That’s what Riverside resident Balwinder Singh Wraich paid at auction July 13 for the 1,034.78 acres of property in and around Desert Center. What he does with the land could radically transform a region that’s home to people who’ve spent generations in desert solitude.

A 3,200-square foot Palm Springs house, designed by architect Ray Kappe, with spectacular views of the city and surrounding mountains.

A 6,000-square foot, six-bedroom, seven-bathroom “retreat” in Malibu Canyon, on an 8-acre property.

A 3,750-square foot, five-bedroom, four-bathroom house literally on the beach in Dana Point.

But Desert Center is a largely empty desert outpost in the Chuckwalla Valley, about 50 miles from either Blythe or Indio, almost exactly halfway between Los Angeles and Phoenix. The land Wraich bought includes two gas stations, a cafe, a hotel, store, school and the gravesite of a former cafe cook — all abandoned.

Desert Center has no city council or other government. But the U.S. Census Bureau lists it as a spot where people have come together, even though it’s not a formal town or city. The bureau estimates 216 people lived there in 2019, with a median age of 70.6 years old.

The Desert Center Unified School District teaches 29 students, according to the California Department of Education, ranging from kindergarten through 8th grade. The district operates just one of its former five schools. The others shut down after Kaiser Steel’s nearby Eagle Mountain mine closed in 1983. High school students travel about 50 miles each way to attend classes in Blythe. The shell of a former school, caked in graffiti, with broken glass and ceramic tile covering the floor, is visible to freeway motorists zipping past Desert Center.

The road behind

According to legend, in 1915, Kansas-born Stephen Ragsdale and his wife Lydia were driving to Los Angeles, before breaking down on the dirt wagon road between Blythe and Indio. Rescued by a prospector, Ragsdale saw opportunity in the other motorists crossing the Colorado Desert.

“He’d seen numerous people who had been unprepared crossing the desert, so he conceived of the idea of having a rest stop at the halfway point,” said Steve Lech, a historian and author who co-writes The Press-Enterprise’s Back in the Day local history column. “That’s why he called it Desert Center: It was kind of a marketing ploy.”

Opened in September 1921, Desert Center was a family affair.

“He would run the tow truck and pump gas. His wife would run the cafe and do the cooking,” Lech said. “He had two sons and a daughter and they would do auto repairs and work at the center.”

Ragsdale, rebranding himself “Desert Steve,” had dreams of expanding Desert Center, according to Lech. But Ragsdale believed in temperance: Even after Prohibition ended in 1933, he didn’t want tenants to serve or sell alcohol. His lawyer said Ragsdale couldn’t legally prohibit alcohol. So Desert Center stayed small.

Margit Chiriaco Rusche’s parents started the competing community and rest stop of Chiriaco Summit, 19 miles to the west, on the western rim of the Chuckwalla Valley. They spent decades as frenemies of the Ragsdales.  According to Rusche, Steve Ragsdale vowed to “run that upstart Italian out of town” when Joe and Ruth Chiriaco moved there in 1933.

“It was very remote,” Rusche said. “As little kids, we pumped gas, we made hamburgers.”

Today, she’s CEO of Chiriaco Summit. It offers food, gas and the General Patton Memorial Museum for road-weary travelers. A motel and a mobile home and RV park are planned.

After his death in 1971, Ragsdale’s son Stanley ran Desert Center until he died in 1999. He kept it small, turning down offers from fast-food chains and others who wanted to “improve” the outpost.

Stanley’s six kids couldn’t agree on how to manage the businesses, so Desert Center gradually shut down. Their battle spent two decades in probate court. It might be the longest probate case in county history, according to Paula Turner, the real estate agent whose Coachella Valley firm handled the sale.

“I haven’t sold a town before,” she said. “This is my first town!”

Even before the auction, Rusche had tried to buy a piece of Desert Center more than once.

“When they were closing down, we were going through a contract to lease the (Desert Center) coffee shop to update it. Thousands and thousands of dollars later, one of the brothers said ‘No, not with a Chiriaco,’” she said.

Rusche then tried to buy part of the property, but the family member selling it didn’t have the clear legal right to do so.

Finally, Riverside County had enough.

“The judge said ‘It’s been 20 years, we’re putting it up for auction,’” Rusche said.

Wraich did not respond to repeated requests for comment. His family runs the Fontana-based trucking company Wraich Transport, which includes the Wraich Travel Plaza truck stop in Fontana.

The property was put up for auction for $5 million, before Wraich outbid Rusche, winning Desert Center with a $6.25 million bid. That brought an end to the Ragsdales’ ownership of the community founded by their patriarch. Members of the Ragsdale family declined to comment.

“That’s how it goes,” Rusche said. “We decided that dirt wasn’t worth that much money.”

In the end, the Chiriacos did get a bit of Desert Center, purchasing a totem pole that once stood outside the cafe. It will be going up at Chiriaco Summit soon, Rusche said.

