Mad Hatter/Reader - Lessons
Tumblr media
Summary - Undertaking another one of Jervis' 'etiquette' lessons proves to be a wicked undertaking indeed. (tw: dom/sub themes, teasing, oral sex, food kink etc)
Fic Masterlist
Link to AO3
Tumblr media
Delicately picking up the small silver spoon, you bring it to your lips in a pretend sip as you announce your answer with a shaky confidence.
"Soup."
"Excellent, March Hare." Jervis' lilting voice trails out from his unseen spot behind you. "A soup spoon indeed! From tomato to broth to mock turtle. You're doing well."
Flushing with pride at the willing praise, you sigh and rub your thighs together; agitating the egg-shaped vibe which lay nestled between the walls of your sex. Wearing nothing but a white ruffled collar and a pale blue skirt so scandalously short that it may as well have been a belt, the cool air of Jervis' apartment was as familiar as ever as you remain in your place at his large kitchen table.
Speaking of the man himself, his thin hand appeared from your side, pointing expectantly at another piece of polished silverware. This one was a fork, its shape slightly smaller than the one to its side and your muddled brain struggles to remember what the hell it was for - the hesitation making your heart pick up its pace within your chest.
Rolling your ass against the chair, the movement has the unfortunate side-effect of shifting the vibe and its new position draws a keening moan from your lips.
"Jervis, oh my god-"
"Hush, March Hare!" Jervis scolds and you flinch as the tip of the riding crop which you know is sitting in his other hand arcs around to bounce off your right nipple, instantly sparking a heat-laced pain across your chest. "It's rude to speak over someone trying to give a lesson."
Fighting the urge to raise your hands and brush them across your pebbled and aching nipples, you instead focus on picking up the small china teacup which has long since been filled with tea for you to enjoy as you endured your etiquette lesson. However, the cup had barely touched your lips when your unspoken desires were answered as the reappearance of his hands made you flinch - the cool palms quickly gripping your chest in a rough pinch as Jervis' staggered breathing makes itself known just behind your head.
Delighted, you sigh into the cup as you arch your back ever so slightly, giving him easier access to your aching tits as the stimulation makes your cunt clench even more roughly around the vibe.
Finishing the last few drops of tea, you deposit the teacup back onto its assigned plate noisily as your shaking fingers make the fine china clink together. His small digits now kneading your tits almost thoughtfully, Jervis seems to be waiting for something as his mint-laden breath washes past your left ear.
Realising you were missing something, a gasp of delirious pleasure escapes you as his fingers pinch your nipples playfully - pulling at the sensitive buds as he tuts disapprovingly into your neck.
"A finished cup, my sweet rabbit. And no cry for a place change? Clean cup, clean cup. So easily forgotten."
Opening your mouth to say the words, his hand is quick to clamp around your lips and you can taste a subtle and sweet, almost sugary substance on his fingers.
"What a sad tea party." He continues to scold, his free hand teasing down your stomach, tracing every fleshy inch with reverence. "With manners and etiquette thrown to the crocodiles."
His finger drops to the seat, curling back on itself as he splits your slit and you widen your legs to allow him free access. A clear goal in mind, your body starts like it were shocked as the soft pad of his finger rubs a delicate circle around your engorged, neglected clit.
"Jervis."
"Mmm, my rabbit?"
"Don't stop." You breathe out shakily, the tightening band of arousal making your legs tremble slightly as your toes curl towards the floor.
"Please- please don't sto-"
The plea is cut short by his fingers as his free hand presses a thin sliver of cake to your lips - the sugary vanilla taste catching you by surprise as you obediently open your mouth to swallow it.
He enjoyed this.
Feeding and watering you.
The spark which alit in his eyes as he provided for you was as endearing as it was erotic - food play long having since established itself in your games as sweet treats and edibles were shared between you.
Unfortunately, his movements caught you off guard and a small dollop of light blue buttercream slipped free of your bottom lip to drop to the lowest ruffle of your white, embroidered collar.
A theatrical gasp rings in your ear and you whine as his wicked fingers scuttle away from your aching cunt. Any protest dies however as a flash of silver just at the corner of your eye makes you still and you feel the faintest edge of his pocketknife trailing across the sensitive juncture where your collarbone meets the shoulder.
"Messy rabbit." Jervis mutters, slipping the knife up to press against the white ruffled collar which he had gently looped around your neck at the beginning of your lesson. "No point wasting a lovely outfit on such a messy rabbit."
The ruffled collar falls free into a crumpled heap in your lap, but it's swiftly removed as Jervis snatches it up with his fingers and deposits it in the pockets of his slacks.
"Hold out your hand."
More than a little petulantly, you hold your palm out and he's quick to move as he swaps the knife for the riding crop which remains tucked under his armpit. Striking down harshly, the cool leather slices across your palm in a bolt of heat and you wince at the discomfort as he stands to move before you.
"Maybe my lessons are wasted?" Jervis continues, his thin hands pressing down on your exposed thighs as his blue eyes pierced your own. "Trying to turn my March Hare into a proper lady might be one of the six impossible things I have to imagine before breakfast?"
