Important Understanding TDS and Water Quality

Our Health-Metric TDS meter is often used to measure the “purity” of the filtered water. It is important to understand what TDS measurements mean. TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) is a measure of all the dissolved substances in your water. TDS does not distinguish between “good” and “bad” substances. TDS is not a measure of safe or unsafe water. The results of a TDS measurement may be “Great!” for one application and “Not so good” for another. Let’s pretend a water supply has a very low TDS level of about 30 ppm. An orchid grower would be very happy to mist her plants with this water.The mist would not leave unsightly mineral deposits on the orchid leaves and flowers.

A swimming pool owner would be very unhappy if his water supply was this low. He would have to add quite a bit of calcium and alkalinity-boosting chemicals to properly increase the mineral level in the swimming pool. Don’t make the mistake of think high TDS means bad water. A tropical reef ecosystem, teeming with colorful fish and coral, has a TDS level of about 35,000 ppm! From these examples, we learn that “good TDS levels” are relative and depend on what the water is used for.We’ve compiled a list TDS levels from a wide range water supplies and uses. The TDS levels are based on what the water is used for or where it comes from.

• Coffee brewing – 75 to 250 ppm • Tea brewing – 50 to 150 ppm • Pools and Spas – 1000 to 3000 ppm • Steam ironing – 0 to 30 ppm • Car wash – 5 to 30 ppm • Thermal spas – 300 to 46,000 ppm • Injectable drug – 0.00 ppm • Pickle brine – 30,000 ppm • Bottled water – 16 to 300 ppm • Mineral water – 3000 ppm • Distilled water – 0 ppm • Hydroponic tomatoes –1400 to 3500 • Window washing – 10 to 15 ppm • Niagara Falls – 132 to 509 ppm • Amazon River – 2 to 10 ppm

As you can see the ideal TDS level depends on what the water will be used for. A pharmaceutical manufacturer must use ultra-pure “zero” TDS water for an injectable drug. However, a healthy bottled mineral water can have up to 3,000 ppm TDS. Distilled water should have close to zero TDS. Yet bottled spring water may a TDS level over 300 ppm.

In general super-purified water (distilled, deionized, reverse osmosis) will have almost no TDS. Drinking water that contains minerals and salts will have a much higher TDS. Both types of water are safe to drink but will provide different results when used in preparing food preparation, cleaning and other uses. The Health-Metric TDS meter is a valuable tool for testing the nature of a water source. The important thing to know is what the desired TDS level is and compare your test results to that figure.
