So, uh. I turned FFXIV’s take on Carbuncle, everyone’s favorite bootleg Eevee, into a proper fanmade Pokémon with a statblock and everything.

In an attempt to differentiate between the various elemental forms as more than basic colourswaps I worked a bit of their Primal counterparts into the designs. More under the cut!

Holding Arcane Topaz: Gemshine becomes Ground-type, Power 45, hits two times, with the second hit having an increased critical hit rate. Holding Arcane Ruby: Gemshine becomes Fire-type, Power 120. Lays down a barrier and charges up for one turn, then releases an attack and drops the barrier on the next. The barrier functions similarly to the one set by Aurora Veil. In Demiwyrm Form: Gemshine's base power is boosted to 100, it has no secondary effect, and its type is determined by the gemstone held by the Pokemon. If not holding a gemstone, its type is Fairy.

They all have roughly Babytwo proportions even though they’re adults.

The eggshells do not come off; they are part of their bodies. Except for Topaz. They don’t have any eggshell, so they wear that eggshell helmet to fit in. Sometimes they have to replace it.

As can be seen from this, this new self-insert doesn’t stick to any particular nicknaming scheme across all of her Pokémon, unlike Adriana (who gives nicknames based on fitting words, like Soulfire for Chandelure) or Nova (whose nicknames come from sounds in the Pokémon’s name, like Chirithy from Cinccino). In fact, she kind of has a mix of both of those styles across the Pokémon she has.

She originally deliberated whether to bring as many of her Hoenn team as she could to Paldea, but eventually decided to only bring Mari and Aria, mainly for ease of traversing the region with their help (as she didn’t know they had such a good Flying Taxi system until she got there). Later on, she ended up trading Aria for the Glaceon she has since nicknamed Snowball.

I know I still don’t have much established for this self-insert, but I’m still having a lot of fun thinking about her and developing her more, so I hope it’s okay to have made this post!

I needed three more Spirit Orbs to reach 13 hearts, so did some internet-aided shrine grinding.

‘Oooooh. You don’t use Stasis on this one. You put the second bomb on the rock. Then you ride the rock.’ (This was the ‘Shatter the Heavens’ shrine; I’d been trying to Stasis the stone and explode as many bombs under it as possible before the Stasis broke, thinking it would rocket off the bar and fly into the air. I was very wrong).

That awkward moment when you’re waiting for the puzzle to register that you completed it, and you start to think you messed up despite following the instructions to a tee (the ‘Five Flames’ shrine).

Final shrine was The Seven Heroines. I remember making some kind of accidental innuendo but I don’t remember what it was. I do that a lot around Erin, sadly(? also not it’s great?).

I was trying to get a picture of a new weapon but my camera wouldn’t stop focusing the the treasure chest behind me.

“Erin, Erin are you ready to see the thing? Wait, I need to do a thing real quick.”

Spending a good five minutes trying to pick the perfect outfit to wear while pulling out the Master Sword. At some point got down to Link’s underwear, so I decided to test what I’d heard about running up to Hestu while exposed. It was wonderful.

Duh-nuh-nuh-naaa! Master Sword get!

Briefly considered going to Hyrule Castle, at the suggestion of Tera last night. Got to the edge of the moat and decided nope for now, I feel brave and want to try the Yiga again.

Erin is a good luck charm, because I made it past all the guards this time! Also I realized I could just shoot down one pile of bananas and distract the one guard between me and the ladder.

Tried to get past that one extra area with spikes but instead of kicking off the wall and activating his glider Link kept leaping to the opposite wall. I gave up.

Erin guessing it was Mighty Bananas in the chest before I even opened it.

‘Oh what this chest here? More bananas? Nope a Topaz. What about this one? Okay cool. I hope you realize I’m milking this-what’s that wall?’

Got a great picture of Kohga throwing things at me. Battle went pretty quick.

When I got home, I turned on the game, intending to write a list of the weapons in the compendium and what I need, but got distracted for over an hour. So basically I just went up to see Riju and got one of my favorite memories. Urbosa is great. I love her.

So that’s it. Tomorrow if I can I intend to do Vah Noboris, then if I have time go explore around Hyrule Castle. Which do you think will end up killing me more?

Interview with Kashaka

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kashaka over Zoom video! 

Kashaka teamed up with NY-based director Patricia Gloum, who has created and directed videos for artists such as Blu De Tiger and commercials for Louis Vuitton, Uniqlo and more. Together they rounded up some of NYC's best and brightest creatives, such as musician Siimba Selassiie, dancer/model Arron Ricks, and more, to create a stunning visual. The video was shot at the beloved (and now sadly closed) Williamsburg club, Output (where Kashaka used to run/host the Everyday Afrique parties), an industrial site in Bushwick and Jacob Riis beach in Queens. 

Kashaka a.k.a. Eli Evnen is an American recording artist, record producer, songwriter, engineer and composer. Originally from Lincoln Nebraska, Evnen has lived in New York City, Ghana, & Los Angeles. He’s produced for artists like Topaz Jones, Ski Mask, the Slump God, Chynna, A$AP Ferg, Zebra Katz and more. He’s composed for brands like Tiffany & Co. & Capitol One and has scored music for shows on Showtime, Netflix, & Hulu. His first album as a solo artist, Van Pelt Farm, was made on a family farm near his hometown and released in August of 2020.
