CHOOSE Purified Water Nothing is more important to you and your families health then drinking purified water. The recommended water consumption for the average person should be a minimum or 1.5 to 2.5 litres of purified water per day (1.5 to 2.5 quarts) to replace fluids used. The water you drink helps flush your kidneys of toxic substances, assists in controlling your blood pressure. The more purified water you and your family drink helps maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you don’t drink the minimum required water on a daily basis dehydration can occur when your body has less water than it requires. When your water level is just one percent below normal, you will feel extremely thirsty, at five percent below normal you will have a mild fever. One of the best ways to stay hydrated is to drink purified water. Caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, and colas are diuretics that actually dehydrate the body meaning that they use more water to process than they provide, alcoholic beverages do the same. Drinking reverse osmosis purified water is the best way to stay hydrated.Drinking enough Reverse Osmosis Purified Water can improve your health and well-being. Waterwise Water Distillers · Waterwise 7000 Series of Automatic DistillersThe ultimate in quality and convenience Each of these workhorses will keep you fully supplied with pure, fresh water—whether it’s the countertop model with 3-gallon reservoir, or the floor-standing models with either 8 or 12 gallon reservoir. The 7000 is constructed of durable stainless steel, and with one simple feed water connection, will produce up to 9 gallons a day, refilling its reservoir continuously and automatically. Best of all, by adding the optional Remote Faucet Pump System (for floor-standing models), you’ll enjoy the luxury of pure water from your refrigerator’s dispenser, icemaker, and even your sink and wetbar. Fully automatic start, fill and shutoff as with all Waterwise distillers, the 7000 combines steam distillation with carbon post-filtration, resulting in optimum water purity. The optional Carbon Prefilter System is available, which we recommend to protect the distiller’s inlet water valve from the sediment in your tap water and improve distiller function and performance. Each model has both front and side tap capabilities, so you have flexibility in optimizing the placement of your distiller.· Waterwise 8800 Countertop DistillerProgrammable convenience. You’ll love using the 8800. All you do is fill the stainless steel boiler with tap water, press the start button, and soon you’ll be enjoying the purest water possible. With the easy-to-use electronic monitor, you can program it before bed for that first cup of coffee or tea in the morning. After running a one-gallon cycle, keep a carafe in the refrigerator for a chilled glass of pure refreshment—whenever you want. Fill trays for perfectly clear and pure icecubes. Even take the 8800 along on your next trip. The portable, programmable 8800 is ready when you are! NO assembly, installation or hookups necessary As with all Waterwise distillers, the 8800 combines steam distillation with carbon post-filtration, resulting in optimum water purity. The electronic monitor with its multifunction LCD readout even alerts you when it’s time to change the filter!· Waterwise 9000 Countertop DistillerStylish form plus function. If your kitchen is the center of activity, then the 9000 will make it even more popular. Put the collector bottle on the refrigerator shelf and the kids can fill their own glasses with the push-button spigot! It couldn’t be easier for them—or you. Especially when you consider the 9000 requires no assembly, no installation and no water hookups. Simply fill the removable boiler with tap water, press the start button and replace the collector. It’s that easy. NO assembly, installation or hookups necessary As with all Waterwise distillers, the 9000 combines steam distillation with carbon post-filtration, resulting in optimum water purity. The fan-delayed start (20- minutes) feature improves energy efficiency and the distiller automatically shuts off after each 1-gallon purification cycle.· Waterwise 1600 Non-Electric DistillerNot even a power outage can stop the 1600. Ideal for camping; or as a backup for your electric distiller. Everyday preparedness brings peace of mind in the face of unforeseen emergencies. In these situations, you simply can’t beat the 1600. This all-stainless-steel distiller has no moving parts, delivers up to 16 gallons a day of pure, safe water—almost silently—with or without electricity. The two modular parts are pre-assembled, so set-up is a breeze. A countdown digital timer is included for trouble-free monitoring. (Collector bottle sold seperately) Works on virtually any heat source—gas or electric stove or hotplate, wood or coal burning stove, propane or natural gas burner, gas or charcoal grill. Mortgage Life insurance or regular Life insurance?
"Mortgage Life insurance or regular Life insurance?
My husband and I got information on Mortgage Life Insurance which basically is kind of like Life Insurance I guess and pays off your mortgage if someone dies. For example, our house is $180,000 and I die in 10 years and the mortgage balance is $80,000 then my husband still gets the original $180,000. He can use this to pay off the mortgage plus have money left over and use for whatever. This sounds like a great deal to get but I want to get other people's opinions who know information on this. It is called Forester Mortgage life insurance. Also, what is the difference between this and regular life insurance? Is regular life insurance better? Thanks!