The here and now

Trucks idle in vacant lots, curtains drawn as drivers presumably get some sleep.

The roof of the Desert Center Market is caved in, roof beams crashed down around empty ice cream and soda refrigerators. A sign in the window reads “Sorry, we’re closed.”

Someone appears to have walked away from the boarded-up cafe mid-cleaning. A bottle of Windex and a roll of paper towels on a table caked in a thick layer of dust are visible through the windows.

Only the U.S. Post Office is still open. The other three shops in the tiny strip mall are long since closed. They seem to have shut down mid-renovation, with paint cans and drop clothes covered in dust visible inside.

“They let it go really bad,” said Harold Copeland, whose first job was working at Desert Center in 1977. “They should have sold something a long time ago and made something of it.”

Few live in Desert Center today. The biggest nearby population center is at Lake Tamarisk, 2 1/2 miles away. A few dozen homes cluster around a county-run nine-hole golf course. The residents are mostly “hermits,” according to one.

Copeland grew up in Eagle Mountain, moving there in 1967. He now lives in Indio, but his mother still lives at Lake Tamarisk.

“They love it out there because it’s just so quiet,” Copeland said. “The streets rolled up at 6 o’clock, but we learned to live with it.”

The lack of things to do in the Chuckwalla Valley is part of the attraction for some.

“There’s no temptations,” said Adrianna Ornales, taking a midday dip in Lake Tamarisk with other members of the Set Free church congregation. The pool at the nearby community center is dry and the center itself locked up. It was 104 degrees at midafternoon on July 30.

Ornales moved to Desert Center in 2018, along with about four dozen other members of her church, to escape the seductions of the big city.

“It’s our little safety bubble out here,” she said.

Ornales works at Lake Tamarisk’s one-room library, open three days a week, that shares a building with the small county firehouse.

She hopes Wraich can bring Desert Center back to life.

“I hope he does something with it,” Ornales said. “More job opportunities, so people can get on their feet.”

The other big population center is Lake Tamarisk Resort, a mobile home and RV park for those 55 years old and up. Many of the 150 trailers and RV spots are empty now, the snowbirds flown away to cooler climes. Once upon a time, it was a park for high-end Airstream trailers. Before that, it served the World War II era Desert Training Center first run by Major Gen. George S. Patton.

Brenda Cervantes, who with her husband has managed the resort about a year, also wants to see Desert Center revitalized.

“They need some business brought back here,” she said. “People call and say ‘Where’s your gas station?’”

The nearest one is 19 miles away, in Chiriaco Summit. Groceries mean a 50-mile trip to Blythe or Indio.

“We’re self-sufficient,” Rusche said. “That’s part of being desert people.”

Cervantes believes Desert Center can be restored without losing the quiet isolation residents enjoy.

“We’re hoping something good comes in,” Cervantes said.

But no one ends up staying in Desert Center by accident.

“We’re our own little oasis out here,” Cervantes said. “Most everyone comes here because it’s out of the way.”

Copeland has high hopes for Wraich’s Desert Center.

“I think they’ll build a big truck stop right there and maybe houses or condos for the people who work there,” Copeland said.

Rusche is skeptical. Desert Center doesn’t have its own source of potable water, she said. And the historic buildings will need to be completely torn down.

Wraich has “got a lot of hoops to jump through,” Rusche said. “He’s got to get through the county process, which is hard.”

She thinks the land is best suited for something modest.

“Why build a truck stop in California so close to the border where they can get their gas so much cheaper than they can here?” Rusche said. “To me, it doesn’t make that much sense.”

Change has come to the desert, of course. North of Lake Tamarisk, a huge solar farm has gone in. And in cooler weather, visitors race at the Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. But most days are quiet, especially during the hottest days of summer.

Whatever else might change, Chuckwalla Valley residents say the desert’s appeal is eternal.

“It’s a really tight community still,” Copeland said.

When skeptics ask him about growing up in the Chuckwalla Valley, “I say ‘how many friends do you hang out with from your high school?’ And they say none, because there were 500 people in their graduating class. I still see everyone, because there were 35 in my graduation class.”

His graduating class still gets together annually, he said.

“It would be hard for me to live anywhere else,” Rusche said. “We have freedom and we have the mountains that are a different color every time you look at them.”

But for now, the traffic on the 10 keeps racing past.

A Detroit Pizza Crawl

Last week I noticed three consecutive days without pizza tours on my schedule, so I decided to hop on a plan and jump over to Detroit, Michigan. Maybe you’ve heard of this place; it used to be THE automotive capitol of the U.S. but then hit some road bumps and is currently experiencing some major reconstructive surgery. But I didn’t go there to see the sights (although I DID hit the Motown Museum), I went there to eat the pizza. For those who grew up in the area, Detroit’s pizza is just regular old pizza. But for everyone else, pizza in Detroit is unique enough to be its own genre. I’ll get to that in a bit, but let’s start at the beginning of my short-but-tasty trip. 

