Robert Taylor as Geoff Walters in The Newsreader’s Season One! ❤️🌟🤴🏼📰
.
.
Geoff Walters has been reading the news for News At Six since television arrived in Melbourne in 1956, as we learnt in his speech! In 1986, he was marking thirty years on air, and was significant in building the News At Six brand. Over those three decades he became a major household name, to the point he could not walk busy streets as the public love for him was so fierce. Considering that he was one of the faces to break television broadcasting into the public consciousness, it is warranted fanfare!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One newsreader from the time you could draw many similarities to Geoff from was Sir Eric Pearce. Sir Pearce was born in England in 1905, and was a broadcaster on radio. He moved to Australia in 1938, and continued his radio career until in 1956, when he joined HSV-7 Melbourne as a newsreader and game show presenter. In the late 1950s, Channel Nine offered him a position of chief newsreader, and officially retired from the newsreader position in 1978, but stayed in directorial positions behind the scenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like Geoff, the 1980s saw some health challenges for Sir Pearce. According to the New Idea from the 17/09/1988, Sir Pearce was in recovery from recent heart surgery, and like Geoff, he found the recovery process frustratingly slow. He did not like how reliant he was on others or the fact he couldn’t go to work, and the fact that regular everyday things he had been doing for years were now tiring. “I’m being bullied into a reliance on others - a situation I do not enjoy and one I hope I won’t have to endure for too much longer,” he told New Idea. At the time, he was 83 years old, quite a bit older than Geoff’s heart attack at age 60. It’s sad for Geoff when you think about it, really. His body had aged before his mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sir Pearce died in a nursing home in Malvern, Victoria in 1997, at the age of 92, going on to live for nine more years. What an incredible long life this pioneer of Australian television news had lived, and it seems such a shame that Geoff won’t quite be reaching that grand age, not from what we’ve seen in Season Three, anyway. Looks like some of us aren’t meant to be here for a long time 💔

Queen of The Ring : Get To Know The Women’s Wrestlers In The Movie
It’s March 1st which means it’s Women’s History Month and I wanted to kick it off with a special article . The movie, ‘ Queen of The Ring ’ is coming to theaters on March 7, 2025. The film is written by and directed Ash Avildsen . The plot is the story of legendary women’s wrestler , Mildred Burke , a single mother who became a pro wrestler when women’s wrestling was considered taboo in America . This article is going to tell the real story of a few of the women’s wrestlers in the movie and who is portraying them on screen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mildred Burke was born on August 5, 1915 in Coffeyville, Kansas. Before wrestling , she would drop out of school at the age of 15 years old and work as a waitress. Burke would become interested in pro wrestling when husband took her to a show. She would be pregnant with their son at the time . She would also work as stenographer before stepping into the ring . Burke would be trained by her husband and manager, Billy Wolfe , as well as fellow women’s wrestler , Cora Livingston . Wolfe didn’t want to train Burke at first , however , he ordered a male wrestler to bodyslam , thus , she reversed it and gave him a bodyslam . She would make her debut in 1935. Thus , she would defeat Clara Mortensen for the Women’s World Championship in 1937. She was the inaugural NWA Women’s World Champion ( 1950) , World Women’s Wrestling Association ( WWWA) World Heavyweight Champion (1937) . She retired in 1956 and ran an all women’s wrestling school where two of her students would be WWE Hall of Famer , The Fabulous Moolah , and Bertha Faye . Mildred Burke passed away on February 18,1989 at the age of 73. She would help introduce women’s wrestling across the world and was inducted into the Legacy Wing of the WWE Hall of Fame in 2016. Mildred Burke is portrayed by Emily Bett Rickards in ‘ Queen of The Ring ’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clara Mortensen was born on June 21, 1916 , in Sioux City, Iowa . She was born into a family where wrestling was important to them. Her father, Fred , was a wrestler in his home country of Denmark , being known as ‘ The Terrible Dane ’. He would wrestle in Oregon as he began to train Clara and her brother , Leo , to follow into the family business. Clara was introduced to tumbling at three years old before having matches against boys. Instead of getting upset about being slammed , she learned to take the bumps and to be tough. She would make her debut at the age of 9 on July 18,1925. Her opponent would be her brother , Leo. At 16 years old , she would use his signature move , the Flying Head Scissors, to defeat Barbara Ware . However , it is unknown if Ware is the wrestler Mortensen defeated. She would have huge matches against Betty Brown and Dot Lee, thus, her biggest opponent would be Mildred Burke in 1937. Clara Mortensen would continue to wrestle after having her five year winning streak snapped by Burke and retired in 1951. Mortensen passed away on November 6, 1988 at the age of 72 . Clara Mortensen is portrayed by 4x All Elite Wrestling Women’s World Champion, ‘ Timeless ’ Toni Storm , in ‘ Queen of The Ring ’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ethel Johnson , Babs Wingo, and Marva Scott were sisters who followed each other into the wrestling business . Ethel was born on May 14,1935 . Johnson began her training for pro wrestling following in her sister’s , Babs Wingo’s, footsteps as Wingo became the first Black woman to desegregate the sport of professional wrestling. Their younger sister , Marva Scott, would soon join them. Marva Scott was born on November 21, 1937. They would be trained by Mildred Burke and Billy Wolfe. She would make her debut in 1952. The sisters would work together in a tag team and Ethel would also work a singles competitor. She was known for her athleticism. Ethel would also be a tag team champion with her sister , Marva , and June Byers . She would also be a 5 time world champion . Ethel Johnson retired in 1976 and passed away on September 14, 2018 at the age of 83 from Heart Disease. She was inducted into the Legacy Wing of the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021. Marva Scott is a one time tag team champion, with her sister , Ethel , as her partner . Marva would retire in 1979. She passed away on August 15,2003 at the age of 65 from cancer . She was inducted into the Women’s Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2023. Babs Wingo passed away on November 4, 2003. Not much is known about her . Ethel Johnson is portrayed by former Smackdown Women’s Champion, two time WWE Tag Team Champion, and one time TNA Knockouts Champion, Naomi , Babs Wingo is portrayed by Damaris Lewis , and Marva Scott is portrayed by Cameren Jackson in ‘ Queen of The Ring ’. The sisters are also the topic of the documentary, ‘ Lady Wrestlers ’.

June Byers ( DeAlva Sibley ) was born on May 25,1922 ) in Houston , Texas . Her uncle worked for a local wrestling promoter and as she got older , she would go to the shows and hang around wrestlers to learn different moves if she asked them to teach her . As she was playing in the ring , she caught the eye of Billy Wolfe . She would be taken under his wing and be trained by not only him , but Mae Young. Her ring name would come from her childhood nickname , ‘ June ’ and her ex-husband’s last name , ‘ Byers ’. She would debut in 1944 and would be an enhancement talent for the champion , Mildred Burke , and Mae Young . Her first championship would come in 1952 as she and her tag team partner , Millie Stafford , would defeat Young and her partner , Ella Waldek. In 1953, Byers would win a 13 woman tournament to win the NWA Women’s Championship after Mildred Burke had to vacate the championship due to her divorce from Billy Wolfe. She would become over with the fans and make appearances on TV game shows . She would be stripped of the championship in 1956 as the Baltimore Athletic Commission heard her plans of retiring as champion. Another 13 woman tournament would take place with The Fabulous Moolah winning . However , June would come out of retirement to face Moolah for the championship, but would lose. She retired in 1964 due to being in a car accident . June Byers would pass away on July 20, 1998 at the age of 76 from Pneumonia. She was inducted into the Legacy Wing of the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017. June Byers is portrayed by former NWA World Women’s Champion, and current AEW Wrestler , Kamille.