Insurance to drive another car?
I work on a farm and I have to drive across fields and stuff to get around. Sadly, I currently have to do this in my own car so I was thinking of buying a cheap car so I don't ruin my actual car in the process. I can't leave the car at the farm, so it would need to be road legal (taxed, MOTed and Insured) Is there any insurance you can get where you can be insured on both cars but on one policy? What do you like most about tying health insurance to employment?
Isn't it a good way to keep employees in line? I mean, well, if you're not happy here, you can always quit and do something you like, but your COBRA insurance will eventually run out and you'll either need to find another job with benefits, not necessarily the job you want, so it looks like you're sticking around for some time.....no freelancing or working two part-time jobs you like for you! I like this system because it keeps my employees from quitting, particularly the ones with pre-existing conditions or family members with pre-existing conditions. I can get what I want out of them by using the health-care lasso ( go ahead and quit, but try seeing how much a private policy will cost you if you're lucky enough to get accepted with what you've got! ), plus there is no need to worry about competition from freelancers or small businesses. I like tying benefits to employment because as an employer I have a way of keeping my employees in line. If they act up or talk about branching out into something else, I just have to remind them of where they get their affordable benefits and how they would lose this corporate pool if they were to go out on their own, work for a small business without benefits, work freelance or go back to school full time. Keeps my workforce dedicated.""
What do you know about car insurance / car-totaled?
What is the law? You have a car; it is rated @ $3,800.00 book value. Another driver hits you in the rear at a Pa. borough crosswalk as you are traveling through and have stopped for a person crossing the street. You are nearly pushed into the pedestrian, but thankfully you were able to stop your car in time. The other driver is in the wrong of course; but how much does the offending driver's insurance company need to pay to fix your car? I'm having a problem - my estimate is $3,277.00. I am told to look for the car to be totaled and 80% of the book value is what the insurance company is required to pay. Does anyone know is this is true? This car is a 1999 but only has 58,000 miles on it and is in mint condition. I have owned it for 4 years and during that time have not put a penny in it for parts & repairs. To get another, I would take a great chance on getting one which is not nearly such good quality. I'm wondering if the insurance company has a maximum that they will pay for repairing - if so maybe I could add a little to it so I can keep this car? Didn't appreciate it so much until after the accident!!!!""

I'm studying abroad in China next semester and want to know if I can add my friend to my car insurance?
Since I'm studying abroad, I have to find something to do with my my car. My friend is willing to take the car while I'm gone, but I've had some complications with my insurance. I spoke with my insurance rep, and she strongly discouraged me from adding my friend onto my policy. She said since my name was on title and on the off chance he had an accident, the person involved can go after the insurance as well as my future earnings. It seems really unlikely that someone could get that much money out of the insurance and continue to go after the car owner as well, but I'm concerned. Can I have my friend sign something that will state he will pay me back for the future earnings lost if they pursue me? If so, what kind of form and what needs to be stated? Will it hold up legally? I also thought of selling my friend the car for a dollar so his name would be on the title instead of mine; however, I have a 10 year accident free discount that knocks off over $200 in insurance a year and that would disappear if I ended my coverage. I would have my family take the car while I'm gone, but I don't have family in the area. I feel the best option would be to add my friend to my current coverage and have him sign something that states he will pay me back for future earnings if there is that kind of an accident. He is willing to do both, but I don't have any idea if there is such a form I can have him sign or if I should just type something up? Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks""
Car insurance rate (red light ticket!)?
Sorry if this is too long, but i really need help! I just got a ticket for turning right on red w/o stopping in WA state. i googled and know that insurance companies don't often check driving record. unless when you make some change to your policy, make a claim or every 2 renewal cycles? my questions are: -How long does it take for my insurance company to notice this if i don't make any changes to my policy or make a claim within 3 yrs (this will stay on my record for 3 yrs right?)??? -Usually how long is ONE renewal cycle in car insurance? -If i tick the mitgation hearing option, and explain the infraction to the judge and he/she reduce my penalty, Does that mean the record will stay on me shorter? the penalty money will reduced? and hopeful insurance company will not increase my rate? -I am a student and I am cover under my dad's insurance, so if they increase my rate, does that mean the whole amount of premium increase or just my part? PS: if this help, my insurance company is American Family Insurance. I just switch to it 3 months ago.""
Mortgage Life insurance or regular Life insurance?
My husband and I got information on Mortgage Life Insurance which basically is kind of like Life Insurance I guess and pays off your mortgage if someone dies. For example, our house is $180,000 and I die in 10 years and the mortgage balance is $80,000 then my husband still gets the original $180,000. He can use this to pay off the mortgage plus have money left over and use for whatever. This sounds like a great deal to get but I want to get other people's opinions who know information on this. How long does it take for auto insurance to pay out for no-fault accident?