You glance up at him, blinking your eyes coquettishly as you beg forgiveness with only a look.
"Touch me." He continues in a rough demand, accented voice slightly roughened by his clear arousal as he stands fully. The darkened slacks do little to hide how hard he is, the fabric bulging over the jut of his clothed cock, and you run your palm across it gently, enjoying just how aroused he is by his little game with you.
Looping your hands within his belt, you quickly loosen the leather and allow it to hand free. His shortened height makes the task much easier and you smile at the slight inhale he makes when your hands unzip his fly and free his straining cock from its confines. Within your cunt, the vibe pressing against your walls makes it difficult to concentrate as you clench around it desperately, chasing the release which was slowly approaching.
"My Hatter," you purr as you wrap a hand around his length, fingers brushing the blonde curl of pubes which decorate the base, "and my sweet, kindly teacher. Maybe you deserve a reward for helping me out with all these hard lessons."
Stroking along his cock, you groan sharply as the vibe within you rockets up another level and the sudden onslaught of vibration is enough to quickly tip you over the edge that has threatened you for so long. Hand dropping to curl around the edge of the wooden chair, you grind your cunt against the wood as your release forces a guttural moan from your lips - every nerve in your body firing off as your teeth bite down on your lower lip hard enough that you taste copper through the pleasurable aftershocks.
The vibrations don't stop but they do back off slightly, reducing to a pleasant hum which makes you twitch in place as your release pools across your cunt and thighs - making a sordid mess of the chair itself.
"Now, now, March Hare! Distractions aren't appreciated when hard work is required." Jervis taunts but his expression is satisfied and oddly predatory as he watches you suffer through your pleasures.
"Focus."
And with that, he jerked his hips forward with clear intent, targeting his cock upwards towards your mouth. Giving a cheshire grin, you drop your head slightly to make up the space and take him within your mouth; your hand swiftly reappearing to wrap around his velvety length as he demands his payment.
He tastes as familiar as ever, the salt of his pre-cum cutting through the sugariness of the cake he had forced in there earlier and you moan around his cockhead - enjoying the way that the vibrations from your moan make his eyes widened and his mouth go slack.
He's as vocal as ever as his lips spill free a mixture of muffled grunts and sweet whispers - your name mixing with soft praises as you bob your head along his length, matching the movement by twisting your wrist with every stroke.
It doesn't take him long; the eroticism of your 'lessons' and his love of your mouth making him come more quickly than he may have liked and his hands press gently at the sides of your head to keep your lips around the tip of his cock as his release floods your mouth.
Swallowing down what he has to offer, you drink in his whimpering groans with equal enthusiasm as you focus on pleasing him. As gentlemanly as ever, he pulls free of your mouth quickly and you catch your breath as he tucks his wilting cock away in his slacks.
In a flash, he's dropping to his haunches before you and his mouth is on your own - tasting himself as much as you as his tongue demands entry. It's a playful kiss, part thanks and part apology as his thumb rubs gently along the developing welt on your palm from his earlier punishment.
"My Match Hare." He mutters, whispering the words into your mouth.
Matching his energy, your hands slip up his shoulders to tug gently at the blonde hairs which sit at the nape of his neck.
"My Hatter."

I'm curious about the Hetalia fandom in China. Can you share some stories (fandom culture, fanfic/fanart, event, etc) in there? 🫶🏻🌹
In recent years, I have had the opportunity to know some Chinese Hetalians, and I find them very friendly (including you, too 🫣).
Most of my favorite couples are not too... popular in China (🤕), so the chances to meet someone share the same passion is much lower (😭), but everyone I met who sailed the same ship 🚣🏻‍♀️ with me is really nice 💕
Thank you for answering all of my random questions 😭‼️
disclaimer first: I have *been* in the hetalia fandom in China, yes, but strictly speaking I'm not actively involved in events/offline meetings/fandom chats etc. so this may be a biased viewpoint. BUT it's still a viewpoint, and since you asked I figure I should tell you as much of what I know as possible.
So...here we go! 🤓☝️
(This whole thing looks like a whole ass analysis bc that's how my brain have been working for the past few days. I rly want to sound like my inner enthusiastic self but somehow it turned out like this. urgh💦)
From my experiences, I'd say Chinese hetalian fandom is most similar to that of Japan/ Korea (typical east Asian bunch bruh). And on a macro scale, Chinese hetalians share basically the same material with every other hetalian around the world.
Here are some things abt the fandom culture as a whole that I can categorize and tell you:
Censorship issues and avoidance
Due to certain sensitive contents and the...weird Internet regulation laws i guess, main streaming sites such as Bilibili does not have episodes like the April fools' one, the Valentine one, the first episode of the horror movie one, and the whole freaking season 7. ofc the consensus here is that we all have various ways of getting the missing episodes' resources, so yes we know Ludwig proposed using a tomato ring and we know everyone served bc Antonio was being stupidly kinky (kinky-ly stupid?)
