Tess at least had the decency to lift her eyes from her work once he’d loosened his tie. She parted her lips around the end of her pen while he undressed. Joel thought he had the finger on the pulse of what he desired and how to get there, but with Tess, she asked things which brought him into conflict.

There was the discomfort of being the only naked one in the room, of being instructed to strip for the casual pleasure of somebody else. There was his ego, which told him this wasn’t the way it was supposed to be. He had always taken the lead. He was always the dominant partner - the man was the dominant partner. But this arrangement with Tess opened up doors within himself that he hadn’t even known were closed - let alone there in the first place.

They were in her office. It was late afternoon and the city was buzzing far below her penthouse windows but for them, here, all of that simply fell away. Joel laid the clothes over the back of a chair. The look in his boss’s eye made it all worth it. His pride could take the hit when he knew how good it felt to surrender.

As far as I’m concerned, the single most radical change from journal fandom is the idea that fandom is primarily a space for kids.

I thought it might be helpful to share some images that have the vibe of Avalon, Tess's main home in Interstellar Overdrive. None of these (with the exception of the kitchen, which is scarily accurate to what I imagined) are exact, but it'll give you a pretty good vibe of how the house is designed with its alternating levels, plants and furnishings.