Caprara Bakery 13498 Northline Rd Southgate, MI 48195

This place was recommended to me by Zane Hunt, one half of the Hunt brother duo that owns Via 313 in Austin, TX. They’re from this area and have some childhood favorites they hit every time they’re back in town. This was my first stop off the plane and it was a fun one. It’s a bakery, not a pizzeria. The history of pizza is rooted in bakeries and many still serve room-temperature slices to accompany your loaves and Italian groceries. 

This is Crystal and she’s suuuuuuper nice. She immediately knew who I was talking about when I mentioned the Hunt brothers and let me snap this pic as a “Hello!” Very sweet start to the trip!

I poked around the shelves but didn’t see any products that were terribly exciting, but it’s good to know there’s a place to get imported tomatoes and pasta if that’s what you’re into. The main event is definitely the bakery. All the breads looked decent, just like the old school bakeries in NYC and Hoboken. 

This is bakery pizza. It’s similar to grandma pizza and Sicilian pizza, but not nearly as sturdy. It’s sort of an afterthought, using leftover dough with other ingredients that are sold in the store. It’s baked in a pan and served at room temperature. The underside was extremely pale, but it wasn’t raw. I liked the tight CSR (cheese-to-sauce ratio) but didn’t love that the basic slice has pepperoni on it. I guess this is Michigan. Overall, this was a really fun stop but not essential to the Detroit pizza experience.

Frank’s Italian American Food 3144 Biddle Ave Wyandotte, MI 48192

My next stop was another recommendation from Zane Hunt. He told me this would be the last meal on earth for him and his brother Brandon. It’s a casual Italian American restaurant (aptly named restaurant) like the ones I grew up with, but their pizza is more Midwestern. The crust is thick enough to support the ample cheese and a cooked tomato sauce. What really stuck out me here was the quality pepperoni. The staff told me this isn’t a recent switch to follow the current trend of cup-and-char pepperoni, it’s the same old stuff they’ve always used. 

The pizza looks pretty standard and I was not expecting to have the same feelings toward it that the brothers Hunt foster, but I did have to hold myself back from eating a second slice. It’s funny, sometimes the pizza that isn’t technically perfect and event is exactly what you want. 

Frank’s is an old restaurant, run by the same family since 1952. The young server I spoke with seemed to know a lot about the history. It turned out her aunt is the current family member in charge of the place. The customers are also long-timers. I ran into a guy named Danny who was taking a couple small pies on his motorcycle all the way to Grand Rapids, about 2.5 hours away. 

Buddy’s Rendezvous 17125 Conant St. Detroit, MI 48212

I’m ditching the chronological reporting style for a thematic one now that we’ve taken off the edge. I always start a trip with pizzerias that are not the main attractions for the city. When I went to Phoenix, AZ a few years ago I waited until Day 2 to hit Pizzeria Bianco. Buddy’s was the first stop on my second day, but it was the most recommended pizzeria in town. This is the official birthplace of Detroit style pan pizza. The place was just a bar in 1944 but added pizza in 1946. 

Using the kind of steel pans that were manufactured for the auto industry, Buddy’s started making Sicilian pizzas. Since the pans are deeper than standard Sicilian pizza pans, the dough proofs in the pan with a more angular shape. In addition, the toppings can spread all the way to the edge of the pie, leaving behind no rim to hold. Instead, the perimeter gets a deliciously charred cheese border. Sauce is usually applied above the cheese, which is why some call this style Detroit Red Top. 

The pizza here is great. It might have even been my favorite of the entire trip. Up until now, the only Detroit style I’d had was Pi-Squared in Hendersonville, NC, Emmy Squared in Brooklyn, the related Emily in Manhattan, and a reheated Buddy’s pizza shipped to Brooklyn for a taste test (plus a few competition pizzas I judged). This has always been thought of as the benchmark and I can honestly say the description is accurate. 

I visited the original location, which isn’t in the nicest neighborhood. They even have a parking lot attendant on duty all day to make sure nobody steals your car. What service! In New York pizza terms, this is the Totonno’s to Buddys’ Lombardi’s. Does that make any sense? Gus Guerra founded Cloverleaf in 1953, but he’s the guy who brought pizza to Buddy’s in 1946. Here’s where my analogy gets a little thin. Antonio Pero was a pizza maker at Lombardi’s but the jury’s still out on whether or not he was responsible for bringing pizza there in the first place. Guerra is almost certainly the root of the Detroit pan pizza ... well, actually his wife gets the real credit. 