Hello - I was involved in an auto-accident in March of 2006 in which both insurance companies (mine and hers) agreed that it was the other party's fault and I was a zero-liability. Their insurance company (let's call them Venus , of ease) has asked for receipts ($1000 in rentals which my coverage does not cover), my deductible amount and any other amount which I had to put out (total is about $1,700). I have waited since April for them to pay me. I get letters from Venus every other week saying they are pending further investigation - but, I am at wits-end and want my money which I had to pay-out for an accident that everyone acknowledges is not my fault. Does anyone know what the law/rules are in California and how long they can take to pay after they find the other party is at fault? Also, what can I word in a strongly worded letter to get this finally paid. I dont want to hire lawyer for such a low amount - but, that extra 1700 sure would be nice at the moment. Thanks! Chris""

""Why is it that I am still able to be sued for an auto accident if I live in Florida, a no-fault state?""
I've been in 2 accidents. The first was very minor; I rolled into the bumper in the car in front of me at a stop light and scratched their bumper. No damage was sustained to my car, but I am at-fault. The second I was cutting through an intersection that was at a red light and was about to pull into the left-turn lane when the woman in the car that was coming down the lane wasn't looking forward and hit the driver side door of my car. I was already halfway in the lane trying to straighten out into the left-turn lane but I couldn't move when she was coming, because if I moved back I might have hit someone and if I went forward she would have hit me anyway. At the scene the policewoman told me I was at fault, but when I talked to my claims adjuster, she told me that there is some negligence on the other party's part because if I had just randomly pulled out into traffic, the other party would have hit the front of my car, not the driver-side door. I am being sued by the first person and I found out just now I am being sued by the person in the second accident as well. I was told that since I am registered under my parents insurance, the other party can see that they have a lot of assets they can sue for from my parents. My question is, why are they able to sue me so easily? I've done research, and I know Florida is a no-fault state, meaning drivers cannot sue each other unless serious injury occurred, such as loss of life, limb, permanent injury, etc. In both accidents, I did not get ticketed, and I believe no police report was written, only exchanges of information.(Police were called, however. I did not leave the scene) Also both of the other parties did not ask for an ambulance or medical assistance(I know about the feeling pain later thing) but I'm sure if someone was suing for something as serious that can be listed as loss of limb or death, they would have showed some indication of injury at the scene. Both people stepped out of their cars and were fine, however.""

Today an OAP came driving down a one-way carpark (trying to get my car parking space). In the process, she attempted to drive along the side of my car to get to the space, and scraped the side of my car and bumper. She said she would give me 20. But i said that i haven't got a clue how much the cost would be and im sure 20 wouldn't cover me. So she decided for us to drive to the local police station. The LSTO took both our details, and said for us to go through the insurance company, as the OAP was in the wrong and liable. When we left the police station she said she has previously written off a car earlier this year, and doesn't want to go through the insurance company! She gave me her home telephone number and said for me to get a quote and she'll pay for it. I got the quote - its 450. after she offered 20, i don't know if she will pay this amount! If we go through the insurance will i have to pay my excess. and what exactly happens!? I'm clueless!! I am fully comp...""

It is called Forester Mortgage life insurance. Also, what is the difference between this and regular life insurance? Is regular life insurance better? Thanks!

Would you be in favor of health insurance plans that cost less but force you to make lifestyle changes?
I saw somewhere that an estimated 90% of diabetes, 70% of heart disease, and 60% of cancer cases are directly related to either obesity, sedentary lifestyle, tobacco use, or drinking outside of moderation. For the amount of people that whine about drug prices, insurance costs, and drug bills, 1 out of 3 americans is overweight, something like 1 in 5 americans over 50 or 60 or something are diabetic or prediabetic (each case of diabetes costs an average of $10k per year in treatment and complications), and about 1 in 3 die of heart disease. People do not take personal responsibility for themselves, and they cost society a lot of money. Would you support an insurance plan that would be lower cost, but would drop your coverage if you developed a chronic disease like diabetes or something, and failed to get your weight down to a certain goal, mange you condition, etc. or maybe COPD and maybe you would have to quit smoking within 6 months, etc etc? Our Four Seasons 2016 Fiat 500X Gets Freaky and Laps Road America
BROOKFIELD, Wisconsin — Bobb Rayner gets to the crux of what makes Fiat freaks Fiat freaks well into his presentation at the national club’s awards ceremony Saturday night. And he does so by repeating a quote by Automobile founder David E. Davis Jr. every year at the Fiat Freakout, held this time around in metropolitan Milwaukee.