This also applies to how Chinese hetalians would refer to the characters. Like elsewhere, we either call them by their human name (e.g. Alfred, Alfred F. Jones) or the nation name (e.g. America).
- In the human name scenario, it can be just "阿尔弗雷德" ("Alfred" in Chinese), or it can be various nicknames branching out from the name "Alfred", like “阿尔弗"("Alfie")/"阿尔" ("Al").
- In the nation name scenario, though, dashes are used to separate characters to avoid unwanted problems. "美国" ("America") will thus be typed as "美/国". As you can see that's pretty troublesome, especially if there's more than two characters in a name. So, alternatively, countries names are also nicknamed using various ways like what it sounds similar to, either in English, Chinese, or the original Japanese. Now that's a whole different language thingy topic to expand on...I'll just leave it here
Fandom events and interactions
That's something pretty popular on Lofter i think, tho I've never participated in one. Basically, a bunch of people will gather up for a week/month/specific anniversary of celebration, in which they contribute art or fanfics to a character/a ship/a group using a special tag.
Oh right Tumblr has those too...just remembered. Okay I guess then that's easy to understand ✌️
Some may have group chats with oomfs that like the same ship/character. These chats can be using communication apps like Wechat or QQ. It's like a oomfs pro max chat box where they joke and rants abt everything.
Others would go to offline events, organized by fans or comic cons officials. Cosplayers and artists would do their thing of serving the fandom with amazing works.
There's also this obsession with buying official goods like badges and cards, putting these goods in neat arrangements and decorations, and photographing them. I'm not sure what that's called but I've seen fans do that with their fav character(s). Pretty sure it's also a thing elsewhere.
Fanfics. fan arts and ships
Let's just say the popular ships will always be popular ships. Tho I'm highlighting the fact that russia/china is a pretty popular ship up there with UsUk/FrUk/Gerita etc. best I can comment is "because history" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Fanfics and fan arts are posted on sites such as Lofter. Bilibili is used more for editing/animation. Lots of good stuff can be found bc istg there Chinese hetalians cook HARD. Also fun fact: those posted on ao3 have a high possibility of being or having smut/r18 stuff bc...see censorship lol
---
riiiiight i think that's about it for this time! you can see I've locked in for this answer bc there's little emoji used lmao
ngl your questions can get my head working and thinking so i like them very very much! You can relax and "tutoyer" yourself w me 😏

These are all the things I want to grow and have the seeds for this year, though some things are missing from this list. I still need more soil, most of the produce goes to the senior center so if anyone wants to throw me 3 dollars for a bag of dirt it goes to a good cause, I also save seeds and distribute them to neighbors and some of the people at the senior center. This blog is my only income source as I am an unpaid live-in aide for an elderly woman. No pressure though. Also if anyone just wants to put gardening discussions in my inbox I am totally up for that!

I thought it might be fun to list "Best cultures for", imo, BTW, doesn't include SK in most cases.
So using my Anthro degree for something. This is Academic interest. I'm only giving the loose reasons why. I'm not particularly promoting fetishization here. I'm saying, do the research into this specific culture for this specific cultural aspect. rather than blind worship.
Agriculture
Of the three major regions, (West Asia, Southern China-ish, Meso America/Northern South America) hands down, The Americas.
I mean, if you look at the genetics and origin of the potato, that itself is super impressive. Through domestication alone, they managed to make the potato grow in all environments, AND changed the amount of genes the potato has. !@#$ What? Really? And then you have things like Amaranth, corn, squash, beans of different kinds, quinoa, tomatoes which is related to nightshade, which is used more than eggplant worldwide, and Sweet Potatoes which they gave to Polynesians. Also single handedly through the Potato and Sweet Potato saved China, Korea, Ireland, and several other places from famine, thus also helping to end the slavery cycle in Korea, China and Japan. I mean... who are you going to rank the highest in that case?
Second place ranking I have to give to Western Asia. Daaaaamn, you have wheat, oats, barley, sheep, goats, cows, horses (supposedly), pigs. That's pretty impressive.
Third place Southern China—rice production, most of the world's commercial flowers, soybeans, a lot of the fruits including citrus. You also get honey.
Honorable mention to South Asia for Chickens. (Indonesia and India specifically)
Despite this, apples are my favorite fruit. lol I need to eat a Courtland apple please. I can eat them by the bushel.
Sea navigation
Hands down, Polynesians, beats the pants off of everyone else by a nautical league. When you can feel sea currents with your hands, be able to get your people first to the South Pacific from China, and then navigate ALLLLL the way to the Americas and beat Europeans, Yes, definitely they get the crown several times over. I mean... think hard about it. When you memorize stick charts, casually and then don't have them at sea and sometimes your tattoos are only brief reminders, FLOORED.
Make Europeans in the same time period look terrible.
House design
I'm looking at passive solar, specifically rather than aesthetics. For me, this is kinda toss up. Indigenous peoples rocked it pretty hard, especially in the South West US into Mexico region. They were exceptionally good at regulating air flow. But Koreans invented underfloor heating. And Chinese figured out Feng Shui which is just Passive solar+ a bunch of other stuff that's practical. (Such as your bathroom shouldn't be above your kitchen). But I have to admit I also admire some of the Indian Passive solar efforts (subcontinent). This one is hard to decide. But if you're researching, I'd look there.
