No because… they really skimped out on so much characterisation in bsd. Tonan did all that against Fukuzawa because his father–whom he clearly loved–was murdered. Higuchi joined the Mafia to provide for her little sister. Kunikida cried for two hours after the Agency was reunited because he was so overcome. Again, because he loves them all. Ango visits Oda’s grave, Gide calls Akutagawa a ‘little black duckling’, Francis shows Atsushi the amount of life-support Margaret is on just to stop her dying, Akutagawa smiled at Atsushi while he was dying. Atsushi calls Akutagawa a lawnmower, Yosano also smiles when she thinks she’ll die, Ango gets teased by his bodyguards, Dazai and Fyodor throw food at each other. All of these are such humanizing tributes that flesh out everyone and give more context for how they are

i made this for like 2 of my ocs but it was asked for so here u go
also giving me morphmaker was a mistake
new mesh, under skin detail > mouth crease (converted from explorers DX
eyes move, head comes with 2 skins (normal and shiny) - piebald skin is based off a personal oc and not included
for some reason theres a stray polygon that idk where it is on the mesh in cas. but since this is a personal thing made public im not fixing it until it pisses ME off too much
full body morph for all sims teen and up, should be at the top of the list
as expected, clothing will warp with the morph and sometimes look silly
no thumbnails for either im sleepy
edits are ok dont paywall them etc etc
DL : SFS (no ads bc im allergic)

One thing I looove love love about Nikolai is how he's a genius in his own right but he doesn't flaunt it At All. Quite the opposite even. He spends most of his (known) time around Fyodor who generally considers himself to be better than most of humankind (Kolya included) and acts as such, so by doing that Nikolai's intellect is underestimated since everyone immediately tends to assume that whatever plan Nikolai may be acting on, it has to be Fyodor's, even though in truth some of them are Nikolai's own. Not to mention his unpredictability and "silliness" add several layers to this too. No one can figure him out and thus no one can ever accurately tell how smart he is o7

Do you guys think Fukuzawa actually recognised Tonan??? The Agency head, who just recieved the prize for protecting the people, straight-up murdered this Minister of Justice’s father. Does Fukuzawa know who this is? Does he put up with Tonan because it would be awkward to apologise for cutting a guy’s head off with his katana? Does Tonan know his father was a war-hawk or did he just walk in to Fukuzawa killing his dad? Tonan’s the minister of justice, is he committed to his job? has he been watching the agency and waiting to do this? How come i haven’t heard anyone in the fandom talking about this fucker?

NIKOLAI ANALYSIS!!!! also some Fyolai analysis
To talk about Nikolai, the first thing about him that should be talked about is his views on freedom
Tumblr media
What Nikolai is meant to represent is that there are no limits for humans, that humans can do anything, cruel or good things, humans can do it, what Nikolai thinks is that there is no such thing as ‘no human could be capable of killing their friend’ or that ‘no human is capable to be free’, because for Nikolai what the society thinks and puts limits to what a human can do or can’t is being in a cage. The limits being the consequences to crimes, and thoughts being what society thinks of someone, the judgement. That’s where his comparison comes from, a bird in a cage is what humans are, and a bird out of the cage is something that humans most of the times don’t dare to.
Tumblr media
(ignore the quality pls)
Even though he is drawn to justice, he still chooses to support the DOA because of the evil in it, as I said before, he wants to prove that there are no limits for humans, humans can do and are capable of making very cruel things, however most of the people don’t do that because of the fear to consequences and because of morality, being why Nikolai says that it is brainwashing, because it is imposed since someone is very young, which leads that when people are older, they have that morality, being a gray, white or even sometimes black morality, it doesn’t matter because those people still have that morality imposed by society, it is imposed by family, schools and even friends.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Nikolai says that the cage is the skull, the logic behind it is that in the skull the brain and everything else comes to work together, the brain thinks of things even though you don’t want to think that, the brain is responsible for everything in your body, and therefore the skull is the cage, the skull is a cage for everyone, and the only way that someone ends up being free is being dead, once you die you don’t have to worry about anything at all, you cant move, you cant think, you are alone once you die because once you die everything is black for you, which is equal as freedom.
