i don’t know why i’m consistently surprised by how many of the users on this website don’t know how to be a person. like “haha it’s so cute and fun we’re all so neuroSPICY” girl you still have to be a person. you still have to learn how to Be A Person you have to learn how to be normal around other people for the love of god is this thing on you still have to commit to basic social contracts and that’s a good thing

"Tolerance" is the modern word for "Hospitality". Historically, and in mythology especially, it's really damned clear that you only GET hospitality if you GIVE hospitality. Hospitality has rules, and if you break them, you lose the protections it provides.
That's exactly what offering hate and expecting tolerance is - a rejection of hospitality resulting in a revocation of hospitality.
so much for getting the heck off my page
funny thing about goofball devils saying 'so much for the tolerant left' is idea that i was ever tolerant of them in first place. bud i am NOT tolerant of fascist racist bigots and never have been. if you are into that stuff then dont buy my books and get the heck off my page

"In order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be intolerant of intolerance." This is the so-called tolerance paradox of the philosopher Karl Popper. In other words, when a tolerant society tolerates intolerant worldviews, that is not just the end of tolerance. Ultimately it's the end of this society...

Anti-theists are somehow almost more hateful in general than Evangelicals, which shouldn’t be possible, but apparently is.
Religion has existed since humans first started trying to understand the world around us and religion will continue to exist for as long as there are humans. Religion is one of many ways that humans interact with and process our world and that's never going to change.

How far does the paradox of tolerance go?
Thinking back to a post I read about framing of the paradox of tolerance as a social contract, those not willing to follow it aren't owed it or something. I wondered....
If a white man is racist, can you be racist back to him? What about sexist toward him? or would that require he also be sexist?
The social contract framing seemed super sus to me and i couldn't figure out why.
And then it hit me.
If a white trans man is racist, can you be transphobic towards them? can you ignore their preferred pronouns?
No. The answer is no. If you needed me to tell you this, this is not the social media site for you.
I don't think its suppose to work like this. I think it makes more sense to focus on it as not tolerating their intolerance, but still not being shitty to them about their other characteristics and i worry this social contract framing instead positions it as a binary switch that flips which justifies hate because of hate.

Found on Masto, permission granted by creator [email protected], inspired by Zunger’s concept that tolerance is a peace treaty that cannot apply to those who refuse to abide by the treaty.

Oh boy just found out that politics are coming directly to my conservative college campus this fall.
Yay.
#well thank god I’m cooping so I won’t be there I guess.#I still might drive in to protest because presumably there’ll be one#annother fun session of having people yell transphobic shit while we chant stuff like ‘hate has no place here’#if I’m lucky the campus barstool account will post a picture of me at the protest again (this is not a good thing)#also sucks because my parents are just kinda like ‘well that’s how it is. people are allowed to have different political beliefs’#like yeah they can have different political beliefs but I would like to medically transition and these guys want me to not#also I love working with kids and being a camp counselor and stuff#and some of these people would want me arested as a p/e/dofile because I’m trans and indoctrinating their children#so yeah sure they can have different beliefs but they don’t seem to understand that there are certain groups that want trans people gone#honestly my parents are both upper middle class white people. they come from a long line of college educated people in primarily white areas#both of them tend to preach tolerance to the point where I have to have the paradox of tolerance picture on my phone to remind myself that#tolerance is a social contract not a moral principle#(a good example of this is when I found out that a girl on my xc team had to move schools because she was bullied out of my hs#becuase she was homophobic. and he was like ‘well bullying is never the answer’#ok but like you understand that she was probably harassing gay people at my school right)#in conclusion: pro tip for queer students choosing their college: yes they may give you lots of money. but is it worth your mental health

Image is of white text on a black background, no attribution or time/date info. Capitalization/punctuation transcribed as-is. Image text reads:
I was at a shitty crustpunk bar once getting an after-work beer. One of those shitholes where the bartenders clearly hate you. So the bartender and I were ignoring one another when someone sits next to me and he immediately says, “no. get out.”
And the dude next to me says “hey i'm not doing anything, i'm a paying customer.” and the bartender reaches under the counter for a bat or something and says, “out. now.” and the dude leaves, kind of yelling. And he was dressed in a punk uniform, I noticed
Anyway, I asked what that was about and the bartender was like, “you didn't see his vest but it was all nazi shit. Iron crosses and stuff. You get to recognize them.”
And i was like, ohok and he continues.
“you have to nip it in the bud immediately. These guys come in and it's always a nice, polite one. And you serve then because you don't want to cause a scene. And then they become a regular and after awhile they bring a friend. And that dude is cool too.
And then THEY bring friends and the friends bring friends and they stop being cool and then you realize, oh shit, this is a Nazi bar now. And it's too late because they're entrenched and if you try to kick them out, they cause a PROBLEM. So you have to shut them down.”
And i was like “oh damn.” and he said “yeah, you have to ignore their reasonable arguments because their end goal is to be terrible, awful people.”
And then he went back to ignoring me. But I haven't forgotten that at all.

Why does the right wing complain more than the left?
This post is a response to a question posed in its complete format: “Why does the right wing complain about the left wing far more on the internet than the left complains about the right on internet podcasts, etc.?” I haven’t performed any surveys, nor am I aware of any statistics on the matter. I have, however, noticed a distinct difference between the nature and characteristics of the…

Again, her words can be used for different abusive situations.
Don't clean up after the people who would tear everything up without a second thought.
Don't prop them up in your businesses. Don't prop them up to your family... they're not worth the utter damages they wreak on others in the group.
and yeah, being kind is kind, until it isn't. (A hard one to learn, cuz many of us do want to see the good in folks.) Evidence piles up though, and ignoring evidence helps nobody.

Quick reminder that the Paradox of Tolerance exists only when you consider tolerance to be a moral precept. But tolerance is a social contract, which only applies to those who abide by that contract -- you're under no obligation to tolerate intolerance.
