On Saturday, June 15th, chef Jamal James Kent passed away unexpectedly.
Jamal was a generational talent. A veteran of some of the top fine dining institutions in New York City, where Jamal earned the respect of his peers for his formal skill in the kitchen. In the days following his death, it has quickly become clear that his greater distinction was that he was a uniquely supportive member of the restaurant community. He was dedicated to mentoring younger cooks and lifting their careers, and sharing resources with people, including those who are overlooked by others. We, his family and friends, are committed to building the legacy that he started.
This fund will support The James Kent Family Legacy Trust, a vehicle created exclusively for Jamal's family–his wife, Kelly, and children, Gavin and Avery–to ensure that they’re financially stable and well cared for.

Chef and Managing Partner, Saga Hospitality Group
A Greenwich Village native, Jamal Kent started his culinary career as a summer apprentice at Bouley when he was fifteen years old. After taking classes at Le Cordon Bleu in London and Paris then graduating from Johnson and Wales, Kent moved back to New York where he spent time in the kitchens of some of New York’s most storied restaurants including Babbo and Jean-Georges. In the spring of 2007, Kent joined the team at Eleven Madison Park as a line cook and was quickly promoted to sous chef. In 2010, Kent placed first in the Bocuse d’Or USA Competition; he then represented the United States at the international finals of the Bocuse D'Or in Lyon, France the following year where he placed 10th in the world. When he returned to New York, Kent was named chef de cuisine of Eleven Madison Park. Under his leadership, EMP received nearly every accolade bestowed on a restaurant including four stars from the New York Times, three Michelin stars, and a coveted spot on the list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants. Kent was promoted to Executive Chef of the NoMad in the fall of 2013, the same year that it received one Michelin Star.
In late 2017, Kent set out to open a pair of restaurants and a cocktail bar in the landmark Art Deco building at 70 Pine Street in Manhattan’s Financial District. Crown Shy–an ambitious neighborhood restaurant on the ground floor of the building–exceeded expectations, collecting a Michelin star within a year of opening and raves from the New York Times and The Infatuation. Kent and his team followed up their success with Saga on the building’s 63rd floor, and Overstory, one floor up. They were rewarded with two Michelin stars and the #17 spot on the list of the World’s 50 Best Bars, respectively. With the restaurants at 70 Pine as their calling card, Kent and his partners at SC Holdings set their sights on other New York landmarks.
In Fall 2024, Saga Hospitality Group will open a restaurant in the ground floor space at 360 Park Avenue South on the corner of 26th Street. Later in the year, SHG will become the first retail tenant at Refinery at Domino–the former Domino Sugar Factory on the Williamsburg waterfront.
Kent was an active supporter of a number of charities working to eradicate childhood hunger in New York City including No Kid Hungry and Rethink Food, for which he sat on the Chef’s Council. Kent twice co-chaired the annual Chef’s Benefit dinner for Cookies for Kids Cancer, a nationally-recognized organization that provides funding for pediatric cancer research. And he was a mentor for the Mentors BKB foundation, an organization devoted to inspiring culinary excellence in young professionals and preserving the traditions and quality of cuisine in America.

Catholic Charities Disaster Response Academy
In the middle of October, after Hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated North Carolina and Florida, a colleague and I went to Fall River in Massachusetts for the Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) Disaster Relief Academy certification. This was a six session event held over three days. It’s a national training that CCUSA provides Catholic Charity organizations along the North East of the United States.