Gender
My favorite to point to is Bugis people of Indonesia. 5 different genders. Freaking awesome. Of course it's a bit disciplined these days by the government, but it's worth investigating.
As I wrote before East Asian gender systems of the past were often more fluid and flexible and still are compared to European ideologues.
Clothing?
No one has impressed me that much, tbh. It's a pick and choose. I can choose the most impractical, but not the one that wins my heart for inventiveness.
Crakows, though, crack me up every single last time. Especially for the Phallic nature and that they were associated with men. But that's on the impractical list. That's also why I submitted it for review on History Hit's fashion list. I haven't gotten over it since I first saw it, I think it was on a Dan Snow documentary about British kings. I mean look at them and resist laughing your butt off.
Religion
I personally think that real Voudoun is much cooler than what's in the movies, which is really racist 98% of the time. It is a Synchronized religion, and it is Christian-based in some ways, but c'mon, look it up and be impressed.
BTW, I really dislike the conflation of zombies with Voudou, granted as an outsider, since it belongs to Bokor and is a warning against *becoming a slave* not about white people trying to shoot zombies with grey and darker faces because OMG, slave uprising psychology.
Zonbis, are cooler than zombies since it's about overcoming and resisting masters, rather than about masters mass killing their slaves, which is what the later meaning seems to say. Ad Zombie movies are at their best when they symbolically get the original concept and meaning. So like becoming a work drone.
^^ I still have a soft spot for Muism as a Korean, but ya know, Korean. I lean towards liking shamanism, probably because of the historical acceptance of LGBTQIA and disability.
Shamanism is also appealing in some ways because often shamanism says that if everything in your life is going wrong, then that might be a sign of powers or spirits calling to you, rather than saying in the old Christian ideology that you've sinned deeply, so you need to repent.
But this is usually not what people are asking about when they are thinking about religions. They usually want the polytheistic, Jade Emperor, Greek, Roman, Egyptians, Norse route. Or Monotheism. Kinda dull, really. Where are the other types in fiction. I mean, Druids?
Give me some totemism for once.
Government System
Look up Wigan Council. I might also be biased towards it because of Gaya, but it's a way to play with things and also allow for more LGBTQIA royalty. Royalty without autocracy?
Inventions?
Hands down, no doubt, Islamic Empire. I mean, when you have Automatons without electricity, you're winning without question. When your people are inventing surgery, calculating the size of the Earth, allowing women to read, learn and write, inventing the lens, which is the cornerstone of so many inventions, and you got Europe's Bacon by inventing the Scientific Method first, historical crush does't cut it. I mean, when you can calculate a pointed arch, do geometric mosaics with mathematical principles, I am floored beyond reason.
Conclusion
This isn't to say I'm not impressed by specific things from other cultures as well, but this is broad strokes. Vedanta Hinduism, for me, is impressive from India. And I really like the practicality of Hanbok. (Why hanbok over hanfu is a long, long post) And I've raved over kimchi before multiple, multiple times, more than you know (quora... I think I have the most answers and I also answer with the food science of Kimchi down to the bacteria.) BTW, dumplings are damned clever.
What are your favorite culture for specific things from those cultures? Would you choose different cultures for each of these things? If so, why? What impressive things have I missed that have floored you?

Got tagged by the sweet @ennisapril💗 Thank you!
Last song you listened to:
Frog on My Toe from Tori Amos - because it's the last song on her A Piano the Collection album and that just ended.
Favourite colour:
I would say all the greens. I do love most colours but greens always seem to draw me in the most.
Currently watching:
I'm always and forever watching Our Flag Means Death on a loop these days. Also just rewatched the LotR trilogy, and started the Time Bandits series yesterday evening (for Taika reasons).
Favourite flavour plants in my garden:
Ohhh plants, my fave thing currently! I only have a balcony garden, I hope that counts? I guess my current favourite are my tomatoes - one of them is giving me sweet fruit every day currently, the other is just ripening. I just love tomatoes so much. Also, the China asters that I brought up from seeds are like 80-90cm tall now and starting to bloom. They are a source of small pride for someone who used to kill even cactuses...
Current obsession:
You guessed it - plants and Our Flag Means Death. My obsessions have staying power.
Last thing I googled:
Patas Urheilutikku, which was a famed ice cream from my childhood and nothing else will ever compare. I googled it because we were discussing childhood things with dearest @honeybeelullaby 💚
Favourite season:
I'm always torn between spring and autumn, but this year the summer has been treating me well.
Skill I’d like to learn:
Moderation, always. I never seem to learn it.
Best Advice I have realized is true:
Hmm. Maybe: Try again the things you had sworn you disliked because of a bad experience years and years ago. I have realized this about many things these past couple of years, but most recently: watercolour painting. Used to hate it, tried it again, now I love it! Notable mention is also coconut - used to hate it because I tried some coconut sweets as a kid and disliked them then. Fast forward a few decades - gave it another try, now one of my fave flavors! Go figure.