“The Germans invented the automobile. The Americans made it a dispensable product. The Italians taught it how to dance and sing.”
Can our Four Seasons 2016 Fiat 500X Trekking Plus live up to that standard? What if it dances like Elaine Benes on “Seinfeld”?
Flashback to two days earlier: I pull our orange 500X into the Sheraton Hotel Brookfield parking lot to a section cordoned off for club members’ Fiats, Alfa Romeos, and Lancias. There are more Bertone-designed Fiat X1/9s here, running the full original-to-modified spectrum, than you might have thought survived. There are nearly as many 124 Spiders, mostly the 1966 to Malcolm Bricklin mid-’80s imports, a couple of new Fiat 124 Spider Abarths, and a Barchetta brought in from Canada. Some random Lancias and Alfa Romeos. A couple of 600s, a boxy sedan or two from the ’70s, and a 1971 Zastava AR-55, a preternatural Fiat Chrysler based off the Jeep-like Fiat 1101. Probably half the lot is filled by the new generation of Fiats, especially 500s and 500 Abarths, plus two other 500Xs, one 500L, and an Alfa Romeo Giulia.
Tim Beeble, in the lab coat, left his ’74 Fiat 124 Spider at home and instead drove his green 500X from Connecticut. But he will not be our long-termer’s toughest competitor.
With no organized events this Thursday evening, just a few club members hang around. One asks, “How do you like your 500X?” The question comes up again Friday for the drive to Elkhart Lake and Road America and on Saturday morning at the Concorso. I reply with something close to, “I like the way it handles. Not crazy about the powertrain.”
Drizzle the next day forces some of the 124 Spider drivers to raise their soft tops before we reach Elkhart Lake in the afternoon so we can retrace most of the original public- road race circuit. Then it’s on to Road America for three laps before sundown.
“We’re only going to go 40, 50 mph,” our Road America pace-car driver, Bill, tells us at the drivers’ meeting. “Enjoy the scenery.”
We enter the circuit somewhere in the middle of the pack, persistent drizzle keeping the road slick. I slow down and speed up for Jessica Walker in the passenger seat. She is taking photos of other Fiats on the track. My nephew and budding car guy Jeffery Dziadulewicz is having the time of his 17 years in back, even with the enforced slow, offline pace. On this hilly, wooded 4-mile racetrack, “America’s Nürburgring,” we might not see either of the two Corvette pace cars assigned to us after the first corner. Even with 78 Fiats, Lancias, and Alfas on the track, there’s room to spread out between the two 500s behind us and the 500 and X1/9 ahead of us.
“Too slow!” Paul Perger exclaims after we finish our laps. He brought his 500 Sport, modified for autocrossing, up from Lewis Center, Ohio.
Eric Fredricks of Davenport, Iowa, went “off on the grass” with his often autocrossed 500 Abarth, “and I just got back on. There were cheers from the infield.”
On Saturday morning we arrive for the Fiat Freakout Concorso at Milwaukee’s Mitchell Park Conservatory, known colloquially as The Domes, thanks to three half-spherical glass greenhouses. Although I’m a new Fiat Club of America member, I haven’t spent much time meeting the organization’s muckety-mucks, which speaks to its casual attitude. Somewhere along the way, I shake hands with the club’s president, John Montgomery, who’s about to step down after 17 years.
Although some of the autocrossers in the Fiat Club of America wanted to go much faster, a speed limit of 50 mph or so on the spectacular 4-mile Road America circuit was plenty for most cars.
Club secretary and board member Tim Beeble is one of my two competitors in the 500X class, having driven his Verde Bosco Perla 2016 500X from Connecticut instead of his ’74 124 Spider (with 154,000 miles on the odo). On this sunny summer Saturday morning in the beer capital of the world, he’s wearing a white engineer’s lab coat and helping to usher cars into The Domes’ northeast lot. I have to pull our 500X out of formation to let in more traditional Fiats showing up later.
Pep Stojanovic’s 1971 Zastava 101 was restored in Serbia. The interior needed just a minor refurbishment. “It smells like Yugoslavia in there,” he says.
Will it hurt our chances for first place if we’re parked out of formation? What about the trim cap covering our car’s rear window wiper arm bolt that has been missing since before I drove it east from El Segundo, California?
I give my nephew a nickel tour of the Italian cars gathered, and the budding car guy quickly becomes a budding Fiat guy. He gravitates to the X1/9s, though he peeks under raised hoods and asks about every model.
