EPISODE 1 : COLLIDE
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
The low hum of machinery filled your private lab, a familiar and soothing backdrop to the glow of various monitors and the holographic interface suspended above your desk. You were in your element here—surrounded by sleek gadgets, circuits, and blueprints only you understood. The soft, sterile light of the fluorescent bulbs bathed everything in a cool hue, making the outside world feel distant, almost irrelevant. Your hands moved with practiced precision, making the final tweaks to your latest invention—something sleek, cutting-edge, and powerful. It was not for public eyes, least of all Tony’s. Let him bask in the glory of his Iron Man suits and his public heroism. You preferred working in the shadows, away from the spotlight. After all, the real power came from the things people didn’t see.
Just as you were about to run another test, FRIDAY’s calm, computerized voice broke the silence. “Incoming call—Tony Stark.”
You let out a small, exasperated sigh, brushing a loose strand of hair behind your ear. Of course Tony would interrupt now, just when you were getting into the groove. Without breaking your stride, you gestured toward the nearest screen, signaling FRIDAY to patch the call through.
Tony’s face flickered to life on the screen, his usual cocky grin already plastered across his face. He looked annoyingly well-rested for someone who constantly threw himself into world-saving chaos.
“Hey, sis. Got a minute?” His tone was casual, but you could see the mischievous glint in his eyes. Tony always had an ulterior motive.
“Not for you,” you shot back, though your lips twitched with a slight smile. You’d perfected the art of giving Tony a hard time over the years. “What do you need, Tony?”
“Can’t a brother call to check on his favorite sibling?” He leaned back in his chair, looking entirely too pleased with himself.
You raised an eyebrow, feigning indifference. “We both know I’m your only sibling.”
“Touché,” he admitted, chuckling softly. "But seriously, I need you."
You froze momentarily, your hand hovering over the interface. Tony rarely outright asked for help, and when he did, you knew it was big. Slowly, you leaned back in your chair, crossing your arms over your chest as you gave him your full attention.
“I need my secret weapon,” Tony added, his voice dropping to that tone he used when he really wanted something.
You blinked at him, skeptical. “Secret weapon? Tony, I’m not about to be your backup tech support.”
Tony grinned, undeterred by your resistance. "This isn’t just tech support. It’s big. New team, new mission, bigger stakes. And who better to help me keep this bunch in line than you?"
You hesitated, glancing at the half-finished prototype on your desk. For years, you’d operated under the radar, happy to let Tony soak up the limelight. Being his sister came with a certain level of scrutiny you’d avoided like the plague. You preferred the quiet. The idea of stepping into the Avengers' world—especially now—seemed chaotic at best.
“I’m not suiting up, if that’s what you’re thinking,” you finally said, narrowing your eyes at him. The last thing you needed was to get dragged into one of his world-saving escapades in some shiny new armor.
“Of course not,” Tony grinned, though there was a playful glimmer in his eyes that told you he wasn’t ruling anything out entirely. “Just come to the Tower, meet the team. If you hate it, you can go back to hiding in your lab and pretending you’re not a genius like me.”
You rolled your eyes, though the thought lingered. A new team? A new mission? Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to check it out. If things went south, you could always disappear back into the shadows. But something in Tony’s tone hinted at urgency, something serious brewing on the horizon. He wasn’t just calling for fun. He needed you.
With a resigned sigh, you pushed off from the desk. “Fine. But this better not be some ploy to get me into an Iron suit.”
Tony’s smirk widened. “No promises.”
The call ended with a flicker of the screen, and you were left standing in the soft hum of your lab, the weight of Tony’s request hanging in the air. You glanced at your half-finished prototype one last time before grabbing your jacket, muttering under your breath, “What have I gotten myself into?”
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
Later, at Avengers Tower, you stepped into the grand lobby, the space sprawling before you like something out of a futuristic movie. Towering glass walls reflected the sunlight, creating a dazzling effect that made the entire room shimmer. High-tech displays blinked with data and notifications, while sleek metallic accents added to the modernity. It was a world apart from your cozy lab, and you couldn’t help but marvel at how Tony had truly outdone himself with this place. The grandeur was impressive, but you felt a knot tightening in your stomach, a sense of unease settling in as you stepped further inside.
Just as you took another step, a voice sliced through the air behind you, cool and assessing. “So you’re the sister Tony doesn’t like to talk about.”
You turned to face him, your heart pounding slightly at the sight of Steve Rogers, Captain America himself. He stood there, arms crossed over his chest, his muscular frame radiating authority. His expression was carefully neutral, but there was an edge to it—a mix of skepticism and something akin to wariness. He looked you up and down, his gaze critical, and you could already sense the judgment simmering beneath the surface. He thought you were just another Stark, another piece in Tony’s ego-driven game.
“And you’re the soldier out of time,” you replied, matching his coolness with your own. The words felt sharper than you intended, a defensive instinct kicking in. “Nice to meet you.”
Steve offered a tight nod, his lips pressed into a thin line, but he didn’t smile. “Tony’s told me a lot about you.”
“All bad, I hope,” you shot back, a hint of a smirk dancing on your lips. But Steve’s expression remained unyielding, the weight of his gaze unwavering.
“I’m not here to judge,” he stated, but his eyes bore into you, steady and measuring, as if he were trying to peel back layers of your identity with sheer will alone. “Just here to see if you’re serious.”
“Serious?” You scoffed, your heart racing with indignation. “About what?”
“About helping, about doing what’s right. We’ve got enough egos on this team.”
Your smirk faded, replaced by a flash of frustration. “You don’t even know me.”
“I know your brother.”
“Yeah, well, I’m not Tony,” you retorted, your voice sharper than you intended. The tension between you crackled in the air, palpable and thick. You hated the feeling of being judged before someone even bothered to know you, and clearly, Steve didn’t like the idea of another Stark stepping into the fold.
For a moment, silence engulfed you, and you could almost hear your heartbeat thundering in your ears. The intensity of Steve’s gaze felt like a spotlight, and you wondered if he could see through your facade, exposing the vulnerabilities you kept hidden. You could sense his protective instincts flaring, the weight of responsibility resting on his shoulders, and somehow, you felt like an outsider even though you were family.
Just as the tension threatened to spiral further, Tony strolled into the room, an air of nonchalance enveloping him. “Hey, you two! Getting along already?” His grin was impossibly wide, brightening the atmosphere even as it made the air around you feel heavier with unresolved tension.
You shot Tony a glare that could’ve cut through steel. This was not the time for his usual bravado. Steve merely shook his head, the corners of his mouth twitching in an attempt to contain a smile. “We’ll see,” he replied, his tone light but his eyes still fixed on you, as if he were weighing the likelihood of your success in this new venture. Then, with a final, assessing glance, he turned and walked off, leaving you standing there, frustration simmering just below the surface.
“Great. This is off to a fantastic start,” you muttered under your breath, a mixture of annoyance and apprehension churning inside you. The day had barely begun, and already you could feel the weight of expectation bearing down on you. As the lobby buzzed with the energy of heroes and high-tech innovation, you couldn’t shake the feeling that you were walking a tightrope, teetering between proving yourself and succumbing to the shadows that felt all too familiar.
With a deep breath, you steeled yourself, reminding yourself that you were here to help. No matter what Steve Rogers thought, you had your own strengths, your own path to carve in this world. You just had to figure out how to make them see that.
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
The air in the war room was thick with tension as Tony briefed you on the mission, his voice crisp and urgent. “So here’s the deal: leftover Chitauri tech has been activated by HYDRA operatives in the city. It’s supposed to be a routine clean-up mission, but we know better than to underestimate anything HYDRA gets their hands on.” His brow furrowed, the usual playful glint in his eyes replaced by a seriousness that made your stomach knot.
You listened intently, nodding as he laid out the plan. But as he insisted you tag along—even if just to observe and assess—you felt a mix of excitement and dread. You weren’t officially part of the team, yet here you were, being dragged into the chaos by your brother’s unwavering belief in your abilities.
When you arrived at the scene, the streets were already in chaos. The sounds of sirens blared, drowning out the shouts of frantic civilians being evacuated. Smoke billowed into the air, curling around toppled cars and shattered glass. You felt a chill run down your spine as you surveyed the destruction.
Amid the chaos, Steve barked orders at the rest of the team, his authoritative voice cutting through the noise like a beacon of hope. You hung back, monitoring the situation from a mobile unit that Tony had rigged up for you—a lifeline of information in a storm of uncertainty.
“Stay behind the lines!” Steve called out to you over his shoulder, his tone firm as he and Natasha led the charge into the fray.
You rolled your eyes, a mixture of annoyance and determination bubbling inside you. "I know what I’m doing, Captain," you shot back, trying to sound more confident than you felt. The last thing you wanted was to be coddled like a helpless child.
Just as the fight erupted, the atmosphere shifted. A crackling energy surged through the air, and before you could process the threat, one of the HYDRA operatives unleashed a pulse from the Chitauri device. The wave of electricity shot toward you, a blinding flash of danger that sent adrenaline coursing through your veins.
In that split second, everything shifted. Time seemed to slow as you braced for impact, your instincts screaming at you to move, to do something—anything. But before you could react, Steve surged forward like a force of nature. He slammed his shield into the ground with a resounding thud, creating a barrier that absorbed the surge of energy before it could reach you.
You stumbled back, wide-eyed, the reality of what had just happened crashing over you like a tidal wave. Steve turned to you, his expression a mixture of concern and frustration. “I said stay behind,” he said, his voice clipped, but there was a hint of protectiveness that made your heart race.
“I had it under control,” you snapped back, though deep down, you knew that wasn’t entirely true. You felt a surge of embarrassment rising within you, the remnants of the adrenaline making you defensive.
Steve didn’t argue further, but his gaze lingered on you, his eyes searching yours as if he were trying to gauge the depths of your resolve. The moment stretched out, thick with unspoken tension, and you could sense a silent acknowledgment between you—this was new territory for both of you, a fragile thread connecting your destinies.
But as quickly as it had come, the moment shattered. With a final look that communicated both concern and determination, Steve charged back into the fray, his shield raised high as he fought against the chaos. You stood there, heart racing, grappling with a whirlwind of emotions—frustration, admiration, and a flicker of fear for what lay ahead.
With a deep breath, you refocused on the task at hand. You weren’t going to let this moment define you. You had to prove to yourself, and to Steve, that you belonged here—among heroes and legends. The fight was just beginning, and you were ready to carve your place in it.
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
The mission concluded in a flurry of activity and relief, but the tension between you and Steve lingered in the air like an unresolved chord. Back at the Tower, you settled in front of the computer, the glow of the screen casting an almost ethereal light across your face as you replayed footage of the battle. Each frame brought back the chaos—the electricity crackling, the screams of civilians, and Steve’s shield slamming into the ground just in time to save you. The rush of adrenaline from earlier mixed with a more unsettling feeling as you examined the moment you almost lost everything.
As you scrolled through the footage, you felt a presence behind you. You didn’t need to turn around to know it was Steve; the weight of his gaze felt palpable, a steady warmth that contrasted sharply with the intensity of the battle you had just fought. He stood in the doorway, arms crossed, his silhouette framed by the soft light of the hallway, watching you with a quiet intensity.
“You handled yourself well out there,” he finally said, his voice low and sincere, cutting through the silence that surrounded you.
Surprised, you glanced up at him, momentarily meeting his gaze. “Thanks,” you replied, your voice a mix of pride and humility.
“But next time,” he continued, the firmness returning to his tone, “don’t make me have to save you.”
A small, teasing smile tugged at your lips, a spark of your trademark confidence flaring up in response. “Don’t worry, Captain. I won’t,” you shot back, your tone light, though beneath it was a current of seriousness.
Steve didn’t respond immediately, his expression shifting as he studied you. In his blue eyes, you caught a flicker of something deeper—perhaps a grudging respect, maybe even a hint of admiration. It made your heart flutter unexpectedly, a rush of warmth that was both thrilling and confusing. The Captain of America saw you, and for a moment, the weight of expectations from being Tony Stark's sister lifted, replaced by a connection that felt genuine.
He nodded once, a subtle acknowledgment of the moment shared between you, before turning to leave. As he walked away, you couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t just another fleeting exchange. You were carving out your own space in this team, proving that you were more than just Tony’s sister—you were a force to be reckoned with in your own right.
Left alone in the dim light of the lab, you turned back to the screen, but your thoughts were no longer on the footage. Instead, your mind lingered on Steve’s quiet strength, his unwavering resolve. You were beginning to understand that there was more to him than just the Captain—the man behind the shield had his own battles, his own vulnerabilities.
And you felt an undeniable pull towards him, a sense of camaraderie that was slowly transforming into something deeper. The mission had ended, but the journey was just beginning, and you were more determined than ever to prove yourself—not just to Steve, but to the entire team.
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
The mission had been a success, but the moment Steve saw you—Tony’s sister—standing there, he felt the weight of responsibility tugging at his heart. He knew you had potential; he’d seen you handle yourself with surprising skill, but he wasn’t prepared for how much the little spark in your eyes got under his skin.
Leaning against the doorway, he watched you replay the footage of the battle. You were focused, your brow furrowed in concentration, and it captivated him. You radiated a unique blend of confidence and determination, much like your brother, yet with a warmth that was distinctly your own.
When he finally spoke, telling you that you handled yourself well out there, he truly meant it. But as soon as the words left his mouth, he felt a mix of admiration and wariness wash over him. You were Tony’s sister—his little sister. He recalled the stories Tony had told him about your childhood, the sibling rivalry, and how fiercely protective Tony had always been of you. That instinct felt like a wall between them, even as he felt drawn to you.
“Don’t make me have to save you,” he warned, hoping to impress upon you the importance of caution. He had seen too many people underestimate their enemies, and he didn’t want you to be another victim of that recklessness.
Your response—light and teasing—pulled a small smile from him, but it was quickly overshadowed by concern. “Don’t worry, Captain. I won’t.” It was infuriating how effortlessly you seemed to deflect his concern. You had a spark that reminded him of Tony, but there was something more disarming about you. Something that made it hard for him to maintain his composure.
He nodded, more to himself than to you, before he turned to leave. He didn’t want to admit how much your presence affected him, how he found you attractive in a way that made him question everything he knew about focusing on the mission. But he also understood that getting involved with Tony’s sister could complicate things—complicate his already tangled life.
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
As the days turned into weeks, you became a more permanent fixture in the Tower, and Steve couldn’t help but notice how effortlessly you blended into their chaotic team dynamic. Watching you interact with the others was eye-opening. You had Tony’s quick wit, but there was a warmth in your approach that brought out the best in everyone.
He remembered a moment during a team meeting when Clint made a joke at your expense. Without missing a beat, you shot back, “If you’re going to insult me, at least make it clever.” The room erupted in laughter, and Steve found himself chuckling along, secretly impressed by your tenacity.
But the more time he spent with you, the more he struggled with his feelings. You were intelligent, fiercely capable, and incredibly brave—qualities he admired. Yet every time he looked at you, he felt the ghost of Tony’s protective nature hovering over them. He could practically hear Tony warning him to keep his distance, reminding him that you were off-limits. It was a mental tug-of-war, and every glance between them only heightened his awareness of how close they were getting.
One evening, you both worked late in the lab. He caught you watching him as he threw punches at a training dummy, a curious smile dancing on your lips. It was a moment of connection, but it also made his heart race in a way that both thrilled and terrified him. He knew you were trouble, yet there was something about you that drew him in, like a moth to a flame.

Helpless ~ Steve's Version
MAIN MASTERLIST / MARVEL MASTERLIST / MUSICAL INSPIRED FIC MASTERLIST
Steve Rogers x Female!Stark!Reader
Word Count: 2,250ish
Request: song request: helpless (hamilton) for steve where f!reader is pining for him (and ofc he pines back) and the 'sister' in the song is just best friend!tony 😼😼 (but none of the angelica/hamilton parallels! just tony noticing reader's crush and introducing them) love your work!
Notes: I changed the request a bit, but I hope everyone enjoys it!
“Ooh (hey, hey)
I do, I do, I do, I do (hey, hey, hey, hey)
Hey (hey, hey)
Ooh (hey, hey)
I do, I do, I do, I do (hey, hey, hey, hey, hey)”
The Stark Tower was now The Avengers Tower and tonight Tony was hosting the grand opening gala. He was currently following you around your small New York apartment, begging you to attend.
“Come on, sis,” Tony begged. “For me. You haven’t stepped foot in the Tower once and I want to get your thoughts.”
“Tony,” you sighed with a shake of your head. “I thought we agreed that I’m not meant for the spot light, that’s you.”
“This isn’t the spot light. I have a dress for you. Pepper’s going to be there. You don’t have to hit the red carpet or anything.”
“I don’t know, Tony—“
“Please, Y/N.” He reached over and grabbed your hands. “I almost died, remember?”
You rolled your eyes. “Really? You’re playing that card?”
“Come on! I just want my baby sis to have fun with me for once. Please.”
You new that when your brother was looking at you with this big brown eyes, it was hard for you not to cave. “Fine.”
“Yes!” He pulled you into a hug and kissed your cheek. “Let’s go! I can give you a tour and then you and Pepper can get ready together.”
~~~
You were Tony Stark’s half-sister, having been conceived by Howard Stark having an affair with one of this secretaries. Tony was twelve when you were born and immediately was attached to you. The Starks had kept you a secret to the world and Tony continued to do so at your request. Though you could tell that it was beginning to hurt him more and more. He loved you so much and was so proud of you, and he just wanted to share that with the world.
“The Tower is amazing, Tony,” you told him as the two of you waited in the elevator.
“I’m glad you think so,” he smiled as the elevator stopped and opened up, “because this is your floor.”
“Wh—What?”
Tony grabbed your hand and pulled you out of the elevator. “This is all for you. It has an office for your work, three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a kitchen, a dinning room, and a living room. JARVIS has it set up so that only people you approve can access your floor.”
“Tony… I…”
“Y/N, I almost died. You could have died. I can’t protect my baby sis if you’re out there on your own. Please, do this, for me? No one has to know about the floor or you. I promise. But this way, I know that you’re safe and we can even spend more time together and—“
“Yes, Tony. I’ll move in.”
“Yay!” He kissed your forehead. “Also, the movers are already on their way with you things.”
“Tony!”
He moved away from your playful swat. “Hey! You know that I just love you, right kid?”
“I know. I love you, too. I’ll always be grateful for what you do for me, Tones.”
“Okay!” He clapped, rubbing his hands together. “Your dress for the gala is in your closet and Pepper and I will swing by to pick you up at 7.”
“Boy, you got me helpless
Look into your eyes, and the sky's the limit
I'm helpless
Down for the count, and I'm drownin' in ‘em”
“I have never been the type to try and grab the spotlight
We were at a revel with some rebels on a hot night
Laughin' at my sister as she's dazzling the room
Then you walked in, and my heart went “boom””
The Tower ballroom as full of celebrities and government officials. There were groups dancing to the music and groups chatting while drinking and eating the hors d’oeuvres. You had never felt more out of place. You were hiding against the wall with a drink in your hand, watching Tony charm everyone who wished to talk to him.
The soft ding of the elevator caught your attention. You lost your breath as a tall, blonde man where black slacks and a navy button down dress shirt stepped out. He looked just as out of place as you felt. His eyes somehow found your gaze and for a moment, no one else was in the ballroom but the two of you. But before either of you could make a move towards each other, the man was pulled in the direction of a group of government officials.
“Tryin' to catch your eye from the side of the ballroom
Everybody's dancin' and the band's top volume
Grind to the rhythm as we wine and dine
Grab a sister and whisper, "Yo, this one's mine" (ooh)”
You walked along the side of the ballroom, tracking the man. He kept being pulled into different conversations like he was important. He did seem familiar, but you couldn’t quite put your finger on it. Tony eventually made his way over to you, needing to check on you.
“You holding up, sis?” He asked softly as he handed you a new drink.
“Yeah, fine,” you mumbled, still focused on the man. “Uh, who is that?” You slightly pointed.
Tony’s brows furrowed as he looked over to where you were pointing. “Oh, that’s Capsicle. You know? Captain America?”
“That’s Steve Rogers?”
“The one and only. And annoyingly righteous as I always thought he would be.”
You shrugged. “He’s… cute.”
Tony’s eyes widened as his head snapped in your direction. He quickly studied your face. He had never seen that look on you before. In fact, you had never openly admitted to finding someone cute before. Most likely because you were too scared of what Tony might do. He looked back at Steve. There could definitely be worse people for you to find cute. He sighed and began to head towards Steve.
“Wait, Tony!” You quietly called. “What are you doing?”
“My sister made her way across the room to you (ooh)
And I got nervous, thinking, what's she gonna do? (Ooh)
She grabs you by the arm, I'm thinking I'm through (ooh)
Then you look back at me, and suddenly”
“I'm helpless
Oh, look at those eyes, oh (look into your eyes, and the sky's the limit)
I'm helpless, I know
Down for the count, and I'm drowning in 'em
(Helpless) I am so into you
(Look into your eyes and the sky's the limit) I am so into you
I'm helpless (I know)
I'm down for the count, and I'm drownin' in ‘em”
You watched anxiously as Tony made his way across the ballroom to Steve. Tony greeted him with a hand to his upper arm and the two began chatting. Your heart was hammering in your chest as you watched. Suddenly, both of them were looking at you and you met Steve’s eyes once again. They were the most beautiful shade of blue, you could have drowned in them. Right then and there you knew that you were screwed.
“Where are you taking me?
I'm about to change your life
Then by all means, lead the way”
“Elizabeth Schuyler, it's a pleasure to meet you
Schuyler? (My sister)
Thank you for all your service
If it takes fighting a war for us to meet, it will have been worth it
I'll leave you to it”
“Where you are leading me to?” Steve questioned as he followed Tony across the ballroom.
“To the most beautiful girl across the ballroom,” Tony commented. “And trust me, I don’t introduce anyone to her.” They stopped in front of you and you were trying not to freakout. “Steve Rogers, meet Y/N Stark.”
“Stark?” Steve was genuinely surprised.
“My sister.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Steve,” you said, shyly, offering your hand.
He took it, shaking it gently. “Nice to meet you, too,” he replied.
“I’m going to leave you two to it,” Tony smirked. “But don’t do anything stupid. That’s my baby sister you’re dealing with.” Then he slipped off to rejoin Pepper.
“I’m sorry about him,” you apologized for your brother. “He’s really protective.”
“I didn’t even know he had a sister,” Steve said. “It’s not in any of the files.”
“Yeah, it’s a family secret. Fury won’t allow it to leak because Tony and I asked him to.”
Steve nodded and then nervously looked around. “Uh… I don’t… well… I can’t dance, but do you want to?”
You giggled. “You can’t dance and you just asked me?”
“Yeah, only if you want to—“
“I’d love to.”
“One week later, I'm writin' a letter nightly
Now my life gets better every letter that you write me
Laughin' at my sister 'cause she wants to form a harem
I'm just sayin', if you really loved me, you would share him (ha)”
You and Steve quickly became inseparable. You would meet for coffee in the Tower and go on walks around the block. The two of you talked about your lives: his before the ice and how he was handling the new century and yours being the bastard Stark.
Feelings were growing quickly between the two of you but neither of you were confident enough to act on them.
“Two weeks later, in the living room stressin'
My father's stone-faced while you ask him for his blessin'
I'm dying inside as you wine and dine
And I'm tryin' not to cry, 'cause there's nothing that your mind can't do (ooh)”
“My father makes his way across the room to you (ooh)
I panic for a second, thinking we're through (ooh)
But then he shakes your hand and says, "Be true" (ooh)
And you turn back to me smiling”
Steve was nervous, more nervous than he had ever been. He had seen the way Tony protected you in just the little time he had known about you. So Steve felt like he needed to check with Tony before he asked you out. He found Tony in the lab.
“Hey, Tony, can we talk?” Steve hoped that his voice didn’t give off the nerves he was feeling.
“Sure,” Tony mumbled, focused on his suit. “What’s up, Cap?”
“I… Well, I was wondering if it would be okay if I asked Y/N out on a date?” Tony dropped everything he was working on and slowly turned to face Steve. “I— I know that we haven’t know each other very long but I have really enjoyed getting to know her more and I—“
“Stop right there, Rogers.” Tony moved his jaw around as he put his thoughts together. “I need to be honest with you. Y/N doesn’t go on dates. Some of it’s my fault. I’m always worried about her safety and people finding out the truth of who she is.”
“I would never do anything to hurt her, Tony.”
Tony scoffed. “That's what they all say. But… I know that you mean well, Rogers. And I know that I monitor everything that happens in the Tower so I will know if you do, do anything. And I mean, anything! Got that?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Just… treat her good, Steve. She deserves everything.”
“I will.”
“I'm helpless
(Look into your eyes, and the sky's the limit)
I'm helpless (helpless)
Down for the count, and I'm drownin' in 'em (whoo!)
Helpless (that boy is mine, that boy is mine, ooh)
Look into your eyes, and the sky's the limit
I'm helpless (helpless) (whoo)
Down for the count (yeah), and I'm drownin' in ‘em”
“Eliza, I don't have a dollar to my name
An acre of land, a troop to command, a dollop of fame
All I have is my honor, a tolerance for pain
A couple of college credits and my top-notch brain”
“Insane, your family brings out a different side of me
Peggy confides in me, Angelica tried to take a bite of me
No stress, my love for you was never in doubt
We'll get a little place in Harlem and we'll figure it out”
“I've been livin' without a family since I was a child
My father left, my mother died, I grew up buck wild
But, I'll never forget my mother's face, that was real
As long as I'm alive, Eliza, swear to god you'll never feel so”
You could tell that Steve was nervous about something as the two of you headed back to your floor after meeting for coffee. When the two of you reached the elevator, Steve paused.
“Uh, Y/N, I, um… I have a question to ask you,” Steve stammered.
“Yeah, Steve?” You asked.
“Would you… Would you like to go on a date with me?”
You smiled as you inhaled sharply. “Yes, Steve, I would love to go on a date with you.”
“Really?” Steve grinned, so giddy that you said yes. “You want to?”
“I do…. I really do.”
“I do, I do, I do
Eliza (helpless) (I do, I do, I do)
I never felt so (helpless)
Yeah, yeah
Down for the count, and I'm drownin' in 'em (down for a count, and I’m-)”
“Helpless (yo, my life is gon' be fine 'cause Eliza's in it)
Helpless (I look into your eyes, and the sky's the limit, I'm)
Helpless
(Down for the count, and I'm drownin' in ‘em)”
“In New York, you can be a new man
In New York, you can be a new man
In New York, you can be a new man (helpless)”
When Y/n and Steve walk in, most of the guests have dwindled away. Leaving only the Avengers in the room.
Bruce is sitting on the couch, leaning over to talk to Natash on the armchair to his left. On Bruce’s other side sits Sam, on the backrest of the couch and below him is Clint, on the floor, fiddling with drum sticks—which she has absolutely no clue about the origins of. Maria’s right there next to him, on the floor, heels abandoned to the side. Tony’s standing by the bar, pouring a couple drinks, she’s presuming for himself and her. Rhodey’s taken the seat on Maria’s right, meanwhile Thor’s half lying on the couch opposite Clint and Maria.