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Johnnie Mae Young was born on March 12,1923 in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. She got her start in wrestling at the age of 15 as a member of her high school wrestling team. She was the only girl on the all boys’ team. In order to make the team, she was trained by her brothers. Young would go to a professional wrestling show and challenge the champion, Mildred Burke , to a match . Therefore , she was told by the promoters that she couldn’t have a match with Burke , so she had to face Gladys Gillem. She would defeat Gillem in a shoot match , catching the eye of Billy Wolfe. Wolfe encouraged her to start training to become a wrestler. Young would be trained by Mildred Burke. She would meet long time friend and rival , The Fabulous Moolah , after leaving home to train in Charlotte, North Carolina. It is unknown when Young had her debut match as a wrestler , therefore , reports of it were in 1941 , when she was 18. Along with Mildred Burke , Mae Young would bring women’s wrestling to Canada, as they would work for promoter and Patriarch of the Hart family, Stu Hart. They would also be two of the first women to tour Japan after World War II. Young became the Inaugural NWA Florida Women’s Champion in 1951. She was also the Inaugural NWA Women’s United States Champion, winning in 1968. She would also wrestle in the Worldwide Wrestling Federation ( WWWF ) , now World Wrestling Entertainment ( WWE ) in 1969 and 1972. It is unknown if she retired around this time . In the late 1970s into the 80s, she would venture into the real estate business . She would go on to make appearances in the WWF/E in 1994 , being in the crowd at Wrestlemania X alongside The Fabulous Moolah , ‘ Classy ’ Freddie Blassie , Nikolai Volkoff, and ‘ Captain ’ Lou Albano. She would make her WWF/E debut in 1999 as a part of the company’s ‘ Attitude Era ’. She would continue to make appearances for the company alongside Moolah. Mae Young would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008 by her friend , Pat Patterson . She would make her last WWE appearance in 2013 on WWE Raw for her birthday as she was given her own custom Divas Championship belt by Triple H and Vince McMahon. Mae Young passed away on January 14, 2014 , at the age of 90 . Mae Young is portrayed by Francesca Eastwood, the daughter of legendary actor , Clint Eastwood , in ‘ Queen of The Ring ’.
My Final Thoughts;
The women featured in this article are trailblazers. Their stories are inspiring and will be amazing to see on the big screen. I had a lot of fun working on this article . I’ll probably do another article like this soon. Would you like to see it ? Let me know !
Love You All,

Just came home after watching Queen of the Ring (that wrestling biopic about Mildred Burke) and I have spoiler thoughts under the cut. I will preface idk much about this era of wrestling nor have I read the book the movie is based off, but I'm def considering reading it, learn more about it, and watch some of the matches that were in the movie. There's also gonna be inevitable comparisons to the Iron Claw bc that movie truly set the bar for amazing wrestling biopics, but it's also not really fair imo, one had far more of a budget than the other.
In general, I would rate this a 6.5-7/10 (where 5 is an average rating).
I think ultimately, Iron Claw and Queen of the Ring, while both wrestling movies, set out to do different things. The former is about the Von Erichs and the tragedy of their family. A movie about the emotion and story of the family with backdrop of wrestling that nicks some facts and historical accuracy to make a great movie. There is a very central theme and consistent tone. Queen of the Ring is more concerned about showing the history of wrestling itself but some of the character/thematic focus as a story is sacrificed, not reaching the highs it could've reached as a movie. But as a snapshot of what the wrestling world was like back then, it arguably does a better job than the Iron Claw and the matches take center fold for me.
In-ring work and how the matches were presented stood out immediately. There's a lot more of it than the Iron Claw and several pivotal moments in the movie took place in the ring, whereas the Iron Claw was a lot more precious about them because again, that movie is more concerned about it's characters and fleshing them out. The actress who played Mildred, Emily Bett Rickards, bumped her ass off all over this movie and gave a lot of great moves, I was really surprised. Ppl were hyping up Zack Efron's wrestling, but she deserves a lot of flowers too. Helps that most of the extended wrestling sections she worked with real wrestlers in Toni Storm and Kamille who did amazing jobs.
