Tuesday 5th November 2024
The Stuart Highway is the major route from north to south, from Darwin in the Northern Territories right down to Port Augusta in Southern Australia. To compare it to the M25 would be far from accurate. For such an important road, 2720kms of it, there's little traffic on it by UK standards. By far the heaviest use comes from the mighty road trains that thunder back and forth top to bottom of this vast country. These things take no prisoners; they will not stop for animals on the highway or pretty much anything else come to think of it. They can be over 50 meters long with 3 or 4 sections, sometimes 60m. Big vehicles. And so it was as we ventured back up the Stuart Highway again this morning we ploughed up an empty road passing the occasional road train. We were off to Edith Falls, a mere 150km round trip. Edith Falls, now known as Leliyn, was originally named after the daughter of a Police Commissioner in the 1900s. And I don't believe Edith Falls in the water, off the bridge or over the cliff. We were equally careful not to emulate this either as we set off from the car park on a 'loop walk' of 2.7kms. Not far, I hear you protest, but as we embarked, it was 38 degrees, and the walk is described as medium to difficult; rocks to climb on an uphill trajectory. Plenty in the rucksack to drink and big hats, we set off. The expedition worthy of a Duke of Edinburgh award winds clockwise around three pools: a lower pool, a middle pool, and an upper pool. This is a major attraction yet we met virtually no-one on route. Beautiful pools hidden from view and fed by waterfalls from above which despite technically still in the dry season, the Falls were running still. At a couple of vantage points, our efforts were rewarded by fantastic views that went on and on. This was indeed a gorgeous location; so peaceful and tranquil. The lowest pool was for bathers, but there were none there, and the clear waters showcased an entire spectrum of pond life. Miraculously, not only did the Nitmiluk National Park provide a cafe where it was needed, but it was actually open! As we supped a coffee, tranquility was entirely shattered by 2 coach loads of German tourists as they disgorged and noisily elbowed their way down to the plunge pool brandishing their national emblem aloft, the beach towel.
A really good day out, and we'll worth the distance travelled. We envied the couple running the cafe. They were standing in for the usual team, and had travelled up from Bunbury in WA to live and work there for a couple of weeks. We could do that!
Back to Katherine and the bottle shop. Usual scrutiny of ID to make sure we weren't on the naughty boys list and away we came with the SB for the customary sunset ceremony. This ban of sale of alcohol to those on the list is state wide across the Northern Territories.
ps. Despite the heat, vindaloo with left over rubbery chicken. Jacobs Creek SB. Tim Tams later on as we watched George Gently.
Predictable or what?
pps. Tomorrow no intention to view anymore pools or waterfalls.

Top 5 places you'd like to visit
ooh! a good one because i am truly not a travel-for-whimsy person. i largely find travel awful unless there is a specific reason for said travel, i.e., someone specific on the other end i want to see. that said, there are places i would willingly go if i had the opportunity (money and politics included) and could do so without being "part of the problem" while doing so. having lived in a major tourist destination for almost two decades has made me very aware of the ways tourism is a scourge, and i have a lot of complicated feelings on travel for travel's sake as a marker of success and education or wev the common belief of it is as a result.
that said:
5. scotland. while i do have one singular friend there whom i would enjoy seeing, this is a place to which i would travel without that being the main purpose. i don't have any deep reason for it. i think it's extremely lovely, would love to see some of the castles, and some of the really old graveyards. i also have this weird idyllic notion that i would enjoy hiking and staying in bothies in the process. i have a really distant relative who was forced out by the clearances but has never actually been part of the draw.
4. tibet. this is definitely a "if i could not be part of the problem" thing. because i don't mean like, chinese controlled tibet. like, tibet as it belongs to the indigenous people of the region. i just want to learn as much as i can about it from the people who love it, who can tell me about it without the oppressive government twisting, and it may be the one place on my list i want to see purely for this purpose. it's also, for many reasons, the one place on this list i am least likely to ever have the opportunity to visit, second only to one place i will mention shortly.
3. australia. while i pretty famously have a dear friend here, my desire to have my ass kicked by nature extends far before that friendship was even in its infancy. seeing @icescrabblerjerky would obviously be the main goal now, but i really need to have a kangaroo stare me down from his native land or something. there is also a "don't be part of the problem" element here, as respecting, supporting, and understanding indigenous culture is always a goal of mine wherever i might be.
2. far northern america. like, canada, alaska, and even the northwest stretches of the upper peninsula. like i grew up there and have never been to copper harbor. i've been to alaska once on a layover with enough time to go to the best state fair i have ever experienced, but i'd appreciate the opportunity to see more. the northwest territories. the yukon. nunavut. i don't have a goal or actual destination in mind, but the far reaches of turtle island/mishiike minisi hold a lot of (probably obvious) appeal to me.
1. your house again. obvs. you have cool dogs and take me for walks. i know i am cheating a bit, but really. you're the main attraction of the midwest, baybee.
there needs to be an honorable mention here that has too many caveats to list, but north korea. having lived in seoul, i think it's natural that i would be curious about it. there is so much about life in seoul that was in relation to the north in an odd and casual way that i only sort of grasp, even after 20 years of it being a factor in my life. we did visit the dmz and incursion tunnels on a guided historical tour, and there is a "city" (kijong-dong) you can ostensibly visit (we were forbidden by our specific circumstances from doing so), but that tour experience has a very bizarre atmosphere i have a hard time putting into words, and as i was much younger and not a korean speaker like my spouse, i am sure a lot was lost on me. like, our guide made a joke about there being a body in the han river as we drove by on our tour bus and so many people (mostly korean people, as we were surprisingly the only americans on that tour???) found this hilarious, but i found it extremely uncomfortable. like i said, a lot was lost on younger me. so, a complicated mention here.
so, there you go! thanks for the ask! i am feeling needy for them today lmao.

