HOW OLD IS PHOENIX A* BLACK HOLE??
Blog#380
Saturday, March 2nd, 2024.
Welcome back,
Black holes are the most massive objects that we know of in the Universe. Not stellar mass black holes, not supermassive black holes (SMBHs,) but ultra-massive black holes (UMBHs.) UMBHs sit in the center of galaxies like SMBHs, but they have more than five billion solar masses, an astonishingly large amount of mass. The largest black hole we know of is Phoenix A, a UMBH with up to 100 billion solar masses.
How can something grow so massive?
UMBHs are rare and elusive, and their origins are unclear. A team of astrophysicists working on the question used a simulation to help uncover the formation of these massive objects. They traced UMBH’s origins back to the Universe’s ‘Cosmic Noon‘ around 10 to 11 billion years ago.
Their paper is “Ultramassive Black Holes Formed by Triple Quasar Mergers at z = 2,” and it’s published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The lead author is Yueying Ni, a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Astrophysics/Harvard & Smithsonian.
“We found that one possible formation channel for ultra-massive black holes is from the extreme merger of massive galaxies that are most likely to happen in the epoch of the ‘cosmic noon,'” said Ni.
UMBHs are extremely rare. Creating them in scientific simulations requires a massive, complex simulation. This is where Astrid comes in. It’s a large-scale cosmological hydrodynamical simulator that runs on the Frontera supercomputer at the University of Texas, Austin. Astrid’s large-scale simulations can track things like dark matter, temperature, metallicity, and neutral hydrogen.
Simulations like Astrid are ranked by the number of particles their simulations contain, and Astrid is at the top of that list.
“The science goal of Astrid is to study galaxy formation, the coalescence of supermassive black holes, and re-ionization over the cosmic history,” said lead author Ni in a press release. (Ni is a co-developer of Astrid.) A powerful tool like Astrid needs a powerful supercomputer. Luckily, UT Austin has the most powerful academic supercomputer in the USA.
“Frontera is the only system that we performed Astrid from day one. It’s a pure Frontera-based simulation,” she explained.
Astronomers know that galaxies grow large through mergers, and it’s likely that SMBHs grow more massive at the same time. But UMBHs are even more massive and much rarer. How do they form?
The team’s work with Astrid delivered an answer.
“What we found are three ultra-massive black holes that assembled their mass during the cosmic noon, the time 11 billion years ago when star formation, active galactic nuclei (AGN), and supermassive black holes, in general, reach their peak activity,” Ni said.

Greater Toronto Hockey League: Where NHL dreams begin
Jack Hughes calls this a "lifestyle." He is the second of three brothers who moved from New Hampshire to Toronto about 10 years ago, when their father, Jim, landed a job in the Maple Leafs organization. His father was director of player development for the Maple Leafs most recently and now works for CAA Sports. "I love it up here," Hughes said. "I don't think my brothers and I would be half the players we are if we didn't come up here." Hughes remembers nights when he would watch his older brother, Quinn, play a GTHL game at 7 p.m., then stay at the rink to watch McDavid play a GTHL game at 9 p.m. Even then, he would try to pick up whatever he could from McDavid's game and think about following his example. "It opens your eyes a little bit, you know what I mean?" he said. "Just to see the guys that have come before you." Now his older brother is playing for the USA Hockey's National Team Development Program Under-18 team and committed to the University of Michigan, and he is a 15-year-old forward with the Toronto Marlboros and a top prospect himself, headed in the same direction. As much as he is on the ice, Hughes wouldn't come off it after the GTHL Top Prospects Game. He lingered to take pictures with his teammates, soaking up the moment, smiling. When he finally headed toward the locker room, reporters asked if he wanted to undress before giving interviews. He said no. He was fine. He was in no hurry to take off his hockey gear. "I think you've just got to live it, right?" he said. "It's all the time. It's always on your mind, whether you're in school or anything. I mean, hockey's everything. Everyone just wants to be the best player they can be. "Once you see these guys, you think you can be a part of it, because you're going through the same system they are. I mean, I believe it's the best league in the world, minor hockey league in the world. Just to play with the same uniform as guys like McDavid, Tavares, it's just so special every night."

Because I’m insane I decided to watch Fanboy and Chum Chum for the lore. Just watch the entire series and see what I can find.
Especially since Fanboy and Chum Chum are connected to Glitch Techs, with both shows being a part of the same multiverse. Just in Glitch Techs, smaller elements like the Freezy Mart exist in the show AND Fanboy and Chum Chum themselves are confirmed to exist as their names appear on the scoreboard in the Hinobi Smash competition, which means that Fanboy and Chum Chum do exist, but they probably go by their real names in the Glitch Techs universe and “Fanboy and Chum Chum” are just gamertags.