There's a lot of not so great things you can say about Kamille, but I have to give credit where it's due and her presence as an antagonist was perfect and she gets beat up if you as a fan want catharsis. A surprise for AEW fans: Kamille is in this movie more than I expected given her lack of marketing that movie on AEW, and is a lot more important to it than Toni Storm. Toni only had about a couple lines of dialogue and two matches, but Kamille had multiple matches and was in the climax/main event. I feel like if things worked out better in the ring and with Mercedes, she would've been highlighted more on AEW with Toni to promote the movie. And speaking of not so great people making cameos, Jim Cornette was there as the NWA commissioner, tho only very briefly; just a warning so you're not jumpscared when you see him. Apparently Britt Baker was in this movie, but I didn't notice her at all until I checked the cast list which is. lmao.
But yeah I think my issue with Queen of the Ring mainly lies on how overdramatic/cartoony the dialogue and acting can be at times, and the lack of dedicated focus on a central theme or taking it seriously. Weirdly enough, I love the overdramatic dialogue when the wrestlers and promotors are working you, but their attempts at making natural sounding dialogue when they're out of character falls flat at times. Some of the southern accents can be dodgy, line delivery awkward or just straight up bad. I could not take the actor who played Billy Wolfe seriously, except when the character was hammed up/was in the scheming carny promotor mode. There's a general feminist theme, but it's not really treated with nuance, which isn't to my taste; characters talking to a mirror stating they want to be role models for women or how they're the richest female athletes, felt amateurish.
It annoys me bc I see the vision: Mildred Burke having a passion for wrestling and ends up tying herself to a carny promotor in Billy Wolfe who's twice her age, marrying him to achieve her dream, though she isn't submissive and has a lot of guts and independence. She creates the image of an honorable all american woman, making ends meet as a single mother, but subverts it for being a fighter and breadwinner. Wolfe creating a women's league in a time where it's getting outlawed, but he takes women's wrestling seriously, while also manipulating and sleeping with his wrestlers, having them work matches when they shouldn't, pitting them against each other, and controlling all of Mildred's finances despite being business partners. When they divorce and create rival promotions, it becomes a huge drama and draw when there's a match booked with both promotions involved.
I think they really should've focused hard on that specific feminist/women's history aspect of the theme. They technically do, but idk, maybe they didn't go that into depth on it for me? They don't linger on the dynamic the girls have with each other, their relationships, extended scenes of them interacting, how hard they work, the struggles they faced on a systematic level, outside of the montages--and I absolutely loved the montages. The reason why all of them are there are practically because of Mildred. It also kinda felt like they were afraid to really show Billy Wolfe being an asshole; he 100% does terrible things but at the same time, I don't feel the weight of it. We actively see him hit Mildred and his son, but for some reason, I didn't feel an emotional gut punch, whereas in the Iron Claw, we don't see Frtiz smack his kids but you feel the pain of every bad advice and fuck up he makes deep in your bones. Sure, historical facts and details about Mildred's life would've been changed or left out, but I'm willing to sacrifice that to nail that aspect of the movie perfectly; kinda in a similar vein to the Iron Claw taking liberties to service the theme of family and sacrifice to nail that point. Idk I'm kinda unsure if my critique is valid bc if I have some internalized misogyny recoiling at surface level pro feminism--if it even is that at all. Lowkey overthinking/gaslighting myself
Other minor nitpicky things: some dodgy editing during sequences/montages, but I chalk it up to budget, so it's not really fair. It only stood out to me, bc the movie had several moments where the editing was phenomenal, so the times when the graphics weren't the greatest felt weird, but I get it. Kinda distracted by some of the hairstyles, soundtrack choices, and fashion looking half time period appropriate and half modern. Idk much about historical fashion, so I can't say for sure tho, but smth about it felt off to me.