+ + + +
This was fun!! Tagging dears @honeybeelullaby @a-darling-thing @morgendaemmerung89 @mylastvow @bakingsherlycakes @loveinthemindpalace @geoffreydromgoole @consultingpacha @folkyfaery @writingfanficsfan @wtgilsa and every single one of you, because these things are vital to know about a person ❤️

I is still akshully vegetarian but I shared da authentic recipe fur Hoomans wat isn't and mai noo furiends in China who has not had school lunch pizza and put mai changes at da end. Dis works fine wif fake meats and cheeze, too. Yoo do yoo. --Loki💛😸 This is the American government recipe for school lunch pizza redesigned for only 12 slices. It freezes well and reboots nicely in an air fryer. You will need an electric mixer with a wire attachment and a large baking sheet/jelly roll pan.
Sauce: 1lb(450g) ground beef, chopped medium onion, 2 cloves garlic, 1c (250ml) water, small 170g can tomato paste, 1T (15ml) white or granulated brown sugar, 1t (5ml) dried basil and oregano. Brown the beef with the onion and garlic, lower heat and simmer with remaining ingredients until very thick.
American "government cheese" mix:
3.5 oz (100g) each mozzarella, cheddar, and American cheese. This approximates the flavor and texture of Government Cheese served in public schools.
Dough: 1 packet or 7.5g instant yeast, 2 cups (500ml) water at 110F (43C) or less, mix and let sit for 5 minutes.
Dry mix: 12 oz (330g) All purpose flour, 2oz (50g) powdered milk, 1T (30ml) sugar, 1.5t (7.5ml) salt. Mix together and mix into the yeast solution on low.
Fat: 1.5T to 1/8 cup (20-30ml) any oil, mix in on low.
Increase to medium speed and mix 10 minutes. Don't panic, it's supposed to look like pancake batter.
Grease the baking sheet and sprinkle with medium-grind cornmeal. When the mixer is done, pour the dough into the pan and spread evenly. Let it rest for 20 minutes while you preheat the oven to 425F (220C).
Bake the crust 10 minutes. Spread the meat mixture to the edges, top with the cheese, and bake 8-10 more minutes, depending on whether you like the American cheese to brown and bubble. Cut into 12 slices.

U.S. President Donald Trump is notoriously indifferent to human rights, and he makes no exception for China. Rather, Trump’s dominant concern with Beijing has been America’s trade deficit—prompting the full-blown trade war that now consumes headlines. In his last term, he secured a largely unfulfilled pledge from Chinese leader Xi Jinping to buy more American goods. But a greater focus on Beijing’s abysmal human rights record would have positive trade effects.
Today, Beijing’s most severe repression is directed at China’s Uyghurs, a Turkic-speaking ethnic group of 11 million people, mostly Muslim, who live primarily in the northwestern Xinjiang region. Beginning in 2017, the Chinese government detained some 1 million Uyghurs.
Even when Chinese officials decide that detained Uyghurs are sufficiently loyal to Beijing, many are “freed” only to be placed in forced labor. No one knows the precise numbers, but Uyghur forced labor is said to be pervasive in Xinjiang, with an estimated 2.5 million at risk. Some 80,000 Uyghurs are estimated to have been forced to work in other parts of China as well.
Under focus of the highly intrusive surveillance regime that Beijing has established in Xinjiang, Uyghurs have been detained for as little as traveling abroad or communicating with people overseas, donating to mosques, or preaching the Quran without authorization. Beijing claims to be fighting terrorism, but the sweeping nature of the detention belies that pretext.
Many Uyghurs are still in custody, held at least until their jailers think they have sufficiently abandoned their religion, culture, and language. Hundreds of thousands of families have had Han Chinese “guests” imposed upon them to monitor their behavior. Some Uyghurs, especially intellectuals, have now been charged with trumped-up crimes and given long prison sentences.
The persecution has been so severe that human rights groups concluded that it constitutes a crime against humanity. A plummeting birthrate among Uyghurs—caused by the widespread detention as well as the use of forced birth control—led the first Trump administration and others to find that Beijing was committing genocide.
In his last term, Trump seemed as if he couldn’t care less. He reportedly told Xi that the mass detention of Uyghurs “was exactly the right thing to do.”
Since then, the U.S. government’s response has been tougher. In 2021, it adopted the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. Sponsored by then-Sen. Marco Rubio, who is now Trump’s secretary of state, the legislation presumptively bars all imports from Xinjiang unless the importing company can demonstrate that forced labor was not used. Given the opacity of supply chains in Xinjiang, that is difficult if not impossible to show.
Unfair Chinese competitive practices are typically thought of in terms of government subsidies or concessional loans, but the use of forced labor, apart from being a serious human rights abuse, is also one way for Chinese producers to unfairly undercut competitors’ prices. People subject to forced labor have no capacity to insist on a fair wage or to switch jobs if wages are too low.