Things I have learned so far (just finished season 1):
This is a completely very different timeline and universe compared to Glitch Techs or our universe as comparison. Many things are different.
For example, the USA in this universe only has 8 states. For reference, the US was originally settled with 9 states, so at some point in time they lost one.
Fanboy and Chum Chum takes place in 2004. Glitch techs takes place in 1998.
Fanboy and Chum Chum’s real names are Tobias and Edmund.
Fanboy is anywhere from 17-18 years old. Chum Chum is (seemingly) two years younger at 15-16 years old. This is because they’re in 5th Grade (5th Graders are usually 10-11 years old) and Fanboy mentions that they’re been held back for 5 years, including the current year. Fanboy specifically also mentions being held back twice in kindergarten, but that’s exclusive to him.
All of the weird stuff Fanboy and Chum Chum can do comes from Chum Chum. Chum Chum has the power and Fanboy can also use it because he’s Chum Chum’s best friend. Oz is also friends with Chum Chum and can do similar things, but to a lesser degree because he’s not as close to Chum Chum as Fanboy. Yo gains Chum Chum-like abilities basically as soon as Fanboy temporarily gives Chum Chum to her, and on top of that Fanboy seemingly loses his abilities until he’s reunited with Chum Chum. Chum Chum is the source of like 90% of the show’s weirdness.
Fanboy is a Lance Corporal, aka the highest non-enlisted rank of the us military.
The Norse gods are real in this universe. I’m not kidding.
With the previous information, Chum Chum is very likely a Norse giant. I’m also not kidding.
Fanboy and Chum Chum both have glass eyes. Fanboy’s left and Chum Chum’s right eyes are fake. My personal conspiracy theory is that Chum Chum pulled an Odin some time in the past (as Odin is a real person who actually exists in this universe) and sacrificed one of his eyes for forbidden knowledge and that’s why he’s so powerful. Fanboy may have done the same as a sort of blood oath to his and Chum Chum’s friendship, hence why he has access to so much of Chum Chum’s power.
The creators of Fanboy and Chum Chum must have already had the idea for Glitch Techs even when this show was first being made. You can find all sorts of stuff in here that connects to the 2015 Pitch Bible for Glitch Techs. Yo’s Tamagotchi has a character identical to Chomp Kitty on it, characters that look extremely similar to Five and Miko’s Pitch Bible designs show up in an in-universe commercial, hell a character that looks extremely similar to Agent 68, a character who is only found in the Glitch Techs Pitch Bible (Either getting remade into Inspector 7 or even the Tech Inspector in “I’m Mitch Williams” later during development or being someone who would have appeared in season 3) shows up physically. They had the ideas all there to begin with.
Hinobi as we know it in Glitch Techs doesn’t exist in the way that we know it, but it does exist under a different name and purpose. Instead of Hinobi the video game company, it’s a (so far unnamed) Toy Company (that also owns the Frosty Mart in some way). My logic here is that:
Chomp Kitty on a tamagotchi. Obviously.
That character that looks like Agent 68 is an “Agent” of the unnamed toy company, in this case an inspector sent to reclaim some recalled toys. He’s also the head of security for the Frosty Mart’s company, so the Frosty Mart is probably owned by this alternate reality Hinobi in some way.
The few arcade machines and video games seen so far work perfectly fine, but many toys, especially any toy with mechanical parts have a tendency to break and act somewhat similarly to glitches.
There’s an episode where that Chomp Kitty Tamagotchi breaks and Fanboy and Chum Chum attempt to repair it by throwing it into a grave that’s been said to fix stuff that’s been left there. This results in the toy basically Glitch Techs style glitching and repeatedly trying to kill Fanboy and Chum Chum. Hell once they destroy the Tamagotchi completely a ghostly version of it almost identical to a Glitch from Glitch Techs forces itself through their TV. It’s even easily distracted by stuff from its original tamagotchi game like a glitch would be.
So my theory is that Hinobi in this universe is a toy company. Their toys can be extremely dangerous under the right conditions, especially if something goes wrong and they glitch in some way, Fanboy breaks the arm off of a robot toy by accident and every other robot in the area tries to kill him for example, and that Tamagotchi specifically is so much closer to a glitch techs glitch because it’s the closest this alternative universe Hinobi has to a video game.
Again, I am completely insane.