I heard the story from Jack Guerra, son of Gus. As he explained to me, Gus was born in San Marino, Italy (up in the north). Jack’s mother was born in the U.S., but her mother was from Sicily. Jack’s grandmother would make traditional Sicilian sfincione, a type of focaccia covered with crushed tomato, caramelized onion, and breadcrumbs. It was this recipe that became the Detroit pan pizza after Gus noticed that the thick rectangular pans used by the auto industry would work well for the dish. On top of the square shape of Detroit pan pizza, its other central characteristic is the use of Brick cheese, which forms a charred border around the pizza’s edge. Gus told me that Brick cheese was popular in the Hamtramck neighborhood of Detroit, a Polish enclave located near Buddy’s. It became a staple on Detroit pan pizzas because it was available nearby. 

When Gus left Buddy’s in 1953, he opened a new shop in the neighborhood now called Eastpointe. Gus’s kids run their own locations and the company has even started franchising. I only went to the original location so can’t speak for the others. But this place is great, although more stylized than the other spots. 

Gus’s son Jack and daughter Marie run the operation now and they were incredibly kind to spend time with me on my visit and answer questions they’ve probably gotten a thousand times before. No book or article can possibly replace the experience of hearing these stories in person. 

Loui’s Pizza 23141 Dequindre Rd Hazel Park, MI 48030

Speaking of stories, here’s yet another link in the chain of Detroit style pan pizza. Loui Tourtois opened the place in 1977 after making pizza at Buddy’s for years. He was taught by Gus Guerra, so absolutely part of the original lineage. His pizzeria is the most iconic and cozy feeling in town, with chianti bottles covering the walls and ceilings. Seriously, there are thousands of these things everywhere. But the decor isn’t nearly as interesting as the pizza.

This was my first taste of actual Detroit pan pizza. Like Buddy’s and Cloverleaf, it’s rectangular and has a border of burnt cheese. The biggest difference is that this beast is more dense than its compatriots. It felt heavier in both the hand and the stomach. I didn’t dislike this, but after tasting the others I can easily say it wasn’t my favorite. The one way Loui’s DOES win is in ambiance. It’s an old school dark room with wood paneling and stained glass -- all the things I look for in a classic midwestern pizza joint. It had a vibe like Marie’s in Chicago, only much messier. Loui’s has empty chianti bottles hanging all over the place. It feels really special in there. 

Detroit Style Pizza Company 28630 Harper Ave. Saint Clair Shores, MI 48081

Shawn Randazzo is a world champion pizza maker whose pizza I have had the pleasure of judging several times over the past decade. His specialty is the Detroit style pan pizza and that makes perfect sense knowing that he ran a Cloverleaf location for over 15 years. After leaving Cloverleaf, he opened a couple pizzerias and focused on exporting this style of pizza to the rest of the world. Now he consults for pizzerias and even sells the equipment and ingredients required to make it. 

One of the locations has transformed into a shipping center but the spot I hit is still a living, breathing pizzeria. It’s more of a take-out spot than it is a dine-in restaurant, so our pie hit the table in a box. We didn’t let it sit before popping the top and digging in. I have to tell you this pie had the most perfectly charred cheese along the perimeter. Really special. What’s really cool here is that they apply the sauce AFTER the bake. WHOA! I didn’t see that at the other spots, but suppose it’s possible since I didn’t have my head in the kitchen like I did at DSP. 

Mani Osteria 341 E Liberty St Ann Arbor, MI 48104

This wasn’t a long trip, but I saved some time for a quick jump over to Ann Arbor to see some friends and OF COURSE they wanted to meet up for pizza. That’s cool, because several people had recommended this place to me. Mani is a typical classed-up pizza joint serving neo-Neapolitan pizza from a wood-burning oven. That means that the crust is more sturdy than a typical Neapolitan pizza even though it has a lot of the same visual features. The bake is a bit longer and the flour used for the dough is often stronger than the typical low protein variety. 

The midwest usually treats pizza like a junk food but this kind of place is more of a dining experience. They use cloth napkins and have a fancy looking wood fired oven.  The pizza has blisters the way more standard Neapolitan pizzas do. I get why so many people told me to check this place out, but can’t say the pizza was exceptional in the universe of pizza. 

Amico’s Pizza 28422 Joy Rd Livonia, MI 48150

This place is special. It was recommended to me by my friend / pizza tour guide Joe Garreffa. Joe worked here when he was in high school so it holds a special place in his heart. It’s a family owned business that has been around for decades, although it moved into this strip mall a few years ago. They make both round and square pies, with their square looking more like a Sicilian than it does a standard Detroit style pan pizza. 

I had a similar feeling about this pizza that I had about the places recommended to me by the Hunt brothers. This is a total neighborhood joint. Joe’s connection to the family and their pizza keep him coming back and I think that is absolutely beautiful. Even he flinched a bit when I showed him this picture of a pie topped with canned mushrooms, but that doesn’t take away from the feeling he gets when he stops by for a pie. Sam Sifton wrote about the pizza cognition theory in Ed Levine’s book Pizza: A Slice of Heaven and I believe Amico’s to be the perfect example. The pizza you grow up eating defines the very word itself. The owners of Amico’s might not realize the incredible power they have that came from sticking around.