His quote “we can’t leave that warm, wet hell” refers to the body and brain.
Let’s go now to the second topic and how it is very related to the first one.
Tumblr media
This may seem like it is not related to freedom, however for Nikolai, freedom truly is when you don’t have to think about morality, when you don’t have feelings attached to morality, when you don’t have anything attached to morality, that’s truly freedom for him, however how is it related to losing yourself? Nikolai doesn’t want to be limited to what society thinks, however he is, he isn’t free yet and he cant be totally free when he is alive, that’s why he opposes to God as a scream to be free and fights to lose himself, he doesn’t want to be limited by his personality and become predictable, what Nikolai wishes is to not be able to feel guilty at all, that’s part of the freedom he wants and considers, he wants to be able to have different thoughts, commit crimes and do things considered as unthinkable by society without being able to feel guilt.
Tumblr media
It’s more than obvious that he wishes to not be aware of the cage he is in, birds die not knowing the freedom they could have had, not knowing that they are prisoners living in a cage; that’s what he wishes and why he is jealous of Tonan, Tonan is not aware that he is in a cage, he would die not knowing that he is a prisoner, dying happily inside of the cage, never being free at all.
Let’s go to his other philosophical way to think.
What do I think his philosophical way to think is? Absurdist.
The best way to be free would be dying, committing suicide, however Albert Camus thought that the act of escaping our lives does not counter the absurd and rather in the act of ending our lives, our lives become only more absurd, how does this connect to Nikolai’s mentality?
Nikolai knows that ending our lives would be the most easy way to be free, however it would also not prove what he wants to prove, becoming the act of suicide a absurd thing, which is why he ends up not dying, the plan was for him to really be killed, however he escapes to prove what he wants, that a human can do ‘unthinkable’ things to become free, that a human can do anything, there is no limit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s go now to his relationship with Fyodor because it is very mischaracterized, the topics about fyolai will be; Nikolai’s obsession and wish to kill Fyodor, how Fyodor does NOT care for Nikolai and doesn’t see him as an equal.
Tumblr media
His obsession with Fyodor comes from feeling misunderstood, then he meets Fyodor and Fyodor is the first person to understand him, then, Nikolai comes to a realization, that if he wants to be truly free he has to kill Fyodor. To show what humans are capable of, to try to not feel so guilty when killing, to be free and fight what society thinks and imposes. A common thing I’ve seen is that a lot of people think that he wants to be free from all emotions, but I don’t think so, I think that he only wants to be free from guilt, from morals and from society itself. About Fyodor, Fyodor understands Nikolai because he is very smart and analyses people very good, however he doesn’t see Nikolai as his equal, his only ‘equal’ is that man and Dazai, and Dazai isn’t totally his equal since Dazai could be very much said that he is an atheist and an ability user.
Tumblr media
The chapter 111.5 was truly a very good show of how Fyodor does not care for Nikolai, even BEFORE this chapter got out it was OBVIOUS that he didn’t care about Nikolai, he uses them for his own benefit, as a matter of fact he doesn’t even trust Nikolai, I don’t blame him because how are you going to trust them if they tried to kill you, however the most easy way for Fyodor to get out of Meursault would have been asking Nikolai to bring him back to Yokohama or wherever he wanted to go next instead of going to the helicopter with a vampire driving. Show that Fyodor doesn’t care about Nikolai is the disinterest he shows to Nikolai, he seems disinterested and is only interested when Dazai could die too, Nikolai seems very happy however Fyodor doesn’t even look interested, in the chapter 111.5 Nikolai seems sad at Fyodor wanting to kill him too, and I don’t blame them either since Fyodor was the first person to them to understand them, and Nikolai seemed very excited to see Fyodor again, and its just sad Fyodor’s reaction because it is totally disinterested.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fyodor doesn’t see Nikolai as an equal despite what a lot of people think, Fyodor sees God as his superior, then he is below God as he is God-sent, and the only equals he has or had was that man mentioned and Dazai. Dazai despite probably being an atheist and also being a ability user, he is on the same level of intelligence as Fyodor, they are both very similar despite that, and therefore Fyodor considers him as an equal but not God-sent. Then, there are sinners, which are people without an ability and are below Fyodor, then finally there are the worst kind of people for Fyodor, which are even more sinners that the people without the ability which are the ability users, and therefore he doesn’t consider Nikolai as his equal, remember that someone ‘worthy’ doesn’t instantly mean equal, and I don’t even think Fyodor sees Nikolai as a worthy ‘opponent’, I genuinely think that Fyodor sees Nikolas only as an opponent, though not worthy enough to be an equal.