I'm gonna make a tourist ad for Australia real quick
Here's some irl experience scale
Tumblr media
The lower dot is Melbourne (me!) and the higher one is Brisbane (my grandparents!). I have driven up to brissie many times in my life. Probably ten times? If you pack the car Friday morning and leave after work and just immediately gun it north you can get past the Victorian border by like 10pm. Get up early and drive absolutely all day on Saturday can pass all of NSW. Talking like 7am to 8pm driving only. Sleep as close to a NSW/QL border town as possible and, again, drive first thing in the morning. Can usually get to my grandmother's house 90 min north of Brisbane for lunch.
But if you wanted to stop off? And see things? I'd give that distance a week alone and then wouldn't say I'd seen Australia. That's only half the east coast. Highlights on that route for me (as experienced on either separate trips or slower ones) in particular are parks observatory, Sydney rocks, Australia zoo, ACT, Blue mountains, Namadji, Byron bay spas, surfing, and the hume highway's planet installation. Those are just my picks, it's not everything
That's skipping everything inland of the road, btw. So you haven't even seen those states. You've barely scratched Vic and QL. You missed Victoria's great ocean road and Dandenong ranges and wine region and the Grampians and the Otways and the silo tour! The silos are a day and night on their own. You also didn't see the city, that's a whole day or two. Melbourne's got the pokey little galleries and bars, you gotta put time aside to explore, not just hit the main attractions like the ngv or melb museum. Oh and Silverton, with the mad max cars! Gotta see Silverton.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I live in Vic so I know more of the cool stuff here, but it is everywhere. And did you really see Australia if you didn't go to the top end of Queensland and eye a fern distrustfully in case it's a cassowary? Or get spooked by a croc story in Darwin?
Okay, here's a tourist map I found. Try and spot Melbourne and Brisbane then apply the drive length of that to the whole country. Even if you just do the coastal, it's over a week non stop. And that's not seeing the country, that's passing it by. And there's stuff in the middle you gotta do! And fucking Tasmania! MOMA my beloved.
Tumblr media
And you can't have the country and skip western Aus. Like, are you really gonna skip whale spotting and wine region and quokka island around Perth? And there's stuff in-between the east and west coasts!
Like Adelaide and Darwin and Uluru and Coober Pedy, I love Coober Pedy. Town built into an old mine in fuck off nowhere? All the hotels are underground. It's awesome. Opals everywhere. And you're only a day or so drive from Uluru (seven hours one way)
Tumblr media
And like, you just gotta love the long drive. Two days of open red sand and desert shrub then suddenly you hit wine region? Beautiful, breathtaking, how can this exist on one island?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm gonna be one of those retirees that takes six months off in a caravan to drive the country. I'm looking forward to it very much
Tumblr media
In their defence, a lot of it is sand.

China’s list of visa-free countries expanded
China’s visa-free travel list continues to grow, with five more European countries added to the list.
Citizens of Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovakia and Finland have been granted visa-free entry to the Asian country.
Tourists from these countries as well as South Korea will be able to enter China without visas from November 8, 2024 to December 31, 2025.
This comes after the addition of Norway was announced in September and Cyprus, Denmark, Greece, Greece, Portugal and Slovenia in October. This brings the total number of European countries granted visa-free access to 24. In July, travellers from Poland, Australia and New Zealand were also granted unrestricted entry to China until the end of 2025.
The scheme was announced in phases from the beginning of 2024, and various European countries and Malaysia have also been granted visa-free access. The programme aims to attract more people to China for business and tourism purposes, and to promote exchanges between Chinese citizens and foreigners.
The full list of European countries now includes Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland. Tourists from these countries will be allowed to enter China for short stays without a visa until the end of next year.
The aim is to “promote the qualitative development of exchanges between Chinese and foreign personnel and open up the outside world at a high level, Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said at a briefing on the initial announcement in November. Under the trial programme, visa-free entry will be granted for up to 15 days.
China’s international travel recovery continues
According to statistics, the country recorded 35.5 million foreign tourists in 2023, up from 97.7 million before the pandemic. Experts estimate that in the three years that the country was closed to the outside world due to the pandemic, the loss of revenue due to the lack of tourists totalled $362bn.The target for 2024 is to reach a level of 50 per cent of total entry in 2019.
Europe is recovering faster than some other markets, according to travel websites. Trip.com statistics show that growth in total bookings from Europe to China is up more than 6 times in 2023 compared to 2022 and almost 29% compared to 2019. Germany and the UK are in the top 10 most active inbound markets. Shanghai remains China’s most popular destination for Europeans, followed by Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
Encouraging entry works. According to Trip.com, the most recent holiday – the Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, which starts at the end of January and lasts officially 15 days but actually a whole month – saw twice as many tourists from the named 11 European countries travelling to China as in 2019.
China is also doing a lot to facilitate payments, infrastructure development. But according to experts, while the country has made significant strides in developing advanced technology and transport infrastructure for domestic travel, foreign tourists often face problems travelling around the country. For example, to book seats on high-speed trains or museum tickets, it is necessary to use the local WeChat service.
Many establishments accept WeChat Pay or AliPay exclusively, putting foreign travellers in a difficult position if they rely solely on cash or credit cards. And many hotels in China are not allowed to accept foreign travellers at all.
