not photograph it correctly when the dragon is in the picture? Idk why
#sewing#handmade#canvas tote bag#ravens tote bag#firesidetextiles fabric#I added a line of contrast topstitching to the canvas on the outside of the bag#because I liked the contrast of the orange and teal#I also used both orange and teal stitching on the handles

secret mushrooms :3
#pls ignore the wonky topstitching on the righthand ones xoxo#the thread is *invisible* against the linen and it makes straight lines surprisingly hard haha#this is the only photo itll ever be visible in so its fine

Think I'm gonna embroider over the neck opening and maybe over some of the topstitching to hide mistakes lol but I've finally finished the shirt I can toil in
#the pattern wanted me to topstitch the neckline not understitch it which means it kinda flaps a little. hence needing embroidery#wearing a mask indoors bc my roommate has covid :(

I mean this in the ace-est possible way but Dimple-in-Reigen's-body is really hot. sorry.
#'but scribe you don't experience attraction what does this even--'#I Do Not Know.#it's just. it's just the Vibes.#other things with similar Vibes include:#really good topstitching#when art is a specific kind of Very Shaped#extremely sharp knives#(ONLY craft knives tho cooking knives and weapons don't count)#olivier armstrong fullmetalalchemist#um. the concept of herb spirals in permaculture#enjambment#a lot of literary devices actually#anaphora is very sexy#sestinas if they're good#ANYWAY the point is that i went from the sort of ace person who would never in a million years use words like 'hot' or 'sexy'#to the sort of ace person who uses them and the things they describe are sure a Category#but not a category that maps in any way at all onto the commonly accepted actual definitions of the words#and then very occasionally a character will enter The Category#and i'll be like what the fuck i don't feel like that about *people*!?#and then i have to remind myself that it's the same feeling as looking at topstitching#okay that's one point#the other point is still that possessed Reigen is hot#ace stuff#mp100

Bought a booksleeve at barnes and nobles this weekend for my freewrite- they only had lile two designs and the size was BARELY enough to fit it so I had to fight with the zipper to get it in. Got into the parking lot and thought "I could've probably just made one" and decided that would be the incentive to finally put my sewing machine to use in 2024
#ngl she kinda cute for being done with a pattern i crafted in 5 min on printer paper#tj talks#craft tag#the topstitching is shit but thats because the binding was uneven so it wouldnt have worked on my sewing machine#i think in the future ill have to use wider bias tape methinks?#if i could get a clean stitching on the bias tape i could probably make a few and do a craft fair this year so i caj FINALLY-#-get rid of the fabric i have hoarded over the past four years#what do we think gang#did a metal snap closure cause my brain was not allowing me to figure out how to put a zipper in

So I'm working on binding a quilt, and I was wondering what other quilters prefer in terms of method: binding strips or folding over one side onto the other (usually backing to front)
Also if you're not a quilter do you have a preference?
If you prefer one, why? (Like how it looks, saves on material, trimming multiple layers is annoying, etc etc)
#polls#quilters#quilting#quiltblr#crafts#used two crazy quilts to demonstrate to keep it even#i made the one with binding strips and my grandma made the one with fish backing#i find folding over to be a little more saving on materials used but trimming is a bitch when you have to trim 2 or all 3 separately#binding strips otoh you have other issues especially if you want the invisible topstitch look

It Is Finished! (minus the buttonholes and buttons)
#but i need to figure out how the buttonhole foot on my machine works#then for the real thing i need to acquire the right buttons and also some lining (not much it's mostly unlined)#lining is hard to figure out but i'm leaning towards acetate bc i don't love polyester and i don't want something too slippery#i did do the topstitching along the bottom hem a bit differently to the pattern but that was trying something#i think i'll do it properly next time (incl bc actual 49ers were like that too)#ray's photos

Cloaksforall Sewalong Step 3 - Sewing the hood
Hood opening
We start with making the hood opening look nice.
Take the two hood pieces, and on each fold the long opening edge down twice so that the fold is on the inside (wrong side of the fabric), pin and sew. If your fabric is very thick, you may have to bind it with bias band instead. (That's what I'm going to do on my new cloak, so explanation will be there.
Joining the hood pieces
Lay the two pieces of the hood on top of each other, matching the sewn opening edges. Pin the top and back together about a cm from the edge, leaving the opening and the bottom free.
Sew along the purple dotted line, making sure to go back and forth a few stitches at the start and end.
Now it's time to press your seam to make it look nicer. Heat up your iron, making sure to pick the low heat synthetic option if you're not sure what fibre your fabric is (test the iron on a fabric scrap!), and put the iron on the stitches for a few seconds before moving on to the next patch of stitches.
The levelled up approach is to also press your seam open. This looks like this:
You can use the rounded end of your ironing board to get easier access to the seam.
Finish the seam of what you have just sewn by sewing over the edge with a zigzag stitch. (Generally the second stitch option on machines).
That's enough for now, tomorrow we'll sew the hood to the cloak.
#cloaksforall sewalong#cloaksforall sewalong step 3#image id in alt text#a talia original#the red riding hood cape was in velvet#so i did not iron it but topstitch#but that's more precision work than is fun for beginners i've found

Look at this skirt I made
It’s kind of blurry but look at this one with proper undergarments and a hastily constructed waistcoat thing (wanted to wear this outfit on the train but the skirt looked too fancy for the shirt so I threw together this and it solved the problem beautifully)
Ignore dirty mirror but doesn’t this outfit slay???
All it need is a decorative belt I think. And better fitting in the hips but that’s just because I fluctuate weight a lot and I gained between the time I cut out the pattern and the time I actually made it.
#historical costuming#sewing#LOVE THIS OUTFIT#but i didnt topstitch the waistcoat before washing and now it’s practically unwearable before I do this#it really needs a belt

clothes fitting
#they're talking abt how i underestimated how bulky their clothes would be so now i need to rework their cloaks at the last minute OTL#still weighing the benefits of topstitching everything... it'd help it all sit flatter but it's so easy to make a visible mistake @_@#also i finally totaled the cost of all their materials and. llllet's just say. i just hope they look their worth

Ahahaha, I feel like a mad scientist - IT WORKED!
You can barely see the seams bc this linen presses so nicely, but my unnecessarly complicated binding worked, I'm so pleased
