FASHION BLOGGER - TOMMY LEI
INTERVIEW Tell us a little about yourself. My name is Tommy Lei, and I am the principal styleteller of MYBELONGING – a high fashion, menswear and lifestyle site. Some quick facts: 26/M/LA. Hong Kong raised, LA based. Son to a tailor father and seamstress mother. An Angeleno with a New York state-of-mind. Cornell survivor. Loves to travel, hotel hop, indulge in good eats, binge on Netflix, long walks on Downtown LA pavements and get jiggy with it – at all times. What do you miss most about Hong Kong? I miss the energy the most, because LA is considerably more sprawled out and laid back. What is your favorite hangout? At the moment, my favorite hangout is the newly-opened LINE Hotel – by the Sydell Group in partnership with Roy Choi, Knibb Design, The Houston Brothers and Poketo. I love how it’s a one-stop hangout complete with a cafe, two top-notch restaurants, a pool, and sweet suites for a staycation. What is the most difficult aspect about blogging? I think there’s a general misconception that all we do is lounge around taking amazing Instagrams and accepting gifts from brands. In reality, there’s a lot of hard work, long hours and intensive brainstorming involved – as is with most “glamorous” career paths. Maintaining a work life balance is the probably the most difficult aspect about this industry – because the lines are so blurred between professional and personal lives. Are you an early bird or a night owl? A little bit of both. I often wake early but work till late. What song best describes your work ethic? Röyksopp & Robyn – Do It Again If you did not get into fashion, what do you think you would be doing right now? Most likely, a creative role in digital marketing and public relations – having previously worked on the very first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race as well as representing corporate, Fortune 500 clients (Confession: I had to wear the Happy Star suit once for a Carl’s Jr. event). Pretty much what I am doing now – storytelling in the most authentic manner possible and from the heart at all times. What is your favorite color, food, and shoes? Minimally colorful. Anything animal style from In-N-Out. A pair of all-white Adrian sneakers from Acne Studios. What advice do you have for someone trying to start blogging? I think it’s very important to know yourself and spark a conversation that you live, breathe and believe in. After all, a blog should be about continuing the dialogue and not dictating what it should be. Basically, always do you. Forget all the haterz. Where do you see the future of blogging going? In many ways, the future is now. Blogging has become significantly more segmented and defined than it’s ever been. The direction of blogging, as far as I can foresee, will be more and more niche-based. There’s a saying that there’s an audience for everyone – and it’s true, for better or for worse. What do you think will be the hottest fashion for Fall/Winter? Specifically: More edgy, androgynous, sporty and unisex options cropping up on runways all over. The past few seasons, particularly at London, Paris and Milan fashion weeks, have been pivotal for menswear. We’re beginning to see more crossover and blurring of the gender lines when it comes to apparel. This is personally very exciting for someone like me whose proportions and aesthetics don’t fit within the confines of dapper and formal menswear. Also, it is a bold testament thatthere is more to men’s’ style beyond the suit and tie.Generally: Confidence, because it’s timeless.
