That one meme where we drew this comic panel as our comfort characters... If you think about it this could be literally canon

Huckleberry deserves to grow older and I think he deserves to grow into himself and be rather handsome in that unconventional and rugged way and I think he deserves to have friends and relationships outside of Tom (the creators of Tom Sawyer No Bouken creating the lovely Lisette and having her take to someone like Huckleberry were SO right of them to do) and he deserves to have a life and make something of himself and he deserves Tom's genuine recognition and maybe Tom should experience feeling a bit put out by Huck no longer just needing or having him.
My point is Huck deserves a lot of good things and while I'm not sure how exactly Mark Twain wanted it for him I know what I want for him and that's that.

I read this while I was at work so any solid points of thought I had about it are scattered now but this reminds me how much I actually really liked the creation of the character Lisette in that 1980s anime of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Tom Sawyer No Bouken) because she wasn't just some character in which centered around meeting and knowing Tom, thus by association, so did Huck.
No, she was a character in which her association primarily dealt with Huckleberry, her storyline and even her own backstory revolved around and related to that of Huck, not Tom.
There's an independence there, away from Tom, which I believe was mighty important for Huck as a character, least outside of his own book. Lisette was interested in Huckleberry because he's Huckleberry, not because of his association with Tom Sawyer.
Huck deserves that. He deserves characters, outside of Tom and his circle, who willingly interacts with him, befriends him, even shows romantic interest. He deserves his own defining moments, away from Tom, even if Tom himself can't understand it or takes great offense to it (found it awful funny the way Tom reacted to being woken up by Huck in that anime, to be told that he's in love, with Lisette, and Tom not even remotely interested or amused by it, just downright tired and finding Huck to being ridiculous about it)
Huckleberry deserves to find himself, to grow from a young boy to a man, on his own. Actually, I think that's quite fitting for his overall character type. It makes sense, Huckleberry, the roundabout, the wanderer, the orphan, to go off on his own whenever he'd like for how long he'd like, because he can and because he wouldn't be afraid too.
It could be debatable whether Tom could understand that. Tom's more comfortable in the stability and familiarity of his civilized upbringing, it's different to go out into the world on impulse by himself (though I'm sure he'd try, especially considering he'd tried running off and running away on boyish impulse) and then running off with someone you'd consider your best friend (or complicated-crush friend) because at least then you wouldn't be facing the world and all it's adventures and terrible evils alone. There's something romantic about it too.
Huckleberry knows what alone feels like. He's not afraid of it, not anymore. He can do it alone, he wants too, or he would, could, and can go out alone.
It'd make sense why Tom would take offense, one way or another, especially if you take into consideration the envy that could arise from the fact Huck can just, up and go, leave someplace and stay away for aa long as he wanted. Tom can't really do that, or at least, maybe he could, if Huck gave him that out. Tom has obligations, responsibilities, he's got schooling probably too. He's got a life in St. Petersburg, no matter how small town, but Huckleberry... Doesn't. Not really. He's still an outsider.
Only person who would seriously miss him, is Tom.
So to be told by Huck that he's wanting to leave, go out into the world to explore and grow into his own man... But alone, sure, that could be crushing from many different reasons for Tom.
But it only makes sense, because as much as Tom might think, subconsciously or not, that Huckleberry needs him, that he's all Huck's got, which could inevitably lead to a possessive attribute to it all—Huckleberry can get on without Tom, he doesn't belong to St. Petersburg, and so he isn't exactly someone Tom can hold down and keep within arms reach whenever he wants him.
But what's great about separation and learning to let go, to experience growing pains without each other—maybe it's months, maybe it's a year, maybe two—Huckleberry comes back, or chooses to come back.
It's the conscious choice from a freeman like Huck, even after experiencing life outside of St. Petersburg, outside of Tom, to come back—come back to Tom.