The conference was on Disaster Relief in general with many specific workshops. My colleague and I took this opportunity to receive training for the Disaster Case Management (DCM) Certificate and to fulfill the DCM Cadre Requirement.
The training offered the following six sessions:
Sequence of Delivery: developing a process used when providing assistance to disaster survivors. A well developed process maximizes the number of people served while not duplicating services and being responsible stewards of the donated goods.
FEMA Programs: recognizing the process for declared disasters. Although disaster response always start local and end local federally declared disasters establish FEMA Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) to provide the resources that the federal government offers.
Recovery Planning: developing detailed plans after the intake and initial assessment that discusses the actual situation and assesses the needs while communicating a recovery plan with how to move forward. It is an important physical document.
VOAD and LTRG’s: VOADS are coalitions of local organizations responding to disasters. After a natural disaster they form Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) to respond to the unmet needs of survivors who have not received personal or federal assistance.
DCMP, Federally funded Disaster Case Program: local agencies provide short term DCM (0-6 months). Federally declared disasters can fund a long term DCMP contract which is often funded for 24 months with 6 month extension. With funding you can increase your staff to serve a greater amount of survivors.
Knowing these different components allowed us to familiarize ourselves with the different governmental and organizational systems that will help us respond to natural disasters. It was intense but we learned a great deal about how the system of collaboration works between the federal agencies and local organizations. The education we received was crucial, we learned the process that local organizations need to be attentive to both before a disaster hits (blue sky operations) and in the midst of a natural disaster (grey sky operations).
During this training we did many table top small groups to walk through a case study. It was an interactive training where we were also able to learn from one another on how to follow the steps for responding to disaster survivors.
At the end of this training we had one more session called the Disaster Relief Cadre. It prepared us to work as an Agency Staff Assistance Program (ASAP) team and organize the logistics of our disaster response.

Trainings like this allow us to respond to the needs of the community when natural disasters strike. The federal and state governments work with agencies like Catholic Charities to respond to disasters in our communities.

Baytown, Texas, is in Harris and Chambers counties, forming part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Located on the northern edge of the Galveston Bay complex, it is near the confluence of the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou. It ranks as the sixth-largest city in the metropolitan area and the seventh-largest community, including The Woodlands CDP. Major Baytown highways include State Highway 99, 146, and Interstate 10. According to the 2020 U.S. census, Baytown's population was 83,701, estimated to have grown to 84,324 by 2022.
The area now known as Baytown saw its first White American settlers in 1822. Among these early settlers was Nathaniel Lynch, who established a ferry crossing at the junction of the San Jacinto River and Buffalo Bayou, a service still in operation today as the Lynchburg Ferry. Other notable early settlers included William Scott, one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred, and Ashbel Smith, who owned a plantation in the area.
Initially, Baytown consisted of three separate towns. The first, Goose Creek, was named after the nearby bayou where Canada geese would winter, a name still reflected in the Goose Creek school district established before 1850. The discovery of the Goose Creek Oil Field led to the development of the rival communities of Pelly in the late 1910s and East Baytown in the early 1920s, both emerging as early boomtowns. The "East" in East Baytown was later dropped as it was located west of Goose Creek.
Discussions about merging the three cities began shortly after World War I, but Baytown initially resisted. However, in 1947, the three towns agreed to consolidate under Baytown, officially forming the city on January 24, 1948.
In 1916, the Humble Oil and Refining Company, founded by former Texas governor Ross S. Sterling and his associates, developed the Goose Creek Oil Field, establishing Texas's first offshore drilling operation and the second in the United States. The company later built the Baytown Refinery, one of the world's largest Exxon refineries. Today, ExxonMobil remains a significant employer in the city, operating over ten plants in the area, including a newly announced $2 billion expansion to its chemical facilities in 2019.
The discovery of oil spurred significant population growth in Baytown and the surrounding tri-cities area. This period saw an influx of immigrants, including Jewish families who established the K’nesseth Israel synagogue in 1930.
Steel manufacturing in Baytown began in 1970 when United States Steel opened the Texas Works near the city. The plant was closed in July 1986 due to economic challenges and the decline of American steel in the 1980s. Jindal Steel acquired the facility and now operates as JSW Steel USA, Inc.

Beware of Rainbow Washing!
Pride Month just got over, and brands couldn’t get enough of it with the beautiful rainbow colours and scores of artistic creativity; starting from Burger King’s Pride Whopper with ‘top’ and ‘bottom’ buns and lusciously chopped vegetables to a variety of limited edition tie-dye rainbow prints and other rainbow-coloured garments. I, too, wanted to flaunt such merchandise as a proud ally and own it. However, it struck me, am I being rainbow washed?