Supino 2457 Russell St Detroit, MI 48207

The goal of my trip to Detroit was pretty clear: to understand Detroit’s indigenous pizza style. That means I ate a ton of thick, rectangular pizza with charred cheese edges topped with cooked red sauce. I would have been perfectly happy sticking to pizzerias that fit this description, especially because I ate quite a bit of it in the 2.5 days I spent in town. But people kept offering suggestions and I found it hard to ignore all the voices imploring me to give Supino a try. So at the end of a very long day of pizza eating, which included the drive to and from Ann Arbor (plus some more pizzerias I’ll post about later), I decided to end the night with one final stop. 

Supino is another neo-Neapolitan pizzeria, slightly less upscale than Mani in Ann Arbor but more elevated in its pizza. The crust is thinner at the edge but lightly charred like all good high-temp pies should be. The ingredients on top were well proportioned and every slice had a nice balance of flavor and consistency. I don’t think I liked this as much as everybody who told me to check it out, but that might have something to do with the fact that I had crammed about a dozen pizzerias into a seriously short trip and this was the final major stop. Even so, I found the pizza to be a worthy alternative to the thick pan pies I got to know over the two days prior. 

Detroit clearly has a serous pizza scene happening right now, but I think it’s safe to say the real action is with the old school variation introduced by Gus Guerra in the 1940s. THANK YOU GUS!

But for the average blue-collar American who chooses to do this thing we do as a hobby, it can downright be impossible when times are tough. Family always comes first, but when the tight-budget purse strings allow, the ability for a family to partake as a whole—from the building of to enjoying the finished product—it’s nothing short of an amazing experience. Bruce Brunk’s tale of Hot Rod Fever is proof positive, as you’re about to read.

“I’ve been crazy about cars and hot rods since I was in junior high school. I guess it all started when my dad, Nick, bought a 1967 Chevelle that he started drag racing at the local quarter-mile dragstrip located north of my hometown of Ardmore, Oklahoma. I had ‘hot rod fever,’ even to the point of wallpapering my bedroom floor to ceiling (without my parents’ permission) with clippings from my dad’s hot rod magazines (also without permission). To say the least, he was NOT happy.

“During his years of racing, I worked with him every chance I had trying to learn everything that I could. While supporting three children and working a fulltime job, he did what he could working from a one-car garage on a shoestring budget.

“With my dad no longer drag racing and me getting my driver’s license, he handed the Chevelle down to me, which consisted of just a body and frame. Any money I earned working after school went into buying wheels, tires, interior, running gear, and so on. With the help of my older brother, Larry, and my dad, we got the car running and back on the road. After a while, I ended up returning the Chevelle to my dad and bought a motorcycle that I rode during my final year of high school.

“After high school, my car craze continued when I found a 1961 Chevy shortbed truck with a six-cylinder engine and three-on-the-tree transmission that I bought. It needed some TLC, so my friend painted it and I bought wheels and tires for it. This sealed my love for old Chevy trucks.

“This truck was eventually sold, and then in the early ’80s I bought a 1970 Chevrolet truck. This was what I was driving when I reconnected with a girl from junior high school, whom I would later marry. After we married, we sold the 1970. Because a coworker offered me decent price for the truck, I let her go.

“Within a few short years of being married, we had two daughters, Sarah and Rachel, which slowed my pursuit of my hot rod truck dreams. Even when the girls were just toddlers, I had my eye on a coworker’s 1962 Chevy shortbed truck. The day I saw it I told him them that if he ever decided to sell it I wanted first shot at buying it. Sometime later, my coworker stopped me and told me it was for sale. Without hesitation, I jumped at the opportunity and bought the truck. It was a clean, straight body truck with very little rust that ran very well. After getting it painted and then upholstered it became my daily driver.

“During this time when I was driving the 1962, I was working full time at the utility company and taking college courses in the evenings. I was commuting to attend these night classes. Sadly, at this point, the truck’s six-cylinder and three-speed meant it was just not practical. So, I had to sell the truck. Then, in 1992, I decided to pursue a pharmacy degree, so my wife and I sold our home, most of our belongings, and moved from Dallas, Texas, to Norman, Oklahoma.

“During these years, our transportation was limited to what we could afford and keep running, so buying and working on an old truck as a hobby was impossible. A friend in Norman knew how much I loved old cars and trucks, so he took me to see the cars that his father-in-law had in a shop. I’ll never forget walking into his shop and seeing two street rods that he had built: a 1933 Dodge coupe and a 1933 Dodge sedan. I knew then that after graduation from pharmacy school, I would again pursue this hobby of street rodding.