Throughout the night, music and chatter filled the hall. The familiar face of Gaston Leroux stands against the wall, a glass of champagne in hand, he was going his best to keep his eye on Ayatsuji, members of the Hunting Dogs, and other government workers, if any of them interfered with the plan it could be all over. His eyes also kept darting to the door, keeping an eye on who came in and left, making sure none of them would cause a problem either.  Then his eyes fell on a familiar man, through not many would recognize him with the masquerade theme of the night, it was Mr. Tonan’s assistant. He was leaving the room but Gaston spotted Mr. Tonan talking to Victor not a moment ago. Without a word to any other society members Gaston activated his ability and stepped through the wall, disappearing from everyone’s sight. Gaston walked out into the hallway, keeping his ability activated to keep his foot falls non existent. He silently followed the man, upstairs, into another meeting hall, one that would be used for the auction that would be held tonight. Gaston hid himself behind a long window curtain, watching. The assistant went over to the table of cases, full of items for tonight’s auction, he was trying to tamper with the lots. Gaston  stepped out from behind the curtain and deactivated his ability so that when his heels hit the floor it made a sharp clicking sound, getting the assistant’s attention.
“Did you get lost? I believe the party is downstairs.” Gaston said, looking the man over with a polite smile, but one that quickly fell when the man didn’t say anything. “Or perhaps you meant to come here?”
At that the man slowly turned to look at the composer and that wicked grin came across his face that gave even Gaston chills. Then Gaston gained notice of his eyes, green and blue, they weren’t that way before. Then the scar over his eye, that also wasn’t there before. Then it was the hair, black to white, then the clothes to that of clown’s, and a card coming to cover his eye, but what stayed the same was that horrifying smile. It was an ability that was changing him of that there wasn’t a doubt, a teleportation ability perhaps?
Then he felt it, behind his head… the barrel of a gun…
That’s when he knew…
“Nikolai Gogol, I’ve heard of you, didn’t I think I’d meet you in person ever.” Gaston said, staying calm despite the gun on his head. “And what would a criminally insane or perhaps just an insane criminal want here? This auction doesn’t seem like your style not to mention this is far from Europe and your home ground.”
“Let me answer your question with another question.” Nikolai replied as Gaston felt the gun move down onto his neck. “What is Fyodor doing here?”
The composer’s eyes widened at the mention of the name, he was so much in shock that he would have stepped back if it wasn’t for the gun behind him.
“What?”
“Don’t worry he’s not actually here as in this building, but why?” There was a long pause in silence, Gaston didn’t actually know why he was. He had been helping try to stop the Guild and he knew why, but why are they still here? Their goal wasn’t Fyodor, so why were they? “Ohhh you don’t actually know, such a shame… but I can’t just let you leave after what you’ve seen, I’m sure Dostoy would love to see you.”
Gaston felt the gun move down his spine, pressing into the small of his back. He could feel the pressure shift as Nikolai pressed his finger on the trigger.
