Thanks to Bandcamp for the article "When Germany Surfed the New Wave" by Jim Allen. Die Doraus & Die Marinas is the least traditional sounding new wave band of the list. Listening to this was like finding a key piece to a puzzle.
I'd always wondered what influenced Krischan (founder of Frischluft! Tonträger). Previously, we posted about Susan Aviles release, but now comes an artist from Germany that probably was part of Krischan's childhood. Andreas Dorau (Berlin, Germany) started Die Doraus & Die Marinas in the early 1980s as a high school project and scored a hit with "Fred vom Jupiter". The Bandcamp page has the first album up for streaming, but I thought I'd go with the 2nd because, while it too is sold out at the source (Bureau B...I looked for copies at Tapete Records), there are reasonable copies available on Discogs.
I'll throw out a few Frischluft! Tonträger bands since it's been a while since I thrown out these comparisons - Honigritter, Foxi Euler Syndikat, and Momus. Really, just enjoy this unique sound that is on a different level from the classic German New Wave sound.

Jealous Yellow — Czech Vampires (Erste Theke Tonträger)
Jealous Yellow’s Benjamin Rea wrote Czech Vampires while holed up with COVID in a hipster neighborhood in Prague mid-tour. Imagine that, a young man alone, worried about money and how to get home, sick and hallucinating, unsupported by friends or family, putting the whole experience to music that is just as feverish, frightened and claustrophobic as the situation he found himself in.
The album hangs loosely on a conceptual framework involving illness and vampires, with voices speaking in Czech drifting through between tuneful punk songs, wavery new wave reveries and lurching, dopplering experiments in electronic sound. At its most accessible, the music sounds like early GBV (also concerned with vampires but on Titus) or the hammering, chiming post-punk anarchy of Deeper. Yet it’s always falling apart, always melting down to essentials, calling to mind the pastiche electronic, proto-hip hop of Beck’s Mellow Gold or the no wave stews of mid-period Liars.
All of which is to say, there are some damned good songs on here, however interspersed with unintelligible intervals. Take for example, “Polygraph,” which flares in buoyant melody, surging with keyboard daydreams, while punching the time with rigid bass and drums. Rea chants disconsolately, obliquely, thoughts centered (possibly?) on the mind/body problem. His lyrics are hard to parse. He likes to rhyme words with no obvious connection. “Hard to say/Either way/mouth talking/mind separate,” he muses in an opening salvo, the logic of nightmares holding his thoughts together, but barely. “Sweat Out Yr Good Clothes” is another relative banger, swaying pendulously on an iterative riff. It has the ease and flourish of 1980s New Romantic music, the trebly bass-driven agitation of Devo.
More propulsive tracks put the bass way forward, a la thunderous “Perms for Pearl” or driving “Dirty Hand.” In this latter track, deadpanned chants finish with electro-shocked yelps, slick little melody flourishes run into thumping machinery. A theatrical voice seesaws through phrases, as the keyboards cavort in somersaults. “Dirty hands, eew” says someone and the track ends just like that.
Elsewhere the crabbed claustrophobia of communicable illness comes through in all or mostly instrumental interludes. In “Baker’s Dozen,” blotty synths and altered voices runs a click track gauntlet. It’s dance-y but dissolving as you watch. The title track blasts woozy, tone-shifting synths, putting big blotches of silence between them. It lurches forwards like a horror movie monster, awkward but full of threat. A miasma of illness envelopes the cut, as Rea recounts the symptoms, “Belly sick, licked, embrace the excrement.”
Czech Vampires is absolutely not one of those albums where every track is gold. Always messy, febrile and exciting, it has its moments. These 14 songs run through disorienting landscapes and only sporadically achieve clarity. In short, there’s a lot to get through, not all of it great, but the high points make it worthwhile.

Life´s too short for weird music Tagesempfehlung 01.12.2024
Sunday Album Club:
Kelly Lee Owens / Dreamstate
Track: Time to go
Anspieltipps: Higher, Dreamstate und Time to

De Algemene Verwarring #124 - 23 December 2024
Episode one hundred and twenty-four of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, December 23, 2024, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Pictured below is the Japanese post-punk band Mizutama Shobodan. I don't know anything about that band, except that I just bought the Subnormal Girls Volume Two compilation (unofficial compilation of female fronted post-punk), and there's a track from that band on it that I really really like, so I played it on the show and probably they are worth checking out. I have also played a lot of other new music in the show, because as some of you might now, early December I was in Paris and I went record shopping in two of my all time favorite records shops: Born Bad Records and Pop Culture Shop. Besides the fact that I'm broke now, I am also really happy that I finally have copies of the Alvilda album, that Cuneiform Tabs lp, the new record of The Sheaves, and the fantastic new Warm Currency album. You can hear tracks from all those records in this episode (and no doubt you'll hear more from them in upcoming 2025 episodes). So, that's it, 2024 ends with episode 124 and as always: beneath the photo you can find the playlist for the show. Enjoy!

There was a time where all I was listening to were releases from Frischluft! Tonträger. Krischan's label combined pop with kitsch in a completely disarming and charming way.
So, last week when I saw that Krischan had bought a lot of music from French artist Olivier Rocabois (Paris, France), I gave it a listen. Disarming and charming.
This is classic cooner indie pop in the vein of David Bowie, The Divine Comedy, Matthew Edwards, Paddy Hanna and Maxwell Farrington & Le SuperHomard. There are also hints of the wonderful Ed Askew.
This looks to be self-released. The Bandcamp page gives a useful listening hint:
"The new LP The Afternoon of our Lives is clearly split in two different strokes: the A side tells the tales of a carefree, happy-go-lucky ex-party animal whose sense of wonder has remained evergreen whereas the B side is much darker and leads you through the most hazardous regions of a troubled mind: the solitary son, very superstitious and pessimistic has become a man obsessed with fetishism and nostalgia."

https://www.musikblog.de/2024/11/soapskin-torso/ „The Singer Not The Song“, heißt ein Titel der Rolling Stones von 1965. Er bezog sich zwar nicht auf Musik, doch die Wendung wurde zum geflügelten Wort, um auf besondere Cover-Versionen aufmerksam zu machen, und sie passt wie ein Schlüssel in sein Schloss beim Album „Torso“ der Österreicherin Soap&Skin. Der letzte Tonträger von Soap&Skin war […]