“After graduating from pharmacy school in 1997 and eventually settling back in our hometown of Ardmore, Oklahoma, I began looking for a home for my family. My wife always laughs when she tells people that I went looking for a shop that had a house that my wife might like, which is exactly what I did. After purchasing a home in 1999, I slowly began acquiring what I would need to start this hobby. I was starting from scratch; I had nothing except a small toolbox stocked with a few wrenches, ratchets, and screwdrivers. In addition to my fulltime pharmacy job, I also took on a part-time pharmacy job just to fund my hobby.

“At a Goodguys show swap meet in 1999, I spotted an original and complete 1939 Chevy coupe. A deal was made and the car was trailered home. With my dad’s knowledge and experience with old cars, we took her from a rusty, non-drivable relic to a beautiful street rod. This labor of love took us nine years, all of which were riddled with everything from our laughter to strong disagreements about the build. As soon as we finished the coupe, we started taking it to local car shows; this further fueled my hot rod fever and I knew that I still wanted to buy and build another old Chevy truck.

“In spring 2009 my wife and I went to a Pate Swap Meet in Ft. Worth, Texas. While we were there, I spotted a 1952 Chevrolet five-window truck. The truck looked sound, although not running, so we made a deal and hauled it home. Once we got the truck home and started disassembly, we uncovered more rust than we had expected. Very quickly we realized which original parts could be salvaged and reused along with which parts were too damaged to repair. Ultimately, we saved the cab, doors, hood, and frame—everything else had to be replaced.

“Whenever our schedules allowed us, Dad and I worked to disassemble the truck, label and inventory every usable part, and a made list of parts that we needed to order. After disassembling the truck we had the frame sandblasted and powdercoated. We installed a Heidts frontend, a rebuilt small-block 350 that we pulled from my dad’s 1991 Chevy Suburban, a 700-R4 transmission from Phoenix Transmissions, and a Ford 9-inch rearend from Currie mounted with a four-link from Total Cost Involved. With the rolling chassis finished, we assembled the truck using the surviving parts, new front and rear fenders, plus a new truck bed. Then, our attention turned to the truck’s body. First, Dad and I removed the original firewall and replaced it with a Bitchin’ Products firewall with a 4-inch recess, allowing us more room in the engine bay. After assembling the old and new body parts together, we began to get an idea of the truck’s stance and were able to better imagine what it would look like finished. Fortunately, he was always a phone call away when I had a question or a problem, but his absence slowed progress.

“While the truck was getting reading for bodywork, my wife and I discussed the paint color. I envisioned it being orange but she kept insisting that the truck had to be green. So, we looked at every car show we attended, in every car magazine, and even new cars on car lots in search for the perfect color. Bouncing between orange and green we finally settled on PPG Snake Skin Green. Now the truck is ready for a trip to the body shop—which turned into not one but four different shops.

“An acquaintance gave me the name of the Custom Colors body shop in Choctaw, Oklahoma, which became what was to be the truck’s first body shop stop. After a couple of months, minimal bodywork was completed when we learned that the owner had unexpectedly retired. So, we went to Choctaw, got the cab and other parts, and took them to a local Ardmore body shop owned by Kim Spiering who was willing to complete the bodywork. During this body shop stay Spiering completed the majority of the bodywork, installed door latches, primered the parts, and applied undercoating to the essential areas. It was during this time that I contacted Chris Frasher, a local painter who agreed to paint the truck. Frasher was owner of CF Designs, which was a one-man operation specializing in motorcycle painting but he agreed to paint the truck between motorcycle jobs. After leaving Spiering’s body shop, the truck went to Frasher’s shop to begin final preparation and then paint. However, the truck hood still wasn’t fitting well and needed to be fit to the cab. One day one of Frasher’s friends and a fellow automotive shop owner, Micah Newell, of Newell’s Customs in Healdton, Oklahoma, stopped by Frasher’s shop and inquired about the 1952 truck in his shop. Frasher shared that the truck was there for paint but more work was needed on the hood. Aware of Frasher’s heavy motorcycle jobs, Newell offered to tackle the truck’s hood. The Chevy was headed to her fourth body shop stop, Newell’s Customs, where Newell finished the remaining work on and mounting of the hood—then the truck was returned to Frasher’s shop for paint.

“As body and mechanical parts were painted and ready, I began assembly. This was a slow process that took the help of my family and several friends to complete. My brother, Larry, and I installed the front and rear glass. Then my son-in-law Kane Bass and daughter Sarah installed the corner cab glass. My daughter Rachel helped me connect the front fenders to the cab. After this, I tackled the wiring of the truck and finishing on the bedwood. With the wiring complete and ready for interior, my wife, Denise, and Larry helped me take the truck for upholstery to Shawn Cook, owner of Cook’s Auto Top and Trim. Before we arrived, my wife had already decided that she wanted the seats and carpet to be a rich brown color and she knew what she wanted the stitching pattern to be. In just a few weeks, Cook had installed the sound system and upholstered the truck’s interior.