3…
2…
1…
BANG
…But the bullet never met skin…
Gaston activated his ability just in time, letting the bullet fly right through his ghostly body but then in a flash of gold it disappeared…
Gaston looked around confused…
Oh no…
Gaston saw the bullet reappear in the corner of his eye. The flash of gold then the searing pain in his side as the bullet drove into his skin just above his hip. The world went white in pain as Gaston fell to the floor. His vision was rapidly fading and the last thing he saw was Nikolai’s smiling face…

Cracking open my Religio Romana handbook to check out what's going on next month and, since my Saturnalia post is making the rounds again, decided to write down some for anyone that would like to write some Jason/Reyna/Camp Jupiter religious shenanigans throughout the year 👍
This isn't all of them btw! I just grabbed a couple that seemed most interesting for their respective months or most relevant to the Roman babes
January 11th and January 15th: Carmentalia, two feast days in honour of Carmenta (goddess Juturna also celebrated on the 11th)
February 13th to 22nd: Parentalia, commemoration of ancestors and the dead in families
February 22nd: Caristia, family pot luck in spirit of love and forgiveneness
February 23rd: Terminalia, in honor of Terminus
February 27th: Equirria, first of two horse-racing festivals in honor of Mars
March 1st: original New Year's Day when sacred fire of Rome was renewed; Matronalia in honor of Juno Lucina; also considered the dies natalis (birthday) of Mars
March 14th: second Equirria
March 15th: Feriae Iovi, sacred to Jove (Jupiter)
March 17th: Agonalia in honour of Mars
April 1st: Veneralia in honor of Venus
April 21st: Parilia, rustic festival in honor of Pales, Roman patron goddess of shepherds and flocks, and the dies natalis (birthday) of Rome
April 23rd: Vinalia Priora, the first of two wine festivals
May 9th, 11th, and 13th: Lemuria, festival of the dead
May 15th: Mercuralia, in honor Mercury; Feriae (free day) of Jove (Jupiter)
June 3rd: anniversary of the Temple of Bellona
June 7th to 15th: Vestavia, in honour of Vesta, June 9th specifically is a die religiousus to her
June 24th: festival of Fors Fortuna
July 6th to 13th: Ludi Apollinares, games in honor of Apollo
July 14th to 19th: series of markets or fairs - not religious
July 17th: anniversary of the Temple of Honos and Virtus, sacrifice to Victory
July 23rd: Neptunalia, held in honor of Neptune
August 23rd: Vulcanalia in honor of Vulcan
September 1st: ceremonies for Jupiter Tonans (the Thunderer) and Juno Regina
September 20th to 23rd: days set aside for markets and fairs
October 7th: rites for Jupiter Fulgur (Jupiter of daytime lightning) and Juno Curitis
November 4th to 17th: Plebeian Games
November 18th to 20th: markets and fairs
December 1st: ceremonies at temples for Neptune and for Pietas
December 3rd: Bona Dea rites for women only
December 17th to 23rd: Saturnalia in honor of Saturn with public ritual on the 17th
Side note that I am not an academic, not religious, not a pagan, and not spiritual in any way. I just like reading about mythologies and how those stories/deities used to be, and still are, worshipped by people. Also helps when coming up with religions and stuff for stories. But that's it, I have one book and access to google/wikipedia and that's the depths on my knowledge on Roman polytheistic practices 🙌

DID YOU SAW THE CHAPTER 114.5??
(I'm crying Bram was one of my favorites😭😭)
(But is that means that Fyodor is accually(?) immortal? And is his ability still actives when he dies by natural causes?)
Warning! Spoilers for Chapter 114.5 And me rambling/ having a theory
Yep, I have seen the last chapter. It was quite a rollercoaster. But... I don't really know if Bram is gone... Kafka seems to be reluctant with raising stakes.
I mean, really, the last named character, who really died, was Tanzo Tonan (Vice Justice Minister, who got killed by Gogol). From major ones, it was Shibusawa (or Ace with Karma, if you consider them major characters).
Even Fukuchi in the last chapter still can talk. I won't be surprised, if Fukuchi will be alive again, after singularity is dealt with.
BUT! Part of me still believes, that Kafka can raise stakes and start killing characters. But, in that case, if Bram really is gone, I will be disappointed. I want to see more with him and Aya.
This arc seems too "epic and massive", and, according to Kafka, the story is far from over.
//////////////
And to Fyodor... It seems, that he is immortal. Otherwise, I can't explain, why he didn't change for a bit ever since he overtake Bram's soldier's body.
Unless Fyodor being killed every few years, and didn't age because of it.
_____
Also, have a little theory about Fyodor's ability.
It seems, his ability can wait, when to overtake over the body of a killer.
Let me explain.