A growing list of industries is affected, including cotton (about 20 percent of the world’s cotton comes from Xinjiang, creating a major problem for the apparel industry), tomatoes (representing some 15 percent of the world’s tomato paste), and aluminum (10 percent). But the affected industry of the greatest strategic importance is polysilicon, which is used to make solar panels, one of the green products for which Beijing hopes to corner the global market. Some 45 percent of the world’s polysilicon is produced in Xinjiang.
Beyond his infatuation with tariffs, Trump should address China’s unfair competitive practice of using Uyghur forced labor. Some steps are straightforward. He should augment the number and expertise of U.S. customs agents assigned to examine Chinese imports to determine which came from Xinjiang.
That is especially needed to ensure there are sufficient agents to support Trump’s announced plan as of May 2 to end the exemption from customs inspections for packages worth less than $800 that importers can use to evade the ban on goods using Uyghur forced labor. Trump’s attempt in February to close that loophole was quickly stymied by the insufficient number of inspectors that caused serious delays.
Customs inspectors need added resources because they must do more than simply examine certificates of origin. Why should any customs official believe Chinese shipping documents when Beijing has already tried to cover up the detention facilities for Uyghurs by claiming that they were merely “vocational training centers,” as if no one would notice the walls, barbed-wire fences, and guards?
But Trump sees himself as a disruptor, and there are certain disruptive steps that would be productive to take. The European Union has a policy against importing goods that are made from forced labor, but it has not adopted a presumption against imports from Xinjiang.
Given the difficulty of identifying any particular good as the product of forced labor, the EU blocks few imports. While exports from Xinjiang to the United States have plummeted, exports to the EU in 2022 increased by a third. As part of resolving his trade war, Trump should press the EU, as well as Britain, Canada, and Australia, to adopt a similar presumption against any import from Xinjiang.
Chinese businesses are also evading the presumption by quietly shipping goods from Xinjiang to the United States via other parts of China or third countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand. The high tariffs that Trump has threatened to impose on these countries do not preclude their ongoing use to evade the ban on imports of the product of Uyghur forced labor. Greater customs scrutiny is needed.
To make matters worse, Beijing has imposed hefty fines on the people conducting the private due diligence that the U.S. government recommends importers undertake to ensure that a supply chain is free of forced labor. Some local employees of major firms conducting due diligence have been detained, although one group was released in March.
Unless Beijing opens up and allows free investigation of supply chains throughout the country to ensure they are not tainted by Uyghur forced labor, Trump should threaten to apply the presumption against imports to all goods from China. In addition, Trump should impose sanctions on Chinese subsidiaries in third countries that facilitate evasion of the presumption and add more companies to the “Entity List” from which imports are presumptively banned.
A focus on forced labor has potentially wider appeal than the use of tariffs. Trump’s tariffs have prompted global anger and retaliatory measures. But no government can afford to show indifference to forced labor. International law has banned forced labor since 1930.
In short, a trade policy that includes attention to China’s use of Uyghur forced labor could be a win-win. Regardless of what one thinks about Trump’s war against global trade, there is no question that China’s use of Uyghur forced labor is an unfair trade practice that should be stopped. It would undercut a major unfair competitive advantage for Chinese businesses, helping to whittle down the trade deficit, while addressing a serious human rights violation. Rubio gets it. Trump should, too.

People’s Flag Wars: Round 1, Bracket 11
See the symbolism below.
Coptic Egypt is a flag by @arthurdrakoni.
Symbolism: “This is the flag of Coptic Egypt.  It comes from a world where Islam was never founded.  One of the many consequences of this was that the Byzantine Empire continued to prosper for a number of years.  Eventually, however, tensions began to grow within the empire.  Egypt began to feel that Constantinople was giving them the short end of the stick a bit too often.  Egypt's main grievances were increased taxes and increased tensions between the Coptic and Orthodox churches. After a brief war, Egypt was granted its independence.  Despite this, Egypt retains good relations with Byzantium.  It also maintains good relations with fellow Oriental Orthodox nations Ethiopia and Armenia.  Egypt has traditionally been a hub of trade, and following its independence work began on a canal in the Sinai Peninsula.  Egypt established traditions ports in India and China.  It also established colonies in Australia, which is known as New Egypt, as well as a few minor colonies in South America.
The wealth from its trade and colonies has made Egypt a very rich nation.  People and goods from throughout the world can be found across Egypt's cities.  Currently there is something of an architectural fad based around reinterpretations of Ancient Egyptian architecture.  Egypt also has a reputation for having some of the best universities and centers of learning in the world.  It is a nation which honors its past while keeping an eye towards the future.
The flag contains a Coptic Cross to represent Egypt's Coptic faith.  The background represents the sands of Egypt, while the blue bands stands for the waters of the Nile River.  The writing is in the Coptic Script and reads "Jesus Christ, Son of God".”
Forest City Flag is a flag by @forestcityflag.