However, the best addition to all this is Helen Cho, sleeping peacefully in one corner of the room, while the rest of them chat away.
“Hey, hotshot!” Sam yells the moment he spots her. “Who’s your favorite Avenger?”
“I heard you put your money on Tony,” she throws back very easily as she walks over to meet Tony at the bar. Steve, on the other hand, seats himself between Rhodey and Thor. “Worried you’ll lose?”
Before Sam can respond, however, Natasha speaks up, “Oh, he’s definitely losing.”
Y/n and Tony share a smile as he offers her the drink, then together, they head back to the centre of the room and join these crazy kids at the table.
“Why, Romanoff, you seem mighty confident for a girl who calls me a puzzle she can’t solve,” Y/n remarks, taking a seat on the armchair next to Thor while Tony sits down next to Rhodey. “Who’d you pick?” She knows the answer, she just wants to hear it. Stirring shit up is afterall, a Stark’s favorite family bonding activity.
Natasha makes a face like it should be fucking obvious. “Steve,” she says.
“Ah,” Y/n nods. “You think those baby blues work on me in the bedroom, so they must work on the field too?”
“No,” she counters with a smile. “I’ve seen the look in your eyes when you talk about him, not just Steve Rogers, the boyfriend but Steve Rogers, The Captain America. You admire him.” She adjusts herself to look right at Y/n as she adds, “You might be a puzzle I can’t solve, but I know this much, the baby blues work wonders on you. He’s it for you.”
The statement made is utterly true, and it makes Y/n want to look over at Steve for his reaction. But she’s frankly very afraid of what that might be, so chooses not to. Instead she barely sets her glass down to respond before Clint points a drumstick at her like it’s a gavel of absolute judgment.
“Baby blues can take a damn hike. It’s definitely Tony,” he declares, spinning the stick between his fingers. “It’s the law. Blood over boyfriends.”
“First of all,” Rhodey cuts in, with a cunning smirk, “we don’t even know if she picked anyone.”
“Please,” Sam scoffs. “That smile? That’s the smile of someone who’s already made a choice and is just waiting for us to catch up.”
She does smile. Because he’s right.
“Exactly,” Thor agrees, raising his drink like he’s toasting her superior intellect. “And the answer is clear! The bond of siblings is forged in the stars. Little Stark would never betray her brother.”
“Okay, first of all—” Tony interjects, pointing dramatically, “thank you, Point Break. Second, she would betray me, but only if it were funny.”
She raises her glass to him in silent agreement.
“That’s adorable,” Bruce says dryly, “but the answer is Steve.”
Hill hums. “Yeah, no. I’m gonna have to side with the Norse God on this one.”
“Exactly!” Clint inflates, seeing the tides turn his way again. “You can’t just disregard decades of Stark sibling history for some—” he gestures vaguely at Steve, “—muscles and morality situation.”
Steve, who’s been quietly sipping his drink, raises a brow. “Some muscles and morality situation?”
“I mean… accurate,” Y/n muses.
It makes Steve turn to her and pass a look.
‘Really?’ he asks her wordlessly. ‘Really.’ she replies with a smile.
The exchange goes unnoticed by the rest, who are still dead set on their debate.
“See?” Natasha smirks. “It’s Steve.”
Sam shakes his head. “No, no, no. Y’all are forgetting the key factor—who puts up with Y/n’s bullshit more?”
“Tony,” Clint says immediately.
“Steve,” Natasha counters, just as fast.
Bruce lifts a hand. “Steve literally chose this. Tony was born into it.”
“Oh, so it’s voluntary suffering that makes someone her favorite?” Maria deadpans. “That’s the logic we’re going with?”
“You’re acting like loving Y/n is some great hardship,” Tony says, putting a hand to his chest like a martyr. “It’s not, okay? It’s a privilege. A spectacular pain in the ass, but a privilege.”
Steve snorts into his drink. She just winks at him.
Bruce sits up then, “If we’re going purely by scientific method—”
“No one asked for science, Doc,” Sam cuts in.
Bruce is undeterred. “—she gravitates toward Cap in high-stress situations. It’s a subconscious preference.”
She tilts her head, intrigued. “That a fact, Doc?”
“It’s an observable pattern,” Bruce nods.
Tony scoffs. “Or, and hear me out, it’s just that Steve’s built like a brick wall and happens to be standing in the way most of the time.”
Steve sighs, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “I’m right here.”
Rhodey, having had enough, finally leans forward, aiming to end the debate. “You’re all wrong, by the way.”
That gets the room’s attention.
“Oh, this should be good,” Tony says. “Go on, War Machine. Who do you think it is?”
Rhodey smirks. “Neither of you two, that’s for sure,” he states with finality.
“How’d you figure that?” Steve asks, curious.
“‘Cause whenever you tell her to pick favorites, she answers with the most out of pocket shit—for instance, you ask her what her favorite Star Wars is, and you’d think she’ll say Empire or Return of the Jedi, right?” Everyone nods. Rhodey just shakes his head and looks at her, encouraging her to answer.
“A New Hope,” she obliges.
Groans sound out across the room, with complaints to boot.
But Rhodey smiles triumphant. “See?” He takes a sip of his drink, “It’s neither of you, trust me.”
“This proves nothing,” Clint counters. “Other than the fact that she has questionable taste—which seems to be the pattern,” he says looking at Steve.
Steve sighs, put upon. “You didn’t even know we were dating until an hour ago.”
“Which is absolutely wild to me,” Y/n chimes in. “You thought the kiss I gave him after the mission was purely platonic? Or did you think I kiss all the Avengers like that?”
“I knew you guys had a thing! I just missed the part where you made it official,” Clint defends.
“We’re getting sidetracked,” Sam butts in.
“Despite being hopelessly blind, Barton’s logic is sound,” Thor says then. “Choice made in Midgardian movies holds no bearing whatsoever on her choice of favorite Avenger.”
“You know what? We could go back and forth on this till the cows come home,” Tony states. “Let’s get right to the source instead.” He turns to her with a smirk and anticipation clear in his eyes. “Ready for it, Stark? Question of the hour…” the anticipation builds. “Who is your favorite Avenger?”
She lets the question hang in the air for a second, taking the time to leisurely sip her drink.
But then she looks up at him between her lashes and says, “Sorry, handsome.”
Steve, as expected, is gracious in his defeat. His head falls, as if he’d seen this coming a mile away, but he doesn’t quit smiling. She apologises to him silently with her eyes, and he forgives her all the same.
Tony, however, is anything but gracious in his presumed victory.
“Before you start celebrating—it’s not you either, dickhead,” she speaks up, putting a damper on Tony’s celebration howl.
He turns to face her instantly, “Then who the fuck is it?”
“Isn’t it obvious?” Y/n asks, only to be met with silence. So, she answers her own question, “It’s Widow.”
“Out of pocket shit,” Rhodey reiterates, with a winning grin.
“Bullshit!” Tony slumps. “That’s a diplomatic answer you just made up, to avoid picking between the two of us,” he says, pointing from himself to Steve.
Y/n makes a face, “You wish.” Her tone is standoffish enough to get Tony off her back immediately. She takes another sip of her drink, having accomplished that goal. “She’s the only woman on the team and she’s one who keeps all you miscreants in check… which while not an easy feat, is not why she’s my favorite Avenger.”
“Alright,” Sam chimes in. “I’ll bite,” he announces, as if he’s volunteering to be the sacrificial lamb. “Why is she your favorite Avenger?”
She smiles. “You boys…” she begins. “You had greatness thrust upon you…” she looks around the room, just for good measure. “She stole it.” She takes another swig—takes her time with it too. “Please understand,” she begins, meaning every word, “I’m not trying to negate the fact that you guys had to go through some real fucking horrible shit to get to where you are today. I’m not just proud, but grateful to be associated with each and every single person in this room.” She needs to make sure that they mean it, so she pauses to let them soak in the words. And then adds, “But she’s different.”
She clicks her tongue, “I mean, she’s done her fair share of bad things. I’ve read her files and man, it’s really not good—some of it is bordering on grotesque. Frankly, I am surprised they didn’t redact more shit then they already had—”
She’s cut off by the voice of someone clearing their throat.
Her eyes fly to meet the offending party only to come up with a smile.
Natasha’s looking at her intently, face completely and utterly unreadable.
“But,” Y/n says then. “But…” She licks her lips, and straightens, and addresses Natasha directly when she begins anew, “To be able to face your past… to look back at your history, so marred and maimed by your misdeeds… and then to say ‘To hell with it. I am going to be good, now’, that—that takes the kind of courage that only someone with balls of steel could accomplish.” Her smile slips out, she can’t help it.
When she looks around, the rest of the team is smiling too.
She composes herself. “The way I see it… being good—is not inherent…” Her eyes meet Steve’s as she adds with a smirk, “Unless you’re Steve fucking Rogers…” Steve smiles back at her. “It’s a choice you make,” she states, tone far more grim, a stark contrast to the one she’s used thus far. “Every single day, with every single decision.” She swallows thickly with the weight of her words. After a beat, she scoffs—a little self-deprecatingly, “So, I’m not gonna sit here and say being good is easy—it really fucking isn’t, especially when it counts.” She knows that just as well, if not better than most of the people in this room. “But it is easier when you’ve been taught the difference between right and wrong,” she tells all of them. “She wasn’t. She chose to learn it, all by her lonesome… and then she stuck to it… And that is why, she is my favorite Avenger.”
There is a stunned yet warm silence in the room.
She can tell that everyone’s taking in her words, running it in their heads again, just to grasp it better. So, she lets it hang.
Tony, obviously, is the one who breaks it, “My God, that was a great answer. I—I mean, fuck! That was eloquent and emotional and very well thought out, and now I just feel like an asshole.”
“Don’t have to feel like an asshole, Stark,” she says leaning back into her chair. “You already are one.”
Tony just rolls her eyes at that. “Eat a dick, Halle Berry.”
She chuckles at that.
“I don’t mean this as an insult but,” Bruce pipes up, “I’ve never seen you like this before. I didn’t think you could…” He cuts himself off, clearly at a loss for the right word.
“Emote?” She supplies.
“Yes,” Bruce agrees immediately.
She snorts. “Yeah, well. I can…”
“Just takes a few drinks for her to get there,” Tony adds on with a cheeky smile as he comes to sit opposite to her on the couch next to Steve.
Clint’s instantly on alert. He pretends to cover his mouth and whisper-yells at Sam, “Get the woman a refill!” Sam, always happy to have a big emotional moment, obliges eagerly. It makes her roll her eyes with a smile. “Hey, Y/n?”
“Yes, Clint?”
“What do you think of me?”
The question shocks her a bit, she won’t lie. Clint and her interactions have been few and far between. She’s not holding that against the dude as such, seeing as the only time they ‘hang out’ is during a mission. It is a fucking fact. She can’t run away from it either.
“You really wanna know, Barton?”
“I’m asking, aren’t I?” Clint throws back at her while Sam offers him a fresh glass, a repeat of her drink.
With a wordless thanks bid to Sam she turns back to look at Clint.
And she can tell, he’s expecting something standoffish. A joke, maybe? But yeah, she can tell he thinks it’ll be a throwaway compliment at best and a complete dismantling of his worst habits at worst.
Well, isn’t it great then that she absolutely loves proving people wrong.
She sits up again, “No one asked you to do this.” The statement kicks the smug look off of his face instantly. Fucker, she thinks to herself, a little triumphantly. “You spent a long time in Black Ops, so taking up the S.H.I.E.L.D. gig would have been an easy choice, but no one ever asked you to go fight aliens.” She almost jumps in her seat, her words emphatic, “Especially, when their leader had mindfucked you seven ways to Sunday! No one would have held it against you if you decided to just take a day.” She clicks her tongue, “But you didn’t. You got back up and you fought fucking aliens.” She looks him straight in the eyes, “You’re just a man, Barton, and you fight with Gods… to most people that makes you a hero, but to me that makes you a terrifying role model.” Y/n can clearly see the moment that the words hit Clint with their full force. She thinks she can even see his chest cave with the weight of them. “You keep this team grounded. You keep ‘em human. You keep ‘em together.”
Silence.
For a second.
Then another.
And then, “Fuck!” Clint exclaims. “I mean… No, yeah. I mean, fuck. Cause, fuck!” Y/n laughs. “I thought you didn’t even like me.”
Her face falls instantly. “Why the fuck wouldn’t I like you?”
“I don’t know?” Clint defends, poorly. “You don’t talk to me.”
Her nose scrunches up. “No, you don’t talk to me.”
“I talk to you plenty!”
“You really don’t,” Natasha chimes in, looking at Clint over the top of her beer bottle.
“I don’t?” Clint looks around the room for an answer. And everyone replies promptly by either looking away awkwardly or a stern shake of their heads. “Fuck! I’m sorry. I just thought that you didn’t like me. But… That was—what you said…” Oh shit, the fucker’s about to get serious. His brow is scrunching up. “What you said means a lot to me. Thank you… And I’m sorry. I’m gonna—I’m gonna talk to you more now.”
She tries her best not to laugh as she replies, “Can’t wait.”
“Do Banner next,” Clint says, pointing to Bruce.
“No, no, no, no, no. Don’t drag me into this. This is Barton’s—” Bruce is cut off.
“Too late, Bruce.”
Bruce looks at her and then exhales. “No chance of me getting out of this?”
“None whatsoever,” she tells him solemnly.
“So I have to do this?”
“Unfortunately.”
He closes his eyes, shakes his head slightly and finally lets a small smile slip out. “Fine…” He stares her down, “Hit me.”
He’s expecting the worst.
So why not hit him with it?
“You are a monster.”
At that, Bruce physically deflates, he collapses in on himself. “This is exactly why I didn’t want to do this.”
He’s not gonna get off that easy.
“You went to try and recreate a serum that made Captain America and instead you got turned into a raging, big green guy who has no understanding of ‘tasteful nudity’. Fuck, man. My heart bleeds for your wardrobe alone…” She can hear quiet chuckles from around the room. But then she tilts her head, looking him over. Sensing the shift in her demeanor, Bruce meets her gaze. “Anyone else would have taken it as the hit that it was and gotten… angry.” Bruce smiles at the pun. “Gotten angry at the world, angry at life, angry at everything… And I mean, who the fuck would have blamed you? You had every right to be angry. Because how the fuck is fair to be dealt a hand as shit as that, when they are someone as kind as you?” She thinks her words over, fidgeting with the glass in her hand. “I won’t comment on your struggles with the Hulk, I wasn’t there so it’s not my place. From what little I do know, I can imagine it wasn’t an easy time for you. I can—I can sympathise with that… But you took the worst thing that could ever happen to anyone and moulded it as such that now you use it to help people, to protect them. To be a hero.”
“I’m not—”
She cuts him off again, “I know you don’t see that in yourself, but I do, okay? I look at you and I see a hero. So does everyone else in this room.” She gives Bruce a moment—to look around at his team, who look back at him with the same faith that she’s speaking of. He seems a little too fucking surprised to see it. “And I don’t just mean that as the Hulk. Because you’re not just the green guy.” She levels him with a stern look. “I’m also talking about Banner, the guy with seven fucking PhDs.”
Bruce blushes.
He stares at his hands as he replies, “Well, Y/n… I really do appreciate the fact that you didn’t forget my seven PhDs.”
She can’t help it, she laughs. So do the rest.
“I know you don’t believe me but—”
Now it’s Bruce who cuts her off. “It’s probably the kindest thing anyone’s ever said to me, Y/n. Thank you.”
“Don’t mention it.” She takes a large sip from her drink.
“I volunteer to be next,” Thor speaks up, glass in hand.
And who is she to say no to that? “As you wish, your highness.”
“Come on, Little Stark, let’s see what you’ve got.”
She smiles. “This isn’t your fucking planet, dude.” The big man is left confused. It makes her smile widen. “This isn’t your fucking planet, we are not your people, this is not your kingdom. You are neither obligated to fight for us, nor were you asked to… You could have just looked the other way. Ignored your brother’s annoying cry for attention and let this planet fend for itself, but you didn’t. Fuck, more than that, you kept coming—you keep coming back, helping in any way you can to help us fix things, even when it’s not your job to…”
Her eyes turn to his hammer, “That hammer of yours—you say it can only be picked up when you’re worthy, and sure, Odin’s seal of approval on you is great and all but—” her gaze fly up to meet his, “I don’t know him. So—and I mean no offense here—but him saying you’re worthy, means fuckall to me. All I know is that to me, you’re a God because you never turn away from someone asking for help. No matter where you are, no matter who it is—if they ask for a helping hand, they can always, always count on yours. That is what makes you worthy, and what will surely make you a great King.”
Thor sniffles.
He fucking sniffles.
Her eyes widen in surprise, so much so that she forgets to quip.
“A great King, you say? Well, if that ever happens, remind me to put you in charge of all my public speeches,” he says, eyes a little misty.
“Sure, yeah,” she answers, unsure of herself. “Whatever you want, big guy.” She never thought she was going to make the God of Thunder cry.
“You made the God of Thunder cry!” Sam states, a little astonished.
“I am not crying!”
She ignores Thor completely, “And it’s your turn next, Birdman.”
“What? No! I’m not even an Avenger!” He comes to his seat atop the backrest next to Bruce.
Bullshit.
“How the fuck does that matter when you’re the one I look up the most?”
Sam clearly wasn’t expecting her to say that. “Me?”
“Yeah, you!” Obviously. She plays with her drink a little, before taking a sip. “You have this infectious optimism about you—that a realist like me—”
“A pessimist like you,” Tony corrects her.
She flips him off, but agrees. “That a pessimist like me should technically hate… But I don’t. I kinda like it, a lot. It’s so fucking contagious that I think might just want to steal it.”
Sam smiles at her then, “I could just teach you, hotshot.”
Sipping her drink, she shakes her head. “If you’re going to teach me anything, teach me about loyalty, cause man! We came knocking on your window, with the entire might of the United States of America’s premiere Intelligence Organisation up our ass,” she points from herself to Steve to Natasha. “And you fucking let us in!” She sits up, folding up one leg under the other. “You didn’t just give us a place to lay low—no! You chose to join the fucking fight! Your first time around as an Avenger and you took down the plan Hydra had been crafting for fifty fucking years!” Sam laughs, partly at her enthusiasm, partly because she can tell he gets what she’s getting at. “That’s some top tier Avenger shit if I’ve ever seen any. Goddamn it, Birdman! Mark my words,” she holds up her glass to him. “You’re gonna take the world by storm… and when you do, I’m gonna go around gloating to anyone who’ll listen that Sam Wilson’s first mission as an Avenger was with me.” She winks at him and takes a swig. “You’ll see.”
Sam chuckles, with his head down and a hint of shyness blooming across his face. “I’ll hand it to ya, hotshot—you’ve got a way with words.” He looks over at the rest of the room, “And y’all had me believe she can’t express herself for shit!”
“That’s cause none of them have ever gotten drunk with her,” Rhodey chimes in.
“But you have, haven’t you, Rhodey?” She asks, on the cusp of slurring. The drink in her hand, the one Sam made, is doing exactly what Clint had hoped it would. “We grew up together, you and I…” Rhodey reacts exactly the way she thought he would, he looks at her with a quiet determination. “Which means you know that I love you, because I’ve told you a million times over. B—but I think I never really told you I respect you. And I do, Rhodes. I respect you more than anyone else in my fucking life. You know that, don’t you?” He nods slowly, with a smile. “I know I fought you tooth and nail when you joined the Air Force but—but you gotta know, it wasn’t because I thought you wouldn’t be brilliant at it. Of course, you would be. I knew that better than anyone. I just…” she licks her lips, afraid of the confession that’s about to come.
“I was being selfish. You weren’t just Tony’s best friend, you’re mine too. And I was fucking terrified of losing my friend, you know?” When she looks at him, he’s already staring back at her with an understanding smile. “It was an asshole move, but now that it’s been a long enough time, I’m gonna pretend that I’m old enough to admit—I have never been more proud to call you my friend, Rhodes. You have always been a hero to me… I’m sorry if I gave the impression otherwise.”
Rhodey doesn’t say anything at first. He just gets up from his seat and walks over to her. And then he kisses the top of her head while pulling her in “Not a damn thing for you to say sorry for, Chef.”
“Thanks, Chef,” she mumbles into the hug he pulls her in.
“Right back atchya, kid.” He kisses her head again. He’s just about to let go, when Tony rushes over to them and jumps in, hugging them both harder.
“This is by far the most emotional team building exercise I have ever seen,” Hill speaks up.
Oh, you sweet summer child. “That you’ve ever been a part of,” Y/n corrects her, fighting her way out of the bear hug the two men had engulfed her in.
“Oh no no no no no.”
“You really thought I’d forget about you, Hill?”
“I am not a part of this,” Hill retorts. “I’m categorically not an Avenger.”
“What the hell is up with you guys and rejecting the Avenger title?” She looks around the room. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think it’s cursed or something.” She takes a sip of her drink, “Look, Hill, you don’t know very much about me—”
“Apart from the suspicious fact that you’re a lawyer who can kick some serious ass,” Hill provides.
“Apart from that, yes,” she agrees. “So, I’m gonna tell you something—I know everything there is to know about everyone I meet. See, before Howie took me in, life wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for me.”
“But it is now, that I’m part of it?” Tony pipes in, without any preamble as he and Rhodey take their previous seats again.
She ignores him, rolling her eyes. “Which kinda gave way to a laundry list of character flaws, one of which was a crippling and annoying amount of trust issues—it led me to develop a habit of digging into the past of anyone I had more than a one minute conversation with… I haven’t just read Nat’s files—I have made one on every single person in this room—including you. Now, the files might not tell me who you are, but as I’ve already stated, I happen to believe that a person is defined by their actions. And holy shit, Hill—you’ve got absolutely no right calling yourself anything less than an Avenger.”
She shifts to the edge of her seat. She can’t get close to Hill, who’s sitting on the floor, on the other side of the table, so this is the best she’s got right about now. “You’re painfully smart and confoundingly determined. You don’t take shit from anyone—not from Fury, not from the billionaire genius and not from the Super Soldier.” She smiles at her then, “And that makes you a fucking badass. And the rest of it? Like the op in Transnistria?” Maria’s eyes widen at the mention of it. Told ya. “In my eyes, shit like that makes you a fucking hero.”
And there it is again.
Silence.
Some more of it.
Hill, herself, is the one who breaks it this time. “Anyone ever tell you, you know too fucking much for a lawyer?”
Chuckling, she slides back into her seat, finishing up her drink. “Only the people who couldn’t afford me.”
She looks over the people in front of her, and she has to end it off on a good note, doesn’t she? “With all that said and done, I need you crazy kids to know that I meant it with every fiber of my being when I said that I’m grateful to be associated with every single one of you… but I will charge you all my entire hourly rate for every single litigation you get me and yourself trapped in. And I am very expensive.”
Everyone breaks into a laugh.
Well, everyone except Tony.
“Hold on, aren’t you forgetting someone?” Tony asks. When all he gets in response is a cocked brow from her, he points from himself to Steve. “What? Me and the Capsicle don’t get a heart to heart from Miss Summa Cum Laude Y/n Stark? How’s that fair?”
“You really want me to sit here and wax poetic about the two of you?”
“Why not?” Steve asks, with a cheeky grin.
“Really? That’s what you want?”
“As the old man said, why not?” Tony doubles down, kicking back with his feet.
“Cause you’re the two men I lov—care about most in the whole world,” she states. Fuck. Almost fucked that up, colossally. “You want a public proclamation of it now?”
Steve smiles at her, “Maybe we do, doll.”
Meanwhile, Tony takes this moment to stare at her and mouth the word ‘care’ like a fucking insult. The motherfucker is mocking her, giggling and snickering like a third grader and Y/n can’t even do anything about it. Cause Steve’s already looking at her, and if she gives in now, there’d be hell for her to pay.
She’ll get back at her brother some other fucking time.
“Fine,” she says, just to get Tony to stop. “Let’s start with you, shall we, Cap?”
Steve gets comfortable in his seat. “Let’s hear it, doll.”
And fine. If he’s gonna be cocky about it, it’s only fair for her to make him eat his shit-eating grin.
Ignoring Tony’s knowing gaze, she lets herself relax in her chair.
“Steven Grant Rogers, the man out of time,” she begins. “You know, I have been hearin’ tall tales about you since I was a fucking teenager. All these stories of the great Captain America, the soldier, the righteous man… the hero. I heard all about your adventures and your bravery, your crazy, damn near impossible mission, in the face of great, undefeatable odds… And you know what I thought?” Steve quirks his brow. “I thought, what a steaming hot load of bullshit!” Everyone laughs, but Tony’s sounds out the loudest, obviously. “They’d talk about you like you were this great, ineffable being—not even human. To them, you were larger than life. And I’d think what motherfucking horseshit!” She plays with the empty glass in her hand.
“I’m not saying they were lying but—” She shrugs. “Howie was always an unreliable narrator, and the rest of them were probably just caught up in the Captain America of it all…” But then… “But then I met you and suddenly,” she tongues her cheek, “it all made sense…” Steve’s smile falls away and gives way to a sort of startling realization. “It made sense that Howard Stark—a man who had very little faith in humanity—didn’t just talk about you like a friend, or like a hero, but like someone he aspired to be. It made sense then, that Peggy Carter…” His eyes shine and ears perk up at the mention of her name, “Fell in love with you.” She can feel the weight of Tony's gaze on her, telling her silently to not give away too much, to not reveal more than she had, to not dwell on this one particular topic. She gives in to her brother’s silent plea. “Even before the serum, you always fought for a choice, and made the right one when you got it, no matter how hard it was.” She exhales heavily.
“You fight for what is right, damn the consequences. You fight true and you fight hard.” She smiles a little then, “Now, I won’t go as far as to say that you’re some ineffable being, because you’re not. You’re a man, and you make mistakes. But—but from what I understand, the true character of a man is how he acts when faced with those mistakes. How he works to rectify them.” She’s a little shy about it when she says, “And I think I can say this now—I know you. The Steve Rogers behind the Captain America of it all… So, please understand that I mean it when I say—You’re a good man in a storm.”
She pauses so the words can hit as hard as she wants them to. And they do. Steve, her Steve does the thing he does when he feels overwhelmed, he sits up straighter and broadens his shoulder—like he’s being awarded a medal. “And while, it a fucking honor getting to share a battlefield with you, I will maintain to my dying day,” her smile slips out, “that getting to call you mine is a far bigger accomplishment.”
For a second, she thinks Steve’s malfunctioned.
“I think you broke him,” Natasha comments, and fuck she has to agree.
“Is he breathing?” Clint asks, sounding genuinely worried.
“I—” Tony turns to look at Steve whose eyes are set on her. “I don’t think so.” He begins clicking his finger in front of Steve’s face. “Hey? Hey, Steve? Anyone in there?” Steve doesn’t even fucking blink.
“Stop that!” Hill reprimands him by throwing a stray popcorn kernel at Tony. Who does stop but looks at her, offended.
“Rogers? Are you with us?” Thor questions from his seat.
“I think we should check his pulse,” Bruce states, leaning forward with creased brows.