#fanboy and chum chum#glitch techs#I will add pictures later#I’ll also I’ll add any other things I’ve discovered or theorized.#as I remember or discover them

Please look into Claudia De la Cruz! She's a 2024 USA presidential candidate with the Party for Socialism and Liberation and she is actively trying to help Palestine. If you like her, please help spread her name!
Thank you anon for bringing her to my attention. After some research here are a few things I like about Claudia De la Cruz's campaign.
She wants to seize the top 100 companies and make them public property in order to reinforce the American economy.
She wants to enforce a rent cap, capping out at 10% of a person's income.
SHE WANT'S UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE
She wants to cut the military budget by 90%
She believes in abortion
She is pro-LGBTQIA+
She and the person running for VP with her are both women
Here are a few things I don't like:
The language on her website is very vague, talking about things they stand for, but not how those things can be changed
There is no plan or explanation of how they plan to win the election
They are running as socialists, which of course makes it exponentially harder to be elected
I love what she stands for, but I worry she talks a bigger game than she can bring.

TATMR Rewatch
Saw this post appear on my dash again and felt like rewatching the movie again. Thoughts while rewatching a twenty-four year old film about magic talking trains included below.
Btw, if you want to watch this fever dream for yourself, the whole thing is on Youtube w/ ads:
youtube
Starting off and- hey it's Diesel 10! You remember Diesel 10, right? What a "blast from the past," right? Right?
I miss the hammy, over-the-top New Jersey accent they gave Diesel in this movie. The slimy, manipulative voice they gave him later on is fine, but c'mon, the guy's got a giant claw coming out of his back. There's nothing subtle about him. Give us our big dumb tantruming baby back!
Interesting to see Gordon shake w/ fear after seeing Diesel, considering how much flak people gave the last couple seasons of the show over the engines 'gesturing' w/ their bodies (same w/ Thomas sneezing later on).
The two ends of the universe: Anytown, USA and a remote island off the coast of England (I know its implied that Sodor is part of a separate magical dimension in this movie, hush).
That said, filming in the rustic British countryside really doesn't scream America:
Also what's that line about Shining Time being separated from Sodor by "oceans of time"? Dym like time zones (crossing the Atlantic) or time travel? The show is canonically set in the 50s-70s, afterall.
It's a shame that they didn't use the original Shining Time theme for the introductory shot. Not sure if it'd fit, but it's still a shame. Include it during the credits at least.
Oh, that fish is not having a good time.
Stacy Jones! c:
Billy Twofeathers (wdym he aways looked like that, hush)! c:
S/o to James' androgynous voice in this movie.
Diesel 10 is going to dominate you... sorry.
I know they recut this movie after audience testing, but it is odd having the mystery of the lost engine w/ Burnett's backstory revealed to the audience right at the beginning of the movie, only for it to continue being treated as a mystery by the rest of the cast until the climax.
That said, they still did an admirable job w/ it, considering they cut out one of the main antagonists. There's a few repeated story beats (Burnett and Diesel giving Lady's backstory back to back) and lines that don't quite work (Burnett telling Diesel, the magic talking train, he'll fail bc he "doesn't believe in magic"), but nothing too distracting.
Jumping from that slow, melancholic scene w/ Burnett to Diesel w/ his fucking goofy theme playing is fantastic.
Mr. C Humming the OG theme tune is a really cute touch.
Free Moby Dick!
"Stacy, where did you find this painting?" Mr. C, I'm pretty sure that's a drawing.
I can't get over Baldwin chewing the scenery in this movie, he's just constantly goofing off in front of the camera, picking up and talking to random props. I know all of it is prob in the script, it is a kid's film after all, but its just so silly that I love it.
I like the implication that Burnett was just a kid that Mr. C talked to and chose to entrust w/ Lady's secret, just like all the kids he'd (well, another Mr. Conductor), interact w/ on Shining Time.
Lily! c:
Bluebird! c:
Now there's the America I know! Cars everywhere!
I remember too many of these lines.
The scene w/ the angry painting of Topham calming down each time they cut back to it after Mr. C puts back the hat was and still is the best one in the movie imo.
Lady Hatt's portrait is still just one of the wooden figures lmao.
I have a deep-seated memory of constantly repeating the scene of Mr. C reflexively batting the ball he was just roleplaying w/ out of his hand and scolding it.
Nvm the scene of Diesel busting through the shed wall still goes hard as hell, esp. when Mr. C's magic starts failing (same for all of Diesel's action scenes tbh).
Here it is, the infamous sugar scene:
Also that face. :O
Jesus, why did they put this scene into the movie?
Hearing Stacy say that and start sobbing is genuinely upsetting.