I find the Concorso’s single rear-engine 500, a 1960 model. But it has oddly bulging, nonoriginal headlamps. “I’ve had lots of Italian cars,” says Frank Nezrick, a physicist from St. Charles, Illinois, while standing next to his other Concorso entry, a 1960 Fiat Abarth 750 Zagato “Double Bubble.” The bulge-headlamp 500 has a better story.
“Franklin Roosevelt’s son brought it in for his race team,” Nezrick says. The feds told him its factory headlamps were too low for U.S. specifications, so the little car would either have to go back to Italy or face the crusher. “I don’t care if your father is president,” a bureaucrat had added sarcastically.
Alfa Romeos and Lancias are also invited to join the Fiat Club, including Dale Gordon’s award-winning, 25,000-mile 1977 Lancia Scorpion.
Dale Gordon, an anesthesiologist from Libertyville, Illinois, lobbies for my People’s Choice vote as I approach his 1977 Lancia Scorpion.
“One of 387 of the 1977 models sold in the U.S., 1,755-cc engine,” he says. “First flush windshield, only 1,801 made in 1976 and ’77. It’s got 25,000 miles. I’ve never opened the [targa-style] roof. I’m afraid to.”
A couple of boxy malaise-era Fiats actually are Soviet-era models built under license that belong to Pep Stojanovic, who runs commiecars.com. His 1971 Zastava 101, essentially a Fiat 128 hatchback, was restored in Serbia. The interior needed just a minor refurbishment.
“It smells like Yugoslavia in there,” he says.
Michael Louviere drives his ’52 Topolino around town and on dirt roads in Anamosa, Iowa. He proves a keen observer of the Fiat community, so I ask him whether X1/9 and 124 Spider owners ever switch sides.
“It’s not unheard of, but it’s typical for people to be in one of the two categories,” Louviere says. “Spider guys sometimes dabble in X1/9s. X1/9 people typically don’t go to Spiders.”
Spider fan Laura Ives has never switched. She bought her 1972 Fiat 124 ragtop in 1973.
“It was between an MG, because my family is British, and a Fiat,” she says, sitting between her husband, Richard, and me at the Fiat Freakout Awards Banquet Saturday at the Sheraton Brookfield. “The Fiat gearbox was easier than the MG’s. I loved it.”
From left, winners of second, first, and third place in the 500X class line up. Below, Fiat Club co-founder Bobb Rayner says, “Buy a car, get an award.” And we do.
The Ives couple, from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, joined the Fiat Club of America in 2001 in order to attend their first Freakout in Grand Island, New York. Metro Milwaukee marks their fourth such event. Ives rejects the Italian brand’s reputation for poor reliability.
“As the car gets older, it’s good to meet other people trying to source parts,” she says. “I guess I’m lucky. The hardest parts to find are 13-inch tires.”
The Fiat Club of America is Eastern U.S.-centric, with most members living on that side of the Mississippi River or in Ontario or Quebec. Bobb Rayner, the awards ceremony emcee, co-founded the club with Dwight Varnes in Hagerstown, Maryland, in 1982, reacting to Fiat and Alfa Romeo’s impending withdrawal from the U.S. market.
Rayner, a presenter on home shopping channel QVC, gets to the heart of an enthusiast brand that’s within reach of virtually any driver.
“We don’t care how shiny and fast and expensive your car is.”
This warms my cold auto journo heart. It might be a cliché or even a stereotype, but it’s clear even from commodity products such as Fiat that Italy’s efficient, modern auto industry thrives with a workforce that knows how to take a good lunch break. Likewise, the Fiat Club of America draws sociable people who know how to throw a party more than they care about how to perfectly restore a car.
With that, the Fiat Club awards seven individuals and 53 of the 124 cars entered in the 2017 Concorso.
Ives’ ’72 takes second place among the 1966-’74 124 Spiders, Louviere’s patinated Topolino gets the Most Challenged award, Stojanovic’s Zastava 101 wins the Fiat Del Mondo class, and Gordon’s Scorpion takes first in the Fiat/Lancia Sport class. The Car I’d Most Like to Drive Home is Mark Rowan’s 1967 Fiat Dino coupe, and the People’s Choice for Best of Show goes to Nezrick’s Zagato “Double Bubble.”
In the Fiat 500X category—“Buy a car, get an award,” Rayner quips—Bryan Reiners of Hartford, Wisconsin, takes first with his tastefully decaled white XUV, Beeble’s emerald green car gets second, and Automobile’s Arancio Four Seasons car is awarded third. Ours proved shiny, though neither fast nor expensive. I should have replaced that wiper arm cap.