“I don’t know, doesn’t it feel like if you touch him, he’ll—spontaneously combust into flames?” Rhodey wonders aloud.
“I’m with Rhodey on this one, give him a second. He’s just rebooting,” Sam suggests.
“Or maybe the years just caught up to him,” Tony retorts. “I think the old man’s a goner.” He turns to Y/n and says, “I think you killed your dear boyfriend, Stark—”
Before Tony can finish, Steve’s on his knees, in front of her in the blink of an eye.
“Steve—”
She’s cut off mid-sentence, swallowed by the delightfully crushing weight of a 6-foot-something Super Soldier as Steve Rogers closes the space between them in a kiss that feels like reverence made tangible.
He’s on his knees before her—not in surrender, but in devotion. His hands, strong, battle-worn, are impossibly gentle as they frame her face, thumbs brushing reverently along her cheekbones like he’s committing her to memory. Like she’s something holy.
The kiss itself is deliberate, deep, but never demanding. His lips press against hers with an almost aching care, a silent whisper of gratitude, of thanks that he cannot express with words, something dangerously close to worship. It’s not about hunger. It’s about feeling. About letting her know that he heard her, and he was rendered speechless with the weight of her words.
Her hands sink into his hair, nails dragging lightly against his scalp, and he shudders. Shudders.
A man who has stood unshaken in the face of war, of gods, of the end of the world—and yet here he is, kneeling, unraveling, offering himself up at the altar of her.
The world around them still moves—distant voices, the soft creak of leather beneath her, their friends wolf whistles and crass comments at the overt display—but it doesn’t touch them. Steve kisses her like she’s the only thing that has ever truly mattered. Like she’s the one thing he ever got without having to fight with his entire might for.
When he finally pulls back, just barely, his forehead resting against hers, his breath is warm, uneven, filled with something raw. His fingers trail down her arms, tracing paths that feel like promises.
“Had to do that,” he murmurs, voice rough, a prayer in itself. “Hope you don’t mind.”
She exhales, a slow, wrecked thing, and tightens her grip in his hair. Like she’d ever let him go. “Don’t mind at all, handsome.” She kisses him once again. Quick and short.
“Thank you,” he says then, kissing her cheek. “You don’t know how much—thank you.”
And that makes her roll her eyes, because what the fuck does he have to thank her for?
“Go back to your seat, handsome. Before this becomes something less appropriate for public consumption.” She pushes him off. “Come on. Get away from me!”
Laughing, Steve obliges.
“Well, that got real steamy, real quick,” Tony comments, a little too cheeky for her liking.
Their eyes meet and she hums softly. Looking at the last vestiges of liquor in the glass in her hand, she says slowly, “I guess this brings me to you—” she looks up at him, “Anthony Edward Stark… the boy who saved me.”
No one else in the room understands the connotation of the words, the weight behind them, except the two of them. It makes the cunning smile from Tony’s face fall away. He didn’t see this shift in her tone coming. He didn’t think she’d reveal herself like this, not even this tiny bit. He sobers immediately.
And fuck, we can’t have that.
She turns to the crowd then, “When Tony was younger…” She shakes her hand in casual estimation, “12, I think?” She nods to herself, satisfied with her guess. “Howie shipped him off to boarding school after he broke some rule or another. Doesn’t matter.” She dismisses out of hand, because it truly doesn’t. “Now, what you gotta know about Tony, is that he was a late bloomer.” Snickers sound out from around the room.
“Thanks, Stark,” Tony admonishes her with no real heat.
She smiles, and corrects herself, “Not like that, I meant he was small for his age.” She pulls up her hand to her head to indicate his height. “He also cried a lot.” She shakes her head with fondness of the little Tony Stark in her memory. “I mean, I could make him cry by just calling him an asshole—he cried a lot.” She chuckles, Tony does too. “And… there is no nice way to say this… um, all that made him pretty fucking easy to pick on.”
Her smile fades as she continues, “So, when he would call me every night from the boarding school to tell me about his day… I knew he’d been crying.” She grits her teeth. “He wouldn’t say anything, of course. He would—he’d quip and crack jokes, and bitch about the classes and the teachers. He would act like everything was dandy—like everything was fine for a genius, scared little boy, at a school full of dickhead rich kids, who were taught by their parents to make everyone who was different feel lesser than…” She bites the inside of her cheeks to stop herself from breaking. “I’d ask him, again and again, ‘What’s wrong, Tones? Tell me what’s wrong, and we’ll fix it, together.’” She shakes her head, “He wouldn’t fess up. He’d say, ‘Everything’s fine, Y/n. Quit bein’ a worry wart.’ He’d act like everything was okay… But I could tell. ‘Course I could…”
She runs a hand through her hair, and exhales slowly, mustering up a smile. “So, imagine my surprise when I get a call one day and this fucker is just vibrating with pure excitement.” Her smile grows, as she puts a hand to her ear, imitating a phone. “‘What is it, Tones? What happened?’” She laughs a little. “‘I made a friend’ he said. ‘I made a friend, his name is Wallace! He just got transferred here from Hudson. You wanna talk to him?’ Of course I did!” Everyone else in the room matches her smile with their own brilliant ones. “So I’m talking to Wallace and fuck, a great kid! Apparently he was like a mini Thor?” She points at the God of thunder who looks like he’s a minute away from swooning. “Pretty big for his age?” She nods to herself. “Not the smartest kid you’ll ever meet, but he was kind. You know?” Everyone nods in unison, making her smile wider.
“So, I’m excited, Tony is clearly very excited, and now fucking Wallace is excited. We’re fucking brimming with it.” She slows down then, brings her hand to her lips and fidgets with them. “But then… the next night, I’m waiting by the phone for three hours, I don’t get a call.” Suddenly the tone in the room shifts. “It’s ass o’clock at night, I barge into Howie’s study and I pester the shit outta him for like two hours straight till he calls the School to check in on Tony. When he finally does, they tell us it’s all peachy. They tell us Tony’s asleep, safe and sound in his bed.” She sits up, “Of course, I don’t buy that, but he is safe. So, who knows? Maybe he had a rough day. Maybe he needed a night—some space to gather himself and he’ll tell me all about it tomorrow.” She hits the back of her hand into her palm. “But tomorrow night comes, and again—I don’t get a call.” She leans forward, just to bask in the curiosity that everyone’s wearing on their faces right now.
“Now that’s fucking suspicious.” She sits up straight then, “But I gotta play my cards right. I can’t wake up Howard again and light a fire under his ass. If anything had happened to Tony the school would have been obligated to call—Can’t afford to upset the guy who’s funding their new science wing. So, I gotta play it smart, I can’t be the boy who cried wolf.” She shrugs, “I gotta wait it out. Wait for him to call me tomorrow.” She pauses for a second, letting the suspense build. “Cut to—next night. No call.” She throws up her hands, and eases back into her seat.
“Means, it’s DEFCON 1. I am now screaming at the top of my lungs, telling Howard to call the School and check in on Tony. He’s yelling right back at me—telling me I’m overreacting. And fuck that. ‘I know Tony! I know my brother, Howard! And I am telling you, something is really fucking wrong! Just call the school, goddamn it!’” Her hands are flying everywhere as she enacts the entire scene out. “In the middle of all this, Maria walks in—and then shit hits the fucking fan. Now it’s Howie against me and Maria,” she enunciates with her hand. “The entire Stark Household is a fucking battlefield. Bullets are flying everywhere—curses the likes of which you have never heard. I have the telephone in my hand,” she begins acting out her words once again, “and I’m about to hurl that shit at Howard’s head so fucking hard, if he doesn’t make the goddamn call—” her voice quiets suddenly, “that we almost miss it when it rings.” Everyone’s suddenly on alert.
Her voice remains soft as she continues, with only a hint of a smile, “Now, we’ve made such a big, fat fuss about the whole thing, that even Howie’s on edge. He picks up the phone before it even has a chance to ring a second time.” She brings her hand to her face, taking a second before she breaks the suspense. “It’s the school,” she tells them. “Tony Stark has been expelled from their fine establishment for using household appliances to electrocute the shit out of the Mayor’s son.” She smiles proud and wide.
She shrugs, “Now, he’s not a violent kid, so why would he go and do that?” She gives them all a pause to guess, but it’s a rhetorical question and everyone treats it as such. “‘Cause of the bullying? Come on. He’d been living with that shit for a year—he didn’t break. So why now?” She hopes her face reflects the pride she feels inside when she says, “It’s ‘cause the douchebag had gone after Wallace.”
When she looks around at the room, everyone’s eyes have gotten a new kind of reverence as they look at her brother.
So she looks at him too. “When you came back from your God awful vacation in the desert and told me you wanted to be a hero, you might have thought of it as a career pivot—but to me… It was a prophecy coming true.” She can tell he’s trying really fucking hard not to cry. “Natasha Romanoff is my favorite Avenger, but you are my favorite fucking superhero, Tony Stark. Always have been, always will be.”
Just as Y/n makes her grand proclamation, Tony abruptly gets to his feet and turns away from the group. His hands rise to his face, fingers pressing against his eyes. She knows exactly what he’s doing.
“Tony?” Natasha calls out, her voice deceptively sweet. “Are you—Tony.”
“Is he crying?” Clint asks, slowly.
“He’s crying,” Rhodey confirms, deadpan.
“Absolutely not!” Tony snaps, but the slight waver in his voice betrays him.
Y/n grins and pushes up from her chair. “Told you it was easy to make him cry,” she announces, strolling over to him.
Tony turns away further, as if sheer willpower will keep his dignity intact. It won’t. Y/n doesn’t care. She wraps her arms around him from the side, her grip firm. “Old habits die hard, don’t they, Stark?” she teases, her voice warm. To make sure he knows she means no harm, she tightens her hold and presses a loud, obnoxious kiss to the side of his head.
“Shut up! It’s your fault!” Tony grumbles, but the sniffling ruins any heat behind it.
She chuckles, rubbing his arms in slow, comforting circles. “You’re the one who wanted me to wax poetic about you.”
“Not this poetic,” he gripes.
“Well, tough luck, genius,” she scolds, lighthearted. “You’re stuck with this—with me, I’m afraid. I’m right behind you, always.”
Tony turns so fast she barely has time to register it before she’s got an armful of Iron Man, holding onto her like she’s his last tether.
“Woah, woah—” she stumbles, unprepared for the sudden weight, but then there’s a steadying hand at the small of her back.
Steve.
With his support, she regains her footing and tightens her grip around Tony, holding onto her brother just as fiercely as he’s holding onto her.
“You’re my favorite too,” Tony whispers in her ear, just for her to hear and no one else. “I need you to know that. You’re my fucking favorite superhero too.”
She doesn’t know what to say to that, so she just kisses his head again and again and again. “Now, get off me you, damn, koala bear!” She pushes him off, not unkindly. “Okay,” she turns to the crowd, "I've hit my yearly quota for feelings in one night. If we don't change the topic soon, I might just self-destruct out of sheer principle.” Clasping the hand Steve has on the small of her back with her own, she looks over the room.
Steve takes the chance and pulls her onto his lap. She yelps in surprise, but he just wraps his hands around her, kissing her neck.
She’s just about to smooch the living shit out of her boyfriend when Clint, sensing the perfect moment to ruin everything, loudly announces, “Well, that was horrifying. I need something aggressively stupid to cleanse my brain.”
“Something not feelings-related,” Tony adds, pointing a warning finger at Y/n like she hasn’t already hit her emotional quota for the year.
Natasha smirks. “Like what? Another round of Guess What’s Gonna Kill Tony First?”
“First of all—rude,” Tony says. “Second, we all know it’s either gonna be my own brilliance or Steve’s disappointment.”
“I never said I was disappointed in you,” Steve says.
“You didn’t have to.”
Rhodey claps Tony on the shoulder. “I’m still putting money on ‘blows himself up doing something unnecessarily dramatic.’”
“Please,” Sam waves him off. “We’ve all got money on that.”
Bruce sighs. “At this point, it’s basic statistics.”
Tony hands shoot up to his chest, and onto his heart, he feigns injury and dramatically gasps like he’s been shot. “Et tu, Bruce?” To that Bruce just laughs in response, shaking his head.
“The only way Tony gets to die is peacefully in his sleep, at the ripe old age of 99!” Y/n announces to the room, ending all scope for argument. It’s a sore subject for her and no one but Tony knows the extent of that. “We’re not playing that morbid fucking game ever again!”
Natasha throws her hands up in surrender. “My bad.” Everyone else too has the decency to look admonished, except Tony who looks at her with fairly well hidden mild concern.
“So, what’s our options here?” Hill chimes in, dissipating the slight tension. “Bar fight? Competitive arson?”
“Something legal,” Bruce interjects quickly, because he knows this group too well.
Sam gestures at Y/n. “Can we get a ruling on what constitutes ‘legal’ in this room?”
She smirks, tilting her glass toward him. “Technically, nothing we do holds up in court.”
“Cleared by the legal department!” Tony declares.
Steve mutters, “I should be more concerned about that than I am,” dropping another kiss on her shoulder.
She throws her head back, chuckling, and kisses his temple in return.
Clint leans forward, rubbing his hands together. “You wanna talk about legal precedent? Let’s talk about divine precedent.” He jerks his chin toward the center of the room, where Mjolnir sits, unassuming and waiting.
Y/n raises an eyebrow. “You’re not seriously about to bring Thor’s hammer into this.”
“Oh, I’m dead serious.” Clint gestures at Thor, eyes narrowing. “Let’s discuss the so-called worthiness clause. By whose standards? Who enforces it? And most importantly—” He leans in. “Who’s to say you’re not just screwing with us?”
Thor pulls out the flask of that good fucking Asgardiaun stuff from his pocket and pours some into his drink. “Ah, Barton, your skepticism wounds me,” but the laugh that follows, renders the sentiment in the words irrelevant.
Clint gestures dramatically at the hammer, spinning the drumstick in his hand, looking around the room like he’s about to expose the world’s greatest con. “But, it’s a trick!”
“Oh no. It’s much more than that,” Thor counters easily, while passing the flask to Steve who takes a swig.
Oh, this is going to be so fucking good.
“Ah, ‘whosoever be he worthy, shall haveth the power!’ Whatever, man! It’s a trick.”
Slowly opening her eyes, Y/N notices that Derek isn’t in bed next to her. Rolling over, she sees that Stiles isn’t in bed either. She rolls back over to look at the clock on Derek’s bedside table—it reads 10:28 AM. Sighing, she debates whether to get out of bed or stay there a bit longer.
She grabs her phone from her bedside table and scrolls through it aimlessly. She starts to type a text to send to her dad when the bedroom door opens. Y/N looks up from her phone as Derek walks in. His plaid pajama pants hang low on his hips while his chest is free of clothing.
“I see you’re finally awake,” Derek teases, lying down next to her. He wraps an arm around her waist and pulls her closer to him, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
“I’m surprised I slept this late. With all my morning shifts, I’m used to getting up way earlier than this.” Y/N replies, cuddling into Derek’s embrace. “When did Stiles leave?”
“He left earlier to get to school. He was running behind, so I told him that we’d put the mattress back so he didn’t have to do it.”
“You are a big softy.” Y/N teases.
Derek rolls his eyes, “Shut up.”
“When do you go in to work today?”
“I took the day off today. Peter and Isaac should be fine on their own today, and Cora will keep them in line anyway.” A month after the fight with Kate, Isaac moved back to Beacon Hills. He says it’s because he got bored of France, but Y/N knows it’s because he missed his friends and pack. Not long after he moved back, Cora did the same. After seeing her brother and his girlfriend plastered all over the internet, she decided to move back for moral support and to protect her brother—not that he needs it.
Isaac and Cora now both work at the Hale Garage. Isaac mostly does smaller things, such as oil changes or dent removals, but Derek has been teaching him other things to help his skills grow. Cora mostly likes to sit up front and work at the front desk. Other than the occasional phone call, appointment setting, or dealing with people who go in, she doesn’t have to do much. She likes that there is not a lot of work that she must do, and Derek likes getting to work with his sister—and he needed someone to take over Lydia’s job with school starting back.
“What about you?” Derek asks.
“I should probably get up and get ready,” Y/N groans. “I’m supposed to meet Steve and Bucky at noon, remember?”
“What are you helping them do again?” Derek asks, watching Y/N roll out of bed and walk to their bathroom.
“I’m supposed to help them move into their new place. I don’t even think they really need my help. I think they are using this as an excuse to hang out with me.” Y/N replies with her toothbrush in her mouth. “It’s also why we got them that stuff yesterday.”
“Do we need a code for if it gets too much for you?”
Y/N laughs, spitting out the toothpaste in her mouth and wiping her face clean, “I think I’ll be okay. Did you want me to speak to Bucky about the open position at the garage?” She wasn’t going to say anything about it, but she does know that Bucky needs a job.
Derek watches as Y/N walks out of their bathroom with clothes in her hands, “What do you think about it?” After Tony and Peter left last night, they didn’t speak about Tony suggesting Bucky for the open position. Derek hasn’t thought about it much either. He’s aware of Bucky’s dislike of him, so he assumes he won’t apply.
“I think,” Y/N says, stripping off her pajamas, “that he needs a job, and Tony thinks he would know what to do. Plus, I know you and Stiles are still a little wary about any of them, so this would give you an opportunity to get to know him a bit.”
“And you’re not?” Derek questions, leaning back against the headboard and watching Y/N as she slowly and teasingly puts on her clothes.
“I am, but this is a way for someone who isn’t me to check one of them out. Since my judgment is clouded, I’m scared I’m going to miss major signs I should be seeing.” It’s not that she thinks they are this group of evil people who are out to get her, but it’s hard for her to trust new people. She has her memories back, and she knows that they love her, but fifteen years is a long time—people change.
She’s changed. She’s not the toddler they knew her as. She’s an adult now with a life that, up until recently, didn't include them. That’s what scares her. It took her three weeks after the war against Kate to cave and look up everything she could about the Avengers. While she knows the media can’t be trusted or believed, she still saw a lot of concerning things.
They are public figures, and how they handled the grief of losing her is plastered all over the internet. From articles to YouTube think-pieces, people never gave them a moment of peace. There are even true-crime podcasts and YouTube channels where people do their makeup with smiles on their faces and talk about the mysterious disappearance of 3-year-old Y/N Stark. She can’t imagine how much pain they were in—and still in.
Y/N is scared that one day, they will pack up her things and take her back to the now-old compound. She sees the pained look in their eyes when she tells stories about herself growing up or when she calls Noah, Dad. What if one day they decide they want to go back to the way it was before Pepper gave her to Hydra and no longer accept her new life?
This isn’t something she thinks of often, and she knows, realistically, that they aren’t going to do anything that she doesn’t want, but the little voice in the back of her mind likes to worry. She hasn’t voiced her concerns to Derek, but he knows how she feels because he feels the same way.
“You think my judgment isn’t clouded?” Derek questions.
“I think that they are putting in an effort right now, so we need to do the same,” Y/N says, crawling into the bed and Derek’s lap to straddle him. “I can just tell him about the position. It doesn’t mean he will apply. And if he does apply, you don’t have to give him the job if he won’t fit. I want us to put in an effort, but not if it’s going to hurt your business.”
Derek stares into Y/N’s eyes before sighing, “Fine, you can tell him about it, but I can’t promise anything.”
“That’s all I’m asking,” Y/N smiles, pressing a kiss onto his lips.
Derek smiles at the happiness radiating off her. She hasn’t said anything to him, but he knows her thoughts around her ‘new family’ are complicated. He knows that he should be putting in more of an effort to get to know them, but it’s hard when some of them don’t seem to like him—some of them being Bucky and Steve.
Steve is, at the least, friendly with him when they come over from time to time. He puts in a little effort for Y/N’s sake, but Derek can tell that Steve isn’t his biggest fan. Bucky, on the other hand, hates him. The few times that Y/N has invited them over for dinner, Bucky puts in the effort to ignore him or glares at him when he speaks. Y/N tries to ease the tension between them, but nothing works. Derek thinks it’s because they are both so protective of Y/N.
Y/N thinks it’s something deeper. Bucky is the only member of the Avengers who hasn’t tried to get to know anyone but Y/N. She doesn’t think it’s because he resents the life that she has outside of them, she thinks he’s scared about what the others think about him and what he’s done. She thinks he’s scared that the others won’t want him around her if they truly know about him.
She knows that dealing with Hydra and knowing about what Hydra has done to her has triggered old, hidden memories and insecurities that he had long buried in his mind. Even though they haven’t spoken about their experiences, she can see the way it’s brought up some old thoughts.
She sees the way he flinches when Stiles refers to him as ‘Winter Soldier.’ She sees the way he withdraws within himself when Scott talks about how he believes he can save everyone and goes on his moral high ground I’m better than everyone spiels. She sees the way he flinches when people touch his metal arm—even Steve.
Y/N wishes that Bucky would give the others a chance and get to know them or even spend some one-on-one time with her without Steve or someone else so she can tell him about them. If he did, he would realize that he has a lot more in common with them than he thinks, and they don’t judge him for his past.
If he spoke to Stiles, he would realize that he understands what it’s like to hurt and be responsible for people’s deaths while not in control of your mind and body. If he spoke to Liam, he would realize that Liam understands what it’s like to fear losing control. If he spoke to Lydia, he would realize that she understands what it’s like to be afraid of your own mind. She’s sure if he spoke to them and got to know them, he’d find even more in common.
“You owe me for this,” Derek says, his hands settling on her hips.
“What do you have in mind?” Y/N smirks, running her hands up and down his abs.
“I’m sure I can think of something.”
“I’m sure you can.” She leans in to kiss when his phone goes off on his side table.
“What now?” Derek groans as Y/N reaches over to grab his phone. He takes the phone from her hands to see a message from Peter. “I guess I will be going in to work today.”
“What happened?”
“Someone just dropped their car off, and it needs its brakes replaced.” He says while he types back a response to whoever texted him.
“Doesn’t Peter know how to do that?”
“They apparently requested me specifically.”
“I don’t blame them.” Y/N teases, her fingers running along the waistband of his underwear. “I’d specially request you too.”
Derek sets his phone down next to him and grabs Y/N’s hands to stop her from teasing him more, “If you keep teasing me, we both won’t be leaving this bed today.”
“That’s not much of a threat.” Y/N rolls her before sliding off him and fake sighing in disappointment, “But if you insist on going to work…”
“Well, it is what’s paying for the remodel of the house.”
“I assumed your large inheritance and the money made from the people living in this building was going toward the remodel.”
“No, most of my inheritance is still safely tucked away while the money made from this building has gone toward my new Camaro and making sure you and the pack are taken care of,” Derek presses a quick kiss to her forehead before getting out of bed.
“If Peter has $117 million in inheritance money, how much do you have?” Y/N asks, watching Derek walk over to the dresser.
“Let’s just say if we wanted to, we would never have to work a day in our lives, and neither would the people around us.”
“You have that much money, and you still make me go to work?”
“Is this you trying to tell me that you’re only with me for my money?” Derek teases, walking into the open bathroom to finish getting ready.
“No, this is me wondering why you force your hot girlfriend to work if you have enough money to have her naked on a beach somewhere with nothing but time to do other things.” She can hear Derek’s laugh echo throughout their bathroom. “If I knew that I could possibly marry into old money, I wouldn’t be trying so hard for my bachelor’s, and I would’ve dropped out of school a while ago.”
“Possibly marry, huh? Who said I want to marry you?” Derek questions teasingly.
Y/N rolls her eyes playfully, “Oh, so you don’t want to marry me? I guess I better start packing my things then…”
Derek laughs as he walks out of the bathroom, fully dressed, toward Y/N, “I think we both know that one day you will be Mrs. Y/N Hale.”
“Who said I’ll take your last name?”
“You don’t have to take my name if you don’t want to.”
Y/N thinks for a moment, “Actually, I think we should get married as soon as possible so then I don’t have to have the awkward conversation with anyone about whether I’m going to stay a Stilinski or become a Stilinski-Stark. If I’m a Hale, then there will be no room to argue.”
“Save something for the vows.” Derek jokes before leaning down and pressing a kiss to her lips. “I’ve got to go. Hopefully, I won’t be gone too long. What time will you be back?”
“I don’t know how long I’ll be at Steve and Bucky’s, but tonight I’m going to the station to help my dad get ready for his date tonight.”
“I can join tonight if you want me to.” Derek knows that Y/N is happy that her dad has finally decided to get out there and go on a date after years of throwing himself into his work and struggling with the death of his wife, but he wants to be there for her in case seeing her dad with a different woman brings up some old feelings.
“Sure. I’ll come back here before the station if you’re done with work by then.”
“Okay.” Derek grabs his phone and presses one last kiss to Y/N’s lips. “Love you. I’ll text you when I get off.”
“Okay. Love you more.” Y/N smiles widely at him, watching him leave as he rolls his eyes at her childishness.
After he walks out the door, she grabs her phone to check and see if she has any notifications. Turning her phone on, she notices that Steve has texted her saying the moving truck arrived a little early if she wants to go over now. She quickly replies to him before grabbing her stuff to head over to his new place.
---
Y/N steps out of her car in front of Steve and Bucky’s new rental house. The four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath home is smaller than what Steve and Bucky are used to but considered average-sized in Beacon Hills. It’s also only two blocks away from the Stilinski house. Even though Y/N doesn’t live there anymore, she still considers it her home and is there quite frequently. She knows that is part of why they chose to rent it.
Walking up to the open storage container sitting in the driveway, she sees Steve and Bucky removing boxes from it and carrying them into the house, “Hey!”
“Hey! Thanks for coming.” Steve says, setting the box down in the garage so he can hug her. “We’ve moved all the big items into the house already. The only thing left are the boxes.”
She looks into the open storage container to see a few left, “How is there only three boxes left? Didn’t this just get here?”
“We don’t have that much stuff.”
“How?”
“We lived at headquarters. Most of the stuff there was Tony’s.” Bucky replies, walking into the garage with a rare smile on his face. He pulls Y/N into a tight hug in greeting.
“Did you never think about getting your own place?”
“We did, but a certain incident put that thought to a halt.” Steve answers. From the sad he’s looking at her, Y/N can assume he’s talking about her disappearance. She wants to ask more questions, but she’s not sure that she wants to know the answers. Most of what she knows about how they, and the other Avengers, took her disappearance is from Stiles and the extensive research she did on them.
“Well, then, I guess we need to do a bit of shopping,” Y/N says, moving to grab a box from the storage container. She sets her phone and keys on top of a box before picking it up. “You also need to show me where to put this.”
Steve picks up the box he previously set down and motions for Y/N to follow him into the house. She follows him through the laundry room and into the open kitchen and living room area. Y/N sets the box in her hands down on the other boxes that are piled up against the far living room wall and grabs her phone and keys from the top of it.
“Do you have any furniture, or is it just boxes of stuff?” Y/N asks, noticing that she doesn’t see anything other than boxes.
“Our couch and bedframe should be here tomorrow,” Steve replies.
“Is that it?”
“We thought that maybe we could go shopping together one day when you aren’t busy,” Bucky says, walking in with the last two boxes. “If you’re interested?”
