I think the thing that bothers me the most about the gay ships argument and 'why can't you let friends be friends' is how if one of the two were female, they would have been a couple after 90 minutes of screen time. And this isn't just speculation.

As a Steve/Tony shipper I've seen dismissal over it and ok, it's more a wish ship, but then in the comics, when Tony was female, the two of them were married.

The in Star Trek, the obvious ship is Kirk / Spock. Then they had Kirks son and Spocks mentee / unofficial adoptive daughter sleep together. And they had FAR less chemistry than Kirk and Spock. I mean come on...

One unfortunate case of Accords, one trip to Siberia, one betrayal of a lifetime, and a whole lot of running off with his ancient, muscly pal and super-soldier boytoy (of all the frozen relics to thaw out it had to be him; of course it had to be him). And now Steve has the balls to stand there, all Steve and golden, as if he didn’t rip Tony’s trust right out from under him and jog off into the land of sunsets with his one geriatric true love, only to have the audacity to—

Last Great American Dynasty Pairing: Steve/Tony; Rating: T

Tony pushed open the door to the Rhode Island mansion he swore he’d never step foot in again. A ray of light swirled through the entryway windows matching the array of emotions swirling in the pit of his stomach. The last time he walked through this door, he’d been slamming it. Part of him thought that one, or both, of his parents would have to be six feet under for him to step foot in this mansion ever again. 

But that had been before Steve. 

Like a gorgeous, golden, hug of a wrecking ball, Steve entered his life and somehow managed to soften all his edges. Where before there were grudges and remorse, with Steve everything felt possible.

And then there was that day when Tony’s cell phone rang, the caller ID read his mother’s name, and Steve, sitting next to him, gently suggested picking it up. “You talk about her frequently, and very little of it is of the bad times. I’m just saying that if you want to…do what you want.”

With Steve, everything seemed easier.

So he picked up the phone, had the first conversation he’d had with either parents in over five years. And it was awkward, but not angry. And when he hung up a swell of emotions broke like a damn and Steve was there to hug him through it.

That was a year ago. And now, he stood in the entryway of this mansion, and in the distance he heard his mother’s heels tapping against marble tile, and he could already smell the lingering smoke of his father’s tobacco pipe. He was back in Rhode Island, and for the first time in a long time that didn’t cause his stomach to twist and nausea to bubble in his throat. 

Probably, because he was returning with his “home”, the man whose hand came to rest securely on his waist.

His mother’s charming voice broke through his thoughts. “Tony!” She pulled him into a hug, Chanel No.5 wafting through his nose and hitting him like a tonne of memories, causing the corners of his eyes to sting. She pulled back and turned to Steve, her smile only growing as she moved to hug him too. “Steve. It’s so good to meet you. I feel like we already know each other.”

“Talking once a week on the phone will do that, mom.”

Maria winked at Tony and looped arms with Steve, walking him further into the house, the tapestries and statues watching as one generation of the Rhode Island dynasty ushered in the next. Tony watched them walk, and swore he could hear the tiny pitter patter of feet rushing down the stairs. A phantom sound of possibility, of the next generation that this Rhode Island mansion may one day see, now that Steve was here.

The Avengers 2012 era was the best time ever in the fandom

Thor loves pop tarts, Clint lived in the vents, Bruce and Tony did science together, Steve was the mom friend of the team and did art in his free time, Natasha was cool aunt of the team, Loki was there too and a bunch of other characters like Peter, Sam, Bucky, Vision and Wanda all lived in the Avengers tower together

It was a much simpler time where everyone in the fandom was chill and having fun together

Hey there - thank you for the prompt and your kind comments on my fic! Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I'm still going through these, just taking a bit to juggle them with ongoing WIPs. I hope you enjoy!

Sometimes, Steve wondered if he kept his heart behind a shield—a metal barrier as familiar as the one that guarded him during battles. It was self-preservation, a way to avoid another disappointment, another lost love. 

On the battlefield, Steve called the shots, but off of it, Tony Stark had an uncanny knack for evading all of Steve’s best laid plans. Each toss of a wink or casual flirtation added another dent to his heart’s armor. 

There was an irony in the fact that a Stark had crafted his battle shield and now, decades later, another Stark did his damndest to penetrate his figurative shield. These were the thoughts that kept Steve up at night.

On top of everything, all Tony did to get past his defenses everyday was, well, existed. 

Sitting on the other side of the common room, Tony looked incredibly soft in a pair of linen pajama pants, a worn MIT hoodie and a pair of reading glasses perched on his nose. He had no idea that Steve kept sneaking glances at him over his paperback. Had no idea that every time Tony bit his lip or twirled a finger through a stray lock of hair, it was a direct shot, right past his shield and straight to his heart. 

Tony didn’t know, Tony couldn’t know. If Steve lowered his shield and let Tony in, Steve would want to keep Tony in his heart forever. Steve would want to possess every offered bit of love, horde it far beyond what Tony would expect or want. At least, what he assumed Tony would want--but to test that theory would be to lower his heart’s shield. 

But here Tony was, sitting across from him looking soft and, now, meeting Steve’s gaze over the paperback. Smiling that crooked little smile that fractured his shield, calling Steve’s name in a whispered voice that boomed against the metal, asking him out to dinner in a suggestion that made him rip the shield from his heart and agree to it, consequences be damned.

Sometimes, Steve wondered if he kept his heart behind a shield. Tony Stark always had a way of getting around his defenses. This shield was no different.
