Bleed to Love Her

Posted something new, and a little...different...earlier today, on AO3. Title: Bleed to Love Her Chapters: 1 / ?

Warnings: +18, mildly suggestive scenes, trauma, gun violence.

Summary: He doesn’t know how he does it, he just knows that it happens with frightening quickness; that suddenly he’s howling like a wounded animal, he and his brother tumbling against the side of a dumpster in a tangle of limbs and fists, and it’s only his slight edge in speed that gives him the upper hand, that lets him straddle Joel’s legs and rain punches to his ribs, his jaw – and he barely feels the retaliatory hits to his own ribs, his stomach – but he feels the arms around his neck, choking him, pulling him back –

The world is swimming, the tops of the buildings blurring into the wispy gray sky. The taste of copper floods his mouth. He's flat on his back, the rough, wet pavement biting into his skin through his shirt, and Tess looms over him, grinding her boot into his chest, pinning him in place.

Slight AU: Tommy never leaves the Fireflies. He still heads west, assigned to help establish their newest base and protect their most essential asset - a scientist who thinks he can develop a "cure." Even without his help, Joel and Ellie manage to find their way to Salt Lake City.

Some things change, while others stay exactly the same.

What do you think the adults lives were like in high school/before the outbreak kinda deal?

Joel:

Based on Joel's personality and lineup of work, I imagine he was likely an average student, not particularly enthusiastic about academics but not a troublemaker either. He mostly kept to himself. He might have liked shop class, woodshop, or vocational skills. He'd sometimes strum his guitar on the evening, practicing what his father taught him. Joel was athletic and probably played sports, especially football and running. He had some friends, but don't think he was part of the popular crowd. He likely had a small circle of close friends but wasn't part of any cliques. He likely dropped out to work in manual labor jobs. He had a good sense of humor and wasn't always the brooding, stoic man he became later in his life.

Tommy:

This guy seems a bit more outgoing and impressionable than his brother. I think he didn't have to work hard to fit in with a group, probably smoked pot and drank on weekends. He likely had a pretty girlfriend and was part of the "cool" crowd. Tommy seemed to enjoy partying and hooking up with girls. He probably did okay in school but wasn't very interested in academics, coasting on charisma more than smarts.

Tess:

She was probably the rebellious bad girl type who smoked and generally acted out. She had low self-esteem but an aggressive, in-your-face attitude to hide her insecurities that she later learned to accept as her own worth. Tess likely got into fights, went to parties, slept around and liked sports. She took risks and lived on the fringes, not afraid to break rules. She probably had a rough home life, so she played out her pain through destructive behavior. She was intelligent but unmotivated by school. It's easy to imagine her getting in trouble with teachers, the law, and the wrong crowd of people.

Bill:

This man was almost certainly bullied in high school for being gay and weird. He likely kept to himself and got good grades to please his parents. Bill was probably interested in mechanical things even then. I imagine him being shy, nervous, and obsessive-compulsive even as a teen. He likely had zero friends and was just trying to survive. Bill may have come out to his parents who rejected him, leading him to flee at the first chance. Probably paranoid, isolated and socially awkward his whole life.

Marlene:

Popular girl. Ambitious, smart, and socially skilled. She seems like she was the idealistic and earnest type in high school—the girl who organized charity drives and protests, ran the school paper, and was engaged with the community. She probably came from an activist family. Marlene likely had a clique of like-minded friends and was vocally political even back then. She was probably a star student and leader on the debate team. Marlene was the type who followed her heart and opinions. But beneath the surface, had a darker side and hard edges.

there is something so intimate and special about ‘the last of us.’ in the way that neil druckmann was terrified that no one would even be interested in this incredible story he was pouring his heart into over a decade ago. in the way that the original cast were brought together for the first game but not only to play the characters and bring them to life; to become them. the way that ashley johnson is in love with space the same way ellie is. how joel loves a guitar and to sing, just as troy baker does. the dog we find at the dam as joel being buckley, troy’s dog that had passed away three years prior to the first game, living on forever in a different world. we have a phenomenal director fall in love with this story, and when craig and neil meet they agree to make this insane show that neil was trying so hard to make a reality after being turned away on multiple occasions. the show cast being so intertwined with the game cast. merle carrying marlene’s legacy throughout her whole life. ashley birthing the character on screen that she gave life to at the very start of this journey. the same composer that created one of the most iconic soundtracks not only being featured in the second game as his own character but coming back and creating yet another beautiful score for its adaptation. the directors both having ellie’s switchblade tattooed on their bodies. getting to listen to troy, neil and craig gush and tear up talking about this franchise for hours on the podcast because they are just that god damn proud of it.

‘the last of us’ is something to be apart of.