An Orange 2017 Land Rover Discovery Joins the Four Seasons Fleet
Through the many badges it’s worn here in America since launching here in 1994, the Land Rover Discovery has played an undeniable role in the early seeds of SUV mania. Even after the Disco name was dropped for North America in 2004 with the launch of the third-generation model in favor of the LR3 moniker (which evolved to LR4 years later with the launch of the fourth-gen), the iconic SUV endeared itself to would-be adventurers as a tantalizing mixture of rugged grit and upstanding British appeal. And although the original name is back, this new, fifth-generation model brings with it host of changes that, for better or worse, shake up the tried-and-true Discovery formula. To get a better handle on just what the new 2017 Land Rover Discovery is made of, we snagged one for our Four Seasons fleet.
Automobile’s first-ever Four Seasons test with a Land Rover featured a 1996 Discovery. That tough-as-nails off-roader was adored for its fearsome capability but mistrusted for its constant quality issues, large and small, earning it a dismal 2.5 stars out of 5. Land Rover went back to the drawing board for the LR3, updating everything from the pushrod V-8 to the frame, suspension, and styling language. With its vastly improved driving dynamics, ergonomics, and interior packaging (the rear seats actually folded flat), our test of the 2005 LR3 earned a much-improved 4 stars. Still, quality gremlins endured, and the freshly introduced DOHC 4.4-liter V-8 was neither powerful nor torque-rich enough to overcome the LR3’s ample heft.
For 2017, the all-new Discovery addresses all of these shortcomings, and more. While the boxy utilitarian styling may be gone, so is much of the Disco’s muffin top. Not only is the new aluminum unibody up to 1,000 pounds lighter than the steel structure it replaces, under the hood is the oil-burning engine we’ve envied from afar for years. We eagerly ticked the box for Land Rover’s 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6, the first offered in a U.S.-market Discovery, and have so far been pleased with the 254 hp and juicy 443 lb-ft of torque it offers. (Gas-powered models use a 340-hp supercharged 3.0-liter V-6.)
Barely a week passed before we took it for its first cruise, up from Detroit to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, where the Disco effortlessly towed a 16-foot fishing boat on a trailer. The new eight-speed automatic transmission works especially seamlessly on the highway, where it helps the 4,916-pound seven-seater return an EPA-rated 26 mpg. On several long hauls, however, we’ve managed as much as 28 mpg with a cargo area full of luggage.
In addition to the diesel engine, we added a laundry list of options to ensure we had the full Land Rover mix of luxury and capability. The top-spec HSE Luxury trim comes nicely outfitted with everything from air suspension to heated 16-way power seats with Windsor leather upholstery, Espresso wood trim, a fantastic Meridian premium sound system, keyless entry, Bluetooth, navigation within the latest 10.2-inch InControl Touch Pro interface, and front/rear parking aids. On top of that we kitted our Rover out with the Drive Pro package, adding adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with Queue Assist, and lane-departure warning ($2,350). Additional side cameras and LED headlights with automatic high beams come on the Vision Assist package ($1,000), while other pieces of tech like autonomous emergency braking ($125), a color head-up display ($950), a 360-degree parking aid ($275), automatic park assist ($800), and a full-on rear-seat entertainment suite ($2,270) have to be ordered a la carte.
On the more practical side of things, we made sure to include the Capability Plus package to get the active rear locking differential and Terrain Response 2 system ($1,250), a tow package ($650), roof rails ($400), and a full-size spare wheel and tire ($440). All told, our fully built-out family-hauling, rock-crawling, diesel-drinking, beverage cooling ($350) British behemoth rings in at an eye-watering $79,950.
So far, the Discovery has racked up more miles in such a short time than any Four Seasons vehicle in recent memory. Just two months into our test we’ve piled on 6,640 miles, putting it on pace to be one of the most driven Four Seasons testers on record. In short order we’ve adventured from Automobile’s Detroit bureau to Buffalo, Grand Rapids, two trips to Sault Ste. Marie, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Mackinaw City, Michigan. We’ve also spent a sunny afternoon off-roading at the Bundy Hill off-road park, where the Discovery’s raised air suspension, selectable terrain drive modes, hill-descent control, low-speed all-terrain cruise control, and low-range transfer case proved a Swiss Army knife of off-road guts in sand, dirt, and gravel. Once Michigan winter hits, we’ll be ready for the worst of it with a good set of winter rubber.
Though the Discovery has won praise for its capability, fuel economy, and utility, it is not without its detractors. Anglophile and contributing writer Marc Noordeloos wishes for better body control and a smoother ride, as well as a return to the bulkier styling of old. “I miss the near-timeless look of the old LR4,” he says. “This new Discovery has a bit of a hunchback going on and I can’t say I’m sold on the switch from a split tailgate to a fold-down.” Detroit bureau chief Todd Lassa, meanwhile, is often frustrated with the delayed throttle response. “The slow, clumsy tip-in makes me lose confidence when I need to merge into traffic. At least the interior leather and wood make the interior feel like a private London club,” notes Lassa.