“When it was time for the bed to be set on the frame, Larry, Kane, Frasher, and myself got the bed squared and mounted to the frame; then we added the rear fenders. At this point, the truck was mostly complete with minor finishing details remaining; and this put us just one week before the Goodguys show in Ft. Worth where the truck was scheduled to make its debut. Frasher and I (and my wife when we needed an extra set of hands) had a few marathon sessions finishing those last few details. (Her extra set of hands was always there throughout the nine-year build. In fact, my wife was there from start to finish all nine years, always willing to lend her hands, and she never minded crawling under the truck and getting dirty!)

“The day the 1952 Chevy truck rolled through the tunnels at Texas Motor Speedway and onto the infield there was a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment of a long nine-year process. Those guys are dead wrong, and it’s most likely because they’ve never stepped into their garage and seen their gleaming, custom-built, made-to-measure VAULT® Professional Series cabinets for the first time. If that were the case, they’d likely share the sentiments of a grateful VAULT customer calling from deep in the heart of Texas. Going Above and Beyond

Unfortunately, during installation the customer’s property was struck by a bit of misfortune when a ceiling pipe ruptured, causing significant water damage when it flooded the home. The cabinets and signs would have to be moved offsite and sat in storage for several years while the home was repaired. When it was finally time to unpack the crates and outfit the space, the cabinets, of course, were still good-as-new. The electronics in the neon signs, though, were damaged from the water. They were past their warranty date for repair/replacement, but the customer reached out anyway to have a conversation. And we were more than happy to put our legendary customer service into action:

“I’d have to give kudos to [VAULT] for going above and beyond. My project lasted about four or five years. When it got time to install there were a couple of things that needed some repair work and they fixed those without any complaints. But even though it was well past the warranty period, once I explained how they had sat and all that, the customer service portions just solidified that I had the made the right decision in choosing VAULT to do my upgrades or my upscale cabinet work.

About the Audio/Video Equipment in this Garage

When VAULT founder Chad Haas first spoke to this homeowner in an initial consultation to design his garage, the client expressed his vision for a minimalist showroom that would showcase his passions for sports cars, music (guitars) and home theater.

VAULT partnered closely with Dallas, Texas home theater company HomeTronics to give this client the unique and high-end solution he never thought was possible.  Several custom built-to-order cabinets house all of the audio visual equipment, which include a total of four mammoth California Audio Technology (CAT) 600-watt mono-block power amplifiers that weigh in at a hefty 150lbs apiece.

The solution that VAULT came up with were extra-deep (29”-deep) racks outfitted with heavy-duty 650lb capacity ball bearings to allow them to roll-out effortlessly, and with even weight distribution, despite having to carry more than 300lbs of load bearing weight from the amplifiers and other audio equipment.  The slide-out racking system allowed the HomeTronics installation team to easily access the back of each component that included articulating cable carriers to provide effective management for all cables and power cords.

“The power amps and supporting equipment to run the [CAT] speakers are exceptionally heavy, not only could the VAULT cabinets easily support the weight effortlessly, their high-end look complimented the high-tech finish of the California Audio Technology Speakers perfectly” said Greg Margolis, President of HomeTronics.

VAULT also partnered with California Audio Technology (CAT) to make sure that the cabinets matched the client’s selection of speakers and audio equipment.  In these pictures you can see that the custom equipment racks sitting between the 7-foot tall CAT loudspeakers, which:

“are built from CAT’s proprietary material MBX105 (which is similar to synthetic countertop material) and weigh in at almost 700 pounds each loudspeaker, finished with a custom owner selected color.  These loudspeakers were drawn in CAD and then custom CNC’ed to ensure precise fit and detailing.  They were then calibrated/engineered on-site for the owner’s exact listening positions and preferences much like a race car I set up for an individual driver and track at the top level. 1952 Jimmy Suburban—and/or Carryall

Some may call it a Suburban. Others may call it a Carryall. What distinguishes the difference (if there is a difference) depends upon who we ask—and/or perhaps folding seat position. Seats folded out, Suburban? Seats folded in, Carryall? We don’t know. Maybe you do, but since it doesn’t really matter, let’s not get stuck on that. Instead let’s just accept the idea that one model can be known by two names. On that note, let’s say this multi-purpose 1952 GMC Suburban can carry all—but a tune. That part is the job of its owner, blues harmonica artist Jack Nebo of Riverside, California.

Now, does anyone here believe in love at first sight? Jack and wife, Sheila, are believers. They agreed they could love the ol’ Suburban right away, as Sheila’s brother, Mike Birmingham, introduced them by lifting the cover. In and around Silverthorne, Colorado, Mike does well as a wheeler-dealer and collector of older cars and trucks. The Suburban was a recent acquisition so Mike wasn’t eager to let it go. A few months later his stance had softened. When a stranger came to his door meaning business, Mike telephoned Jack and Sheila. They confirmed that they really wanted the Surburban, which pretty much set the stage for Jack’s next steady gig—his impending four-year build.