“Sure. I’ll have to check my schedule and see when I’m available.” Between work, rebuilding the Hale house, and splitting her time between her two different families, she feels like she’s always doing something or having to meet with someone. She knows she needs to start saying no when people ask her to do stuff, but she has a hard time doing that. She sets her purse and phone on the kitchen counter but keeps her keys in her hand as she turns back to them, “Where’s your cleaning supplies?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, we should probably scrub the place down before we start unpacking, so what box is your cleaning stuff in?”
“We don’t have any cleaning stuff,” Steve says, double-checking the labels on the boxes even though he knows they don’t have any.
“Then how did you clean at the compound?”
“Tony had people that did that,” Bucky replies.
“Even your room?” Y/N doesn’t understand how they don’t have any cleaning stuff. Even if they didn’t clean at the compound, they should have bought stuff for their new place.
“Yes.” Steve and Bucky look a little embarrassed that they are unprepared.
“Did you plan on hiring someone to clean this place too?”
“Um,” Steve doesn’t know how to answer that. He and Bucky hadn’t discussed much about their moving situation. They just wanted a break from the Avengers and wanted to be closer to Y/N.
Y/N smiles teasingly at the scared and embarrassed look on their faces, “So you have no furniture, nothing to clean with, and judging by the labels on these boxes, nothing to eat with either. Did you own anything at the compound, or did Tony own everything?”
Steve and Bucky glance at each other with wide eyes. They should’ve done some shopping before moving in. Since she said it out loud, they realize they don’t have anything to cook or eat with. Steve is also realizing that they don’t have any toilet paper, laundry detergent, or other things they will need. Anything they needed at the compound was always there. They never needed to buy anything. They also never needed to restock because people would restock things for them.
Y/N laughs a little at them, “Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I kind of assumed this would happen. Follow me.” She turns and walks to the front door as the trail silently behind her. Unlocking and opening the door, she walks over to her parked car, unlocks it, and opens her trunk. “I stopped and got a few things for you yesterday.”
Stepping back from her car, Steve and Bucky can see that it’s full of things they need. With her back seats down, she was able to get them more than she planned to. She bought them a nice vacuum, a broom and dustpan set, a Swiffer mop, rags, dusters, and various cleaning sprays and scrubs. She even bought them toilet paper, laundry detergent, dryer balls, dish soap, towels, and other various necessities.
Closer to her front seats, there are boxes of pots and pans, plates, silverware, cups, and a few other kitchen items. In her passenger seat, there is a stack of organizers and containers. She even got them a few games and puzzles for fun.
“Thank you, but there’s no way we need all of this,” Steve says in shock, giving Y/N a little side hug to show his appreciation.
“Do you want your place to be semi-clean or clean-clean? Also, not everything is for cleaning. From the way you and the others talk about the compound, I assumed you would need a few things.”
“This is still a lot of stuff. You didn’t need to do this,” Bucky says, pulling her into a hug too, “but thank you.”
“You’re welcome, but I’m not the only one you need to thank. I might have been the one who picked everything out, but Derek was the one who paid for it.” Y/N says, pulling away from Bucky. She can see the smiles on their face falter at her Derek paid for it.
“We will make sure to thank him the next time we see him,” Steve says, his smile a little more forced than before, “right, Buck?”
Bucky hums in fake agreement. It’s not that he’s less grateful now that he knows Derek paid for it, he just doesn’t like Derek. He swears he’s just protective of Y/N, and he doesn’t trust Derek, but Nat thinks he’s jealous. She also thinks he’s bitter that Y/N has this whole life that, up until recently, doesn’t include them.
“Well, let’s get all this stuff inside and start scrubbing everything down,” Y/N says.
---
They spent two hours scrubbing and wiping everything down before taking a break for lunch. Steve ordered two pizzas and a few drinks for them. Now, they are standing around the kitchen island as they quietly eat their lunch.
They haven’t spoken much since they started cleaning. Y/N put on some music, and she showed them what to do, but they didn’t say much after that. Part of it was due to them concentrating on their tasks; the other part was due to them not knowing what to say.
“How has work been?” Steve asks Y/N.
“It’s been good,” Y/N replies, “With no current threats in town, we haven’t been as busy as we sometimes are.”
“Tony said another journalist visited you at work recently.”
Y/N rolls her eyes a little at his protective tone, “They were just some college kid that had a few questions. They were mostly just asking about my thoughts and feelings on everything.”
“What did you tell him?” Buck asks curiously.
“Nothing that he couldn’t have guessed himself. How’s your job search been?”
Bucky huffs in frustration at that question, “I had a Zoom interview two days ago, but they only asked me questions about Steve the whole time. From the Captain American photo I could see in the corner of the room, I’m guessing she was a fan.”
“Well, I know of a job opportunity if you’re interested.” She knows he’s not going to like her suggestion, but she told Derek she would tell Bucky about it.
“It’s not at the hospital, is it? I’m looking for something less stressful, not more stressful. I also don’t think I’m qualified.”
“No, it’s at the auto shop. Derek is looking for someone to help out, and Tony said you would know what to do.”
Bucky almost declined immediately, but a sharp look from Steve stopped him, “I don’t know…”
“You can always just apply and think on it. His interview process is pretty simple. He’ll ask you some questions, and then he tests you out for about an hour to see if you’re a good fit. There’s no guarantee that you’ll get the job, and if you do, you can decide whether to accept or not.” Y/N shrugs her shoulders as she wipes the pizza grease off her hands.
Bucky thinks for a moment. On one hand, he wants a new job, and this one would allow him to learn more about Derek. On the other hand, Derek would be his boss, and he would have to spend time and speak to him too. “I’ll think about it.”
“Great,” From the smile on Y/N’s face, Bucky could tell that was the right answer.
They finish eating their lunch before unpacking the boxes. After they unpacked the last box, they said their goodbyes, and Y/N left to go home to pick up Derek.
---
“Maybe I should’ve gotten a haircut.” The sheriff mumbles, looking at himself in a handheld mirror.
“I think you should be lucky that you still have hair to cut,” Stiles says.
“I think you look great,” Scott counters.
“Thank you, son I should’ve had.” The sheriff smirks at Scott.
“Don’t listen to Stiles, Dad. I think you look handsome.” Y/N says, fixing his hair a little with her hand.
“God, what am I doing?” The sheriff struggles with his tie before Y/N stops him.
“What you’re doing is taking a night off and going to enjoy a lovely dinner with your date,” Y/N replies, fixing his tie.
“And who are you having dinner with?” Stiles asks.
“None of your business,” Noah answers.
“Why does Y/N get to know and not me?”
“I didn’t tell her who it was. Derek was the one who figured it out.”
“Derek knows too?!”
Derek just smirks and sits back against the sheriff’s desk. He likes that he knows something that Stiles doesn’t.
“Stilinski!” Someone yells somewhere in the sheriff’s station.
They follow the sheriff out of his office to see the boy who yelled for him. His lawyer is standing in front of him as Parrish and another officer stand next to him.
“I’m going to kill you,” he says, staring at Noah.
“Donovan, if you think that shocks me, remember it is well-documented in your Anger Expression Inventory. Officers, take him out of here.” Noah says, nodding his head at the officers.
“When I say I’m going to kill you, I mean I’m going to get a knife, and I’m going to stab you until your heart stops beating.”
The station is silent for a moment before Stiles breaks it, “Wow, that was awesome. Really, that was great. Do it again, but as Christopher Walkin.”
“Maybe shed a tear this time. I want to see the anger issues overwhelm you as you think about the little cell you're about to live in.” Y/N adds.
Donovan nods his head, stepping back before lunging forward toward them. Scott jumps in front of Stiles as Derek jumps in front of Y/N. Donovan continues to yell as the officers pull him out of the station and toward the transportation van.
“Well, he’s got some issues,” Y/N mumbles, slipping her hand into Derek’s to reassure him that she’s okay. “We should get out here so you can get to your date.”
“Us too,” Stiles says after he finishes his quiet conversation with Scott.
“You have to promise to call me afterward and tell me how it went. If I don’t hear from you, I will call you myself.” Y/N says, fixing her dad’s tie one last time.
“I will text you afterward,” The sheriff compromises.
“Thank you.” She hugs him goodbye, and Derek whispers a little dating advice to him before they leave. Stiles and Scott trail behind them before breaking off toward Stiles’ jeep.
“Do we want to pick something up or make something at home?” Derek asks as they sit in his Camaro.
“I want you to make that dish of yours I really like. I think we have the stuff for it.” Y/N replies, trying to give Derek her sweetest look so he won’t turn her down.
Derek huffs and rolls his eyes as he turns the car on, “The things I do for you.”
“Do you think I should be worried about what that guy said to my dad?” Y/N asks quietly. She made fun of him in the moment, and she likes to think that nothing will ever happen to her dad with her and everyone else around to protect him, but they do live in Beacon Hills, where anything is possible.
“With the things he has to deal with, I think some angry human boy is the least of his worries. He’s probably more worried about his date than him.”
“That’s true. It’s just that everything has been calm here recently. I can’t help but worry that something is coming. Stiles seems to be worried about something, so I’m worried too. Maybe it’s nothing, but there’s this feeling in my gut that something’s not right.”
Pepper: We already did that.
Tony: It's 3:30...
Pepper: Thank you...
Peter: A lot of singles in there.
Happy: What exactly do you do at this club?
Y/N *sarcastic*: Oh, right. 'Cause I'm a stripper, Happy. Hehe...
*silence*
Y/N: OH MY GOD! Do you really think I'm a stripper?!
*Pepper drops the wad of cash*
Sunday mornings🎧
It was one of those lazy Sunday mornings when the sunlight filtered through the windows just enough to create a soft, golden glow around the room. You were wrapped in a cozy blanket, sipping on your coffee, when you heard a gentle knock at the door. You smiled and set your mug down, knowing exactly who it was.
“Come in,” you called out, your voice light and soft.
Sunday Kalogeras stepped into the room, a grin on her face, her dark curls bouncing slightly as she moved. She was wearing a loose, comfy sweatshirt and jeans, clearly having embraced the easygoing vibe of the day.
“Morning, sunshine,” she teased as she walked over to the couch where you were sitting. “How’s my favorite person doing today?”
You couldn’t help but smile wider at her presence. “Better now that you’re here.”
She slid onto the couch beside you, her arm instinctively wrapping around your shoulder. “Good answer,” she said, leaning her head gently against yours. “I brought breakfast. Pancakes, your favorite.”
Your heart melted. “You’re too good to me.”
“Anything for you,” she murmured softly, before stealing a kiss from your cheek.
The two of you spent the morning talking about anything and everything, all while enjoying the warm breakfast she’d made for you both. There was something about her presence that made everything feel effortless, like time slowed down when you were with her.
As you finished up, Sunday let out a content sigh. “I could just stay here with you all day, you know that?” she said, her voice full of sincerity. “Nothing else sounds as good.”
You looked at her, a playful glint in your eyes. “Well, as long as you’re up for it, I think I could get used to it, too.”
Sunday grinned, leaning in to kiss your forehead. “Then it’s a date. Just us, cuddled up and enjoying the day.”
And for the rest of the day, you both stayed close, basking in each other’s company, perfectly content in the simplicity of your shared love.
What a strange little Goddess ( Bucky Barnes x Odinsdottir! reader ) part one
summary : a routine hostage recovery mission goes anyway but routinely as they find that the hostage didn't really need their help at all . once more surprised she not of earth but close to two gods that leads to revelation of how Loki and thor's sister went missing all those years and how did she end up on hydra's radar .
warning : tbh just goofy slight comedic element , a little misunderstanding here and there , follows all and no timelines ( so dead character are alive here) , enemies to lovers sort of thing .
Of course it happened again , back into the clutches of determined psychotic ass hats , she didn’t even need to open her eyes to know her situation, it was clear from the smell of the damp and still stagnant water that always seemed to be in every one of their cells . like some decor element must have in an evil lair . A familiar sting to her head because of course their tactics didn’t change so this time it was on her . Groan fell from her lips as her eyes finally opened , focusing to what little light there was as it only confirmed it . glancing around the room to see the dark silhouette coming forward.
“ wow ominous “ she laughed .
“ wait what.. Nevermind good to see you’re finally awake “ the voice called .
“ yeah yeah let’s get it over with , you know big plans and such blah blah “ she laughed more for the fact the idiots put normal rope on her hands as she felt her palms warming up .
“ no need to be like this , you see with you we could work well together , you could make hydra powerful as it once was “ he smiled.
“ yeah i’d rather sit in shark infested water while bleeding “ she rolled her eyes . “ look buddy can we skip this part it’s kinda boring now” she yawned as he nodded only for her head jerk to the side , the burning sting on her cheek and metallic taste filled her mouth and trickle down her cheek .
“ oh not even a safe word , say sorry and i won’t hurt you too much “ she turned to see the tall man glaring down at her another nod from the first man and kick straight to her gut expelling the air from her lung .
“ oh fucker you are first” she gasped trying to suck the oxygen back into her lungs .
“ mouth shut and he won’t do it again , don’t worry dear we will get you to comply” the first man stood more closely as she could see the white coat on his body , great a scientist .
“ hey do you smell burning ?” the agent asked brows furrowed as the scientist looked to see a puff of smoke .
“ you idiot’s where is the metal cuff .. she an elem…” was all he got out of his mouth before being blown to the other side of the room .
“ now i did say if you said sorry “ she held her hand up looking above him briefly as it began to form .
“ fuck you “ he glared ready to attack only to hit the ground and ice shattering all around him .
“ thought he should cool down” she laughed turning to the scientist who frankly looked like he was going to piss his pants . “ you got anything to say ?”
“ we will get you “ he growled only to be slammed up against the wall thick ice shackles holding him place.
“ it’s been fun but honestly no means no “ she smiled patting his cheek only for an explosion to be heard in the distance and the wall near her to blow apart.
“ i got the hostage.. you sure she’s a hostage “ the red and gold robot called before the top came up and she could see a man looking both shocked and impressed.
“ hey how’s it going “ she gave him small wave.
“ erm yeah it’s good… what the fuck happened here” he asked .
“ they tied me up and slapped me … hey your iron ” .
“ yes…”
“ you wanna get the door , hey do you know thor and loki “ she beamed up watching the door coming apart .
“ yeah i do, kid you ok ?” he asked.
“ cheek stings but i’ll be ok , thanks for the door “ she smiled skipping out the room as he and the scientist's head tilt in confusion at what just happened .
All the halls were the same , all their layout where identical as she made her way around not seeing an agent in sight until she got to the main entrance watching a battle of a lifetime , shield and avengers against hydra although it was a little outnumbered.
“ GET HER” the unmistakable voice of Brock Rumlow called as over fifty agents rushed her way .
“ as fun as this could be , i’m bored “ she rolled her eyes raising her palms as ice balls as big as basketballs came down knocking the agents to the ground before she remade them sending them around the room hitting anyone that was hydra while everyone else stood stunned.
“ remind me why fury sent us to rescue her?” the man she knew as hawkeye asked.
“ impressive” the red head woman nodded .
“ We'll get you back, we always do “ brock yelled only for her to punch him knocking him out .
“Talk about broken record am i right , thanks for the rescue” she beamed around the room .
“ you’re wel..come “ Captain america said unsurely.
“you need a lift out of here, i’m natasha but you can call me nat” .
“ nah i’m fine i can get the bus back to new york “ she shrugged .
“ Not from Siberia, you can't, “ a man chuckled .
“ shit this isn’t this canada” she asked.
“ YOU’RE SAVOIR IS HEre…Y/N what in the norns are you doing here?” .
“ Loki, “ she smiled brightly diving in his arms .
“ LITTLE ONE?” the booming voice called. “ Friends, why is our sister here?”
“ SISTER” .
“ What the fuck is going on ?”
“ language “ .
“ avengers this is our little sister y/n odinsdottir , y/n these are earth mightiest heroes “ thor smiled brightly pulling her to his side.
“ Again what is going on “ tony voice was here.
“ hey i think i will take that lift after all “ she turned to nat.
Back at the compound with a change of clothe and cup of hot coco in her hand as she looked around the space .
“ nice place you got here “ she nodded feeling slight nervous all eyes on her .
“ yeah thanks… now explanation would help ?” tony stark deadpanned.
“ not much to explain really standard ran away from home fell through the bi frost ended on earth and been chase by hydra ever since “ she shrugged .
“ how long have you been on earth ?” .
“ ten years no biggie “
“ no biggie ? we have been looking and mourning you all this time “ loki snapped.
“ pot kettle, i didn’t mean to get lost on midgard but i couldn’t stay at home stupid odin wanted to marry me off “ she huffed. “ you can not make me go back “ she crossed her arms .
“ come lets get you checked over we can bring you to a room to rest after” nat smiled as he held her hand out .
“ yes sure she can stay here it not like you need my permission or i own the place “ tony rolled his eyes.
“ i’ll go speak with my father “ thor exited the room .
“ there goes the lawn “ .
“ sooo , she’s cool huh ?” scott snorted looking around the room .
“ she hiding something “ loki mused .
“ blocking something out “ wanda agreed .
The palace was quiet , not a soul to been seen or heard as the skies outside were dark . he could see the guard already there , they were expecting them , already awaiting his arrival while he tried to control the anger of the situation . of all people though it didn’t make sense for Odin to push away , she was the one that made the man soft as a teddy bear even in his angriest rants . a hidden joke and teasing amongst siblings to say she was a clear favourite , the baby of them all who could do no wrong. Maybe he was protective over her , when she was gone held that guilt of not being there , even more so. He dreaded the though to even think of the torture she was through all this time . a weight he would carry for rest of his life but a mistake not being repeated while he was still standing. Barely sparing the guard a look , his heart did clench at sight of his mother distress sight as she look around him hoping to see the face of her daughter.
“ WHERE IS SHE “ odin boomed.
“ she refuses to come , she doesn’t want to be wedded off “ he snapped back
“ what are you talking about boy “ he almost looked confused.
“ you deny it , she heard you speak of marrying her off “ thor scoffed never one to speak to his father , to the all father in such a manner.
“ she heard? , where is she? I can explain “ he sighed .
“ midgard she is scared , what were you thinking “ .
“ it wasn’t set in stone if she listen more she would have heard your mother disagree and give me reason” .
“ she’s been through alot it might be hard gain her trust to come back “ .
“ then bring me to her” .
The room was nice it was better than most she had seen even if it’s a little bare but it beat down motel or cell in hydra finest establishments . no sleep coming any time soon as she walked down the halls , not really letting her guard down seemly always waiting for a threat , she spent a decade locked in a game of cat and mouse for so long . grabbing the glass filling the water , as she felt it the presence stalking in a she threw the iced spear in the direction .
“ what the hell “ the ice shattered across the floor . “ F.R.I.D.A.Y alert the others “ he called before striking back as she dodge easily sending her glass hurdling towards him standing on the counter before sending him flying out the door. Just as he went to charge spears came toward him as he raised his arm the ice breaking against the vibranium of his arm. Turning only to be knocked on his ass as she straddled his stomach.
“ ok maybe she is cool “ tony walked in .
“ hey princess he’s one of us” nat rushed in pulling her off of the super soldier.
“ she's point break and reindeer games kid sister … i think she’s a kid “ tony explained.
“ y/n this is roger’s boyfriend “ clint smirked.
“ he’s not my boyfriend “ both men huffed.
“ no really how old are you kid ?” tony asked.
“ only like 80 years “ she shrugged.
“ practically a babe” loki rolled his eyes.
“ sorry for nearly stabbing you “ she winced.
“ seems like a family trait” nat snorted .
“ only thor” both she and loki said at same time.
“ So how was the mission?” steve ignored the two as he turned to his friends.
“ Well, apparently you guys gave them a scare at one of their bases and they wipe everything. Why we're home so early , did you get the hostage?” .
“ yeah she wasn’t a hostage after all , she’s our new guest “ .
“ yeah she kicked ass in there “ Peter excitedly told them .
“ come on little one back to bed “ Loki lead her out of the room .
“ the little goddess kicked your ass “ sam broke out laughing .
“ i got F.R.I.D.A.Y. to record it “ tony smirked.
“ she not staying right “ bucky grumbled.
“ i don’t so , thors gone to asgard to sort that out” steve patted his back .
“ what a strange little goddess “ bucky huffed storming off to his room .
It shouldn’t be this hard, right? It was such a simple choice. Ice cream or fruit. Ice cream or fruit. Ugh, you were going to work yourself into a panic attack over a stupid choice. “Kid, you are letting all the cold air out,” you jumped at Tony’s voice and slammed the fridge and freezer closed.
“Sorry, I was distracted,” he raised a questioning eyebrow at you as he poured himself a cup of coffee. It was well past 5 o’clock, you had no idea how he drank that and managed to sleep. Well maybe he wasn’t sleeping, that was his secret.
“What’s on your mind?” He asked.
“Nothing, it’s stupid,” you sighed. Tony leaned back on the counter and sipped his coffee.
“Try me,” you began to pick at the skin around your thumb.
“I wanted something to eat,” you explained. “But I couldn’t decide if I wanted ice cream or strawberries. The decision almost caused me to have a panic attack.” It sounded a lot stupider when you said it out loud. He was quiet and you expected him to have left.
“You know you can have both, right?” You spun around to face him.
“Both?” You questioned in disbelief. He nodded and set his coffee down.
“Sit and watch this,” you sat down and he grabbed the per-cut fruit from the fridge and the ice cream from the freezer. He scoped a few spoonfuls of ice cream in a bowl and sprinkled a few cut-up strawberries on top. “Here,” he handed you the bowl with a spoon but you refused to take it. “What?”
“I didn’t have to have both,” you said. “What if someone wanted those strawberries or that ice cream? I didn’t need both.”
“Kid,” he placed a gentle hand on your shoulder and placed the bowl in front of you. “If we run out FRIDAY will just order more. You can have anything you want as much as you want.”
“Oh,” you whispered. There was a limit to certain things in the Red Room; food that was given, free time without the cuffs, and a break from the ballet bar. Everything good was limited. “Uh, thanks, Tony. Sorry, that was so dumb.” And a little embarrassing.
“Don’t apologize,” he smiled. “If there is something specific you want let FRIDAY know or ask me, okay?” You nodded as he cleaned up the mess he made. “Enjoy!” He left you to devour your sweet treat.
*
You heard giggling as you entered the kitchen after your workout with Steve. A smoothie, a cold glass of water, and a nap was calling your name. Sitting on the island were Wanda and Yelena, hunched over a laptop and that was the source of the laughter. “What’s going on you two?” You asked, grabbing a glass of water.
“Yelena is a croissant,” Wanda said smiling. You stared at the Slovakian and your sister, mouth slightly open as you tried to process what she told you.
“I’m going to pretend I understand what that meant,” Yelena giggled and turned around the computer.
“It’s an internet quiz,” your sister said. “It will ask you a few questions and you answer at the end it will give you the type of bread you are, or dog, or cartoon character.” She explained. You tilted your head.
“Why do you want to know what type of flower you are?” You questioned, scrolling on the page to see the other quizzes. “What’s the point?” You saw Yelena roll her eyes and take the computer from you.
“There isn’t a point,” Wanda said. “It’s just a fun way to pass the time.” Fun? You weren’t allowed to have fun. There was always a mission or job that needed to be done. Fun was something you weren’t allowed to have in the Red Room.
“Can I take one?” You asked Yelena smiled, nodding her head excitedly. That was where Natasha found you, sitting between Wanda and Yelena with the computer on your lap. “I am not a red panda,” you whined. The two girls laughed at you.
“According to the internet you are,” Yelena smiled, pinching your cheek. “My big krasnaya panda (red panda).” You slapped her hand away.
“I hate you,” you deadpanned.
“There you are,” Natasha said, rounding the corner to stand in front of you. “I thought we were meeting at 3.” You frowned. You were done with your workout by noon so you could shower, eat, and maybe take a nap. Natasha wanted to meet with you because there were some Widows in Central America and the Avengers wanted to see if they could do some surveillance. You looked at the clock in the corner of the laptop. It was 3:15. Shit. You looked back at your sister, her arms were crossed and she wore a smirk on her face.
“I got distracted,” you cringed.
“They got you addicted to those dumb quizzes.”
“Hey,” Yelena said. “They aren’t dumb.” She defended. Natasha rolled her eyes.
“Are we meeting or..”
“Yup,” you put the laptop on Yelena’s lap and stood up. “That was fin. See ya guys.” You followed Natasha to the conference room. “Sorry I was late,” you said to her as you sat down in the chair. “Time got away from me.” You were never late, when you needed to be somewhere you were early. If you were late there would be horrible consequences. Natasha waved you off.
“I’m just messing with you,” she smiled, handing you a folder. “Messing around and not working all the time is good for you. We all need to do it every once in a while. It reminds us why we keep fighting.”
*
Walking by Yelena’s room, you heard a groan from the slight crack. Frowning, you gently knocked on her door. “Go away,” she groaned again. You chuckled.
“It’s me,” you opened her door. Yelena was cocooned in the blankets on her bed. “Are you okay?” She burrowed her face in her pillow, muffling the sound she let out. “Come on, sestra,” you sat down on her bed and ran her fingers through her blonde hair. She flopped on her back, pouting.
“I don’t feel good,” you placed your hand on her forehead. She wasn’t warm. “No, it’s not that type of sickness,” she huffed out a sigh. “It’s that time of the month.” Her cheeks blushed slightly. Ah, that explained her mood the past few days. You smiled.
“What do you need?”
“Can you get my heating pad?” She asked. “I think it’s in Nat’s room.” You nodded, kissing her forehead. It was a quick trip to Natasha’s room to grab the heating pad and into the kitchen for water, a Gatorade, and some chocolate. You weren’t subjected to periods but you knew people who were and what they liked. Yelena sighed when you reentered with your arms filled with goodies. You bent down to plug in the heating pad. “Ugh, I hate having a uterus,” the off-handed comment made you freeze, subconsciously moving your hand to wear you bared the mark of the Red Room’s choice. “Shit, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.” Her panic snapped you out of the fog, turned on the heating pad, and placed it on Yelena’s stomach. You sat down and cuddled up against her.
“It’s okay,” you said and handed her the chocolate bar. She unwrapped it, picking at the bar slowly. You could tell she was still upset with herself. “Yelena, I’m serious. It’s okay. You didn’t mean any harm,” she sighed. Your sister sat up and placed her hand where she saw where you rested yours. Natasha saved Yelena before the graduation ceremony. One day she could have the choice of having children.
“Do you and Carol want kids one day?” You laughed.
“Funny enough we haven’t talked about that fair into the future,” you smiled, resting your hand on top of hers. The Red Room forced all Black Widows to be sterilized upon graduation. A child of your own was the one thing worth more than the mission. It made everything easier, with undying loyalty to the cause. “Not sure if I want kids,” you told her. “I never thought I’d be given the opportunely to have them.” Yelena nodded, moving to rest her head on your stomach.
“I think you’d be a great mom,” she mumbled, closing her eyes.
“Do you think so?” You asked. She hummed in agreement. “Thank you,” you whispered. “Get some sleep.”
