Max interview
Something completely different: You were born in Belgium and currently live in Monaco, but do you actually feel like a Limburger?
"Absolute! I cannot identify with any other region than Limburg. I am a Limburger and not a Brabander or Amsterdammer.”
Are you also proud of the successes of other Limburgers, such as Tom Dumoulin in the past or - on a completely different level - someone like André Rieu, who performed the Wilhelmus with his complete orchestra at Formula 1 in Zandvoort this season?
Droogjes: “If a Dutch person performs well, I automatically find that better than someone with a different nationality.”
The season is now over. So it's high time for a holiday. Do you ever go on winter sports or are you very aware of the risks? Everyone knows the story of Michael Schumacher.
“Yes, dramatic of course and sad. But on the other hand, you can also slip in the shower and break your neck. There is a risk in everything. But to answer your question, I haven't skied in five years because of the risk of breaking or twisting something with all the consequences that entails. And of course also in the knowledge that there are still years to come in which I have a great chance of becoming champion again and winning races. If you think about that, you automatically take fewer risks.”
Football players often have it in their contract that they are not allowed to ski...
"Me, too. No dangerous sports.”

One story among many stands out as evidence of what that will to win, combined with his mastery of strategy and detail, can accomplish. Stage 19 of Giro d'Italia, Friday 25th May 2018. Cycling history was at stake. Team Sky had won the Tour de France several times. The previous September they had also won the Vuelta a España. If they could now win the Giro, then they'd hold all three Grand Tour titles at the same time, a rare accomplishment. For someone as competitive as Brailsford - and Chris Froome, Team Sky's leading cyclist, matches Brailsford in that characteristic - it seemed like a golden opportunity to make history. Froome would become a cycling legend, one of the true greats alongside Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Induráin. The only problem for Brailsford and Froome was that, with just three days of the three-week race left, they were way off the pace. The Giro so far had not gone well for them. In spite of Team Sky's fabled attention to detail, lots had gone wrong - Froome had even had saddle sores. Worse, he'd crashed at the start of the race. 'It wasn't just any old crash, Brailsford said, ‘it was a big crash, so that knocked him for six really.’ And eighteen stages later, he was in fourth place, more than three minutes behind Simon Yates, the talented young British rider in the leader's maglia rosa (pink jersey). In second place, not far behind Yates, was Tom Dumoulin, the consistently excellent flying Dutchman. To make up three minutes on these two riders in the remainder of the race seemed a tall order. So, I asked, had Brailsford thought at any point, even just in his own head, this is gone now? Never, he replied, because Froome is such an extraordinary competitor. To prove it, Froome decided he wanted to win a stage partway through the Giro, and chose the one that included the Zoncolan climb, an unforgiving ascent, exactly the kind Froome likes. The experts, Brailsford included, looked at his power and other numbers for the first part of the race and thought, no chance. But win it he did. 'We were thinking "How the hell did he do that?"’ What was that, I asked, sheer willpower? 'Yes', came the reply. 'Bloody-mindedness.’

Random ask: pick one babe from every nhl team -🩵
Okay, not going to lie. I've wanted to do something like this for a while. This will be based on each team's 2022-2023 roster. (Maybe we do this every year after the trade deadline?)
Anaheim Ducks - Anthony Stolarz Arizona Coyotes - Shea Weber (LOL) Boston Bruins - Jeremy Swayman Buffalo Sabres - Alex Tuch Calgary Flames - Blake Coleman Carolina Hurricanes - Andrei Svechnikov Chicago Blackhawks - Taylor Raddysh Colorado Avalance - Gabe Landeskog ( I know he was on IR but he's the only one from that team I can tolerate rn ) Columbus Blue Jackets - Elvis Merzlikins Dallas Stars - Jake Oettinger Detroit Red Wings - Andrew Copp Edmonton Oilers - Leon Draisaitl Florida Panthers - Matthew Tkachuk LA Kings - Alex Iaffalo Minnesota Wild - Brandon Duhaime Montreal Canadiens - Josh Anderson Nashville Predators - Roman Josi New Jersey Devils - Brendan Smith New York Islanders - Matt Martin New York Rangers - Chris Kreider Ottawa Senators - Alex DeBrincat Philadelphia Flyers - Brendan Lemieux Pittsburgh Penguins - Brian Dumoulin San Jose Sharks - Evgeny Svechnikov Seattle Kraken - Vince Dunn St. Louis Blues - Jakub Vrana Tampa Bay Lightning - Ross Colton Toronto Maple Leafs - Ryan O'Reilly Vancouver Canuks - Anthony Beavillier Vegas Golden Knights - Reilly Smith ( this one took me a while, really had to stare at their roster ) Washington Capitals - Tom Wilson Winnipeg Jets - Adam Lowry

in regard to your GT anon answer (and anon if you see this my dms/askbox are also open 🥰) there's not been a GT winner who's not been at least very good in the mountains; miguel indurain -- and to a lesser extent tom dumoulin for a recent example -- are both successful GC riders who despite not being the absolute best of climbers, were outstanding time triallists and engines on the flatter stages and were able to very effectively limit their losses to purer climbers in the big mountain stages
Thanks for the answer :3c. Very interesting to know

(in regards to your fill for stage 7) Since there are many thoughts on godly parents, any you'd like to share?
yes yes yes
first things first tadej, son of nike - like goddess of victory? come on now. i feel like he spends a little bit in the hermes cabin before he gets claimed, and everyone has different ideas about who his godly parent is because he's so gosh-darned good at everything. nike claims him the first time he goes on a mad solo run to win capture the flag.
jonas is a son of one of the wind gods. boreas, the north wind, is the obvious choice - north, denmark, cold, etc - but i've also toyed with the idea of zephyros, the god of the west wind (gentler, associated with spring and summer). jonas also has a special bike from his dad (either) that shrinks down into a wristwatch or something. aero nerd remco is very jealous.
wout, son of athena - goddess of wisdom and strategy, of course. he's the head counselor at the athena cabin and in a perpetual battle of one-upmanship with that annoying head counselor for ares (three guesses and the first two don't count). he's been around at camp for a long time and is very protective of jonas.
jasper is a satyr.
others who did not appear in the little 100 word thing i posted:
primoz, son of tyche - goddess of luck, chance, and destiny (i'm so sorry)
sepp, son of hermes obviously - god of couriers and travelers
remco, son of zeus - the pressure and expectation of being a child of the big 3 as a metaphor for belgian cycling is something that can be so personal, actually
#what if i wrote something#there's so much to play with here and the potential narrative arcs to correspond to actual irl narratives is so fascinating#tom dumoulin is a very nice looking tree bc he sacrificed himself so primoz and jonas could make it to camp safely. rip tom.#when they get the golden fleece he comes back hotter than ever and primoz just. slowly loses his mind