But first, why is Pride Month celebrated throughout June? Pride Month is celebrated to commemorate the Stonewall Riots in USA, which began in the last week of June 1969 and paved the way for the Lesbian, Gay, and Transgender Communities’ fight for equal rights. The police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village, a common gathering place for the young and old members of the LGBT community. These protests went on for five long days. On November 2nd, 1969, the idea of a march in response to the riots was proposed at the Eastern Regional Conference of Homophile Organizations in Philadelphia. On June 28th, 1970, a year after the Stonewall Riots, they marched through Christopher Street which became the epicentre of the riots and June 28th came to be known as the Liberation Day. The theme was ‘gay pride,’ and the slogan “Say it clear, say it loud. Gay is good, gay is proud” could be heard everywhere. Later, the month of June was officially recognized by Bill Clinton in 1999, followed by Barack Obama declaring June as the ‘LGBT Pride Month.’ it is the current President Joe Biden, who went a notch ahead and declared it as the ‘LGBTQ+ Pride Month’ to include everyone from the vast community. Many countries have followed suit and today June is celebrated as Pride Month globally with Kolkata’s 1999 Pride March being India’s first.
With a painful yet rich history to this celebration, brands have been seen to misuse it to their benefit. Rainbow washing, as the act is named, is where brands use Pride Month and take incidental advantage of the various colours it represents, by benefitting from the false inclusive marketing of its products. These companies are merely marketing this month for their own profits while in reality they may not believe in diversity or inclusion or worse still, indulge and support anti-LGBT practices. This is similar to Greenwashing (companies lying/falsely marketing their products to be sustainable and environmentally friendly by changing logos/banners etc. to shades of green, brown or yellow) or Pinkwashing (brands that misleadingly use the pink ribbon logo that symbolizes support for breast cancer charities). Not only is it wrong in the sense that it conveys a false message and outrightly lies to its customers, but also that it dilutes the underlying message and intention of Pride month.
Let’s examine the two examples given above. Burger King had to issue an apology for its widely criticized advertisement of the ‘Pride Whopper’ as it spoke about having two ‘tops’ and two ‘bottoms’ and hence completely misrepresented sex in the LGBT community. People called it an entirely tone-deaf campaign while marketing the ‘matching top buns.’ Bewakoof.com came out with a wide range of quirky rainbow-coloured products during the month. However, a deep dive into their history showed a grossly homophobic meme in 2015, which was taken down after an uproar by blogger Divya Roop. “Save the girl children or else 25 years later your son will come home and say Asha to mili nahi so Ashish le aya”. For a campaign meant to spread the message of ‘Save the Girl Child’, a homophobic route was taken. While the company had apologized for this marketing tactic, it gives an insight into the double standards. These brands latch on to this exclusive opportunity yearly and then forget about it for the rest of the 11 months. What we must ask is, do we really want to spend extra money on such ‘limited edition products?
Mansi Shanbag, a Lead Copywriter at WATConsult, very clearly says, “BRANDS ALWAYS WANT TO BREAK CLUTTER. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO PRIDE MONTH, THEY ARE ALL ABOUT SPAMMING. It is so very easy to stick a rainbow on your product, your logo, your name for a month and do absolutely nothing to actually contribute to the movement”. Companies should consult queering personalities and listen to their opinions before they can prove their allyship to the LGBT community.
Acko released an advertisement starring Neeraj Kabi in 2021 to promote its pride campaign. The ad showed him changing his social media profile picture to the colours of the pride and then proudly showing that off to his friends. His friends pat him on his back, assuming he had accepted his son’s sexual identity. This leaves him speechless as he tries to accept and digest this reality. “Post pride, Support pride, but more importantly, be ready to accept Pride” was Acko’s slogan. To ally with the community is not to merely flaunt its colours but also to readily accept and empathize with the soul of the idea. Are we ready to do that in the non-pride months?

yeah. in addition to individual gofundmes, i donated to muslim aid usa. i usually avoid religious orgs, but they had the best stats on charity watch of the organizations i was looking at. you can find charity watch's list of aid organizations working in the region here, alhough keep in mind they mix orgs benefitting israelis and orgs benefitting palestinians in the same list.
idk how/where to even research this so someone plz correct me if i'm wrong but it feels like with the emphasis on individual gfm campaigns talks abt general aid to Gazans in Gaza have fallen to they way side? like maybe it's just Tumblr but i feel like ppl are treating that kind of aid as idk "lesser"? obviously i know escaping is very very important but so is food/water/shelter/medical aid in Gaza while ppl wait for their campaigns to reach goals/the chance to actually cross the border + all the ppl who can't flee for whatever reason (mainly disability/injury that'd make travel impossible)