*
‘What the hell was the noise?” You thought as you walked out to the balcony. It sounded like a cat being murdered. The source of the sound was coming from Steve, a guitar resting on his lap. You grimaced at the note that was very out of tone. "Whatcha doing?” You asked, holding the book you were going to read behind your back. The super soldier looked at you, pausing the song he was playing.
“Trying to learn how to play the guitar,” you smiled, sitting down in the empty chair next to him.
“And how’s that going?” He sighed and set the guitar on the side table between you and him.
“Well Sam was out here with me at one point so does that answer your question.” You chuckled.
“It takes some practice,” you said, leaning back in the chair and opening the book. Steve mirrored you but with a sketchbook. “You’ll get it,” you added and you both fell into a comfortable silence. But as you read your book, you kept glancing at the guitar. It had been so long since you’d felt the strings of a guitar underneath your fingers. You enjoyed every callous you earned. Sighing, you put the book down and carefully picked up the guitar. You couldn’t help the smile that formed on your face as you tuned it and began to strum. It was a weird feeling it’s been years since you felt this level of peace. Your smile grew. The world seemed much smaller when a guitar was in your hands.
“I didn’t know you could play,” you jumped, stopping mid-song. “Sorry,” Steve chuckled. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”
“Not, it’s fine,” you ran your hand over the body of the guitar. “I was in my own little world,” you sighed. “I haven’t played since Ohio and I didn’t realize how much I missed it.” You admitted, resting your chin on the guitar.
“I could tell. I haven’t seen you smile that big before,” you felt your body warm up. Steve closed his sketchbook and stood up. “You should keep it. You’re the best person to play it.” It took a moment for your brain to register what Steve said.
“Wait,” you stood up. Steve was already at the door. “Hold on. I can’t just keep this.” It was ridiculous, a little absurd.
“Why not?” He questioned with a tilt of his head.
“Because,” you licked your lips. “Because I’ve done nothing to deserve this.” He sadly smiled at you. Did you say something wrong?
“You know you can be given a gift without having to earn it,” that couldn’t be correct. You had to earn everything. Extra portions at dinner time. A mission success meant you could get a break. “Besides, that thing has been bouncing between everyone looking for a home,” he continued. “I think you can give it one.” You stared at the guitar in your hands.
“Thank you, Steve,” he shrugged.
“You should play for all of us,” he said. “At dinner or something.” You smiled.
“I may need some practice before I start performing shows.” He chuckled.
“Well enjoy,” he left you alone. You sat back down, guitar resting on your lap. It was bittersweet holding this instrument again. You wondered what happened to the one you had back in Ohio or any of your things? Was it confiscated by SHIELD? Or local authorities? Was it donated and now someone else was learning how to play on the very same instrument you used? Sighing, you began to play again.
“So bye, bye Miss. American Pie-”
There was something off about the day. You were just off all day, having no motivation or energy to do anything. So you called it an early night and curled up underneath the covers. A gentle knock followed by the door opening caused you to sit up. It was Carol. “Hi,” she smiled. “Mind if I join you?” You shook your head and lay back down. You heard her walk over to your closet to grab some clothes she left in your room. The bed shifted as Carol climbed in. She was quick to bring you into her arms. Sighing, you felt her lips graze against your skin. Her hands traveled underneath her shirt. Any other night you would welcome her advances and where this was going to lead but you were so tired.
So when Carol turned you over on your back and covered her body with hers, you didn’t fight her. She was your girlfriend and if she was in the mood you should just let her. It wasn’t the first time and it wouldn’t be the last.
“Hey, are you okay?” Carol asked, sitting back on her heels.
“Why-why did you stop?” You asked.
“Because I asked you a question and you didn’t answer.” Oh. You must have dissociated. “Do you not want to have sex?” No. That was the word fighting to come out of your mouth but if you said no would she still want to be with you? Would she hit you like the orders and force you anyway?
“It’s fine,” you said, placing your hands on her thighs. “You are in the mood,” you sat up and put your arms around her neck. “So you can use me.” Your girlfriend stared at you as if she was trying to figure out what you said.
“Use you?” She questioned. You nodded. “I’m not going to use you like you’re some object.” You frowned and sat back. Why wasn’t she going to have sex with you? “Baby, if you don’t want to have sex at any time you can say no.” Your eyebrows scrunched together. No? You weren’t allowed to say no.
“But-but if you want to and as your girlfriend I should let you.” Carol sighed and crossed her legs on your bed. Was she upset with you?
“You have ownership of your own body. It doesn’t matter if I want to have sex, you owe me nothing. I should have asked for consent first.”
“Consent?” You said the world slowly as it felt foreign on your tongue.
“Yeah consent,” she said. “So you know how I would ask to hug you when we weren’t officially together,” you nodded. You always wondered why she did that. “I was asking for your consent to touch you. I didn’t want to assume it was okay.”
“But it is. You can touch me.” She smiled.
“Maybe on some days you don’t want me to and you can tell me no and I’ll respect that.”
“Oh,” you whispered. “You must think I’m so stupid.” You looked down at your hands. Gently, she used her pointer finger to lift your head to look at you.
“Never. The Red Room took your and your sister’s autonomy. I will help you get that back. So,” she smiled. “What do you want to do?” You sighed, biting your tongue from telling her you wanted to have sex.
“Can we cuddle? I’m exhausted.” She nodded and climbed off the bed to help you pull back the covers. Once you were under them, she lay down next to you and put her arm around you. “Thank you.”
“Of course,” you heard the smile in her voice. “Now sleep.” And you did, safely in her arms.
*
“Melina-” Natasha heard the strain in your voice as she walked by your room. You were pacing; 5 steps, turn around, and another 5 steps. “I know but if you-” you were cut off again. Natasha couldn’t hear the other end of the conversation but she could tell you weren’t agreeing with whatever was being said. “Yes, mama. I will. Talk to you soon. Bye.” You hung up and stared at your phone.
“You know,” Natasha made her presence known before you threw your phone against the wall. “I don’t think your phone deserves that.” You chuckled and sat down on the edge of the bed.
“I think Stark could cough over a few bucks to get me another one,” she hummed in agreement and entered your room.
“What’s going on with you and Melina?”
“It’s nothing,” she gave you a pointed look. You sighed. “Sometimes I feel like she doesn’t listen or even try to understand my point of view on something,” you tapped your phone against your thigh. “I was cycled through the Red Room four times before you were born,” you mimicked the older Black Widow accent so well it made Natasha smile. “And I get that it must have been so hard and painful but-”
“It’s not an excuse to invalidate what you went through,” Natasha said, finding the words for you. You looked at her, nodding your head.
“Exactly,” you looked forward again. “When she finished her work with him she got out. Things just got worse,” Natasha knew this conversation was about Melina but there was a part of her that wondered if that was directed at her too.
“It’s common for daughters to fight and not see eye to eye,” Natasha witnessed Laura and Lila go toe to toe.
“Yeah but most mother-daughter relationships weren’t created by a deep undercover Red Room mission to steal information from SHIELD aka HYDRA,” you said, resting your head on her shoulder. “I’m so glad I don’t live with them anymore,” the redhead laughed. “I’m serious. I think I’d kill Alexei by now,” Natasha smiled and took your hand in hers.
“Do you hate them?” She found herself asking. “Like do you wish they were stronger to say no to him.” You were quiet. Natasha could see your eyebrows pinched together in concentration.
“I think that resentment will always be there,” you said. “I was so angry at them when we first arrived at the Red Room.”
“Really? I had no idea,” you acted like their betrayal was something you expected. You chuckled.
“That’s because I hid it from you,” of course you did. Natasha wasn’t surprised by that. “But I thought about getting my revenge on them all the time. I thought I wanted to kill them.” You admitted.
“What changed your mind?” You sighed.
“Because they weren’t the problem. They were just part of the system that was created far before their time.”
*
“I’m not sick,” you mumbled, fighting a sneeze that was tickling your nose. Yelena and Natasha stared at each other before rolling their eyes. “I’m serious!” You pouted, sniffling slightly.
“Oh yeah?” Natasha questioned. “How come Carol told us you didn’t sleep last night because you were up coughing?”
“Traitor,” you huffed and failed to keep a straight face as one sneeze after another escaped. You groaned, a pressure building behind your eyes.
“It’s probably just a cold,” Yelena said, jumping on the table next to you. “Helen will just give you medicine and you’ll feel better in no time,” that was the problem. You hated taking anything that you were told would ‘help’. “Maybe she’ll give you a lollipop.”
“Yelena-” Before Natasha could finish her thought the door opened but instead of Helen, a man walked in. “Bruce,” your sister said. “I wasn’t aware you were back.” He gave her a small smile.
“I got back late last night. Helen got pulled away in a meeting with Steve and Tony so she asked me to help out,” he turned his attention to you. “You must be Y/n, I’ve heard a lot about you. I’m Bruce,” he approached you with his hand extended to you but you refused to take it, frozen in your spot. Could they hear your heart beating? “Would you be more comfortable with Dr. Cho?” He asked. His question snapped you out of the trance you were in.
“No,” you said. “Let’s just get this over with.”
“I’ll let you know everything I’m about to do before I do it, okay?” He could sense your hesitation. A small nod was all the consent you could give and the exam began. He listened to your lungs, asking you to breathe in and out, and took your temperature. You tried to get your body to relax but it wouldn’t. It was tense with tension every time Bruce touched you. His touch was gentle, a little hesitant but you were waiting for the shoe to drop. Soon his hands would leave bruises, would grab you, and force you down. “Looks like you have a small upper respiratory infection,” he said. “Which is odd since you were given the serum, right?” You didn’t respond “Are you under more stress or training harder?”
“I don’t think our sister knows how to relax,” Yelena mumbled and glared at her. Bruce smiled.
“Well I recommend some rest and I’ll prescribe you an antibiotic,” he wrote all this down on his tablet. “I don’t want to interfere too much but the medicine should remind the serum to do its job. Take it easy for the next few days.”
“Thanks, Bruce,” Natasha said for you. You forced a smile as the doctor left. “Want to talk about what just happened?” You sighed but a violent coughing attack ripped through you. Natasha grimaced and walked over to you, rubbing your back to soothe the cough.
“I think I’m sick,” you mumbled. Yelena laughed.
“Yeah no shit but listen to what Bruce said and you’ll be better in no time,” So, that was the problem. You refused to take the antibiotics and decided to try to sweat the infection. That was where Bruce found you, holding onto a punching bag as a violent cough left you breathless.
“Your sisters told me I could find you here,” you tensed up at the sound of his voice. Another cough caused you to sway on your feet and Bruce reached out to steady you, this time you didn’t hide your flinch. Immediately, he pulled back his hands. You slumped against the wall, rubbing your chest to ease the pain. It helped. “Do you want me to get Helen or someone you’re comfortable with?” You shook your head.
“I’m fine,” you took a sip from your water bottle. “It’s not you, it’s me.” He stared at you.
“That was the most cliche line you could have said,” he deadpanned but it made you smile. You lowered yourself onto the ground and tried to collect your thoughts. But Bruce was patient and didn’t rush you to speak. Instead, he sat down in front of you with enough space to not make you feel trapped.
“In the Red Room, we were given pills and we were to take them without question mostly by male doctors,” you explained. There was still fear whenever Helen or Melina gave you medication but it helped they were females. “Sometimes it did help, the pain or sickness went away but other times,” you dug your nails into your hand. “Other times we would black out and wake up to a man on top of us.” You swore you saw a flash of green appear on his neck but the doctor covered it up with a cough. “So it’s me, not you.” It was his turn to be quiet and analyze the information you told him.
“Natasha almost broke my arm when I tried to patch her up after a mission,” you chuckled, that sounded about right. “She wouldn’t let Yelena see me alone. I can’t begin to understand what you and your sisters went through,” he sadly said. “But I’m not going to force you to be around me. It’s a trust I’m willing to earn, on your terms, and however long it takes.”
“Thank-thank you, Dr. Banner,” he smiled and stood up.
“I’ll have Helen set up another examination,” he said. “She may prescribe you a different and stronger antibiotic,” you bite back a groan, it was your fault anyway. “Get some rest or I’ll have FRIDAY ban you from the training room. Doctor’s orders.” He joked.
“Aye, aye captain,” you gave him a mock solute. He chuckled and left you alone. With a sigh, you rested your head on the wall. The serum helped you avoid sickness and long-lasting injuries but it was a water-down version unlike what they gave to Steve and the Winter Solider. So some of the bruises and injuries from their hands would last a little longer. It was another way for all the Widows to be under their control. But you were free and safe from them and Helen and Bruce were trying to help. They wouldn’t hurt you. You kept repeating it over and over again until you believed it.
*
It was a foreign feeling as you sat on a blanket near the pound of the Avenger’s compound. Feet bear and resting on the grass. Your fingers strummed on the guitar and hummed along to the song you were playing. Peace. That was the state of mind you were feeling. It was overwhelming. It was strange. But nice. You heard footsteps approaching, but the sound didn’t stop you from playing. You felt the warm hands of your girlfriend resting on your shoulders. She squeezed them. “How are you, baby?” You smiled, looking over your shoulder.
“Good, I’m happy which is odd.” She chuckled.
“Odd? Why is it odd?” You shrugged.
“Never thought I would be happy,” she kissed the top of your head.
“You deserve all of this and more,” she promised. “Now come on, teach me how to play.” You laughed and handed her the guitar. You stood up on your knees and maneuvered her hands on the guitar. As you were explaining the different notes and chords, she was staring at you instead of the guitar.
“What are you looking at?” You giggled.
“Just the most beautiful person in the entire world,” you rolled your eyes and fought the smile that spread across your face.
“Flattery will get you nowhere Captain. Now focus.”
“Yes ma’am,” she teased and began to listen to what you were teaching her. You smiled as she played the cords with some hesitation. This was your life, your beautiful life.
Also, while writing these stories. I don't think I've written Carol asking the reader to be her girlfriend. May write a quick drabble about that.
Love triangle.
pairings: Natasha X fem reader (eventually)
Warnings: swearing.
Summary: both y/n and Natasha like bucky. Buck however doesn't love them. It's obviously a love triangle.
3rd person.
All the Avengers knew that y/n and Natasha loved bucky. Even Bucky knew. It's not like they tried to hide it. They were constantly arguing about who would get him. Eventually y/n and Natasha couldn't even do a mission together without arguing. But there was one issue neither woman picked up on. Bucky was in love with a woman known as Sarah.
Sarah was another agent who ran into Bucky while trying to find fury. They ended up talking for a bit and hit it off. The rest is history. Bucky and Sarah aren't technically a couple however they act like it. Sarah was a well known agent and had a 92% success rate. She was good at her job and Bucky admired her skill. Sarah was a kind woman. Think cinnamon bun. But a poisonous cinnamon bun. Sarah was terrifying when she needed. It was honestly funny seeing the sweet woman turn into a dangerous person whom terrified whoever. Y/n and Natasha however were completely blinded by eachother to notice Sarah though. And Bucky's affection for her.
"goddamnit y/n stop trying already. I've told you Bucky will never like you!"
Natasha screamed. It was another argument. Thankfully for the avengers they were in the training room and they could just make it soundproof so they didn't need to deal with the two avengers fighting.
"well maybe he would if you weren't always interrupting our time together!"
Y/n shouted back. Natasha scoffed.
"I'm not interrupting if I'm saving Bucky from dealing with you."
Natasha snarled right back. Y/n got dangerously angry. Natasha however being the stubborn woman she was didn't back down. Y/n was about to make another comment until Wanda intervened.
"ok girls can we stop this childish arguing please?"
Wanda asked getting inbetween y/n and Natasha incase things got violent.
"tell natasha to stop chasing my man first!"
Y/n snapped. Natasha crossed her arms and looked away.
"he's not your man."
Natasha scowled.
"not yet. Thanks to you!"
Y/n was basically about to murder Natasha now so Wanda being Wanda grabbed y/n and dragged her away.
"hey Wanda what the fuck!?"
Y/n yelled out alarmed. Wanda kept pulling y/n away.
"I'm getting you away from being beaten."
She retorted. Y/n glared at wanda.
"I could so take Natasha in a fight."
Y/n mumbled.
"sure keep telling yourself that."
Wanda said sarcastically.
"how about movie night to keep your mind off Bucky and Natasha hmm?"
"yeah ok."
Wanda grinned and took y/n to her room to put in a romcom. Y/n groaned. She hated romcoms. She put up with them for Wanda though. Y/n and Wanda were practically sisters. Y/n had helped Wanda get through Pietro's death. She had been Wanda's anchor throughout the ordeal.
"he's gonna love it!"
Y/n exclaimed. She held a love letter up. Wanda looked skeptical but didn't put y/n down. While they had watched one of Wanda's favourite romcom films y/n had gotten the 'brilliant' idea to write Bucky a love letter.
"y/n are you sure about this?"
Wanda asked. She was just trying to enjoy her Flic but y/n was distracting her by talking.
"c'mon wands he'll adore it."
Y/n giggled. Wanda sighed. There was no point in trying to stop y/n with her fanatics. She had failed that too many times and gave up.
"I'm gonna go give it to him!"
Y/n said excited getting off the bed.
"what about the movie!?"
Wanda whined.
"We'll come back to it! Promise!"
Y/n said running out of the room. Wanda watches her go. A few minutes later and y/n would come running back in or yelling would be heard. Most likely the latter.
Y/n held the letter tightly. She was excited. Then guess who moved in front of her.
"what's this miss lover girl."
Natasha said mockingly as she snatched the letter away. Y/n glared at Natasha.
"give that back. It's for Bucky not you!"
Y/n snapped. Natasha then smirked and ripped the letter in half and dropped the pieces before stomping on them.
"oopsies!"
Natasha laughed. Y/n was about to yell but she had had enough. Y/n had put too much effort into that letter and Wanda was undoubtedly gonna be upset again when she and Natasha argued only a few hours after they stopped. So being y/n she kicked Romanoff in the shin and left. Natasha was shocked at the action. Y/n and her had gotten physical before but it was after a lot of banter first. And before Wanda dragged y/n away. In all honesty Natasha enjoyed the banter with y/n. And in even more honesty Natasha was incredibly jealous of how close Wanda and y/n were. Not that Natasha would ever admit these things.
Y/n stormed back into Wanda's room. Wanda was surprised. She had expected a happy giddy y/n or yelling in the distance. Not an angry upset y/n and no yelling at all.
"what happened?"
Wanda asked concerned.
"fucking Natasha Romanoff happened. Bitch ripped up my letter."
Y/n was on the brink of tears. Wanda stood up and gave her a hug. She knew how much y/n had put into that letter. Despite her disdain with when she made it Wanda had still kept an eye on y/n whilst she made the letter.
Back with Natasha though she had grabbed the torn letter and retreated to her room. She was curious now. What was in the letter. So she opened put the torn pieces together and began to read.
'dear Bucky.
I wish you knew how much I adore you. Despite who you were before the avengers it wasn't your fault. I love who you've become and how much you've grown. Your a brilliant avenger and teammate. I know you know I love you but I want you to know the extent of that love. This letter probably won't be enough for me to tell you but it is a small portion of that love. Your absolutely amazing and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Yours truly
Y/n'
Natasha finished the letter and sat in silence. It was brilliant. And she could picture y/n making it. Her giddy smile. Her red cheeks. Her plump lips. Wait what. No. No no no. Natasha was in love with bucky. Never in a million years would she think of that about y/n.
It had been two weeks since the letter incident and everytime Natasha entered a room y/n would leave. Not that Natasha minded. Not at all. It didn't disappoint her when y/n's smile would fade and she'd leave the room. It didn't disappoint Natasha when y/n's eyes would flick in Natashas direction and harden before she left. It didn't disappoint Natasha because she didn't like you. Right?
Y/n had been avoiding Natasha for a few weeks. It hadn't hurt to see Natasha's eyes full with genuine concern when she had stormed off after the letter incident. Y/n had been mulling things over. She was in love with bucky right. But then she thought of Natasha. Natasha and her bright green eyes and gorgeous red hair. Natasha and her badass skills. No. Y/n was not in love with Natasha because she was in love with bucky. Right?
Today. Today y/n was gonna approach Bucky and outright tell him she lived him. Outright ask him to go out on a date with her. Unlucky for y/n though Natasha had similar plans.
"why are you here!?"
Y/n scowled as Natasha rounded the corner. Y/n was waiting for bucking in the common area. Natasha smirked.
"sabotaging you. Obviously. Besides might as well tell Bucky my own feelings too."
Natasha said proudly. This time y/n was gonna banter with her. She had missed it. Y/n wasn't backing down either. But only for bucky. Well maybe a bit because she missed it.
"prepared for failure then?"
Y/n said puffing out her chest to try and seem confident. Natashas eyes flicked down to her chest before they went back to her face. Y/n ignored the rush of her heart when Natasha did so.
The banter this time lasted longer than any other times.
"well considering he hasn't even shown up yet must mean he doesn't like you. I told you he adores me!"
Natasha said smirking. Y/n took in her words then straightened. She was right. Bucky should be here by now.
"wait where is Bucky?"
Y/n asked. Natasha shrugged.
"let's find him then. And confront to wich of us he'll date. Despite its obviously gonna be me."
Natasha stated as she walked past y/n. Y/n followed natasha. Now she was curious as to where Bucky was.
Y/n came to a halt behind natasha. She couldn't see anything with Natasha blocking her like this. But Natasha was stiff. She seemed shocked. So y/n pushed past her.
"move Romanoff I nee-"
Y/n was cut off as she saw the scene before her. Right there was Bucky kissing sarah. Both Natasha and y/n had seen Sarah and Bucky together before but they thought as friends. Y/n ran. She just ran. Natasha watched her go debating whether to follow and comfort her. She did.
Natasha found y/n in tears on the roof top.
"hey.."
Natasha started.
"go away. I don't want to talk to you!"
Y/n yelled through salty tears. Natasha flinched at the time but walked up to y/n and sat down next to her.
"I'm sorry."
Natasha said. Y/n glanced at Natasha to see if she was lying or not. She wasn't.
"it's ok.. I should've known."
Y/n sniffled. Natasha tilted her head confused.
"known what?"
She asked.
"that nobody will love me."
Y/n said her voice breaking. Natasha looked at her shocked. She had thought y/n was confident in the fact Bucky loved her. But this insinuated the opposite. Then Natasha thought back to their banter. Y/n had always gotten less confident the more it went on. How had she not noticed. Then Natasha looked back at y/n. She was crying. But god she looked beautiful. Natasha but her lip. That was not a thought to have about your love rival. But what if..
Y/n was surprised when Natasha followed her. Even more so when she apologised. The silence after y/n admitted she wasn't confident at all in her crush of Bucky was awkward. Infact her crush had been crashing down since y/n had thought about Natasha in a way other than hate. And now she was trying to cling into her Bucky crush but that failed and now her head was full of the redhead beside her. Y/n was brought out if her thoughts when Natasha kissed her though.
Fuck it. That's the thought process before Natasha had kissed y/n. She hadn't even meant to. Well she had but like not physically kiss her. Natasha then started to panic. What if y/n didn't like her like that. What if y/n hated her even more now!? Why had she done that. Natasha was then surprised as y/n kissed her.
Natasha kissed y/n. That was all y/n's brain had registered before y/n had kissed Natasha back. In all honesty this was way better than imagining kissing bucky. Besides is Natasha initiated it then she obviously liked y/n so at least she didn't need to worry about rejections from her.
"what..."
Natasha stumbled out.
"you kissed me first and I've been struggling to determine if I liked you or Bucky and then you kissed me and.. I'm sorry we can forget this!"
Y/n tried to explain before Natasha interupted her.
"no no it's fine. I am the same. I struggled to determine if I liked Bucky or you... I've determined its you but.. do you feel the same?"
Natasha asked nervous now. Y/n smiled.
"I do."
A smile broke out on Natasha's face at this. She then stood up and picked up y/n before kissing her.
"Great. Your now my girlfriend!"
She stated. Y/n laughed.
"not even gonna ask me first? How unprofessional."
Y/n smirked. Natasha looked y/n dead in the eye and then said.
"never. I don't need to ask. I know you reciprocate feelings and that's enough for me."
Y/n laughed again. Then she paused.
"what will the others think if our relationship?"
Natasha thought for a moment. Then a Cheshire cat smile brought up in her face.
"I've got an idea on how to tell them."
She said.
"I like the sound of that."
Y/n said copying the smile.
Everyone was in the common room. Now was the perfect time to put their plan into action. Both Natasha and y/n entered the room from different doors. The avengers glanced between them prepared for the argument about to occur. Both Natasha and y/n scowled at eachother before walking toward bucky. Bucky internally sighed preparing for the fight. Wanda was about to get up. Then y/n and natasha met in the middle of the room and looked ready to thro hands.
"Lets settle this then y/n."
Natasha snapped.
"let's."
Y/n responded matching her tone. Wanda started toward the two but then they lunged at eachother.
Screams wer heard as they though y/n and Natasha were about to kill each other until the avengers looked and saw a sight they never thought to see. Natasha and y/n kissing. To say the avengers were shocked was an understatement.
"me and y/n would like to announce we are dating!"
Natasha said proudly. Y/n grinned back and nodded.
"the fuck you guys!?"
Tony screamed.
"I thought I was gonna have a heart attack!"
Natasha laughed and then kissed y/n again. Tony screwed up his nose and turned away.
"so your both over me?"
Bucky perked up. Both women turned to him smiled and nodded. Bucky leaned back relieved.
"y/n y/l/n you are so gonna fucking pay for scaring the shit out of me like that!"
Wanda scolded.
"I'm sorry wands but this was too funny to pass up!"
Y/n giggled.
"fine then. We are watching romcoms for the next three days!"
Wanda said.
"and we are finishing the one you left mid way through! Three times! We are watching it three times."
Y/n went blank before groaning. Natasha laughed.
"aww c'mon detka it's just a few films."
Natasha laughed. Wanda turned to her.
"oh no your involved in this too so you must suffer too! Your also watching the romcoms!"
Wanda said. Natasha grained and this time y/n smirked.
"c'mon detka it's just a few films."
Y/n said copying Natashas voice earning herself an arm slap.
A/n: I hope this is ok. I feel like it's shit but y'know.
Chapter 8
Warnings: None. (Will however be a 18+ reader book)
Copyright: I do not own any Marvel characters or locations. However, I do own a few OCs like Elizabeth, Katherine, Stacy, and Jessie. I do not condone any copying of this.
"Beach wedding?" T'Challa questioned. "That sounds pleasant, although for you to become part of the Wakandan royalty through marriage, we'll have to do a separate special ceremony. It won't disrupt or affect the marriage bond though, so there's nothing to worry about with that."
The idea of being a Queen was still rather frightening to you.
"Beach wedding, beach wedding." Fury was singing underneath his breath with a slight wiggle of his hips. Well, he was extremely excited about the idea. Apparently he loved the beach so much, the ship that he was visiting with had a simulation so he could pretend he was at the beach.
Your sister bounded into the room, "You're on the news again Y/N!"
You shrunk into the couch you were sitting on. It had been six months since the incident. You had gotten comfortable with every person that you were soulmated to, along with their friends. Your own friends were absolutely enthralled with the idea. All three of them were invited to the wedding as well.