How did Fyodor took over Soldier's body:
Soldier killed Fyodor - Fyodor died - Immediately took over Soldier's body
How did Fyodor took over Bram's body:
In Mersault:
Fyodor died - Nikolai start mourning him - Dazai, off-screen, took antidote - Dazai and Chuuya returned inside Mersault - Chuuya dropped Sigma multiple times - Off-screen, they put Sigma in sitting position - Dazai rolls on the floor - Dazai returned to helicopter remains - Dazai, by himself, got "Fyodor's" body under the helicopter - Dazai realized, what Fyodor's ability is - Somewhere here, in the Airport, Fyodor took over Bram
In Airport (speculative):
Fukuzawa and Fukuchi have a talk - They returned from the book - Fukuzawa can't strike Fukuchi - Teruko stabs Fukuchi - Aya ran, where Fukuzawa, Teruko and Fukuchi are - Off-screen, Bram also got there - Fyodor took over Bram's body
I will pass Sigma, because, we can't be sure, if the memory he saw contained only Fyodor meeting with Bram, Fyodor's execution and Fyodor's ability, and didn't include few hours, before the sunrise, that Fyodor spend in a dungeon.
So, it seems, that Fyodor didn't take over Bram immediately.
So, it can be because of two things.
1. Distance does matter for Fyodor's ability, and it will take time.
2. Fyodor's ability can wait, before it starts working. Fyodor needs Bram to get closer to both swords and Fukuchi, so, he waited for the right moment.
If it's the case, does it mean, that Dazai can only stall Fyodor, but not get rid of him?
"No longer human" will work as long as Dazai is alive, so, can it be, that after his death Fyodor will take over?
Also, I have a feeling, that Kafka didn't think Fyodor's ability through. Otherwise, I can't explain, why BEAST! Dazai didn't deal with Fyodor by himself. How he thinks, BEAST! Atsushi and BEAST! Akutagawa will deal with Fyodor?
By the way... Is Fyodor even human? We already have Lovecraft, who isn't human, Bram's ability turned him into a vampire, and, if information from light novels are true, Arahabaki was a real deity, before being sealed.
To get answers, we have to wait. And I should think about Self-Aware! Bram fic.

My slightly deranged HC that Nikolai Gogol is visually impaired!
So this is truly off the rails, but watching the anime I had an odd realization that his mannerisms really suggest a reduced and/or blurred visual field to me.
Tumblr media
First up? This seemed quite strange to me. It took a while to pinpoint it, but Nikolai is sitting with his blind side towards Sigma. Which is odd. Wouldn't he prefer to keep Sigma within his view? Even his peripherals would give some sort of awareness if he still wanted to face the water. So why not sit on the reverse side? Because it doesn't matter anyway! Notice how Nikolai only reacts when Sigma calls his name. He was already planning on using his hearing to track Sigma's movements rather than his sight. I also think it's interesting how his uncovered eye narrows as he smiles. Maybe it's meant to portray emotion, maybe it's related to his plans. I just think it's interesting when combined with the rest of the scene.
Tumblr media
This scene always struck me as interesting! Who aims a gun without looking? Especially when using an incredibly precise spacial splicing ability? Possibly someone who can't see well enough for it to matter. With the proximity here Nikolai wouldn't need amazing aim. Just shooting straight ahead would certainly be a kill shot. Which is also why I think that his head down, eyes covered position here isn't an effort to conceal his identity. He doesn't need to bother when he is murdering the officer anyway and is already planning to introduce himself to Mushitaro.
Violence, however, brings me to my next point!
Tumblr media
The only time we see Nikolai attempt to shoot someone who was actually prepared for it (disregarding Mr. Tonan and the officer who were both unprepared) he misses abysmally. And to be fair, Atsushi is supernaturally quick and agile. It's simply interesting to me that Nikolai can't seem to aim unless he is less than a meter away from his target and they are sitting completely still.
Tumblr media
This scene really could be anything! I just think it's interesting that someone as coordinated and graceful as Nikolai would fall flat on his face. Maybe struggling to properly access depth or missing unknown obstacles because of a reduced visual field? Or maybe he just had a clumsy moment! It happens!
This next bit involves a lot of uncertainty! Since Nikolai has some eccentric mannerisms in general. But I find it curious how many involve him shutting his eyes. Even during combative situations.
Here!