Symbolism: “The Forest City is a new flag for Cleveland, highlighting both our history and environment. The blue top half represents Lake Erie, our very own inland sea. The green bottom half represents the Forest City nickname and the Emerald Necklace of our Metroparks. The wavy chevron in the center represents the Cuyahoga River winding its way through downtown. The pattern is inspired by a design from Moses Cleaveland's coat of arms (he's the guy who invented Cleveland). At the same time, the upward facing arrow is reminiscent of the city's motto "Progress and Prosperity," pointing up towards the future.”
New Jersey Autonomous Zone is a flag by @lil-tachyon.
Symbolism: “The design is based on the original New Jersey flag but re-imagined in the context of some kind of anarcho-communist future. The buff field of the NJ flag is replaced by the bisected black/red used by anarcho-communists and syndicalists. The coat of arms has the godesses Liberty and Ceres replaced by workers wielding a sickle and hammer, the horse head replaced by the head of the Jersey Devil, a yellow Star backed by a slice of pork roll replacing the helmet, and tomatoes and cranberries flanking the star. The motto is changed from "Liberty and Prosperity" to "Trenton Makes, The World Takes," the words infamously featured on the Lower Trenton Bridge.”

'Whats green and goes slam, slam, slam, slam? A four door pickle!'
A few nights ago I was looking through a trunk of my mothers things from when she was a girl in the eighties. Amidst these things were a few 'riddle books' she had made, with fun riddles/jokes accompanied by matching crayon drawings. Most of them were normal, most of them I had already heard countless times. Besides the one on the very first page.
'Whats green and goes slam slam slam slam?' 'A 4 door pilkle!'
I didn't get it. My initial assumption was that she had been trying to come up with a riddle on her own, completely original. This assumption was not supported by the following pages, all of which were familiar and classic. I kept thinking about it- a four door pickle? That isn't funny! Jokes flying over my head is a common occurrence, so I went to look online to see if I could find an explanation.
The first thing that popped up was a reddit post in r/jokes from nine years ago, which reads:
'What is green and goes slam, slam, slam, slam?
A four door pickle!'
This confirms the joke was not made up by my nine year old mother. The only response to the post reads as such:
'House of Pain?'
I don't know what this means.
Most of the search results are similar- people sharing the joke online, and it being met with minimal reaction. Here, I found a meme uploaded five years ago to imgflip. It has three upvotes. This is the most recent
Tumblr media
I was - am- thinking that 'a four door pickle' is intended to be a play on words. Say it really fast, and it sounds like something! Afordorpickle. I don't get it. My mind also wandered to sports- Pickleball!!!!!
Tumblr media
I've played pickleball before, and I don't remember any doors. I also don't think it existed in the eighties. And like, I get it. Doors slam, so four doors would slam, slam, slam, slam, pickles are famously green. But I don't get it.
'Whats green and goes slam?
A one door pickle!'
I tried focusing on other parts of the joke- maybe the punchline was in the first line. Looking up 'slam slam slam slam' led me to something called tennis, which is kind of like pickleball. It has something called a 'Grand Slam.'
Pickleball:
Im on the pickleball wikipedia page, learning more about pickleball than I've ever wished too. It was created in 1965, which is absolutely tragic. Fifty-eight long, long years we've shared the earth with the wretched sport. This, devastatingly, puts pickleball back on the table for something this joke could be referencing- but first, to save myself any more grief, I'm gonna search for anything more online.
VARIANTS!
'Whats yellow and goes slam, slam, slam, slam?
A four door banana'
'Whats purple and goes slam slam slam slam?
A four door grape'
'What is red and goes “slam! Slam! Slam! Slam!”?
A four door tomato'
So, its an anti-joke, right? Its a joke that's funny because its stupid. But there's still something itching deep inside of me, telling me to dig deeper. This joke dates to at least 40 years past- where did it start? Was the original the pickle variant, or something else? Is there context missing? I have to know.
I've read so many riddle books.
'What do you call a boy whos sick and tired and has gone cross eyes from all this damn wordplay?
Birdie!'
My head is going slam, slam, slam, slam into a wall. A four door fruit. A four door vegetable. Slam, slam, slam, slam. Does anyone actually think these jokes are funny? Did anyone sharing these online actually understand the punchline? In one of the riddle books I read today, there was a blurb at the end that stuck with me.
'In a sense, riddles are as fragile and yet as durable as fine bone china. The best survive being handed on from generation to generation, while new ones share elements with the past.'
Riddle Red Riddle Book by Ann Bishop, 1969
I think this riddle is on its way out- and good riddance to it, too. But, still. When my mom was nine years old, this joke stuck with her enough she wrote it down and drew a picture to match, alongside classics like 'Why did the cow go to the drive-in?' (To see the moo-vies!)
There's something meta to say about how the joke is sticking with me, too, but a joke isn't meant to stick with you as a haunting memory of what used to be considered funny. I'll ask my mom next time I see her if she remembers what she meant when she wrote it, (I realize now I've been making it sound like she's dead- she is not.) though I'm pretty sure she wont remember.