Once the news had gotten ahold that one, the Avengers were finally getting married, and two, it was to the girl in the record book who had eleven bonds, well the news had been covering it for almost three weeks now.
You had quit your job at this point. There was no reason to keep it. Tony kept everything you could possibly needed in the room and if you really, really needed something, he had a special card that you were supposed to use.
You very rarely spent the card. Even if Tony was a billionaire, you weren't entirely okay with spending his money if you really didn't need something.
Tony's voice brought you back to the conversation, "I was thinking that we could move into a large mansion instead of trying to continue to live in the Tower. Especially once we have kids. It would be easier to live in a house instead."
"I agree." Steve said with a nod.
"If it's far from civilization." Fury pointed out.
"Can we move back to the topic of those kids?" You asked.
Everyone looked at you.
"It's just. . . with the kids, are you guys going to care if like. . . you don't have one that isn't biologically yours? Or do you all want one that is yours or. . ." You asked.
"I don't care whose they are." Steve said with a shrug. "I'll raise all of them as my own."
Everyone agreed with that sentiment except for T'Challa. "I agree with that," He started, "However, the King of Wakanda still has to produce an heir. I hope you understand."
You nod. "Yes, of course."
T'Challa seemed relieved that you agreed so readily.
Preparations then moved forward for the wedding. Wanda invited her brother Pietro, since he would be consider family with the rest of us. Thor was inviting someone named 'Rocket' and his 'clan' who were called the Guardians of the Galaxy.
You met Agent Coulson, who was a very nice man. He, Fury, and Hill all did really seemed to get along well.
Loki and Thor were inviting a few people from New Asgard. (pretending they never died) Sif, Volstagg, Fandral, Hogun, Heimdall, and Valkyrie. Also someone people named Korg and Miek.
Clint was inviting his sister Laura and her soulmate and their kids. Sam invited his sister.
You were sure that there would be more than family there, but the biggest question for you was whether or not you invited your father to the ceremony.
You didn't think he'd cause any trouble, but at the same time, it had been a few years since you had last seen him.
"Let's go for a walk." Clint said enthusiastically.
You quickly leaped from the couch to take his hand, leaving the others behind, Sam and T'Challa being the only ones that went with you two.
It was a sunny day out and the three of you strolled across the well tended lawn of Avenger Tower.
"How overboard do you think Tony will go with the house?" You questioned.
Clint snickered, "You should see the house he got for him and Stephen. And that one is just for the two of them."
"I just don't like the idea of him spending to much money, you know?" You said.
"That's how Tony shows he cares. He does it in gifts." Clint explained. "He built Pepper an Iron Woman suit when her and Happy got married. He gave Nat and Bruce a house, smaller by Stephen's standards, but it's nice sized when they got married. Wanda and Vision got a flat in Paris."
You nodded, a little overwhelmed.
Sam lifted you up on his shoulders. "Anyways, I was thinking about kids."
"Me too." You said. "I'm hoping that everyone looks at them as their own."
"I'm sure we will." Clint said, sounding nonchalant about it. "After all, we're all your soulmate. After the bonding ceremony, we'll all be connected. We should expect that to be in our children too. Besides, it's not like you're going to have eleven children, even if we all wanted our own kid."
You laughed, "Yeah, eleven kids is ridiculous."
"Although, it does sound fun." T'Challa admitted. "A huge house, lots of kids running around cheerfully."
"I think at least. . . what, four or five?" Clint asked. "Maybe six. I guess it would depend on how many attempts it takes for you to get your heir."
"I do feel bad about that." T'Challa said quietly. "Unfortunately, Wakandan customs can't be avoided."
"It's alright." You said, resting your chin on the top of Sam's head. "I don't really mind. I'm actually kind've excited to start our family life together. Although the marriage bonding ceremony will probably be exhausting."
Clint chuckled, "Probably."
The marriage bonding was, well, sex. Except you had to bond with all of your soulmates in one night. Which meant eleven orgasms in one night. One from each of them, eleven from you. And you were a Virgin (as most were) so it would certainly be a no walking day the day after.
"Have you decided on whether or not you want to ask your dad to the wedding?" Sam asked up to me.
You shook your head, your chin scratching on the top of his head. "No. I mean, my sister is going to be there and that's really all the family I need. But at the same time, I don't know. Maybe he should be there. I just don't know how Y/S/N would feel about him being there either."
Once you guys had made it down to the pond, you climbed off Sam's shoulders to take off your shoes and socks to dip your feet in. Clint had already done so and Sam was getting ready.
"Scared of water kitty kat?" Sam teased as T'Challa simply stood behind you, your back against his legs.
T'Challa chuckled dangerously. "Cats eat birds little Falcon."
You giggled at their friendly bantering.
"What colour suits are you guys thinking about?" Clint asked sincerely.
"Matching our soulmate bonds." T'Challa said.
You giggled again, "Does that mean Sammy is wearing pink?"
"Oi, brown is a part of that. Pink and brown." Sam pointed out.
"Hey, you're the one that pink is your favorite colour." Clint pointed out as Sam got defensive.
"I can see it." You said, reaching over to touch Sam's shoulder. "One of those crisp pink dress shirts with a brown suit jacket and brown dress pants. Maybe even coffee brown dress shoes. You'll look rather dashing."
"Ooh, you hear that boys. I'm gonna be dashing." Sam grinned.
Clint grinned before wrapping an arm around your waist, pulling you into his side. "This is going to be fun."
***
"Y/N, this is Pietro, Pietro, this is Y/N." Tony did the very quick introduction to Wanda's brother.
He looked nothing like Wanda. His eyes were blue, his hair dark before it turned blond. It was wavy and short. He had faint stubble and a facial do like Stephen's, which showed that brown was his natural hair colour. He was a bit taller than Wanda, on the lean and muscular side.
He held his hand out, "Nice to meet you."
His voice was quiet, heavily accented with the Sokovian lilt like Wanda's.
"Likewise." You said.
"Do you have a superpower?" He questioned as the two of you dropped hands.
"She's hits peoples with umbrellas." Tony answered for you, receiving an elbow to the kidneys.
"No." You said, rolling your eyes. "Ignore him."
Pietro grinned. I spent most of the day with him, Wanda, and Clint talking. He told us about how he had met someone named Makkari and they'd had several races, though they weren't sure who was faster.
"Don't suppose you know someone with an Aqua and gold soulmate mark, would you? Or a blue and silver one? Or, this one is strange but it's yellow, red, green, blue, and black." Pietro asked.
You shook your head, "Sorry."
He shrugged, "Oh well, they're out there."
"Maybe you just need to run into the King of Wakanda and go apologize to him." Clint smirked.
You rolled your eyes. "How was I to know he was the King of Wakanda? What was the King of Wakanda even doing in a low part of New York? Not my fault I didn't do a proper apology right then and there."
"Well I'm glad you didn't." T'Challa's voice sounded behind me. He had me sit up so that he could behind me, pulling me flush against his chest. "Cause now we're here."
"Very true." You said, tilting your head back and he pecked your lips sweetly.
"Ew." Clint said like a child before winking at you. You flipped him off.
"I'm sure it's equally ew when she kisses you." T'Challa said, resting his chin on your head.
Clint smirked, "I'm excellent kisser, thank you very much."
Wanda rolled her eyes, "They are constantly comparing themselves."
Pietro shrugged, "Typical male species."
You giggled.
Later that night, dinner was a rather chaotic affair. Tony had doordashed a bunch of food from Panda Express, Larosas, Auntie Annes, Greaters, Papa Johns, and Applebees. This resulted in a large buffet of food while everyone settled in the living room with the first season of Bones on.
Loki and Coulson sat as far apart as the room allowed. Valkyrie sat with him. Fury and Maria sat with Coulson. Tony, Stephen, Rhodey, and a man named Wong were sitting around the coffee table. Steve, Bucky, Sam, Clint, Bruce, and Natasha were sitting on or against the couch. T'Challa, Shur, Okoye, and a few of the other Wakandans he had invited were sitting at the dining room table instead in the adjoining room. Thor was standing around with Volstagg, Hogun, Sif, and Fandral.
Peter was there was well, with his Aunt May, Pepper, and Happy, though only Ned could make it as MJ had some sort of job thing.
Y/S/N was there with Y/S/BF/N, though they were more out of place than the others. Vision, Wanda, and Pietro were talking to them.
And then there were Guardians. There was Peter Quil, also known as Starlord, with his soulmate Gamora and their daughter Nikki. Nebula, who scared you just a little. Drax and Mantis, who were soulmates. Rocket turned out to be a raccoon (maybe?) along with a tree named Groot. There was also a man named Kraglin who had an arrow tucked into his belt.
It was funny. Kraglin seemed almost terrified of Nebula, yet they were soulmates.
Also, it turned out that Gamora and Nebula were both the adopted daughters of Thanos so that just made them a little scarier.
Thor very happily greeted the raccoon and the tree. You could sense some sort of male prideship fight between him and Peter.
Peter Parker greeted Peter Quil. You assumed they were friends.
All in all, it was a very crowded room. And they would all be here for another two months until the wedding preparations were put into plans.
Of course, there were still some people missing according to Fury. Someone named Captain Marvel. You knew she was the one that had snapped the glove to kill Thanos.
Scott and Hope were over in California, visiting Scott's daughter Cassie.
You took your own plate, looking for a place to sit. Stephen motioned to you and you moved to sit between the space that Tony made for you between the two of them. Tony's hand immediately found it's way to your thigh while Stephen held your hand under the table.
You were so busy observing the new comers in the room, you didn't even realize that Tony had asked you a question.
"Sweetheart?" He said and you snapped your head towards him.
"Sorry, what was the question?" You asked quickly.
"Some of your favorite things to do."
"I love camping." You said immediately. "I had a friend when I was young who was in boy scouts and I went on all the camping trips with them and his family. My favorite spot was either at Mammoth Caves, Wright Patterson Airforce base, or Hueston Woods."
Tony seemed surprised, "Camping? Really?"
"Oh yeah. Now that I think about it, Mammoth caves was really my favorite. We stayed on the campground and then we got to explore the caves in tours. It was a lot of fun." You smiled as you thought about all of the memories you had.
"Caves huh?" Tony said, seeming a little pale.
"Yeah." You nodded, "There's a specific tour that we always did whenever we did. I don't remember the name off the top of my head but it took you through something called Fat Man's Misery, which was this tight spot in the cave. But it's not a good tour if you're afraid of the dark or tight spaces."
"Duly noted." Tony said.
The night passed in soft touches between the two of them, funny conversations provided by the Guardians about space, and quick bantering between Loki, Thor, T'Challa, and Sam.
Everything was really starting to feel like home.
Tony: Y/N, Peter, I’ve left a letter telling your guardians not to worry—
Y/N: They won’t.
Tony: That you’re safe—
Y/N: That’ll just depress them.
Tony: —and you’ll see them in a few weeks.
Peter: Do we have to?
The Falcon and the Owl
Pairing: Sam Wilson x Reader!Stark Word count: 2377 Summary: reader and Sam meet at the party during age of Ultron and flirt when there’s a fight Sam saves reader’s life.
I was never an official avenger thanks to my brother, Tony, I didn’t care that much after a point. I had taken an noticeable part in the SHIELD as a manager of the Stark Industries and the main graphist designer for my brother’s crazy ideas. I was a doctor in reality with love of experimenting in genetics, Nick Fury was particularly interested in my love for that subject and had me in the helicarrier many times…
Tonight though, it was a day off. It had been a hard mission for the avengers and they needed a small soiree so I contacted Maria Hill and James Rhodes and had it arranged immediately, calling the closest of the fellow heroes that saved the world last year. I was fixing the cava carefully as the guests began to arrive.
I was sitting at the top of the stairs leaned on a pillar with a glass of rum staring down at the party, I liked that everyone was having fun. I saw my brother with Thor they were speaking and giggling as Nat was serving them, there was Helen with Rhodey speaking as Banner approached Nat in the bar. Clint was with Maria and Happy laughing and drinking beers.
“How come you hosted a party Steve, didn’t know Avengers were a social club.” Sam joked, I didn’t flinch it wasn’t polite to listen to conversations you weren’t included.
“We had a tough week, so Dr. Stark made this surprise for us.” Steve approached me and turned down to me. “Why are you sitting here…?” he asked me and smiled down at me.
“I am spectating the children Steve, making sure they are having fun.” I smiled back at him. “So children… are you having fun?” I asked and turned at the two.
“Are you sure avengers ain’t a social club?” he asked and turned at me confused.
“Steve… look down there…” I pointed to the floor he looked confused and did stare at where I was showing him. “You dropped your manners, because you didn’t introduce us…” I joked and Sam laughed while Steve rolled his eyes and nudged my side. I laughed and slapped his hand, he knew I was ticklish.
“I assumed you knew him since you invited him…” Steve spoke and looked between us. Sam turned at me to see what I would reply.
“To be honest he doesn’t ring a bell.” I spoke up and looked at him. I tried to be as indifferent as I could, I do not know why…
“That’s a first, people usually remember me, especially women.” Sam responded with a smile, it was a funny smile.
“I like your confidence… but I still do not recall your name.” I reminded him, I just had the need to get over confident and self aware people a bit off their little cute castle of confidence… that’s what childhood trauma smells like, with a brilliant minded brother like Tony.
“Sam Wilson, Trauma counselor and pararescue Jumper U.S. air force… and very charmed” Sam spoke bowing lightly and looked at me with a playful gaze. I held back a chuckle, it was a natural response when people were matching my sass and weren’t awkward or scared of how I responded. Steve had left us alone and I didn’t realize when it happened.
“Nice to meet you Samuel, I am Y/N, Y/N Stark. Co- Owner Graphic Manger in Stark Industries, Neurosurgeon, Shield agent in the science department… PhD in Metropolitan college at Pathology.” I introduced myself and smiled at him cocky, he was taller than me even though I was wearing heels, for a moment I saw Tony’s gaze over at me but I turned my back.
“Ah, is that all?” Sam asked and looked at me, taking a sip from his drink.
“No there are more. I just don’t want you to feel bad.” I spoke up coldly my gaze looked at him trying to not look at him, with a polite and slightly amused smirk, he seemed to enjoy it. I was enjoying it…
“Oh do tell, Perhaps I will visit a Trauma Counselor afterwards” Sam joked back and I raised my eyebrows at his responses.
“I happen to be a Forensic Genetist from the SHIELD academy and a teacher for Russian… I also speak Italian Greek and French… and I paint in my free time.” I added and sipping my glass of wine elegantly. “I’ll cover the expenses if you are feeling overshadowed I smiled but I got serious clutching my head as I heart a high pitched frequency as if electrified cables were on contact.
“Are you alright…?” Sam asked me his hand gently touching my forearm, I turned down stairs at my brother, he looked buzzed as well but he kept talking with the people at the small lounge.
“Yes, i am but-Oh…” I spoke and looked at my original design working. “Ultron…” I murmured as the robot stumbled, Sam was dragging me slowly closer to the rest as I was staring at it, it’s a bad habit I had… it was a magical feeling see my designs alive and walking every time Tony created something I designed I was swallowed by this feeling of satisfaction, he looked good and he would look even better with the final designs and the color it would look even better than before.
“Mhm- Some dreams, gotta kill the other one-.” The robot mumbled in low volume, he grabbed his head, Sam had me moving backwards slowly. “He was a good guy…” he said and turned at us.
“You killed someone…” Steve asked, I hadn’t realized how close to the rest we were;
“How did you activate yourself- You weren’t even half built.” I asked and looked at it.
“The other guy helped me… He was a good guy.” He responded again, it was as if we had an actual conversation
“Who sent you?” Thor asked, staring at it like death, the tension in all of them was giving me the chills, even Tony seemed anxious on the matter.
“What do you plan on doing?” my voice was heard, it was a recording the robot was playing it. “I see armors all over the world” then it was my brother’s voice.
“Yltron…” Bruce realized and stared at my brother…
“In the flesh…” the robot spoke and excuse me was that sarcasm I heard in his tone, other than coldness and reality. “Well not yet… Not like that, I have some updates to perform and a new body, the one mother designed for me… Its under construction, the other guy gave me the blueprints.” He said and turned to me.
I heard clicking, agents preparing their guns… “Jarvis…” I whispered, it was the man that raised me when my parents passed away Tony was 21 and I was 14, Jarvis was our butler, he was named after him since AI Jarvis was our baby sitter.
“I am on a mission, Peace at our time.” He said and the walls of the lab behind him broke by my brother’s flying suits that started shooting at us. Sam got my waist and pulled me behind the table Steve flipped as he was swiped away.
“Stay here- you’ll be-“ Sam was to say looking down at me as I raised my dress and took out the small knife I hid to my thigh.
“I’ll be safe- I know, I didn’t mention gymnastics before huh?” I asked and raised my head from the side, he pushed me down by my shoulder as there was a shot towards me.
“You look like you don’t know it thoughj. It’s a knife Y/N how will you fight robots with that. scratch the tin cans?” he asked me infuriated by what he translated as ignorance and recklessness.
“Well, I am a scientist Wilson I know how to disable them… I only need something sharp, other than your jaw.” I said, hopefully the flirting would manipulate him into letting me do what I want. Rhodes slid down the stairs to get to us, as I waved at him. But before he could reach us a suit blasted him, “James” I exclaimed and looked at that way.
Sam turned to help him but a suit snatched him, he was trying to make it to let him be but as he mentioned this was not human, he seemed to struggle. “Y/N don’t do it” he spoke as I was already climbing up stairs to get on to higher ground and tossed my heels aside.
“Tony cable color.” I exclaimed jumping over the railings. My hands and legs hugged the back of the robot as I shoved the knife between the neck and the clavicle, it was one of the two vulnerable spots I left.
“Damn you Y/N what are you doing! Ugh… Black and white…” Tony spoke his eyes pinned on me as Maria Hill pushed him aside…
“Get off of it, I got this!” Sam groaned, still held firmly by the evil robots.
“You really don’t look like you are enjoying yourself Wilson and I intend to alter that.” I spoke, my voice heavy as was trying to find the cable my brother said, once I shoved the knife in the thin opening the armor allowed Sam to fall and smashed me to the wall- I felt the air move out of my lungs as we the hand it grasped my neck and brought me to the front. I was squirming- couldn’t breath- I saw Sam jump over it and finish my job.
I fell to the ground, as Sam landed on top of the robot, I turned over and saw Helen, hiding behind the piano and I ran towards her when a robot was right above us, I got in front of Helen- then I thought… I am unarmed, I cover her with myself when Steve came right in front of me to do the same- When the robot was to shoot Clint got the shield and tossed it to him protecting us... and then throwing it to Thor who smashed it.
“That was dramatic, I know you mean well. You just didn’t think it through…You want to protect the world but you do not want it to change…” Ultron said and I slowly stood up, I wanted to take a closer look at him, at the design at the way he was standing and functioning, he wasn’t even ready. I walked passed Steve, he didn’t seem to pay much attention to me but Sam did and held my forearm so I would stay in place. “How can you expect a world to be safe if It is not allowed to evolve.” He added and turned, his shiny blue eyes evolving around us. “There’s only one path to peace. Tony was next to me as Sam was holding me back… “The avengers extinction.” The robot growled and turned his shooters at me, I gasped and Tony dragged me behind him before, a second later, Mjonir, was smashing him into the wall…
Sam and Tony turned at me at the same time “Are you okay?” they asked all at once and looked at me concerned before turning to each other, Sam raised his brows while Tony was frowning at him. “Are you okay?” Sam ignored him looking at me. “As I mentioned I know how to take care of myself… you on the other hand need stitches.” I noticed, my throat was sore but I didn’t like looking weak. Only Tony would ever meet this side of me…
“Oh- you noticed… I knew you couldn’t take your eyes off of me.” Sam spoke and winked as he raised his sleeve gently. I iodine and took the needle on the small pair of scissors as I sat down. I was gently stitching him up.
“I can take my eyes of off you now if you want.” I smiled, my gaze was looking at him, to his wound to be precise, I felt my hands shake gently but I ignored it.
“No please.” Sam chuckled and looked at me. I didn’t avert my gaze from my motions though… “You don’t seem as confident as before… I shall remind you my trauma counselor expertise…” Sam spoke and looked at me he held my wrist as I was finishing with his stitches.
“Do not worry about my mental health… Worry about your general health in case you don’t take me out on a date…” I spoke and swallowed.
“Oh- I may be curious on what you’ll do if I don’t do so…” Sam said and approached his face towards me, we were only a breath away but I didn’t flinch. I only stared at him.
“Trust me dearest, you do not desire to witness the ruthless side of me.” I smiled and patted his cheek with my hand and turned my back to leave, but he held my wrist. I paused and didn’t look at him.
“I could call you if you give me your number” Sam spoke, his voice wasn’t funny like before.
“Look for it I do not know it.” I responded and removed my hand from his grip…
I walked further inside the lab, Dr. Banner was coming out as I walked in to see my brother looking there straight faced. His gaze blank. “Jarvis…” I whispered, it was our cute little invasion, he was making all the algorithms while I was trying to give him an appearance, I was 19 and Tony was 26…
Tony’s gaze was raised upon me, he surveyed me for two full moments before he came and pulled me in a hug. “What were you thinking jumping to that armor?” he asked me and cupped my face, he raised my chin up wards to take a look at my neck. “They left a mark…” he sighed and looked into my eyes.
I couldn’t hide from my brother no matter how hard I tried… he was always able to read me. My eyes shone as I looked up at him. I simply sobbed a bit before he pulled me in a hug. “Does it hurt?” he asked me and I nodded looking at him... He kissed my forehead…
“Hey Y/n!” Bruce waves at her over the small scattered crowd. He seems so excited to see her as if they haven’t seen each other in ages. Like they didn’t just come back from a mission they worked on, together. As if they don’t meet every other Tuesday to drink overpriced whiskey and bitch about Tony. Like they don’t have each other on speed dial.
She smiles watching him make his way over to her through the crowd, “Hiya Bruce.”
“Ah shit,” he curses under his breath as his drink sloshes, dripping a little onto his fingers. God Banner, she thinks. Hope the green guy’s not this clumsy. Licking his fingers clean, he looks up at her with a kind smile. “How—how’s it going?”
She thinks for a second or so, “Going as well as things can go once you discover the organization you were working for was secretly infiltrated by Nazis,” she takes a sip of her drink.
“Messy?”
She smiles over the rim of her glass of whiskey before agreeing, “Messy.”
Bruce nods, shifting like he’s trying to settle something in his head. “Yeah, yeah. That makes sense.” He looks around, eyes darting—nervous. Why would he be nervous? “What about—how’s the weather been lately?”
Y/n squints. “In Manhattan? You mean two blocks from where you live?”
The look on the man’s face is proof enough that he realizes he’s been caught.
“I’ve seen you butt naked like 17 times now—”
"That’s on Tony!" Bruce defends immediately. "He kept pretending the stretchable shorts were taking too long!"
She waves him off. "My point is, the time for small talk is far behind us, I can’t even see it in the rear view mirror. Can you just spit it out?”
That seems to shut Bruce up. He clams up. Scratches the back of his head.
She waits.
Until she can’t anymore. “Spit it out, Banner. Ideally before you give yourself a hernia.”
Bruce hesitates for a second before taking a step closer. He looks around in short quick motions, before he leans in and speaks just above a whisper, “I—I heard about the Steve situation…” He shrugs, she stiffens. “I just wanted to see how you were doing.”
She knew it was coming.It’s been coming at her all fucking night. First Tony and Nat, then Rhodey, Hill and Sam, then Thor, of all people—and now Bruce too? She’s beyond pissed off. "What Steve situation?" she asks, voice deceptively light.
His brows knit together as he straightens, gathering courage “The one whe—where he doesn’t wanna move in with you.” The statement comes out more as a question than an answer.
And just like that, Y/n is going to kill someone.
“Who the fuck told you that?” She damn near shouts.
Bruce instantly takes a step back. “No one.”
“Banner,” she takes a step forward. “Who the fuck told you that?”
Another step back. “No one.”
A step forward. “Banner.”
The way Bruce physically shrinks, you’d forget he moonlights as the big green raging beast.
“Will you kill the person who told me?” He asks. She knows him well enough by now to know that Bruce is weighing the danger to himself versus whoever the other person is. He’s trying to find the most peaceful way out of the situation.
“Depends on the person,” she answers diplomatically.
Bruce sighs, resigned. “Then you’ll definitely kill him.”
She takes another step forward. Her movements are too quick for Bruce to react to them, outside of his eyes widening at the realization that she’s grabbing the collar of his shirt.
“Spill it. Banner.”
Giving the answer is the only way out of this now. So it falls easily from his lips.
“Steve.”
Alright then.
Y/n is going to kill Steve Rogers.
She drops Bruce’s collar, fixes his shirt in efficient motions—because she’s not a fucking heathen.
“Thanks, Bruce.” She pecks his cheek before marching straight for the damn Golden Boy.
Steve’s not hard to spot. Not really. Not ever.
Steve Rogers is always the easiest for her to find. While her brother is prone to be found in hidden, forbidden corners, her boyfriend is the exact opposite. Where Tony demands your attention, Steve somehow just attracts it. His presence is strong and constant, and you can feel it even when you don’t see it. Sometimes Y/n thinks she can feel it from across the room on her fingertips. It always feels tangible.
It must have something to do with being the most impressive person in most rooms, especially during the war, she presumes. Back then when super people were few and far between. There was just him. The only successful super soldier. He must have walked into rooms, and respect, attention and curiosity must have followed. She is aware of the fact that Steve, the real one, the one before Captain America, wasn’t used to all the attention. Wasn’t even used to people looking his way. He’d told her on one of their countless shared sleepless nights that he’d never gotten used to the feeling of people making the way for him. He’d never gotten used to leading the way for people either but that somewhat came easier to him than the understanding that his voice carried weight. His opinions held value. His words being heard was so new to the boy from Brooklyn, he’d told her he believed he was never going to get used to it.
But Y/n didn’t believe him. Not that she thought he was lying.
No, not lying. She thinks he just hasn’t taken account of how much he’s changed since then.
Or maybe, she just views him differently because well… You know how things are when you’re in lov—attracted to someone.
You scan the room for their face the moment you walk in. No matter who you’re talking to, your focus snaps back like a cosmic magnet. When you crack a joke, your first thought is—did they laugh? Because, fuck the rest of the universe, that’s all that matters. Even when they’re across the room, lost in their own chatter, your body just knows where they are, like an invisible tether. And when they’re not even glancing your way—damn, especially then—you’re watching. Because you’re hopelessly, ridiculously, utterly hooked.
Basically what she means is that, Y/n is always watching Steve.
He seems like he’s gotten more than comfortable making his presence known.
She can see it now as she walks over to Steve as he’s talking to Hill and Rhodey. He’s smiling, the smile he smiles when he’s trying to charm the people around him. It’s different from the one she gets, that one’s shy and reserved. This one—it’s all bright and shiny, just like the Golden boy himself.
“Hey, handsome,” she calls out, sweeter than honey.
Steve’s smile switches instantly at the sound of her voice. He looks at her and she can see his eyes soften. “Hey there, doll.”