Following its delivery to Riverside, Jack and Sheila began searching for clues as they inspected the new project. As Jack explains, “We discovered old paperwork with some history. This truck was originally a Navy ambulance. Then it became a paint truck for Los Angeles Unified School District. The truck somehow made its way to Colorado and we believe we are the fourth owners.”

Every now ’n’ then misfortune leads to good fortune. Unfortunate body damage sustained during transport led the Nebos to Scott Barnekow—proprietor of Rodco Hot Rods, also in Riverside. Their successful repairs led to more, and more, and eventually a complete reconstruction. ’Til now we haven’t talked about the ol’ Suburban’s preexisting condition. The poor ol’ Jimmy was powered by a transplanted Mopar mill—a 1973-vintage 318ci V-8 with plain-wrong drivetrain components to match. As Jack and Barnekow’s build plan came together those things topped a laundry list of things to go.

Beginning at the beginning, the ol’ Suburban’s rust-encrusted frame received some needed attention. When the dust settled, orders were placed, packages arrived, and today the finished product’s underpinnings are up-to-date. Up front suspension is all Heidts. Out back we find a Total Cost Involved four-link setup with All American coilover shocks.

This time around, power is provided by a 330-horse, 350ci Chevrolet crate motor with performance modifications by Phoenix Engine. With a little help from a 2,200-stall convertor, power is transmitted via 700-R4, prepared by SW Performance Transmissions. An all-new aluminum driveline from Inland Empire Driveline Service makes the connection to a 9-inch Lincoln Versailles rearend, freshened up in-house at Rodco.

For a proper balance of go ’n’ whoa, stopping power begins underfoot with a bolt-on pedal assembly from Classic Performance Products (CPP). Front rotors and calipers are GM, as is the master cylinder, which is now accompanied by a CPP booster. Rear rotors and calipers are reconditioned stock stuff for the midsize Versailles rearend, which tucks in nicely under the ol’ Suburban.

For the parts most folks would see, chemical stripper came into play as the main body’s secrets were exposed in-house at Rodco. The body parts that would fit in the bed of a shop truck (fenders, hood, doors, and so on) were transported to nearby Abrasive Blasting Service. From there the in-house body ’n’ paint marathon began. When that dust settled, Rodco pounder/painter Robert Montes was declared the winner. After the usual cutting, buffing, ’n’ polishing, the ol’ Suburban was resplendent in PPG Indigo Blues Metallic with a Gunmetal accent stripe ’round the body’s beltline reveal.

After a spit-shine of the new blue hue, the ol’ Suburban was ready for new glass. Barnekow’s longtime friend, Doug Shamblin, had already handled the permanent removal of the sliding quarter glass’ division bars. That was done prior to paintwork, by reworking the surrounding sheetmetal so that smoother-in-appearance single-piece quarter glass could be cut by the area’s go-to glazier Mark Chavez of American Glass Company. Adhering to the bluesy theme, Mark offered up a Liquid Blue tint, which of course fit the bill for Jack.

Meanwhile, back at Rodco, wiring tasks were tackled by longtime in-house wiring specialist Jerry Echandi. Echandi has wired more ol’ cars and trucks there than you can shake a test-light at. Some are rather complicated jobs. The ol’ Suburban was not. Even with its big, booming sound system, Vintage Air, and numerous other electrical options, the complete rewire presented no unusual challenges for Echandi. Most of it is hidden. All of it is pretty—and bulletproof to boot.

With body, paint, glass, and wiring chores all ’tended to, it was time for interior trim. The greater Inland Empire area has no shortage of trimmers. Some are very good. A few are quite well known. After careful consideration, Jack and Barnekow agreed to commission Ernie Yanez Jr. of Ernie’s Auto Interiors for the inside job. Keeping in tune with exterior cues, Jack chose two-tone gray leather, which works nicely to tie in the Gunmetal beltline accent stripe. Completing the interior is a particularly clever product of Jack’s own imagineering. Now topping a Lokar shifter is a repurposed Shure Super 55 dynamic microphone.

With interior trim finished up, tedious final assembly got underway at Rodco. Grantland radial rubber rolled into the picture and The Wheelsmith’s “Rallye” wheels received reproduction GMC ’caps. While the nearly finished project was up on the lift, in-house exotic exhaust expert Kenny Acshe bent up a custom blend of 2.5-inch tubes, Flowmaster mufflers, and his own brand electric cutouts—perhaps for added safety in the big city.

Obviously, the end result is beautiful in deep Indigo blues. If we look harder, it’s beautiful in an even deeper way. During the course of this four-year build, professionals assisted with every phase. Now at the end of the extra-long haul, Jack and Sheila Nebo are happily satisfied with everyone involved. Making friends through business is a priceless bonus—don’t you think?