I've heard a lot of talk about the ghost of languages, of the death of information, what the passage of time eats and the small remnants its left behind, and I can't help but feel like, in a melodramatic sense, I'm watching this riddle being eaten alive. The first time I read it, I laughed- I was staring at a relic from a girl I've never met, and who I've known all my life, and who couldn't spell pickle right. It was absurd, and I didn't get it, and it was two in the morning and the girl who wrote it was my mother, sleeping two sets of stairs above me, and that's what made it funny. That's what I mean by it being haunting- the joke is there, its fulfilling its purpose, its making me laugh. But the context is gone. The context is gone, and I've filled it in with something else and it still works, but not the way its meant too. Its a dying riddle. And its so, so stupid.

How would you end XXX/Would you change the ending of XXX?
I feel Hetalia needs some kind of really nice, wholesome ending with the nations all doing something fun and silly with each other. They have many differences, but they can relate to and understand each other in ways no human can, which allows them to come together and feel a sense of belonging. They can't fix the world; it'll never be perfect, but there is hope for the future.
They could play games, sing songs, and reminisce on some Hetalia scenes from the past, like:
America: Remember when we sat around a campfire on that island? England kept chanting like he was trying to summon the devil!
England: That reminds me of when you prank called me and pretended to BE the devil!
Belarus: Sometimes I like to prank call Poland and just breathe into the phone.
Poland: That was you?!
China: On the topic of pranks, how about that crazy April Fools' Day where we all got blackmailed?
France: Hey, remember when I tried to trick you by pretending a marriage registration form was a calendar?
England: I don't know how you ever thought I would believe that!
Spain: Oh, when I tried proposing to Romano he gave me all these conditions!
Romano: There weren't that many!
England: Oh, I recall when America got upset because I didn't give him chocolates for Valentine's Day.
Italy: Haha! You proposed to him? Germany gave me a ring once on Valentine's Day! It turned out to be this whole big misunderstanding!
America: You're always giving me ice cream and chocolate bars and things! I just figured you would give me some then, too!
England: Well, I brought them later and you tried to play it off like it never happened!
America: Haha, did I do that?
Prussia: Oh, speaking of England giving out food, remember when I posted on my blog about how he made me food and everyone thought I died?? Not cool, guys! As if I would be defeated by that!
Germany: We were just concerned.
Prussia: Some of you got REALLY concerned! That was interesting!
Austria: Well, there's no need to be foolish!
Hungary: Yes, you may be a handful, but you have your good points! For one, there was that time you gave me a piece of fabric from your clothes to help me cover up...
Italy: He helped clean my house!
Romano: That idiot cheered me up once when I couldn't get a role in a movie.
America: I like to make movies! You can get a role in mine if you want! Maybe we can make it about...the Pictonian invasion!!
Prussia: Oh! What about a movie inspired by that fantasy game we all played together?
Estonia: Maybe it could be based on this dream I had where you all became women! It was really weird!
Japan: What–?
Russia: I think it would be nice to make a movie about some of the pleasant memories we've been discussing.
Spain: We should include the time I had turtles crawling all over the place!
Canada: Sometimes Cuba and I have ice cream together. That's a nice memory.
Japan: Learning English with England-san and German with Prussia-san.
England: There was that one time Germany and I stopped fighting on Christmas to play football...
Japan: Rooming with America.
Lithuania: Oh, yes, I liked staying with him, too.
Romano: I guess it was all right.
Belarus: ...I didn't like it much. But some parts were okay.
Russia: Don't worry, we can definitely skip all that!
America: How about that time Russia sent cardboard cutouts to everyone? That was hilarious!
Japan: Hmm...when we learned about America's Furbies?
Italy: When I wrote a song for Germany! That's a good memory!
Germany: ...When I first found you hiding in that tomato box.
It ends with them singing a new song, and then finally, Marukaite Chikyuu. Italy then says, "The series may be over, but history never ends!"

Happy sleepover Saturday!! How’s ur day been? My roommate and I have been enjoying Chinese lays from the Asian grocery, which include such flavors as cucumber and Mexican tomato (???), highly recommend trying at least for the novelty of you can find them. Are there any funky flavors that you love that other ppl might be skeptical abt? Also I hope you’re having a lovely one 💕
omg i love checking out chip flavors from other countries when i travel...the notable lays flavors i've had from past few years include olive oil from spain, "mexican" from israel (just kinda vaguely chili flavored?) and Texas Grilled BBQ from china. i ought to find an asian grocery near me and do an Interesting Chip Flavor Taste Test at some point cause that sounds like so much fun
anyway the one "weird" flavor combo that i think is genuinely good but it confused/disturbs people when i tell them about it is balsamic vinegar on ice cream. specifically, good high quality vanilla ice cream and the best aged balsamic vinegar you can reasonably afford, not to be an annoying pretentious foodie but these are two ingredients where quality Really matters imo. a really good aged balsamic is almost more sweet than it is sour, and it's got a wonderful complex depth of flavor and a thick syrupy consistency, so it makes for a shockingly good ice cream topping. also goes well with fruits like peaches and strawberries. i highly recommend giving it a try if you're curious!