While most of this write up sounds negative, I will continue to reiterate how the wrestling segments were my favorite parts, all the women looking like stars and were fierce in the ring. It still does an amazing job portraying the wrestling world of that era, backstage and performance aspects alike. There's an amazing scene where Jack Pfefer is helping Gorgeous George and Jim "the Black Panther" Mitchell with their respective promos, working on their lines and delivery, and the editing is perfect for it. It's also def inspired me to want to learn more about the era and check the book out myself; it'll prob explore more of the womens' pov that I've been craving from the movie.

i saw queen of the ring...
i can say, confidentially, that this movie made me fu*kin PROUD to be a woman!!! this movie was amazing, powerful, beautiful, emotional, and historical. the only flaw that i have is that this movie wasn't in many theatres and, if it was, it wasn't for long.
i got back into wrestling around 2023 and, after seeing this movie, it still shocks me that this history...this legendary woman...is little to not known or heard as much.
i will say, before i saw the movie, i looked up a general background on mildred burke and she was a HUGE inspiration to the women that we know, such as chyna, paved the way for the dominant women wrestlers, from wwe to aew, that we know and love, and even shared the ring with mae young.
without spoiling, i give my utmost respect to all the actresses, from emily bett rickards to a recently favorite wrestler of mine, toni storm, for playing the women who were a part of this history❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

⚠️⚠️this is my personal opinion!!! please don't attack me if you have a different take on this movie⚠️⚠️

George C. Scott in The Last Run (Richard Fleischer, 1971)
Cast: George C. Scott, Tony Musante, Trish Van Devere, Colleen Dewhurst, Aldo Sambrell. Screenplay: Alan Sharp. Cinematography: Sven Nykvist. Art direction: José María Tapiador, Roy Walker. Film editing: Russell Lloyd. Music: Jerry Goldsmith.
The Last Run begins with a love scene so intense it might have needed an intimacy coordinator if it weren't between a man and his car. The man is Harry Garmes (George C. Scott), a retired driver for the Chicago mob, now living in Portugal. The car is a souped-up BMW 503, and it's practically the last thing in the world Harry loves after his small son's death and his wife's disappearance. He does occasionally visit a friendly prostitute named Monique (Colleen Dewhurst) and he gets along with Miguel (Aldo Sambrell), who sails his fishing boat for him. Otherwise, there's not much to keep him from coming out of retirement to meet up with an escaped con, Paul Rickard (Tony Musante), and drive him across Spain to connect with some guys who say they're going to smuggle Rickard into France. Harry doesn't know that Rickard will make him stop along the way to pick up Claudie Scherrer (Trish Van Devere), but when Harry meets Claudie he doesn't much mind. Naturally, none of this goes exactly as planned. The Last Run was a critical flop when it was first released, partly because of stories about behind-the-scenes problems. The first director attached to it, John Boorman, disliked the script. So did the second one, John Huston, whose efforts to rewrite the screenplay led to conflicts with Scott. When Huston left the film, it was assigned to a journeyman director of no great distinction, Richard Fleischer, who mostly went back to Alan Sharp's original screenplay. Meanwhile, Scott, whose wife, Dewhurst, had taken the small role of Monique, began an affair with Van Devere; after filming ended, Dewhurst and Scott divorced and he married Van Devere. I think critics may have seen the film through a lens smudged with such gossip, because it's by no means a bad movie. Roger Ebert's review, for example, makes much of the fact that it could have been directed by Huston instead of Fleischer, whom Ebert calls a "prince of mediocrities." Huston, he says, "would have been incapable of [the] mawkishness" that occurs at a key moment in the final scene. But who knows for sure? I, for one, didn't find the moment Ebert singles out particularly mawkish, but rather an effective link to the film's opening scene. Ebert is right in criticizing the film's failures of tone and inconsistencies in characterization, and the ending is a bit of a muddle. Still, Scott is always fun to watch and the Spanish landscape, handsomely filmed by Sven Nykvist, making a 180 away from his work for Ingmar Bergman, is spectacular.