I didn't even notice the railway (sorry, railroad) got replaced w/ a road in this scene.
It's interesting to think about how in the workprint, an older Lily was the narrator, meanwhile Mr. C would still out here constantly breaking the fourth wall by talking straight to the audience.
Very interesting low self-esteem James moment b/w him and Mr. C. It's a shame that isn't explored more in the actual series. James is usually portrayed as vain, not insecure.
Mr. C, you're on a railway. Why are you hiking in the woods to get to a windmill?
Bertie saying "vroom vroom vroom" after every one of his lines is the best decision they ever made.
James: "Mr. C's not at the Windmill. I looked!" Point proven.
Even though they lean into the sick Henry angle, it's nice to see he still has that edge to his personality, at least for two out of three scenes.
Presented w/o context:
youtube
Why does Junior have a Scottish accent? Is he from Ringo's side of the family?
Mr. C is in charge of this entire railway rn and he's just sleeping outside on the fucking ground having an existential crisis.
Hey Lily can play the harmonica! I need to break out mine again and harass people w/ my inability to play.
There he is! P.T. Boomer! I remember reading SiF all the time going over all the scenes left in after they axed that entire plotline like that freeze-frame of Stacy w/ the picture of Burnett, Boomer, and Tasha.
Lady's ghost whistling still works as is, but just imagine hearing it thru out the film w/o that knowledge. Much more haunting.
They did Toby so much justice in this film. Consistently a wise voice of reason that gets his own spotlight moment vs Diesel.
I... I forgot this movie included a version of "Really Useful Engine" in the middle of it.
I know the film was criticized for how much focus it put on its all new human cast, but I actually really enjoy these scenes. Maybe bc they're part of the quintessential Magic Railroad experience.
That said, w/o the inclusion of Boomer, the human plot lacks tension or stakes for much of the runtime. The Sodor plot (thru the character of Mr. C) is doing all of the tension-building for the whole movie. As it stands, there's little reason for an audience to actually get invested in that part of the story as is outside of just liking the characters.
Man, this film's special effects have not aged well.
Oh yeah, Annie and Clarabel only get a single line in the entire movie. :/
Oh Alec finally gets to start acting serious towards the end of the film. It really helps the tension building.
Mr. C: "No he is not a dog. Let's just say he's a puppy in need of a good trainer," while Junior is kneeling in front of him w/ his tongue out panting. I get that it's meant to be a short little gag but wtf is this movie?
It's my favorite character! Tumbleweed!!!
OMG TUMBLEWEED APPEARS IN A SECOND SCENE! I FORGOT ABOUT THAT!
CGI Thomas just out here chilling on top of a cliff in the real world.
Thomas falls down and almost dies and Lily doesn't notice at all.
The smelter's yard continues to be the best set in this entire series. With the lighting turning the steam red it looks genuinely hellish.
Burnett: "Well Lady, this is your shining time too." Hey they said it!
The viaduct collapse scene is so good! It feels so real and weighty. Props to the props department.
Burnett: "Now we'll always remember our shining time together." 🌈🌈🌈
God, this movie is so cute! Really fun watching it again in full some all these years later.
HEY WHAT THE FUCJK IS THAT CREDITS SONG?!?
youtube
HELLO??!?
I've legitimately never heard this before. I must've just stopped watching at the credits as a kid. this movie just ends w/ a 2000s pop dance song. okay. sure.

Ao3′s Board Voting is Coming Up in August - Be AWARE
This is about Ao3 where most of us post our fics, and since fanfic dot net won't allow NC-17 or R rated fics, then a LOT of us rely on Ao3.
There will be board member elections starting on August 11th. If you can afford it, to become a voting member, you need to give a 10 dollar (US) donation here and OPT IN at that time as a voting member - https://elections.transformativeworks.org/voting/
This is important because a Missouri conservative Republican politician who in her day job as a politician has worked to enact book bans in Missouri and whose big platform is protecting children from social media online named AUDREY R. is running for the board. She cannot be allowed on. Whoever you choose to vote for as your 4 top picks, DO NOT VOTE FOR AUDREY R.
There is also a live Q&A with her on July 29th at 6 pm USA est time - https://elections.transformativeworks.org/2023-candidate.../
If you are on discord, feel free to go and ask Audrey R what "protecting children" means to her because it almost always means to limit kink and limit queer fic in general. When I know when the voting link is up for those of us who choose to join/becoming voting members of OTW (the parent board for AO3), then I will let you all know and give the link here as a reminder when elections/voting open in August.
Thank you so we can keep Ao3 full of kink and queerness and sex and blasphemy as the universe intended!