Following a blissfully trouble-free Four Seasons test of a 2015 Jaguar F-Type S, we had hoped Land Rover’s infamous reliability woes were over, but we’ve already been somewhat disabused of that notion. It began with an improperly fitted A-pillar black trim piece, but since that small repair, we’ve also experienced random and unexplained tire-pressure monitoring warnings despite correct pressures (an issue we’ve also seen on our Four Seasons Jaguar F-Pace), lurching and bucking from the powertrain after cold starts, and (by far the most odd) – a rear three-quarter window that isn’t tinted to match the others. Perhaps most annoying have been the freezes and bugs with the infotainment system, which could really use Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity as well as voice-recognition technology. Even when everything is working, the system is simply not intuitive to use. When a friend and professional web and user-experience designer happened to be sitting shotgun, he was surprised how difficult it was to sift through various menus to access key functions. The satellite radio also frequently cuts out due to a weak signal, while the media player interface gets easily confused when connecting devices via Bluetooth and USB at the same time.
Has Land Rover has finally made a Discovery that’s both rugged and reliable for the daily grind? While it’s most certainly grown from its 1989 roots as a bare-bones all-terrain terror to a stylish, family-friendly people-mover with nine (!) USB ports, such a question remains open. When the Discovery’s four seasons are up, we’ll know if this third-gen is the charm.

David Norton’s turbocharged 2002 Lincoln: What a Luxury Performance Car Should Be
David Norton’s 900-horsepower wide-body Lincoln LS is an “if only” car. Imaginary auto executives fantasize, “if only they would let me build cars like that, I could fix Lincoln!” New car dealers dream, “if only they would ship me some of those, I could charge double the MSRP!” And the tetchy bean counters, anonymous committee persons, and bus-riding bureaucrats gleefully posit, “if only I could veto such outrageous, expensive engineering excess!”
Showroom-stock 2000 to 2006 Lincoln LS sedans did not typically spark such passionate thoughts. Sharing the DEW98 platform and engines with a forgettable Jaguar in Ford’s ill-fated Premium Auto Group (and in 2002-05 with the flaccid revival of the two-seat boulevardier Ford Thunderbird), the Lincoln LS was supposed to make a generation of young Europhiles forget about decades of Continental Mark-series mobile isolation chambers.
Although the LS triggered a round of nasty attorney letters between Toyota and Ford over whether anyone would confuse it with Lexus LS400s, the car did too little to shake young junior executives and fashion-plates out of their 5-series BMWs. In an age when average soccer moms wanted high-riding equipment for the Rubicon trail, and dads wanted to pretend the daily traffic jam was on the King Ranch, the underpowered Lincoln LS just never broke through the clutter. Then, as part of Ford’s “Way Forward,” the no-fun committee bureaucrats and penny-pinching bean counters killed it in favor of a cheaper, V8-less, front-wheel-drive Ford platform.
An LS was not David Norton’s first choice for a souped-up Lincoln. Norton, proprietor of SPEC Clutch in Bessemer, Alabama, has a history of building hot road-course iron, including a wide-body Porsche 944 turbo, a 700-horsepower Nissan 240, and an equally powerful BMW 135. Yet his initial conception for a “hot rod Lincoln” trended more toward Kennedy Continentals. “I sought but could not find a decent mid-‘60s coupe,” Norton reported.
Norton switched his attention to the lithe Lincoln LS. Norton admired the lines of Helmuth Schrader’s German-inspired design. “These chassis have a good wheelbase and rigidity for handling bigger power, and feature a 50/50 weight distribution,” Norton explained. Another advantage was that Norton found a one-of-2,331 LS equipped with a Getrag 221 five-speed manual transmission, which reduced the amount of fabrication necessary to fit the TKO600 gearbox behind the turbocharged Terminator DOHC V8 that the car should have had to start with.
An old friend who had been part of a defunct effort to campaign a Lincoln LS in Sports Car Club of America World Challenge racing supplied the final parts of the design. Norton took some broken, one-off fiberglass body components and shirt monogram artwork left over from the racing project, and had the wide-body design revamped for molding in featherweight carbon fiber. Norton’s team added a new carbon fiber hood, doors, bumpers and side skirts to complete “what we imagined a race car would look like.”