“Why the fuck are you going around telling people you don’t wanna fucking move in with me?”
His smile drops instantly.
Rhodey and Hill follow suit.
“Let’s move this somewhere private—It seems like my girl’s going to kill me,” Steve offers as an explanation before he gently grabs her hand and begins moving towards the balcony. She follows without any effort from his part. “I’d prefer it if it weren’t all that public. Wouldn’t want our lawyer going to jail,” He calls out over his shoulder as he holds the door open for her to step out.
She does.
Walking over to the railing, she exhales audibly trying to let go of the anger she’s built up over the course of the evening.
“You alright there, doll?” He asks, his tone too damn sweet.
FUCK!
Focus, Y/n!
“No. No, Steve. Quite the fucking opposite. I’m dead set on the idea of murdering you, I’m sure I can lawyer my way out of jail.” She’s… exhausted.
He finally walks up to her then. Leaning on the rails, he looks at her. “What am I being charged with, Miss Stark?”
“Defamation.”
He smiles then. Fucking charmer. “And how did I defame my girl?”
“You’re going around telling people you don’t want to live with me—which is absolutely fine, by the way. I just want to know why you won’t tell me that to my face?” She’s so curious, some might deem it as desperation.
His stance changes. He can clearly hear the vulnerability in her voice. “I didn’t say that to your face because it’s not true. I told you. I want to live in Brooklyn, and you want to live in New York. I don’t want to impose.”
“You’re at my place five nights a week, Steve. You think two more will be an imposition?”
He shakes his head, “Doll—”
She’s not in the mood for bullshit. “Steve, I will never ask you to do something that you don’t want to do. If you think moving in together would be a step we’re taking too soon, I understand that. To me life isn’t all that short as people make it out to be.” She can hear a laugh in some corner of her mind. It sounds suspiciously like Tony. “I would never mind taking things slow.”
“It’s not that, Y/n.” His head falls.
“What is it then?”
“Doll…”
The thing about their relationship is that despite all the affections the two hold for each other, it’s clear—beyond clear that both of them hold secrets they aren’t willing to throw out in the open.
She shakes her head, “Look, Steve… I—I… I understand that this is new for you. I get that. It’s new for me too. I get that it must be scary, but you have to understand that it’s terrifying for me too.”
“Oh come on, Y/n! You flirt like it’s part of your job description and you do it well enough that you should be billing me for it. What do you have to be terrified of?” Steve throws back. He says it casually, or at least tries to. But the way his eyes skirt away from hers, she knows he’s trying to hide what he really feels. However, she doesn’t like the insinuation all the same.
“What do I—Steve, do you even want this?”
He straightens at the accusation, all tall, blond and buff. “What makes you think I don’t?”
She tilts her head, takes in the sight of him. The broad shoulders, the cocked brow, the challenge in his eyes, she relishes all of it. It’s hard not to—when it’s him. When it’s Steve. “The same thing that makes you scared,” she answers him with the same resolution. She watches his brow scrunch together slightly, either at being caught or in confusion, she’s not sure. “I know… I know that we don’t talk about it, that there’s this big fat elephant in every single room we share, and we never address it. We should—we really should talk about it, but we don’t…” She clenches her jaw, gathering courage, “I’ve got a bag full of secrets and you want a peak… I can’t particularly blame you for your curiosity, but I’d rather we could just—”
“Just?”
“I just wish we could move past it,” she admits softly.
Steve inhales audibly and slowly. “It’s not that simple, Y/n.”
“It’s not that complicated either, Steve,” she tells him. “I know you don’t trust me—”
“I trust you.”
The way he says it, it compels her to look at him. And when she does, she’s struck hard by the determination in them.
“I trust you,” he reiterates, “with my life.”
“Just not with your heart.” It’s a painful admission, and just as painful an accusation. She can see the hurt in her chest reflected back in his eyes.
“That’s not fair, Y/n,” he says, voice more broken than it has any reason to be. She’s the one who should be hurt, goddamn it.
“Maybe not,” she acquiesces, “but it is true… isn’t it?”
His head falls, he crumbles. He’s ashamed, because she isn’t wrong. She hit the nail on the head, and it seems the head might have been his. She might have been aware of that while striking the hammer, but guilt blooms inside her all the same.
“Look, Y/n—it’s—” His hands run through his hair in frustration, he turns away for a second before he turns back to her. He’s trying to buy time to come up with the right words.
“Not that simple?” She guesses, laughing a hollow laugh. “Then let me simplify this for you—you don’t see a future with me.”
His face morphs instantly to annoyance, “Who told you that? I know for a fact that I never said it, so who did? Huh? Who told you that I don’t?”
“I can see it in your eyes, Rogers,” she admits, words broken, eyes wet.
“Then look again.” He’s a strong man, that Rogers. His words always carry weight, especially when he wants them too, sometimes even when he doesn’t.
“I’m looking, handsome, and all’s I see is doubt.”
His jaw clenches, his stance changes.
There’s a fight afoot.
Time for talking it out is behind them.
“Just say it, Steve.” She’s not going to like what comes next.
“I don’t know you.”
Yeah, she doesn’t just not like it, she fucking loathes this.
Steve continues, perhaps a little unaware of the damage his words must be inflicting. “I don’t know you. I—I try to look past it, I try to find some comfort in the fact that I know that you hate coffee and bubblegum, that you smoke when you’re worried, that you cry like a baby when watching movies, not because they are sad, but because they are grand. I know that you are sharing as much of yourself as you possibly can, but—” He meets her head on, like he’s going into battle. And who knows? Maybe he is.“But I also know that you wake up in the middle of the night sometimes, scared and terrified. And all I want is to pull into my arms and protect you from whatever you’re afraid of—except I have no fucking clue what that is.” He takes a step towards her, “I—I want to build a life with you, Y/n. I want a future with you.” Motherfucker. “But how the hell am I supposed to do that when I know nothing about your past.”
For anyone paying attention, her heart is breaking into a million pieces right about now.
“You don’t need to know everything about me to know me, Steve. My past—it’s fucking irrelevant.” It’s not the answer he wants, but it’s the only one she has to offer.
“I’m not asking you to tell me every sordid detail about your entire life—I’m just asking for something, anything… Throw me a fucking line, doll. I’m drowning here,” Steve pleads. He actually, well and truly pleads. He’s bordering on begging at this point. “I want this to be more—so much more, but it feels like maybe you don’t. From where I’m standing, it looks a whole lot more like you’re the one who doesn’t want this, instead of the other way round.”
Fucking hell.
Motherfucking, cocksucking hell.
Goddamnit.
She throws him the line.
“I was born in Madripoor.”
“What?” Steve asks, looking absolutely lost.
She gulps down her heart that’s beating at the speed of light and repeats herself, though this time, her voice wavers ever so slightly. “I was born in Madripoor. That’s where I’m from… or was from, before Howard Stark took me in.”
And he takes it in. He takes in this little tiny piece of information like he’s been handed the Holy Chalice. She shifts her weight from one foot to the other, suddenly feeling too exposed.
“Why do you call him Howard and not—you know—Dad?”
Her arms cross over her chest before she even realizes she’s doing it, as if her body is trying to hold itself together. She shrugs, trying for nonchalance, but it’s a little too rehearsed. “‘Cause I had a dad. And he was nothing like Howard. He was soft spoken and generous when he shouldn’t have been. He had kind eyes, calluses on his palms and he always smelled like tar.” She can’t meet his eyes when she speaks. “I’m not saying he was the exact opposite of Howard… But yeah, I guess that is what I’m saying.” She looks out over the balcony, at the seemingly endless New York skyline. She exhales sharply, her breath shaky, and grips the balcony railing. The cool metal helps ground her. “My dad was my dad. And Howie was Howie. I don’t know if that makes sense to you, and I don’t think I could explain it even if I tried to… Howard was the man who saved me, but that doesn’t mean he gets to replace my dad.”
“What…”
She can tell what he wants to ask, and she can tell he’s scared to—because he doesn’t want to push. He’s gotten a sliver and he’s afraid he’ll lose it if he asks for more.
She’s already thrown him the rope, why not give it some slack, huh?
“What happened to him?” She finishes for him, her voice sharper than before. Her eyes are avoiding looking at him like the plague, and yet, she catches him nodding in her peripheral vision.
Y/n’s grip tightens around the railing. Her shoulders lock up, and for a second, she considers not answering.
But it’s Steve—her Steve, so the words tumble out anyway. “He died—or I think he did… Madripoor is a violent place, a pirate island for all the bad guys from your rogues gallery to go and hide out in… A fight broke out between two rival factions and we got caught in the middle of it. He got me to safety, but then went back to see if he could help any other stragglers… I never saw him again.” Her throat feels tight, but she keeps her voice even. Controlled. “I was six years old.”
“And your mom?” His voice is quiet when he speaks again.
In for a penny, in for a pound.
“Dad used to talk about her like she was an angel. He told me I was two when we lost her,” she answers just as quietly.
“Does that mean…?”
“I don’t know what it means, Steve.” She kicks the ground a little frustrated, at him, but mostly at herself for being able to give out only broken bits of herself to the man she… “Maybe she died, maybe she was taken… Or maybe it means that she left us, and he just didn't know how to tell that to a little kid asking about her mom.” Her voice is sharper now, meaner, because if she doesn’t lash out, she might actually have to sit with this awful, disgusting feeling crawling under her skin. Her body feels too tight, like she’s trapped in a room with no exits. “It could mean anything.”
“Did you ever look for them?” He asks, taking a step closer to her.
Her grip on the railing tightens. “Have you ever been to Madripoor?”
“Can’t say that I have.”
“But you have heard of it?”
“Yes.”
“Anything good?”
“Not really, no,” he answers, a little defeated.
She snorts. “On average, 23 people go missing from Lowertown alone…” She waits for the fact to register with him. And then she finally turns to him and adds, “Every week.” Steve’s brows fly up in shock. Then she can’t stop herself from smirking at his surprise. “Looking for them—” she shakes her head with a broken smile. “It would be easier to find a singular bullet in a warzone.”
Something shifts between them. Something shifts in him.
“You’re gonna punch me in the face if I ask you anything else, aren’t you?” He asks, but it’s not a question, it’s a statement. She can hear his smile in his words.
Her jaw clenches, and she decides to reply anyway. “There is a distinct possibility of that happening, yes.”
She hears him chuckle softly to her right. “This is really hard for you.”
“It would be easier if I were a little less sober, but… yes. It is.” Finally, letting go of the railing, she pockets her hands. She stands taller. “However, losing you over this—losing you cause I couldn’t do one hard thing, that would be… harder.” She turns to him then, ready and strong. “I don’t think I’d survive it.”
For a second Steve doesn’t move. He doesn’t let the moment dissolve, either. “You’re not losing me, doll. You can’t.” Then, before she can react—before she can think too hard about it—he just hugs her.
She freezes. Body going stiff like she’s just been handed a live grenade.
Part of her is scared of it, part of her hasn’t readjusted to the change in the tone of the conversation. Part of her is screaming at her to put some distance between herself and the man who holds her whole heart in the palm of his hand. Because what if he decides this isn’t enough? She’s… she’s scared. So, she should pull away.
Instead, her hands fist into the back of his shirt and she holds on.
Steve Rogers is built like a damn fortress, all solid muscle and unwavering steadiness. He’s warm, too warm, like he’s been storing up all this body heat just to throw her off.
Unfair.
They stay like that, longer than she should probably allow.
Then, she hears him exhale against her hair.
“When I came out of the ocean, I didn’t think this world had anything for me.” His voice is low, warm—dangerous, in the way it makes her chest feel like it’s coming apart at the seams. “I felt out of place, out of time,” he continues, like this is just casual conversation and not the kind of thing that makes her heart kick wildly against her ribs. “I didn’t feel like I belonged here—or anywhere.” She should say something. Deflect, make a joke, give him an easy out. But all she does is breathe. “But you changed that.”
Her throat closes up.
He doesn’t move, doesn’t pull away—if anything, his arms tighten around her. “Doll, you keep me grounded.” His breath is warm against her temple, too close, too much, just enough. “You make me feel like I belong here.”
She hates this. She hates how much she doesn’t hate this.
Steve doesn’t let her slip away into her own head. Instead, he pulls back just enough to look at her—just enough to make sure she’s listening. “You think it’s a coincidence that you’re always in my line of sight in every room I walk into?” he murmurs, like he’s letting her in on a secret he’s been keeping forever.
She blinks up at him, half-annoyed, half-trapped in his gravity. “I mean, yeah? Maybe?”
He just laughs, low and disbelieving, shaking his head. “Doll, you seriously think I just happen to catch your eye from across the bar?” His fingers are still cupping her face, thumbs skimming over her cheek like she’s something fragile. Her pulse trips over itself. “You think I don’t engineer every situation to always be within your earshot?” he goes on, the absolute menace. “To listen to you laugh? To listen to you cuss with that sailor’s mouth?”
Narrowing her eyes at him, “So you’re saying you stalk me?”
Steve grins. “I prefer ‘strategically position myself in your general vicinity.’” Smooth talker. Then, softly—almost reverently—he leans in. “You’re like a hurricane, doll,” he murmurs, voice barely a whisper. “You’re the eye of the storm. I’m caught in your field, and I have no clue how to get out.”
Her fingers tighten around his forearm, her whole body thrumming with the tension between them. “Do you want to?” she asks, her voice quieter now, just for him. “Get out?”
“No, doll. No.” His nose ghosts over hers, his lips just barely grazing hers as he whispers, “I think I’d suffocate if I tried.”
She barely has time to take a breath before his lips finally, finally press against hers. And—god help her—he kisses like he means it. Like he’s been holding back for longer than he can stand. Like she’s the first breath of air after being underwater too long.
She sucks in a sharp breath, gripping the front of his shirt to keep herself grounded. But it’s useless—because everything, everything, is spinning. Or maybe she is. Maybe it’s him. Because Steve Rogers kisses like devotion—like he’s trying to tell her something with every tilt of his mouth, every slow, intentional slide of his lips against hers.
And she gets it.
She gets it in the way his hands cradle her like she’s something precious, something unshakable and breakable all at once. She gets it in the way he sighs into her, relieved, like he’s been waiting for this moment his whole damn life. Her fingers tangle into his hair, yanking him closer, and—god help him—he groans.
That sound.
That fucking sound.
It’s low and rough and wrecked, like he’s just barely keeping it together. And that? That’s her favorite thing now. So she does it again—tugs a little harder, just to hear it.
Steve grins against her mouth. “You’re a menace,” he mutters, voice warm and wrecked, kissing her deeper like it’s a challenge.
“And you’re—” she inhales sharply as his fingers slip beneath the hem of her backless dress, dragging slow and teasing along her waist.
“What was that, doll?” he asks, his lips brushing hers as he speaks. Smug bastard.
She glares at him, though it loses some weight considering she’s half-dizzy from the way he’s touching her. “I was gonna say, you’re making it real hard to think right now.”
Steve hums, lazy and pleased, his hands still mapping out every inch of skin they can reach.
She is so incredibly screwed.
“You wanna stop?” he murmurs, lips skimming down her jaw, pressing the softest kiss right below her ear.
And—oh, she fucking hates him.
Because he knows what he’s doing. Knows exactly how her breath stutters, how she grips his shirt tighter, how she’s not pushing him away. Y/n exhales shakily, tilting her head just a little to the side, just enough to let him keep going. “Did I say that?” she breathes.
His answering chuckle is low and rough, and it vibrates against her skin like a goddamn earthquake. “No, doll,” he murmurs, lips brushing right over her pulse. “No, you didn’t.”
Her fingers curl into his hair, holding him there, keeping him close.
This is dangerous.
This is everything.
And fuck if that matters.
She just wants him.
So she tugs him back up to her, kisses him hard, kisses him until he stops teasing, until he stops holding back and just—
Lets go.
And when he does?
It wrecks her.
Because Steve isn’t careful now. He isn’t measured or hesitant—he’s all in. He kisses her like he’s making up for lost time, like he’s been waiting for this since the moment he met her, and maybe he has.
“God, handsome—” she breathes against his lips, knowing full well what that nickname does to him.
It absolutely undoes him.
Steve groans again, deeper this time, and then—suddenly—her back is against the railing.
She huffs a laugh, breathless, wrecked, fingers dragging down his chest. “Oh, so now you’re impatient?”
Steve just grins, pressing another kiss to her smirking mouth. “Doll, I’m always impatient when it comes to you.”
God bless her, she is half a second away from yanking Steve right back down to her when—
A slow, sarcastic clap rings out behind them.
“Wow,” a familiar voice drawls. “This is adorable. Really. Hallmark should be taking notes. You two got the tension, the longing gazes, the obvious ‘we were just about to make questionable decisions’ body language…” He sighs dramatically. “Chef’s kiss.” He does the fucking action too, the freak.
She doesn’t even jerk away.
No, she closes her eyes. Exhales through her nose. Prays for strength. Then, slowly, very slowly, she pulls back and turns toward the absolute menace standing in the doorway.
And there he is.
Tony Stark. Billionaire. Genius. Her own personal tormentor.
He’s leaning against the doorway, drink in hand, smirking like he just walked in on the biggest scandal of the century.
“Tony.” Her voice is sweet, lethal. “We practically raised each other which means this can’t be a fault in your nurturing, so it has to be a personal failing.”
Tony places a dramatic hand over his heart. “Wow. What a way to greet your only living relative.”
Y/n tilts her head. “Oh, I’m sorry. You want a warm welcome? Here you go.” She flips him off.
Steve makes a choking sound next to her, trying—failing—not to laugh.
“Wow. Harsh.” Tony scrunches his nose in mild disappointment. “Here I am, simply looking for my beloved sister, only to find her engaging in a very public display of affection with none other than Captain America himself.” His head tilts, eyebrows waggling. “Safe to guess, you two kissed and made up?”
Y/n doesn’t miss a beat. “If I were you I’d be a lot less concerned about our relationship and a lot more worried about that balding situation you got going on.”
Tony’s eyes narrow. “Excuse me?”
“Oh, sorry, I mean the graying situation. My bad.”
Steve clears his throat, valiantly trying to fight back a grin.
Tony scoffs. “Okay, first of all, my hair is immaculate. Secondly, that was a cheap shot.”
Y/n shrugs, all innocence. “You were asking for it.”
“Asking for it—?” Tony gestures wildly. “I came out here to bring you two back into the fold, and instead, I’m being attacked.” He turns to Steve, pointing at him accusingly. “You see this? She didn’t give me nearly this much lip before you two became a thing.”
Steve, to his credit, stays neutral. “You did interrupt us, Tony.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.” Tony puts a hand to his ear. “Did you just say I interrupted something important? Well, that’s just tragic.”
She rolls her eyes and crosses her arms. “Did you need something, or did you just come out here to be an Olympic-level pain in my ass?”
Tony gasps. “Language.”
Steve raises an eyebrow. “Really?”
Tony points at him. “You don’t get to say anything, Mr. ‘Don’t-Cuss-in-Front-of-Me.’”
She tilts her head to hide her smile. “Seriously, what do you want?”
Tony takes a casual sip of his drink. “Oh, just thought I’d check in. Seeing as, you know, you made a very public proclamation of murdering the Golden Boy here,” he points to Steve with glass in hand. “People inside are wondering if our fearless leader bit the bullet at the hands of our lawyer.” He pauses there and smiles at her. “But I see you lacked the follow through.”
Y/n snorts. “Maybe I changed my mind.”
Tony clicks his tongue, provoking, “You are getting soft.”
She accepts the challenge happily. “Or maybe I’m saving my bloodthirst for the dickhead who’s cockblocking me right now?”
Tony squints. “See, that I believe.”
Steve, ever the mediator, clears his throat. “You said people were wondering where we were?”
“Oh, right.” Tony waves a vague hand. “The party’s still going, people are still drinking, and Clint is still coping with the emotional fallout of being the only guy who didn’t know about the two of you being a thing—blind idiot.” Tony rolls his eyes. “But more importantly—” He straightens, flashing his most obnoxiously confident smirk yet. “I came out here because there is, at this very moment, an ongoing bet about a very important question—” he pauses for dramatic effect, “—who is Y/n Stark’s favorite Avenger?”
Y/n blinks. “You people need day jobs.”
Tony ignores her. “Now, obviously, the answer is me.” He takes a sip of his drink, completely self-assured. “But, for some reason, some people think that might not be the case.”
Steve raises an eyebrow. “People bet on that?”
“Oh, yes.” Tony nods. “The stakes are high, Cap. Sam, Hill, Barton and Thor put down fifty on me, because, obviously, I’m the correct answer. Apart from Rhodey, the rest of them think it’s Capsicle. Which—” He throws a hand in the air, visibly disgusted. “Come on! That’s fucking delusional.”
Steve smirks. “Wow, Tony. That almost hurt.”
Tony waves him off. “Oh, don’t get sensitive on me, Spangles. You’re in second place at best. I mean, let’s be real—she’s not picking you over me.”
Humming, thinking for a long, deliberate second, she responds with, “Huh.”
Tony’s smirk widens. “Huh? Huh? That sounds like an agreement.”
She shrugs at that, noncommittal. “Sounds like a word, Tony.”
Tony narrows his eyes. “No, no, no. I don’t like that answer. I need definitive confirmation that I’m number one.”
Y/n tilts her head, smiling just enough to be dangerous. “Hate to break it to you, Stark, but if you needed confirmation… doesn’t that mean you’re not sure?”
Tony stares at her. Then blinks. Then—
“Oh, that’s dirty.”
It makes her grin, wide and proud.
Steve, who has been watching this like it’s the best show of his life, finally steps in, looking at her with a smug little smile. “You could just tell him, you know.”
She turns to him, giving him an exaggerated look. “And stroke his already overinflated ego? No chance.”
Steve chuckles, shaking his head. “You love messing with him.”
She smirks. “He makes it so easy.”
Tony throws up his hands. “Oh fuck off! It’s bullying like this that made Dad like you more.”
She makes a face. “Howard liked me more only ‘cause I was committing tax fraud for him.”
Steve chokes. “I’m sorry—what?”
Y/n waves a hand. “It’s fine. I fixed it… Mostly.” She shakes her head, “That’s not the point. Point is, don’t use your Dad as a way to get back at me. You know I hate that.”
“Only if you come back in and state for once and for all that I am indeed and in fact your favorite Avenger,” Tony throws back.
She’s caught absolutely fucking off-gard when Steve’s lips brush against her here, voice velvet smooth and painfully sensual, “No chance of it being me, doll?”
Y/n shivers before she can stop herself. Her fingers tighten in his shirt, eyes flicking up to meet his, and—damn him—he looks so unbelievably smug right now. “Wow,” she mutters, half breathless, half impressed. “Using your raw sex appeal to win a bet? That’s shameless, Rogers.”
Steve grins. “Nobody could tell it from all the bickering, but you two are inseparable—I needed an edge.” He places a soft kiss on her temple.
Tony gags loudly. “Oh my god, save it for literally anywhere else. The tension in here is gonna set off the sprinklers and ruin this killer outfit,” he says motioning to his magnificent three piece wine red suit—which she picked, B T dubs.
Fucking narsissit, she thinks to herself. “You love making everything about you.”
Tony smirks. “Well, yeah. I am your favorite.”
Y/n tilts her head. “You think you are.”
Tony narrows his eyes again. “I hate this game.”
“Yet, here you are,” she grins.
Tony exhales dramatically, throwing his hands in the air. “Fine. Fine! You win, okay?” He sighs, rubbing his temple like this is physically painful. “I love you, to the moon and back, obviously.”
She smiles.
He groans at her expression, pointing at her. “Stop looking at me like that.”
Laughing she throws back, “Like what?”
“Like I just handed you the emotional equivalent of my bank account.” He shakes his head, muttering, “Unbelievable.”
She is still smiling when Tony rolls his shoulders, stuffing his hands in his pockets. His voice softens just a fraction. “Now can you please come back inside and grab a drink with me?” He clears his throat, glancing away like this isn’t a big deal. “I have barely seen you outside of missions, and—maybe I miss you, alright?”
And with that, he turns and walks back inside.
Steve watches him go, then sighs. “We should probably head back. I feel like a jerk stealing you away from him.”
She snorts, shaking her head. “Steve, we got drunk and worked on his suit two nights ago. He just likes being dramatic.”
Steve raises an eyebrow.
“What?” She asks, confused.
“Is there anything you can’t do?”
She smiles at him, considering. “As much as I’d like to answer that question with the dirtiest, cheesiest one liners I can think of, we really should go inside—He doesn’t actually say he misses me all that often,” she reasons with him. But before she follows Tony in, she leans in close to Steve, voice soft but teasing. “This isn’t over.”
Steve grins, brushing his knuckles against hers. “Not even close.”
She smiles against his shoulder for half a second, then pulls him toward the party.
“What do you want to watch while we eat?” Y/N calls out to Derek. She’s sitting on the couch in her pajama shorts and t-shirt, TV remote in hand, scrolling through movies on the various streaming services they pay for. She’s thought about asking Tony to buy them all out and create just one platform for everything because paying for multiple subscriptions to watch her favorite shows and movies is getting old—and expensive.
“You can pick,” Derek calls back from the kitchen where he’s plating up the dinner he made for them.
“Hm, what do I want to watch,” Y/N says to herself, continuing to scroll through the movies on Netflix. “Do I want something I want to pay attention to or background noise?”
“Don’t pick anything too long,” Derek says, walking toward the couch with their plates full of food. “You might not have work tomorrow, but I’ve got two interviews in the morning.”
“Thank you,” Y/N says, grabbing her plate from him and setting it down on the coffee table. “It’s not even 7:30 yet. Do you plan on going to bed after this?”
“Who said anything about going to bed?” Derek smirks at her before taking a bite out of his food.
“Well, in that case, I might just put on an episode of something so I have enough time to shower and maybe slip on something a little sexy for you.” Y/N smirks back.
“You know you don’t have to do any of that for me. You’re sexy to me no matter what.”
“Yes, but I’m all gross from helping Steve and Bucky today. Plus, I may or may not have bought a little something to surprise you in the other day. I haven’t had time to wear it since our schedules have been so hectic.” As Y/N finishes her sentence, her phone starts to ring on the coffee table in front of her. It’s face down, but she knows it’s Stiles by the ringtone. She debates sending him to voicemail but decides to pick up her phone and answer. “Didn’t we just see each other?”
“Donovan’s gone,” Stiles’ voice rings through the speaker.
“Gone? What do you mean gone?” Derek sets his plate down on the coffee table as he listens in on the conversation.
“I mean Lydia found the transport van with dead bodies inside, but no Donovan.”
Y/N glances over at Derek, who gets off the couch and moves toward the front door to grab his keys and put his shoes on, “Where are you?” Stiles rambles off the address as Y/N slips on her shoes and follows Derek out of the loft. “We’ll be there in a few minutes.”
---
Pulling up next to Stiles’ jeep, they take in the busy crime scene. Officers are scattered throughout the area around the blocked-off road. In the back, Y/N notices the transport van in the middle of the road with the back doors open. Whether they were like that when Lydia found it or the officers opened them, she doesn’t know. Y/N and Derek run up to where Stiles and the sheriff are talking.