Tumblr media
And here!
Tumblr media
Eyes shut again!
Tumblr media
To be honest? His eyes are shut during a lot of his prison monolog!
Tumblr media
With an honorable mention to this scene! Which likely has more to do with Nikolai's morality than his eyesight but still is unprecedented in the anime! (No iris at ALL)
Tumblr media
Although speaking of Nikolai and Meursault, I just want to yell to the void that maybe Nikolai felt the need to yank Fyodor up Like ThatTM to see his face clearly? From approximately two inches away.
Tumblr media
And to wrap up this Red String Board of Doom, I'd like to also mention that Nikolai would likely be albino if this was not anime! I have serious doubts that his skin, eye, and hair color are anything except an aesthetic choice but it is interesting when albinism typically comes with other effects. Such as poor vision!
If anyone stayed through this entire ramble, thank you! And please note this as my disclaimer that everything here is purely speculation and definitely reaching in most areas! I'm not an expert of any sort and just wanted to share my headcanon! ☆

do you have a favorite literary ref in bsd or is that a cruel question to ask
This is so hard! I like lots and lots of them, for different reasons. If I had to choose only one, and if I were to be sincere, Gin might be my favorite literary reference. I really love how much her namesake short story reframes Akutagawa's character, especially when comparing his Beast iteration against the version of him in bsd's main timeline. O-Gin also just really neatly and cleanly encapsulates what I love about Akutagawa's Kirishitan mono, including his affection for the Holy Fool trope.
To be more silly, I really love when Atsushi tell Tanzō Tonan that he has to feed his chameleon to escape the conversation with Tonan upon realizing Tonan wasn't being forthright (just ahead of the Decay of Angels framing the Agency). There are two references here that I adore (1) the reference to Chamelon Diary, in which Nakajima Atsushi semi-autobiographically recounts receiving a chameleon from a student and also his epiphany on how to live absent objective existential meaning; and (2) the reference to Tonan-sensei, a short story by Nakajima Atsushi about his beloved uncle, whom I also adore.
Rather than attempt to write an essay on Tonan-sensei and his influence on Nakajima Atsushi, I'll simply include a roughly translated version of the short story's Wikipedia synopsis:
The story depicts the protagonist, who secretly harbors self-loathing resentment towards his uncle because he shares similar mental characteristics with himself, but through his interactions with his uncle as he faces death, he gradually sorts out his critical view of the coexistence of love and hate and comes to realize the deep love he has for his uncle that lies dormant within him.
I will also include below a snippet about Tonan (referred to also as "Tan") from Nakajima Atsushi: His Life and Work, a dissertation submitted to the University of Hawaii by Nobuko Miyama Ochner in May 1984 (the date is relevant, because Ochner-sensei was able to speak to some of Atsushi's then-living family and friends to piece together his biography):
[Nakajima Atsushi's grandfather's] second eldest son, Tan, was also a scholar of Chinese. A bright boy, he was able to read the Chinese classics at the age of six and compose poetry and prose in Chinese at thirteen, according to the Japanese system of reckoning age. He was a proud, uncompromising, and impatient man, who never married, and who seemed to be always pursuing the impossible. In a short piece entitled "Tonan Sensei" (Tonan was Tan's pen name), Atsushi describes his uncle as having the virgin's beautifully clear, pure eyes— "the eyes of a man who is always dreaming an impossible dream." Tan, who revered General Nogi Maresuke (1849-1912), was an "amalgam of fervent patriotism and the temperament of a traditional Confucian scholar." He was greatly concerned about the future of Japan and China, as well as of Asia in general, confronted with the onslaught of the Western colonial powers.
...
In his articles he laments the ignorance of Chinese culture and tradition on the part of the Japanese diplomats in China, and criticizes their excessive reliance upon Western sources of news information. He felt that the peoples of Japan and China must unite in their efforts to repel the outsiders from East Asia; he went to China at least two times to try to enlist Chinese support for his vision. One of the prominent men he met was the scholar Lo Chen-yii (1866-1940), who later wrote an introduction to the posthumously published collection of Tan's poetry and prose, Tonan sonko. Atsushi is said to resemble this uncle most.