The final result is hotter than anything Bill Stroppe, Fran Hernandez, and Clay Smith came up with back when Ford could be bothered to actually race Lincolns. “It is very reliable and handles power better than ever imagined,” Norton said. “It is easy to drive, gets great fuel mileage, and is comfortable. Just what one would expect from a Lincoln.” It is an “if only” car indeed – with no Mathew McConaughey stream of consciousness existentialism necessary.
Tech Notes
Who: David Norton What: 2002 Lincoln LS Where: Bessemer, AL
Engine: Woodstock, Ontario, Canada’s Sean Hyland literally wrote the book on Modular Ford V8 performance (How to Build Max-Performance 4.6-Liter Ford Engines (Cartech, 2003)), so when Norton decided to consign the powerless Jaguar AJ 3.0 V6 to the wastelands, Sean Hyland Motorsports (SHM) got the call. In the end, SHM supplied a balanced 0.020-over Ford Terminator DOHC V8, displacing 283 cubic inches. A quartet of SMH 2723 camshafts, featuring 0.482/0.470 lift and 225/235 degrees of duration at 0.050-inch, conduct the battle symphony from atop ported SHM race four-valve heads with 52cc chambers. From the inside, the SHM Terminator block houses an OEM forged Ford crankshaft, Manley Pro Series I-beam rods, and boost-friendly Manley 11cc dish pistons. ARP head studs clamp down MLS head gaskets from the rebellion of 25 pounds of turbo boost. A mid-frame Borg Warner S400 75mm turbocharger, exhaling into a Sullivan EFI intake manifold brings Norton’s Terminator one step closer to serious horsepower. Breaking the habit of detonation, boost is chilled through a custom charge air cooler based on a Spearco core. Custom stainless steel 1.5-inch primary headers supply spent gas drive to the turbo. A Big Stuff 3 engine controller barks electronic orders to ID1050x injectors, dual Turbosmart Compgate 40 wastegates, and crank-triggered LSx coils on MSD Power Grid brackets. NGK TR6 spark plugs touch off the power making conflagrations. With an Evans water pump, SPAL dual 11-inch electric fans, and a Mocal oil cooler, Norton is less likely to burn it all down. Squelching unwanted sounds are a pair of Borla Shootout mufflers on 3.5-inch stainless steel exhaust pipes.
Transmission: Norton pulled a SPEC PT Trim Super Twin clutch and SPEC forged billet aluminum flywheel from his company’s stock and surrounded them with a Quicktime bellhousing. The SPEC clutch feeds the outpouring of SHM turbo power to a Pro Motion TKO 600 five-speed manual transmission, into a Driveshaft Services custom 4-inch driveshaft.
Rearend: Instead of waiting for the end of the light duty, OEM independent rear suspension, Norton had Barry Trivette and Harry Robinson of Robinson Racing Enterprises fabricate a custom four-link and Panhard bar, and fit in a lightweight Moser 9-inch Ford axle. The husky axle contains 3.50:1 final drive and hardened Moser axles.
Suspension: QA-1 Coilovers suspend all four corners of Norton’s Lincoln. Spherical links and polyurethane bushings firm up the OEM front and rear sway bars. The balance of the suspension and steering are Lincoln Wixom factory-issue.
Wheels/Tires: Stanley Chen of Toyo Tires supplied wide Toyo Proxes T1R tires in 235/35R19 (front) and 315/25R19 (rear) sizes to Norton’s wide-body project. Vincent Wong of I-Forged Wheels provided I-Forged Fortune 19×9.5 and 19×12 wheels to replace the spindly 17×7 Lincoln LS stockers.
Paint/Body: Lincoln ran out of clever names for the clearcoat black hue that cloaks the iridescent, custom dry carbon fiber wide body built by Goolsby Customs of Bessemer, AL. No castle of glass, the LS dry carbon fiber body parts are as much as 70% lighter than even lightweight wet carbon fiber without leaving out any strength. Goolsby Customs relocated the rear door jams to fit the Lincoln’s new wide look. A Fuel Safe fuel cell with a Sparco locking fuel door keeps the hydrocarbons-in-waiting secure.
Interior: Most “if only” enthusiasts will view the inside of Norton’s Lincoln as “somewhere I belong.” Augmenting the factory Lincoln leather-lined luxury is a custom Dakota Digital instrument package integrated into the OEM cluster. A Clarion NX706 head unit with an Arc Audio XDi 1200.6 amplifier, Arc Audio 6.2 and 5.2 components and two Arc Audio XDi 12D4 subwoofers, helping the listeners go numb. Performance: The potency of Norton’s Lincoln LS is not for the faint, with 900 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 825 lbs/ft of torque at 5,500 rpm available at the wheels. Off-boost fuel economy checks in with a miserly 17 city/26 highway mpg. Top speed is drag limited to an estimated 200 mph.