“What happened?” Y/N asks, looking over to the van to see if she can notice anything that will tell her what’s going on. There’s a sense in the back of her mind telling her that someone is watching her.
“Scott is out looking for Donovan. His lawyer is dead, and he also possibly mortally wounded two officers.” Her dad replies. He’s still dressed up for his date, and Y/N wonders if he was even able to make it before getting called in.
“You think Donovan did this?”
“We don’t know,” Stiles says. “I think it was someone else.”
“What’s your theor-” Y/N cuts herself when she sees someone quickly duck out of view on the street above them.
“What?” The sheriff looks over to the place she’s staring at.
“There was someone there watching us. I’m not sure what they looked like since they ducked out real quick.” Y/N stares for a moment longer before focusing back on her dad and brother. Noah motions to an officer passing by to check where Y/N was staring at.
“Anyways, as I was say-,” She’s cut off by Officer Parrish’s radio sparking to life with Scott’s muffled voice.
“Scott, is that you?” Parrish asks into his radio. Y/N, Derek, Stiles, and the sheriff walk over to Parrish and the others. Y/N now notices that Lydia, Malia, and Kira are there as well.
“Yeah, I found Donovan. He seems completely freaked out. He keeps saying the name Tracy.” Scott replies.
The sheriff grabs Parrish’s radio off the officer’s shoulder, “Tracy who?”
“Stewart,” Lydia says, “Tracy Stewart.”
“Who’s that?” Y/N asks. Lydia said the name like it was obvious, but she’s never heard that name before.
“She’s a girl that goes to our school. She said she’s been having night terrors.”
“Parrish, go find Scott, pick up Donovan, and take him back to the station. And take another officer with you.” The officer nods at the sheriff in confirmation before leaving him with the others. “The rest of you should go home. Most of you have school in the morning, and I have a few phone calls to make to some families tonight. We don’t know what happened here, but I will let you know if we do.”
“Shouldn’t we be out looking for Tracy?” Stiles asks. Lydia, Malia, and Kira are already walking back to Lydia’s car, but Stiles isn’t ready to stop for the night.
“We will look for Tracy; you will look for your bed. Go home.”
“Fine,” Stiles huffs, rolling his eyes in frustration as he walks off toward his jeep.
“Both of you too,” Noah says, looking at Y/N and Derek.
“Derek has work tomorrow, but I don’t. Call me if you need help with anything. And I mean supernatural help, not paperwork help.” Y/N says before hugging her dad goodbye.
“Should we stop and pick up some dinner on the way home?” Derek asks as they walk back to the camaro. “We didn’t have time to eat much before Stiles called.”
“Please. I’m so hungry. I only had like one bite before we left.” Y/N smiles at him sweetly while wrapping her arms around him.
“Just tell me where to go.”
---
“Thanks for coming in. We’ll let you know what we decide in a day or two.” Derek shakes the interviewee’s hand before watching the guy leave.
Cora smirks as she watches the interaction. She can tell by Derek’s body language that he doesn’t like the guy. After the guy leaves, she turns to Derek, “So, I’m guessing I shouldn’t expect to see him again?”
“For someone with ten years of experience, Issac knows more than him,” Derek says frustratedly. He was the second person to come in today, and Derek wasn’t impressed with either. The first girl was experienced but said she could only work two days a week due to her other job, and Derek needs someone full-time. The second guy’s resume looked good, but it was obvious he wasn’t as experienced as he claimed to be.
Derek wishes he could be back home with Y/N already, and it’s not even noon yet. He got to the shop early to prepare for the first interview at 8 AM and open at 7AM, but that meant leaving his beautiful girlfriend in bed by herself this morning—something she was not pleased about. He also expects to be home later than usual since four cars were dropped off this morning after their catalytic converters were stolen the night before.
“Should I print out more resumes? There has to be someone in this town who lives up to your standards.” Cora says. Derek put her in charge of going through the online applications and printing out the resumes of the people who looked qualified.
“Print them out and put them on my desk. I’ll go through them at lunch, and then you can set up an interview with the ones I give back to you.” Derek huffs. Y/N frequently tells him that he needs to stop working through lunch and use that time to take a break, which is a bit hypocritical of her as she tends to do the same. “If you see one from Bucky Barnes, make sure to print it out too.”
“Isn’t that one of the Avengers guys?”
“He’s Y/N’s uncle, and I told her I would see if he’s qualified or not. He apparently needs a job, and I was told that he might be a good fit.” He’s glad no one else is in the room with them right now. If the wrong customer were here, it would be all over the internet the next day that Bucky Barnes might work at the garage. Derek doesn’t have social media, but he hears all of the idiotic things people say online about him and the others from Y/N and his pack.
“You’ve gone soft because of her.” Cora teases.
Derek rolls his eyes, “I said I’d see if he was a good fit, not that I would hire him. I doubt he applies anyway. He doesn’t like me.”
“Well, you don’t always make the best first impression with you being all growly and broody and stuff.”
“You’ve been hanging out with Stiles too much.” Derek huffs. He moves to head back to his office when the front door opens, the bells at the top ringing in notification. Looking at the front, Bucky Barnes walks into the Hale Garage front office.
“Hi, welcome to Hale Garage. How can I help you?” Cora smiles sweetly at Bucky before turning to smirk at Derek.
Bucky slowly walks up to the front desk. His eyes are looking at everything but Cora and Derek. Getting closer to the desk, he notices the picture of Y/N he previously took off the corkboard has been replaced with a new one. The old picture is now in a frame in his and Steve’s living room. Bucky clears his throat, “Y/N told me that you’re looking for a mechanic and that I should apply…”
“Did you apply online?”
“No,” Bucky says, digging into his jacket pocket to retrieve his folded resume, “I brought my resume because I thought you might have an application here I could fill out.” Bucky fiddles nervously with the resume while waiting for Cora or Derek to say something. He hates that Steve talked him into this.
Bucky wasn’t going to apply. The more he thought about working with (for) Derek, the more he hated the idea. He decided he would rather work for Hydra than work with Derek; then Steve got into his head. Steve kept telling him how much Y/N would appreciate it if he applied and how she probably visits the shop frequently. He also brought up how Y/N just did a lot for them with their new place.
“Um, I could print one out for you to fill out. You’ll just have to give me a moment.” Cora says, glancing at Derek before moving over to the computer next to her.
Derek watches Bucky for a moment. He’s hoping his face didn’t show his surprise when Bucky said he was here to apply. He assumed Bucky wouldn’t come within 100 feet of this place.
After a few moments of silence, Derek turns his attention to Cora and says, “After he fills it out, bring him back to my office.” He walks back to his office after Cora hums in acknowledgment.
Walking into his office, Derek leaves the door open for when Cora and Bucky are finished. He sits down in the chair behind his desk and pulls out his phone to text Y/N.
Barnes is here to apply.
Really? He didn’t seem interested when I brought it up.
He brought his resume and is filling out the application right now.
I told Cora to bring him to my office when he’s done.
You’re interviewing him now?
How did the interviews go this morning?
Yeah.
They were fine but not what I’m looking for.
Maybe I should apply;)
I think work production would go down if you worked here.
Are you saying I’m a bad worker or a distraction…?
We both know you’re a distraction.
A sexy distraction;)
Derek starts to type out his reply when Cora knocks on his open door, “Hey, you told me to bring him here after he was done.”
“Yes, thank you,” Derek holds out his hand to take Bucky’s resume and application from Cora’s hand while setting his phone face down on his desk. She walks into the office, and Bucky slowly trails behind her.
Derek and Cora whisper quietly to each other as Bucky’s eyes wander around the office. For an office in an auto shop, it was fairly clean. Other than a few messy stacks of papers on the desk, the rest of the office is tidy and organized. Behind Derek was a corkboard similar to the one up front. It has a few photos of his pack members and what appears to be old family photos.
The photos that stick out to Bucky the most is the photo booth strip in the bottom right corner. The top photo is Y/N smiling at the camera while Derek is staring at her with a small smile on his face. The photo below is Y/N and Derek looking at each other with big smiles on their faces. The next photo is them passionately kissing, and the last photo is Y/N laughing while Derek’s face is blocked by the disgusted face of Stiles.
Staring at the strip of photos, Bucky can’t help but think of how happy Y/N looks in them. Her smile is brighter than anything he’s seen since they’ve re-met each other. Even her laugh in the last photo is something he hasn’t witnessed. It looks loud and carefree. He can’t help but wonder if it’s because they aren’t as close as she is to Derek and Stiles or if it’s from her memories of Hydra coming back and the new ones she gained while kidnapped.
“Take a seat,” Derek’s voice breaks Bucky from his thoughts. As he sits down in the chair in front of Derek’s desk, he realizes Cora has left and shut the door behind her.
Derek quietly reads through Bucky’s resume and application. He can tell that Bucky tailored his resume to the job opening, and on his application, he left a note stating that he’s been fixing up the bikes and cars the Avengers use for the past few years.
Bucky clears his throat and breaks the silence, “Do you have any questions?” That’s what Steve told him to ask at interviews. He can’t say it’s helped him since he has yet to be hired anywhere. He also doesn’t care if Derek has any questions. This is already humiliating enough.
“What’s one of your strengths?” Derek asks, still looking over Bucky’s resume and application.
“Um…I work quickly and can do things myself.”
“Weaknesses?”
“I’m not a people person,” Bucky answers bluntly.
“What’s the last thing you worked on?”
“I changed the oil in Steve’s car yesterday.”
“Why do you want this job?”
Bucky pauses, “What?”
“Why do you want this job?” Derek asks again, setting Bucky’s paperwork down on his desk in front of him.
Bucky thinks for a moment. How is he supposed to answer that? He can think of several reasons why he doesn’t want the job like he doesn’t want to work with or for Derek, he knows that reporters and fans like to show up, and he doesn’t want to work with or for Derek.
“Y/N told me about the job.” Bucky answers.
“I know, but why do you want it? I don’t want to hire anyone who doesn’t want to be here.”
Bucky huffs in frustration. Why can’t Derek just accept that he’s here? “I know what to do.”
“That still doesn’t answer my question,” Derek says. He knows he’s pushing Bucky’s buttons, but he wants a real answer from him. Bucky is more than qualified, and his test project will only further prove that, but he doesn’t want to hire him if he doesn’t want to be here. While he knows most people want jobs because they need money to pay their bills and feed themselves, he needs to know that Bucky is here for the job and not here to try and find more reasons to hate him and report his findings back to the others.
Bucky rolls his eyes and grumbles under his breath as he quickly stands up and moves to the door. He grabs the handle to open the door and leave but stops himself before he can open it. He takes a deep breath and takes a moment to calm himself down. Derek is only asking a simple question.
Bucky curses under his breath before letting go of the door handle and sitting back down in the chair he was previously sitting in. Taking another deep breath, he decides to answer the question honestly and bluntly, “I think working here would make Y/N happy. Do I want to work with you? No, I’d rather cut both my arms off with a small dagger, but I’d do anything for her.”
Derek stares at him for a moment, listening to his heartbeat as it stays steady. He’s hoping he doesn’t regret what he’s about to do. “What are you doing for the next hour?”
“Nothing.”
“Great, follow me,” Derek says, standing from his chair and exiting his office.
Bucky quietly follows him into the garage. He can see Derek’s uncle Peter working on a large black SUV in the middle and another kid, Isaac, if he remembers correctly, working on a small blue MINI Cooper next to Peter. He remembers Y/N said something about him finishing school online early when he was living in Paris. Now, he works here and lives in an apartment in the building Derek owns—though Y/N said that Derek doesn’t charge him for rent.
Derek stops in front of a white Kia Forte at the end of the garage. The hood is propped open, and there’s a rolling cart full of tools and more sitting next to it. Derek grabs a notebook and pencil from the cart and hands them to Bucky. “Look over the car and write down everything that’s wrong with it and how’d you fix it. The keys are on the cart. If you drive it, drive it down the block then back. Bring your notes to my office when you’re done.”
Bucky nods in acknowledgment before getting to work. The quicker he works, the quicker he can get this over with. If he gets the job, he gets the job. If he doesn’t, he’s going to kill Steve for convincing him to come here.
Derek watches Bucky for a few moments before walking away. He checks on Isaac as he walks by before walking over to their table with the work orders.
“Y/N got you hiring one of her other family members? What’s next? Is Stiles going to start working here too?” Peter asks, walking over to Derek, who is looking over the work order that’s up next.
“Y/N’s not making me do anything. She told him about the opening, and he came here on his own.” Derek replies, rolling his eyes at his uncle.
“Yeah, but I bet she put in a good word for him. He is family, after all.” Peter loves bringing up the fact that the Avengers are Y/N’s family every chance he gets. He especially loves bringing it up around Stiles. He knows it bothers him, and he loves to get under his skin.
“She told me it was up to me and to not do anything if he’s not qualified or if someone else is a better fit. Right now, he’s the most qualified person that’s applied, and everyone who has interviewed hasn’t proven to me they deserve to work here.”
“I still can’t believe the guy this morning didn’t notice that an entire headlight is missing on that piece of junk.” Peter motions his head over to the car Bucky is inspecting. “Doesn’t he hate you? Why would you want him working here?”
“I hate you, and you work here,” Derek replies.
Peter starts to reply but is cut off by Cora interrupting them, “Derek, you’ve got a phone call.”
“From who?” Derek asks.
“It’s the guy who came in last week and dropped off some old bikes. He says he found some more when clearing out his dad’s barn if you’re interested.”
“Transfer him to my phone, and I’ll talk to him,” Derek says, walking toward his office to speak to the guy in private—though working with other werewolves means there is no such thing as private conversations.
After speaking with the guy on the phone for a few minutes and working through a work order, Derek is sitting in his office eating the lunch Y/N stayed up and prepped for him while filling out paperwork.
A knock on his door has him looking up from the form he’s filling out, “Come in.”
The door slowly opens, and Bucky walks into the office. He sets the notebook and pencil in his hands down on the desk in front of Derek. He doesn’t say anything and watches as Derek picks up the notebook and looks over what he’s written down.
Derek hums in approval after he finishes reading through Bucky’s notes, “You caught everything wrong with it, and your processes are all right.”
“I would’ve finished sooner, but the kid kept asking me questions,” Bucky says. He had to ask Isaac for help so he could check the brake lights, and he ended up being stared at and asked multiple questions about what Y/N was like as a baby. He wanted to tell the kid to fuck off but decided not to in case it got back to Y/N.
“He’s not usually very chatty,” Derek says before rummaging through his bottom desk drawer. He pulls out a few papers and sets them on the desk in front of Bucky, “Fill these out and bring them with you when you start on Monday. We open at seven, but be here at least 15 minutes early for your first day.”
“You’re giving me the job?” Bucky asks incredulously.
“Yes, and you start Monday,” Derek says, picking up and holding up the paperwork for Bucky to take.
Bucky takes the papers from Derek’s hand while trying to think of what to say. There’s a devil on his shoulder telling him to throw the papers at Derek and tell him he doesn’t need the job. Then, there’s a voice in the back of his head that’s telling him to feel excited.
“See you Monday,” Bucky says before walking out of Derek’s office and speed-walking out of the building.
“Should I expect to see him again?” Cora asks with a smirk as she leans against the open door frame to Derek’s office.
“He starts Monday,” Derek replies, refocusing his attention on the paperwork he was filling out before Bucky interrupted him. He hopes that if he ignores Cora she will just go away.
“You really have gone soft. The old you wouldn’t have even given him the interview.”
“I’m not soft. He was just qualified for the job.”
“You keep telling yourself that,” Cora laughs as she walks back to the front desk.
Derek rolls his eyes at her antics before pulling out his phone to text Y/N.
Barnes starts on Monday.
Was he that good or the others that bad?
Both.
He said he applied because of you.
I hope that’s not why he got the job.
No. He’s good and has enough experience. Nothing to do with you.
Though if you wanted to thank me tonight, I wouldn’t object…
Hm…I’m sure I can think of something…
Stiles texted me and said they found the Tracy girl. They are with her at Deaton’s right now.
Are you going over?
No, they can handle it. Unless they call me, I plan on staying on the couch until you get home. Then we can move somewhere else…;)
How about we go out for dinner tonight? Somewhere nice.
Are you trying to wine and dine me? ;)
Ricci’s at 7. After we can stop for dessert wherever you’d like.
I’ll be ready!
Let’s hope nothing ruins our plans like last night.
Halloween with the starks
summary: the title explains it all 💀
Warnings:
A/N: yes, I know peter isn't a stark but I included him anyway. And also let's pretend that tony never.....waahhhhhhh-
+•°+*°•++•°+*°•++•°+*°•++•°+*°•+
You hopped out of bed, immediately running over to your closet. Tripping since you hadn't even stretched before jumping out of bed, you quickly threw on your previously hidden costume, stepping in front of the mirror to (check yourself out) see how it looks,
It was an iron man costume, with a glow up arc reactor! I sound like a little 6 y/o after getting light up shoes 💀 then you grabbed a sharpie marker (we all see where this is going) and drew on his goatee.
You stepped out of your room and walked to the kitchen, knowing your dad would be there. Expecting him to be, oh so proud 👏🥲
Your jaw dropped to the floor upon seeing him, he was wearing a skin tight, SPIDERMAN suit! You had dressed up as him and he dressed up as your brother, (lets pretend again!!)
"What the fuck?" You both asked in unison, tony scolding you for 6 minutes after that 💀
When peter heard tony scolding your dead ass, he walked into the kitchen dressed up as your superhero! You and tony had gone completely silent, staring at him blankly, you both turned to each other, and repeated the same three words that got you scolded in the first place, but no trouble this time.
"What the fuck?? So i dressed up as dad, dad dressed up as you, and you dressed up as me?"
"That only leaves mom and morgan, what if they had the same idea" peter said just as Morgan (My little angel) waked into the room dressed as you guessed it, mom.
"So we all dressed up as each other, but not, each other?" She asked after you explained it to her.
"Yeah pretty much, but that means mom is probably dressed up as you" you said booping her nose,
The only thing I wanna do in this world
Not long after you said this, pepper walked in, dressed as you again guessed it, as morga-hold on is that a banana??
For the next 10 minutes you all just stared at each other, in denial.
THE MIND IS A PRISON , I'LL BE THE KEY ( BUCKY BARNES X ODINDOTTIR!READER )
Summary : when bucky has a nightmare so bad , she ready to comfort him not expecting what will follow when she does so .
warnings : angsty as hell with a fluffy cute as hell ending , hydra sucks , idiots in love , bucky tries and fails to be a dick , reader is stubborn in the best way possible , google translated russian so please be free to correct the errors , best friends to lovers .
hope you like it @joshwashingtonmybeloved <3
This was too familiar , that cold , mold and damp smell to the almost frozen concrete feeling below . The bare dingy cell and what constituted as a mattress lay on the floor . decade in places like this was all too familiar feeling in his gut only made worse from the freedom he was getting used to . knowing what being here entailed and what would follow had his heart beating faster , it felt like its thump echoed on the walls of the cell . the tensing of his muscle awaiting for the pain that was sure to come and his mind almost scrambling to grasp every happy memory and shield it before it was taken away . eye wide watching waiting , limbs heavy refusing to move and fight his way out why wasn’t he fighting this . the screeching of the cell door opening guns locked and aimed feeling his body being dragged through the halls. like a ragdoll . the walls a faded olive or it was just the build up grime and dirts over the years . watching the rooms and sell passing , even if his eyes were closed he knew where he was going , all this place were the same , same corners , the same misery laced in the foundation and evil that seeped in it walls .
Some movement as he pushed and fought the bastard like hell feeling the sting of the tasers on his skin the way his muscle so used to the feeling till it was no use as the straps held him down the metal piercing his skin almost pulsating in his skin , the rubber in his mouth that made his stomach twist and turn the bile rise in his throat . while the devil stood over him , the cold condescending eyes that told him no matter what he’d never be free , the smile of victory on alexander pierce's face as the currents start , every zap that made his muscle contract and his body seize , the screams of pain , the screams of hope to not fall into the will of these monster muffled . those eyes of pure evil blurring , doubling and then gone as everything went black .
He thought it would be a nightmare come true , being him again but this was worse maybe what happened in wakanda that freed him could also made him be locked in his own mind , a prisoner in his own body as while he was in full control . watching what haunted his dreams in real time wanting to scream be in control and stop this all . but he wouldn’t it was like he was happy that bucky was able to see this all . The winter soldier fighting against the ones he loved the most , the people who helped in every part of him being a person again .
“ come on buck this isn’t you” steve panted dodging the incoming blows , bucky wanted to scream tell them he was trapped .. tell them he was sorry he couldn’t stop this but he was trying to gain control .
“Fight this come on i believe you can do this “ that voice , the voice of someone that truly made him feel like he mattered , deserving on love and the one he loved most in this and every universe and he knew that . one swift hit and steve was throw away and bucky felt his body move , locked in his own body and no control as the soldat zeroed in . the new target to torture him .
“ no anyone but her please i will let you do what you want please” it felt like he was screaming the words and yet his mouth didn’t move . slow deliberate steps toward his y/n odinsdottir a woman he loved in secret not willing to well this knowing she was too good for a monster like him , he was right at he could see her own eyes broken and filled with sorrow .
“надеюсь ты смотришь(I hope you’re watching ) “ his own voice and not his words as he saw his own eye going to grab her but of course his doll was a fight , strong and ready moving out of the way .
“ bucky fight this , this is not you “ god her voice was so broken kicking and punching her him away trying not to hurt him.
“ pretty one “ that voice was and wasn’t his speaking again grabbing her throat lifting her off the ground her finger scratching and scraping trying to pull his hands away , her face red .
“ t-t-this is n-n-not you “ she spluttered pulling her close her face was directly at his .
“ Это есть и так будет всегда( It is and it will always be )” * crack* everything stop and the surge of his being pushing forth slowly but surely his body was his own again a laughing in his head when he looked down . His whole world , his reason for being lifeless, cold and limp laying on the ground .
“ doll ? ..Y-y-y/n” he knelt holding her in his arms as he felt no life , no beating of her heart . it was all gone , she was gone .
The room was black when he shoot up panting and sweat pouring out his body looking around the room to see he was still in the compound. All the furniture y/n and steve helped him pick out and all the picture he pretended to be annoyed at when she made him smile or pose for . ones of him and the team along the walls he was home . then the door flew open crashing with a bang bed head and eyes dripping with concern and worry staring directly at him . she was alive it was all a bad dream or was this the dream . his confused and frankly downright terrified expression trying to decipher reality and the subconscious of his own mind . then he felt it the warm feeling of soft skin on his face , she was holding his face and talking so sweetly to him that grounding him back to earth .
“ it’s just a dream , you're safe “ the coo of her melody filled voice his his ears .
“ you broke the door again “ he could hear steve coming in now looking at scene before him.
“ stark can afford it “ was all she shot back before returning her gaze onto bucky . without warning or hesitation her pulled her to him holding her tightly and letting the warmth of her skin hit his own , her scent fill his nostrils and the beating of her heart fill his ears.
“ hey it’s ok i’m here, i’m not going anywhere “ her voice muffled and more high pitched than normal something he found adorable and sweet .
“ i’ll leave you to it “was all steve was heard saying .
“ buck ? “
“ doll i thought … i thought he got you , i got you and you were gone “ it was barely a whisper but she could hear it , she knew the moment she heard the screams what was going on and maybe she didn’t need to break the door but she need to get to him by any means necessary .
“ I'm ok, look well, actually don’t look.. I look like crap but listen, “ she smiled . “ feel” she took his hand suddenly he was afraid to touch her in case it wasn’t a dream or if he hurt her. Then she moved it to her chest where he could feel her heart beating strong and maybe a little fast but it was beating was the main thing.
All that love he felt for her , something he kept so personal even from her , she was his friend and best friend at that . He never felt he deserved anything more than that , never felt she could love him like he loved her . Yet in everything she was breaking the door and to get to him , to make sure he was ok . She was his doll , his friend and undisputedly the love of his life and that terrified him the most . every sacred thing in his life was destroyed and he couldn’t open himself to her because what would kill him more was destroying her or her being destroyed because of him .
“ penny for your thought buckaroo” she smiled ever so softly .
“ you need to leave and stay away from me “ that hurt on her face turn to a frown in a split second if he blinked he would have missed it .
“ No “ simple but to the point crossing her arms .
“ what do you mean no , leave .. get out of here “ he scoffed if he had to be a dickhead to make her safe then so be it .
“ no i’m not letting you do this asswipe” she climb over situating herself in the bed beside him throwing him off his plans to get her away . “ go” she mocked his voice. “ i know what your doing and it’s not working ok so go asleep or talk to me but i’m not leaving” that stubborn attitude , that mouth that could rival stark or give the billionaire a run for his money.
“ i’ll hurt you or they’ll hurt you to get at me “ he turned .
“ one your not going to hurt me bucky you won’t even spar with me properly “ she rolled her eyes. “ hydra can’t hurt me kinda immortal “ she winked.
“ loki died “ he shot back .
“ loki dies every wednesday and come back saturday it kinda the regular “ she shook her head .
“ i can hurt you “
“ You can’t because you won’t it’s not in you to hurt your friends bucky and if your scared of him , he is gone he can’t hurt you anymore “ .
“ what if he isn’t gone . what if he’s never gone laying dormont somewhere inside”.
“ Then I will kick his ass and wait for you to come back and we will figure away to free you but we both know he’s gone bucky “ her hand laced in his , the conviction of her words and the way he could never doubt the truth in them .
“ i don’t want to hurt you ever, “ he finally said . “ I can't lose you, of the people in my life I couldn't live again , this one i could never come back from if you were gone even more so if i was the one that made that happen … you doll, your my heart and soul and everything that great in my life i love you too much “ the word he held in so long finally coming out , almost freeing in a sense . feeling her scramble from her spot ready for her to run out the door and never speak to him again but instead she was kneeling once more in front of him. Punching his arm taking him off guard before crashing her lips with his making his brain confused , short circuiting before coming back to the moment pulling her close to him as he kissed her back with much love he kept inside for so long . every time she was close and he had to hold himself back would never be the case she was his doll and that part of him that fear hurting her slowly melted away like ice thawing with the heart of her and his own love burning brighter giving a new sense of strength .
Pulling away a pure and genuine twitch of his lips , the frown and worried expression long gone a smile was on his face.
“ i don’t care what your mind thinks if you ever try push me away after that barnes were gonna have problem “ she sighed softly laying herself on his bed pulling him down with her . another thing his dream world never recognised was her strength much enhanced like his own . he lay his head on her chest feeling her hands in his hair , nails scratching along his scalp or the the soft hum of a song he heard thor tell them it was a old lullaby their mother sang to them as kids . usually he was afraid to sleep after such a nightmare but with every second of her soft embrace and every sense softly lulled to a comfort bliss , it was the first time in a long time bucky felt himself smiling as he drifted off to a better dreamland . wasn’t long til she felt her own eyes grow heavy and the call of the dream land calling her name. A tired smile on her lips to mirror his sleep induced one before closing her eyes , an unspoken promise to keep him safe even from his own mind . His mind could be a prison and she would always be the key .
